My Mr. and I had dinner at the Metropole (BTW, I highly recommend their food and service) and wanted to go to the rooftop. Located in the 21C Museum Hotel on the 11th floor. You will definitely enjoy your time at the cocktail Terrace! Comfortable outdoor patio seating, high top tables, gorgeous view of downtown Cincy, and a nice selection of drinks and appetizers. My Mr ordered The Admiral- Old Forrester, cherry liquor, and orange. I ordered the Beauty School Dropout- Bacardi Silver, mango, strawberry, and ginger (comes in cool looking glass flask bottle). The three stars are more so for the view and ambience. What a pleasant surprise to find a chill rooftop in a city that didnt have a line and easily we were able to find seating for a big group. It was a Monday afternoon, but on a gorgeous day in NYC, even on Monday afternoons its difficult to find seating at any outside venue! Makes you think about moving to a city that offers less of a hassle compared to my current city... Anyway, I digress. The rooftop bar access is actually in this alley way past the entrance of the hotel and the restaurant. You'll find a someone standing outside a door and they will direct you to the elevator for the rooftop bar. View is gorgeous! Especially on a warm day. They have tables with stools towards the back of the rooftop and comfy couches to lounge on throughout. LOVE that this chain has the penguin theme and the plastic penguin kept us company while we chilled on that rooftop. Cocktails were nothing to write home about. Except "The Kiki" which was a popsicle in prosecco. It was a fun drink, but I don't think the actual taste was anything life altering. Also, don't expect any substantial food here, ie. dont come here hungry. The service was alright- they were friendly but brought out more cocktails than we ordered. If you are hanging out or staying in downtown Cincinnati, I definitely recommend coming up here to relax and get a different vantage point of Cincinnati. However almost each time we are let down after our first few sips. At $10-12, you're paying for the view and nothing more. The cocktails are very watered down. I expect a little more. The Cocktail Terrace at 21C Hotel is a new rooftop bar that just opened on to the public about two weeks ago. The atmosphere is stunning! Sleek white couches, and the light up railing made of glass is just awesome. There is a great view of Mt. Adams on the far side. They also have a very unique drink selection: poptails, craft beer, craft cocktails. The first time I came here I got a Lavender Poptail which I assumed was a popsicle in a cocktail. This is actually a huge flavored popsicle in a shot of alcohol. The popsicle was overly sticky and just not good. I wouldn't recommend that one. Maybe the others are good. Cool idea though! The other times we've went I ordered a gin and tonic and it was significantly cheaper than the gin and tonic cocktail that was on the menu. Here is my advice when coming here: - Get a beer, or a mixed drink to save money unless you want to splurge on something because the prices are around $9-$12. - Avoid happy hour after work this place is swamped. - Come here when you can relax and spend some time enjoying the atmosphere. I like to come here after dinner when it's night and the railing is all lit up. It's really beautiful. Would easily get five stars if it wasn't for that uber sticky poptail in the shot for $12. The Drifters once sang of escaping the hustling crowd and all that rat-race noise in the street... Up on the roof. I'm fairly certain that was part of what the minds behind Cocktail Terrace, atop the 21c Museum & Hotel in downtown Cincinnati, were thinking when they brought it to life. It's a great, relaxing escape from the everyday for sure. To get to this rooftop escape, you'll walk around the right side of the 21c building, down a brick-laid alleyway, to an open side door leading to an elevator which you'll take to the 11th floor (insert your own "This one goes to 11" joke here). Once you depart the elevator, you'll find a wonderful view of downtown along with plush outdoor seating. It's FAR from the crowded bar scenes so abundant down below. Their drink menu feature plenty of options, from beer to wine to lots of tasty mixed drinks, slushies, and pop-tails. My lady and I tried the Admiral (Old Forrester bourbon, cherry liqueur, and orange) and she had the Beauty School Dropout (Bacardi silver, mango, strawberry, and ginger served in a glass flask bottle). Both drinks were VERY tasty! They were a tad pricey but well worth it with the overall experience. The servers were all very friendly and knowledgeable too. Wow! I felt like I was in another town when I sat on the rooftop at the 21c. It definitely had the New York or Chicago kinda vibe going on which I loved because that is one thing Cincinnati definitely needs more nightlife and needless to say the people at 21c definitely delivered! Cozy couches all around, sweeping views and a cute little plastic penguin add into the mix. The drinks are reasonably priced and they also have small bites if you happen to want something to eat while you drink so you can enjoy those sweeping views!! The fact that the Cocktail Terrace exists downtown is HUGE progress for Cincinnati. After growing up in this area, then spending my adult life in New York City, and now having moved back to Cincinnati, I was blown away by this establishment. I have always thought that a Cocktail Terrace-type establishment was possible in downtown Cincinnati and now to see it come into reality is so exciting. For some background for the out-of-towners, back in the 1890s-1950s, I would imagine that swanky joints along the likes of the Cocktail Terrace would have been commonplace downtown in its heyday but the 1960s/white flight/suburban sprawl were not good to Cincinnati and its downtown pretty much hasn't seen this level of sophisticated leisure since. I honestly felt like I had been transported to a SoHo or TriBeCa lounge as I sipped on my cocktail gazing over the Cincinnati skyline and into Kentucky. The layout and the execution of this concept is very impressive--truly cosmopolitan. With establishments like this popping up, it is clear that Cincinnati's urban renaissance is here to stay. Having experienced my fair share of "sleek, contemporary lounges" that put so much emphasis on ambiance and concept that they neglect to actually follow through with quality service and products, I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about this place opening, expecting more or less the same. But I was pleasantly surprised to experience refreshingly attentive service and stellar cocktails. I had the "Oxygin" (essentially a basil lemonade gin & tonic) and it was excellent--light yet flavorful but not too sweet. Our server checked on us every 10 or 15 minutes but not in an obnoxious way--in a very courteous and professional way. I honestly don't have a single complaint about the Cocktail Terrace. This is definitely where I will be bringing all of my out-of-town guests for a taste of Cincinnati opulence. This place is too stylish for its own good. You enter as though it's a speakeasy ... down an alley, through a door that is hardly marked, up an elevator that has only a martini-glass icon to identify your destination. Once you arrive, it is a lovely rooftop space (though they could work on the shade distribution). I can't speak to the nibbles, but we did have their "signature" pop-tails, and they were ... not at all good. First, they were very expensive ($12 to $13 for one ounce of liquor and a Dole-Fruit-Bar-sized frozen treat). Secondly, they were served in 'bourbon' or 'tequila' (no brand names, so you know it is likely the cheap stuff). Thirdly, for some reason they were out of the first two we tried to order, and it was a Tuesday night. There was a regular cocktail list as well, and wine, but again, the prices were more suited to downtown Chicago, not Cincinnati. I'm writing this based on my experience on the rooftop terrace bar only (the entrance is in the alley on the side of the building). We met up with some friends there at 11pm on a Saturday. The bouncer was turning some guys away as I walked up to the door, but I mentioned I was meeting someone already inside and they let us in. Once you step out onto the roof on the 11th floor, the atmosphere is pretty cool and modern. This place tries to be pretty exclusive if you like that kind of thing. However I felt like service was terribly lacking, as multiple servers told us 'just a moment' as they rushed by distractedly. Then once we finally ordered drinks, it took forever for them to arrive, and we had to ask 4 times to get our check. It wasn't even very crowded so I have no idea why things were so slow and disorganized. The bouncer reappeared upstairs after we got in and made a couple rude comments to my guy friend that were completely unwarranted. For a place this exclusive, you'd think the service would be awesome but that wasn't the case. I might come back again in the summer for the rooftop view and cool ambiance, but only if I'm trying to stay sober. read more

I like the idea of a rooftop bar downtown, but the execution here is lacking in just about every way. Space is limited, so we were put on the waiting list around 9:00 on a Friday night and texted around 9:15 to be let in. When we arrived, there was a party of 8-10 who had just walked up and were arguing to be let in, one of whom was clearly underage eye candy and proceeded to make a scene about needing to go back home to get her ID. The doorman could have easily waved us up at any time, but preferred to entertain this farce instead. We eventually made it in. The space itself isn't bad; views are decent, but the comfort level of the furniture leaves something to be desired. Service also leaves something to be desired, as it took our waitress a while to notice us and bring us menus, and an even longer while to come back for our order and open a tab. The menu mentions a full bar at the bottom, but they didn't have the necessary liquor to make my wife's first THREE suggestions, none of which were out of the ordinary. We finally settled on a ginger concoction for her (not very good) and a Rhinegeist for me. The manager later found us and was very apologetic for the "confusion" at the entry, and offered to comp our round of drinks. We were pretty disillusioned with the experience by this point, so we settled up with the waitress (who confirmed that our two drinks had been taken care of) and left. To be fair, let me preface what I am about to say by proclaiming that this is, aesthetically, a really cool place; probably one of the coolest in the area. That being said, if you like places where people take themselves way too seriously, the 21c Rooftop Bar might be the place for you. To elaborate: I felt a little too much like a hillbilly to be spending $25 on two drinks and a tip. But I'd been dying to check this place out, and the atmosphere--at least of the outdoors persuasion and not the clientele--was almost worth the wallet-busting libations. If you love Cincinnati, trendily designed spaces, and taking in the views, 21c Rooftop Bar is definitely for you. (I only take myself semi-seriously, so I would say I fall somewhere in the latter.) Location: Perched atop the new and prestigious 21c boutique hotel, the Rooftop Bar enjoys close proximity to a multitude of restaurants, entertainment venues, and other bars. Additionally, there are a number of street parking spots as well as parking garages to cater to anyone who would be driving to this establishment*. The elevator that whisks its patrons to the Terrace Bar Above the City is found inside the entrance from the alleyway between 21c and Nicholson's Pub, which defines its exclusivity in both the figurative and literal senses. Atmosphere: The atmosphere is absolutely Rooftop Bar's most incredible characteristic. And I mean the aesthetic atmosphere. Panoramas of northern downtown, Mt. Adams and Walnut Hills, as well as even part of the Central Business District to the south can be enjoyed from the tenth-floor vistas. While Fountain Square cannot be viewed from our vantage point, we could hear the 4th of July fireworks from our location, which was pretty cool. We also enjoyed sunset, which, well, was as awesome as you could imagine. Drinks: While the two beverages I opted for were pretty delicious, I'm not sure that a Kiki (Prosecco with hibiscus) and a glass of Prosecco were worth the $21.30 bar tab. The price tag is much better suited for larger cities such as New York or Chicago. But it's still pretty cool to know that Little Ol' Cincinnati can compete with the big boys. While I didn't love the feel of the clientele, I will say that I didn't have a terrible time. I'd much prefer to come back during the day when the available drinks make more sense to consume. Ideally, I'd like to go to brunch, have a mimosa or 5, then head to the Rooftop Bar to proceed with my champagne consumption. This certainly is not a place to go if you're looking to tie one on or if you are looking to head out in a group, as seating can be pretty limited. If you're looking to get funky around town, take a few jager bombs elsewhere before heading here. This place is much more casual hoity toity in the drink department. A cocktail that I can typically get for $5 at any other bar, including Proof on Main in Louisville (sister bar), was $12 here. I ordered the same drink twice and it was made two different ways. Not good. Cocktails need to be consistent. The other thing I didn't like about this place is that it is too cool for its own good. All of the "beautiful people", or those that think they are, come in and act like they own the place. CALM DOWN PEOPLE. IT'S CINCINNATI. Be friendly, be courteous , and act like you aren't the only one in the world. This is the midwest after all! I"m somewhere between a 3 and a 4 star on the 21C rooftop bar...It's good, and I like it here, but it's not great. The place is usually packed, and sometimes will have a wait (especially on Saturday nights). It's also very popular for happy hour. Their cocktails are good and unique, but I don't think they're great for the price. They are very small, and usually not super strong. Also, they're very expensive...Typically the cocktails here are around $10 each. I also don't like that they don't have a bar that you can order from...You have to wait for a waitress to come by your area to order, which makes drink service slower. The waitresses are very friendly, but I would rather just get my own drink if possible. The view is nice, especially when the weather is good. You can't really see that many cool Cincinnati landmarks, but it is nice to look out over some of the other popular bars in downtown. The decor is modern, sleek, and lounge-y, but their furniture is kind of uncomfortable. My main issues with this bar are their prices and the clientele. I've been saying for years that Cincinnati is missing a rooftop bar, and now we finally have one. It's beautiful! I love the wooden deck and the views are fantastic. It's not a big space, so it's best to try to avoid rush hour. It's not particularly cheap drinks, but even the fancier cocktails are between 9-12, so it's a nice place to grab one to start your night. I think the craft beers are cheaper. The poptails are fun in theory but hard to figure out how to consume in real life. Do you dip the popsicle in the straight booze shot and lick it off? However, this place loses a star since the terrace doesn't have much of a Cincy skyline view, and that's what matters the most w/ a rooftop bar. This is a great spot for drinks on nice days since it's all outdoors. The atmosphere is quite nice, relaxed and comes with a great view from atop 21c. Their cocktail selection is fantastic and very unique. Definitely try one of the poptails if you can! Since this is part of Metropole/21c, everything for the cocktails is made IN HOUSE, which is pretty outstanding. This includes their tonic (seriously, it's hands down the best I've ever had), any mixers, everything. The staff is always very friendly and they have a small menu of appetizer type plates that they serve in addition to drinks. The only downside is it's a little strange to get to and the non-standard hours. You take a service elevator up to the rooftop through a door on the side of the building. Going there the first time felt awkward for me, but I've since move past that. As for the hours, definitely keep an eye on their social media to find out if they are open for the day as hours vary due to weather or private events. read more

Our visit to The Cocktail Terrace at 21C Hotel was towards the end of our night during a bachelorette party. While at that point the group we were with was pretty rowdy and having a great time. The Cocktail Terrace seemed to be a great place to stop and just have a calm moment. The view was awesome and it was super quite for being in the middle of downtown. The ambiance was definitely more intimate versus bachelorette party. For us it just seemed to kill the vibe, but since we were nearing the end of the night most people seemed to really enjoy it. The waitress staff were super friendly and quickly attended to our large group. I would definitely recommend going here for a happy hour or on a date, but not with a large group of girls that loud and ready to party. read more

This place feels like a touch of New York in a Midwestern town. They are serious about protecting the experience upstairs so you might have to put your name on the list to come back when it opens up. Despite waiting 30 minutes to go up, when we arrived there wasn't anywhere to stand or sit. The service this time was what really struck out. We only saw a server sporadically and a friend had to ask for water several times. Finally got around to checking this place out for happy hour after work. I was expecting a large crowd, but turned out to be pretty empty while I was there. I loved the atmosphere with the white couches and chic decor... The view wasn't too shabby either! I ordered the gin and house tonic by recommendation, then had a sip of a friend's sangria and I was done for. So delicious! My friend was also happy with the beer selection, which is mostly local brews and lower priced than their cocktails and wines. They also have a few snacks, and we ordered the Fried Hominy with Smoked Lime Salt because it came recommended by our waitress. It had the texture of a Frito chip, and was very tasty. Also thought it was really cool to hear the story behind their infamous penguin. Apparently it came from Italy when the owner opened his first location in Louisville. Now, each location has their own color of penguin (Cincinnati's is yellow) and employees in each location can distinguish from each other by the color of their penguin pin (which all employees wear). A rooftop downtown bar/lounge is something Cincinnati has been missing. It is relatively small so the first time I went there there was actually a huge line at the entrance so we didn't go. However, I came back recently and thought there it was ok. There was no wait so we went right up on the elevator to the 11th floor. There are 4 couch areas that have a retractable covered roof as well as some bar stools and tables at the far end. The couches are communal so you can some and ask people to make some room for you. The menu is small, they have some innovative drink options - poptails (pop-sickle in liquor that melts to make a drink). My fiancee had one, bourbon with a strawberry pop-sickle and was underwhelmed. I had 2 craft cocktails, one with Rosemary was quite good the other "Oxygin" was nothing to write home about. They have a nice craft beer selection (bottles/cans only I believe) and some small bites. It is a bit pricey - mixed drinks $10-12, with the beers being more reasonable ($5-7). There is nothing better than sipping a delicious cocktail with the stunning view of downtown. There's really nothing quite like it. I was really blown away by the entire experience. The drinks are really fun and tasty. We had a Poptail and I have to admit that it was delicious and fun. I recommend that you allow it it melt a little and slowly sip it rather than attempt to eat it like a traditional popsicle because you'll end up a sticky mess. The pretzel was also quite delicious. I suggest you try and come rather early because if you wait until peak bar hours, it's entirely too cramped and overwhelming. Even if you're lucky enough to have a table, you'll get several elbows and butt rubs to the back of the head. read more

Nothing says cocktail terrace like, well, an actual cocktail terrace. We came here on a Thursday night for a quick HH drink before heading out for dinner. It was mid September and a beautiful night, not too warm/cold and not too windy either. The atmosphere is chill with a bunch of people in business casual attire lounging on outdoor furniture while sipping on various concoctions. They have a special menu for upstairs but also offer all the drinks from downstairs as well. The lady friend ordered two separate cocktails, both she deemed delicious. I stuck with some local craft brews. The view is nice and not the one I imagined. The rooftop faces northeast so you look into Mt Adams. The service was good and our waitress was pleasant. It is a small space so don't be surprised if it's hard to sit your entire party at once. The only downside to my experience was the meatheads wearing track gear hollering at my girl when she walked by. I guess a high school education and dress pants are not a requirement for the rooftop, they should be. read more

This place is the perfect spot to go if on a date or wanting to enjoy a cocktail with a friend. It is very small and seating can be limited, but the views are great. It also has an upscale feel to it. The cocktails are somewhat expensive. read more

I went here after going to Oktoberfest with a few friends. I had heard mixed reviews of the place & wanted to check it out for myself. The doormen were nice even after we gave them crap about the wait list. ;-) I understand why they have it. It's not to be elitist it's probably to stay within fire code. The area is very small. You ride up on the elevator & walk onto the terrace area. There are white couches making intimate seating areas. There are probably 3 on one side & 2 on the adjacent side. The dirty martini I ordered was delicsious & my friends' drinks were good as well. You can't go wrong by using Pimm's in a drink. Overall, a decent experience. I wonder why they close so early though & what they'll do when cold weather hits? read more

Went for drinks on a Wednesday (6 PM) with a date. We were able to snag one of the couches on the far end of the terrace - closer to the hot tub. We didn't want to sit in the sun and they're much more comfortable. Waitress came around and kind of scoffed when I asked for a glass of water with the wine I ordered. My date ordered a beer. In close to an hour and a half, we ordered 2 drinks each. There were others around but not all of the tables were filled and we were enjoying the nice weather, we didn't feel rushed to leave until we finished our second drinks and the waitress brought our checks without asking and even took a half empty glass of water away. Personally, I felt like she was trying to get us out of there. The manager spoke to us on multiple occasions and was actually very kind. I wish he would have noticed her behavior. I could understand if there were people waiting to come in but it wasn't that busy and there were plenty of empty seats. Half the time we were there, the other half of the seating area we were in was completely empty. It does get windy up there but it's nice and the weather was absolutely perfect when we were there. But that also means that clothes get blown around and unfortunately, some of the waitresses wear skirts and thong underwear. I saw our waitresses bare butt on multiple occasions. Swanky space. Savvy staff. Good selection of alcohol. Had a sip of a signature cocktail called "The Wiseman" and was pleasantly surprised because I don't normally care for gin. They had a great selection of brews including some two local brands. I'm always down for an Angry Orchard but had never tried a Madtree. I liked it so much I bought a 6-pack when I got home. The service was stellar. The empty glasses didn't stay on the table long. But what works about this place is it's location and feel of exclusivity. There are only 35 people allowed on the terrace at once (or at least that was the number rumored through the grapevine). And being on the top of a building in downtown Cincinnati with a small selection of people made it a special experience. I've been to a number of rooftop bars in Denver but they just don't seem to exist in the Midwest. Hope to go again soon. Wear nice duds! read more
