I have been to Coco Bongo a few times over the past year and have usually enjoyed my experience there. The service is good here and I love the drink specials they have. they have a drink special for every day of the week which is great if you are looking for both drinks and food. The food is pretty average, I find that it is pretty typical of a Mexican restaurant. On Tuesdays the restaurant is very popular because of their margarita specials, so if you plan on going then I recommend going early. read more

Best Mexican restaurant in Raleigh. The service is unparalleled by any other restaurant. The servers and hosts are kind and attentive and genuinely enjoyable to talk to. Alfonso and Roberto in particular are amazing servers and people. The food is excellent. I've become a regular (in no small part due to the $4 drink specials on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and I've never found a menu item I didn't love. Also, they have THE best frozen margs in town. Yeah, not a good experience​ at Coco Bongo. First, you walk in and you are blown away at the level that the music is playing. We were seated and had someone ask us for our drinks, and then we waited, and waited, and waited. Our server forgot about us, thankfully another server came and got our food order. The original server came and admitted that he forgot. We were given our food by the guy that took our order (not our server) My quesadilla​ was burnt the chile relleno was undercooked​ and was stiff. I picked all of the blacked portions off of the tortilla. No one came to ask us if our food was okay. I get why people go there since it's the only Mexican​n food place near NC State, other than Taco Bell. I'll just make the drive out to an actual Mexican restaurant​ next time. read more

First off, the menu looks way too busy and isn't laid out in an intelligible manner. I know that seems like a minor complaint, but it's still a problem. Now, I was greeted by the staff and seated. Everyone was pleasant, no problems there. The they brought out complimentary chips. The chips were fine. The salsa was also fine. Nothing special. However, the chips were served with a white sauce. I thought this was strange and so asked the waitress what it was. It was tartar sauce. They served tortilla chips with tartar sauce. What? She said some people like it, apparently. Next, I ordered a tamal and a carnitas taco. The carnitas was packed with unrendered gristle and was inedible. I ordered my taco soft and when asked if I wanted any toppings, I asked for cilantro and onions. I was told they didn't have any cilantro. Mind you, they have a "street taco" item listed on their menu... As for the tamal, it was covered in what appeared to be enchilada sauce with a tasteless white cheese. The masa was glue like in consistency. The chicken filling tasted fine. They had no other options available on the tamales. The beans were very loose and over spiced. They weren't inedible but they were not to my taste. The rice tasted exactly like a box of Goya sazon. Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant and I would be very surprised if they lasted more than a few months without completely reworking their menu. read more

I went back to the restaurant to have them fix the mistake and they were very apologetic and gave me two extra chicken tacos for my time! I usually Love this place but today was bad. I placed an order thru DoorDash, which i normally do every time I order, but you're unable to make modifications on the app. Cool, no problem. I usually just call and ask them to add or take off an ingredient, in which they do. Today, I placed an order and I called and asked for a modification, again which is usually what I do, and they said okay. (Modification was super small too btw. No rice in one of the meals). Anyway, my order came and it had no rice in both meals. So I called back, (something is ALWAYS wrong with their phone too, sounds like a robot or nails on a chalk board when you call in) and kindly let them know they did my order incorrectly. The man proceeds to say that's doordash fault, we don't control their app. Huh?! I'm like I called and spoke with you to give you the modification. Phone starts to chop up, I have to hang up and call back 10 xs. A woman answers, I'm kindly explaining the problem. Phone starts to chop again. Call back, now they're screening my calls. No one picked up. Or has picked up. I'm not one to leave a bad reviews because I support small business but today I spent $40 (plus countless other times) and half of dinner is going to waste. Crazy that you still try to support local restaurants, especially during the pandemic & this is the treatment you get. Food is great..service today was TRASH. Super disappointed. read more

Coco Bongo was awesome! I came here with a group of friends and we sat outside. Sometimes you have to worry about service being attentive enough when you are sitting outside of the restaurant but Coco Bongo had that covered! The chips and salsa they start you off with were super good & I had a strawberry margarita (on the rocks) that was perfect! I had the chicken enchiladas which were great and the side of rice and beans were really good too. The only downside was when one of my friends didn't get her drink after the server had come to our table to check on us 3x's. They were pretty busy though so we all understand people can get side-tracked and make mistakes! I definitely suggest Coco Bongo! read more

Coco bongo is definitely better than the last restaurant in this spot. They have great drink specials almost every day of the week and the food is okay! It was a bit too heavy for me, which is why I'm not giving more stars. My friend was very happy with his shrimp tacos. I had a spinach enchilada (I enjoyed the enchilada sauce) and a veggie quesadilla. I think the quesadilla was what bothered me, though I enjoyed it while eating. They have pretty good lunch deals so it's great for anyone working or studying at ncsu. I was really impressed with our server. I believe her name was Jenny. I made a reservation for here and the man on the phone confirmed it since it was new year's eve and a big party of 8 people. We come into the place and the young girl hostess doesn't even look our way and is too busy on her phone. I o up and say that I have a reservation. She doesn't check anything and seats us right next to a family and we're at a table meant for 5 people...so we're crammed. We see a bigger table that we can push together and no one is over there so we decide to ask if we can move. When she walks by us next my friend says excuse me ma'am and she ignored us. Next time she walked by my friend said the same thing but louder and again ignored us so we went up to her and she still tried to ignore us. We asked if we could move and she said yeah whatever. The waiters were nice but this hostess was quite frankly a bitch. Not someone you want at the front. She was rude, ignored us, and didn't even try to act nice. read more

So. Our server didn't know what 'on the rocks' meant when ordering a margarita. There may or may not have been a "seed" (a bean) at the bottom of my margarita. after waiting an hour for my food i was expecting something just as good as last time. instead, i was handed a chimichanga drenched in queso (making my quesadilla unedible) as well as a chimichanga with little to no pork in it. so i just ate bread. Notice how there is red sauce on my plate? I come here because its convenient to my apartment and they have decent food and drinks. The service has always been alright but I have had bad service my past two visits. This last time, I ordered a Baja salad which clearly shows on the menu that it's extra to add meat. I didn't ask for any meat but my salad came out with chicken. Our server, Evelyn, didn't come to check on us after our food showed up so I went ahead and started eating around the chicken. I didn't eat the chicken and when the server came back with our checks, I let her know that she charged me for chicken when I didn't ask for any. She proceeded to argue with me and told me that I should've specified that I wanted no meat (when the salad doesn't come with meat on it). She made us feel extremely uncomfortable and refused to take the chicken off of my bill. Not really a big deal, but I shouldn't have to argue with the waiter to take off something that I didn't even order. I liked this place a lot but probably won't be coming back any time soon. read more

Last night friends and I ate here. The food was disgusting and the customer service was terriable. I went into the bathroom and they were you sanitizer bucket to catch toliet water. That is so unsanitary!!! Our server was not helpful at all, he kept walking away. My friend had to ask him to speak in English because he was only talking to my other friend in Spainish. disaster! coco bongo should be ashamed to allow food like this out the door! hard shell beef tacos--soaking wet on 1 side & fell apart, had to toss the shells. all of our ground beef is totally bland & has weird, bitter aftertaste. enchiladas with meat has no cheese & barely any sauce on top?? no cheese inside or xtra sauce i requested! very dry on top. i have no enchilada sauce to add! never in life saw this! will toss! nachos has burnt & burnt tasting, soggy yellow tortillas with 2 small green ones & rice specs on bottom of pan?? like scraps off another plate maybe? where did the green slivers of chips & specs of rice come from then?? no cheese between layers of chips, dry! had to reconstruct small portion but cannot finish, too soggy/gross,made me feel sick, lost appetite. tossed most chips, too greasy. the paper bag of side chips, totally greasy bag. i may try making taco salad out of the beef & taco fillings. will have to add my own lettuce, tomato, cheese..! i asked for dry burritos with ground beef, cheese & onions inside, we rec'd them glued together with cheese on top anyway with just meat inside! they are for several ppl so had to pry them apart, bottom very soggy. didn't want enchilada type burritos. guess they assumed burritos were for 1 person eating out of 1 pan! will toss! fajitas bland, could not see onions so had to peel/cut 1 up! may as well have cooked with all that i had/have to do trying to embellish/season/salvage the partial mess left. i was already exhausted-thus the delivery! we are still hungry but turned off! only rec'd 2 small cups of flavorless, watery salsa & they did not send taco sauce, for 10 item meal? dry fajitas? liquid spilled into the bag, so everything was wet & messy! had to spend time cleaning/wiping-- wasting paper towels! rec'd an immediate partial refund from grubhub (thanks) but am going to request full refund as this is just unacceptable food!!! should be a crime to serve it. i don't recommend this place at all! read more

I think this restaurant is good if you order carefully; we've been several times and have found the shrimp fajitas served with grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes to be fabulous - shrimp grilled to perfection; the chicken and beef fajitas were a little dry. The guacamole - both the tableside and the smaller side are really really good. Chips are fresh, drink specials are great, salsa is a little sweet but fresh, and the shrimp tacos are delicious. Unimpressed by the rather flavorless rice, and the cheese enchiladas I ordered once came out as flat, brittle, over-crisped and nearly inedible. Chicken enchiladas are plump and good - so I'm not sure about that inconsistency. Wait staff is super friendly and attentive - overall we have figured out what to order and how to enjoy eating at this cheerful and convenient Mexican restaurant on Hillsborough street while visiting NCSU children. read more
