This is what is advertised in the window. When I got my plate it had only rice, beans, and one burrito. No taco or lettuce & tomato. When I asked where the rest was, the server said you can only pick two items. I guess rice & beans is one item? While the service was good, the food was very mediocre. Overall: I have been to Coco Bongo probably about three times. The food is fine but they aren't as good as its predecessor in that location, La Rancherita. However, they have good prices and it is the only authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. So, I continue to go there when I'm not in the mood for places like Taco Bell and Chipotle. Service: Service is always friendly but unfortunately very very slow. They are often short on staff which makes it nearly impossible for the servers to be attentive. Vegetarian: So here's my problem, I ordered the Vegetarian Quesadillas and asked them to hold the mushrooms. When I got my food, I noticed that there were mushrooms in my food. So, I opened it up to pick out the mushrooms, and that is when I found the chicken lurking in my food. I'm actually glad that they ignored my request to hold the mushrooms, because that is how I avoided the meat. So, while they have several vegetarian dishes on the menu, I will not give it a good recommendation because of this mistake, and management did not even come out to apologize. The service is fast and efficient. Because of its location across from NC State's campus, it's often crowded with college kids which isn't bad, just an observation! Just before the lockdown happened, we met some friends on their way to RDU and decided on this place mainly because it was open and within walking distance of their hotel. Wow, just, WOW! This is one of those places where the food is so good, you eat until you are miserable. The staff was friendly and they didn't mind our loud kids. If I could give this -100 stars I would. I've never in my life had such a horrendous customer service experience. We sat down around 8:00 and waited around for a server to come for 45 min while everyone around us was getting served. We had to go inside twice and ask for a waiter to come help us while the waiters around us kept walking past us and ignoring our presence. When we finally ordered it took about 30 min for our food to come so we finally asked for them manager who didn't seem to give a shit about our concerns. To top it all off, our waitress ran one of our cards 3 times and claimed it was "declined" when a clear charge showed up in the account. We asked for the manager AGAIN about this issue who never showed up. At this point we just left because it wasn't even worth more of our time. Service is horrendous you will wait at least 15 minutes for the waiter to come and actually give you a menu. you will wait 30 minutes at least for your food ...and the servers are unprofessional. The food is very bland with little seasoning hardly any flavor don't be deceived by the pictures and everything is overpriced. Coco bongo has overcharged me at least 3 times despite tipping 20%. I have also had multiple friends who have noticed this restaurant adding on a couple of dollars to their bills after we've left. My favorite place to eat. I go at least once a week! I have had one or two bad experiences and had a very bad experience with a waiter, but the waiter is gone now and their updated crew is 20x better and very nice and hospitable. The only thing I have to say is that the prices went up once they updated their menu and now they charge for sour cream with a quesadilla also, which I feel should be free since they are complementary. read more

I typically come to Coco Bongo for lunch, during which service is quick and attentive and the food is delicious. I have been here twice in the past week, both for dinner. In both instances, service was TERRIBLE. In both instances, the servers came to my table ONCE to take our orders, after which a bus boy brought us our food. In both instances, my order was incorrect and the food was cold and poorly prepared. Tonight, I ordered four tacos. I received three of them, all three of which were the wrong item. At the very least, my margarita came quickly .. albeit weaker than usual. I might continue to frequent Coco Bongo for lunch, but for dinner? No thanks. read more

Probably the worst Taco Tuesday. 99 cent tacos. But only in shredded chicken or ground beef options. Both are tasteless in themselves with iceberg lettuce and cheese that was too salty in attempts to pair itself with the rest of the taco. Oh and a typical grocery store soft shell (hard shell was also an option). So should be maybe a half star. HOWEVER I did order the street tacos all on flour tortillas. Pick three. I chose al pastor, carnitas, and steak asada. I didn't think the steak was that remarkable. The pieces should have been cut smaller for more proportioned bites. The taste was slightly less than well done with a mild char taste. Not terrible but I wasn't impressed. The carnitas has a great texture to it but I wanted it to taste a little less salty. Otherwise I would have been more impressed. BUT the al pastor was actually really good. The flavor was there. Charred without being burnt, balanced with seasoning, and overall delicious. A few fatty pieces that bursted with flavor was adequately mixed with more lean pieces. This is what helped to redeem the establishment. I do wish that the tacos came with more "wet" sides. They came with "dry" but solid portions of refried beans (of which there was nothing significant to speak of) and rice (again, insignificant). Like, I wish there was some lettuce and tomatoes at the least. Sour cream at the most. Maybe even some hot sauce on the table? Overall, a solid taco joint being so close to campus. However, I would not go out of my way just to come here. So, like a 3 star place I guess. read more

I went here recently for a margarita and let me tell you. I've never really complained about a drink being too strong but it seems like I've met my match. I had one. ONE. I have never experienced the contortion of time to this extent before. Simultaneously the longest and shortest duration spent at a restaurant. My body beckoned me back to reality but my mind said no. I might have been physically at coco bongo but my mind was thrown into a void of everlasting stupor, untethered by the weight of reality, floating forever into infinity, possibly never to be seen again. The two stars are for the great, sweet staff. The lack of more stars is due to the overwhelming smell of sewage last week in the restaurant coming from the bathrooms. I gave it the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe on of the toddlers in the next table over had an accident..however the smell lingered and got worse after they left. My companion went to the bathroom and confirmed it was rising sewage. Why we stayed I do not know, probably because for some reason the restaurant was full and the waitress was very nice and seemed to be aware of the elephant in the room. A few other customers were visibly gagging at the smell. To top if off the food was bland and I could make better myself for 1/10 of the price. El Rodeo off Moore Sq has the best Tex-Mex in town. They should close down until they get their sewage smell problem fixed - I am sure this is some kind of health code violation. read more

Went to Bar Taco a few weeks ago and thought it was awful having spent like $100 for 4. We go here and get real tacos for $0.99 tonight. I ordered a Burrito though and my wife ordered the Veggie Quesadillas. My daughter and son-in-law ordered the tacos and we left full and for $40 and the food was awesome. Coco Bongo is pretty average, but at their prices it's definitely a place to come. Their lunch special deal is super filling for under $7. Chips and salsa are provided to munch on while the food is waiting. I would recommend the cheese dip to go with your chips. As for dishes, the chimichangas are bomb as well as the enchiladas and the volcán. A lot of the flavor of the food does get covered their cheese sauce but that stuff is dope so I'm okay with it. Their food is a little on the salty side of things though. The place itself was is very accessible being on the non-construction part of Hillsborough -- thank god. Very bad service and the staff was racist. We were two asian people who went there for dinner today. The server, a lady, was rude right from the start. I also noticed a stark difference between how the server was behaving with us and the way she was behaving with the white families sitting behind and in front of us. She was ignoring us and was abrupt and rude when she did speak to us. In comparison she was super sweet to the white people sitting around us. This is so disheartening. Don't we deserve to go out on a Friday night without being disrespected and returning with such a bad aftertaste? Never going back here. read more

Came here on a whim and sat outside because it was a beautiful day. The food was good, the service was not. After asking the server multiple questions about the drink menu, she couldn't give me an answer for half the questions I asked....shouldn't you know what's inside your sangria? Then it took me 15 minutes just to get a glass of merlot that I ordered l, which ended up coming out as red sangria....um....??????????? I didn't question the drink she brought out because I was afraid it would take another 15 minutes to come out. At least the sangria was tasty. The complimentary chips comes out with salsa, and this white sauce that's tasty. Thank god I had that to hold me over through my ordering process. Next I asked the waitress for a chile rellano to start with, and a recommendation between two dishes. I ended up choosing the volcan based off her recommendation. The food came out quick, but I definitely got my chile rellano with my food and not before hand like I had asked. Then the recommended dish didn't come out the right way. The serve took it back, and brought a new one about 5 min later....unfortunately it still was somewhat of a let down because my rice has hard bits in it and the beans had hardened so much it looked cracked on top. Perhaps it sat under the heat lamp a little too long, because it definitely wasn't made to order. The server told me that the tortilla was fried...it definitely wasn't fried both times the dish came out. Due to my unfortunate server experience, I didn't even order takeout to take home like I had planned. All in all, food is good and service could use some serious work. read more

I had a party of 6 on a Friday night, and although we were seated immediately we waited quite a while for food. The waitress was very polite. 5 people got their food and the 6th person waited almost 10 more minutes to receive theirs. Everyone enjoyed their food, just wish the wait time and the sanitation rating would improve. They currently have a B sanitation rating. I would return in hopes that this would improve. read more
