Fiiiinally a smoothie place that doesn't have boosts and powders to make your smoothie taste like chalk! Cocoa Banana has smoothies done right. Fruit, juice and yogurt. I like the menu that allows you to compare and contrast the different smoothies visually. They keep it simple with pretty pictures and stickers. Oh, and they only have one size! I ordered the Larry, which has strawberries, bananas, yogurt and orange juice. Not too tart, not overpowered by banana - perfect. The staff are friendly and the smoothies are made quickly. This is the place to go if you just want a simple smoothie downtown. I will definitely be going back all summer! read more

I used to eat here all the time when I was working from the office in Pioneer Square. That means I went here about 3 times / week. Pioneer Square is (in my opinion) lacking a lot of healthy food choices so this place fulfills that need. This place is immaculately clean. The vegetables, meat, and toppings are always fresh. The price is cheaper than other salad bars downtown and the quality is so much better. Their fat-free raspberry vinaigrette is amazing on my romaine & grilled chicken, ham & turkey, and hard boiled eggs salad. Now that I work downtown I miss this place tremendously. If you are in / around Pioneer Square during the weekday lunch hours give this place a go. Oh yeah, it's only open from 11am to 3pm or something like that. read more

It's been exciting watching this "smoothie place" grow into "the salad bar" and relocate! I remember when they first opened like six years ago, and I was worried they wouldn't last the winter. But they have! \(^_^)/ The smoothies are good, and the cool thing is they named most of them after some of the first customers. The salad bar is reliable -- technically everything there is from Costco or someplace and you can make it yourself, but not having to cart your own ingredients to work every morning is super convenient. I've seen salad bars with better selections, but what makes this one good is the fact that it's decently priced and always well-stocked. Echoing other Yelpers' comments about the salad bar being CLEAN -- it makes a big difference! Also, the staff are friendly and great. While I really like going to Cocoa Banana, the owners condone unsanitary practices that violate Health codes established to protect the consumer.... There is a serious risk of cross-contamination that starts with the owner down through her employees. Trying to nicely point out the issue, my comments were dismissed and I was encouraged to post my comments to Yelp by a feisty cashier. The owner prepares food without sanitary hand coverings(health code violation), placing hands on food items and into blender containers without washing hands between tasks(health code violation). On weds, the scallions were low and two utensils were upside down in the bin with a small amount of wilted scallions. I was happy to see the owner bring out a new bin, but walked away when she poured the wilted scallions that were exposed to the hand portion of the utensils on top of the new scallions. (health code violation) Although the salad bar is a good selection at a great price, the small amount of daily savings is not worth the risk of becoming seriously ill. read more

If you're a vegetarian, or going to lunch with a vegetarian, this place deserves serious consideration. They do have chicken and salami and whatever if you're not vegetarian/vegan. Worst case scenario, the carnivores in the group can always go next door to Bakeman's and the whole group can meet up for lunch in the Waterfall Garden Park. So on to the rating. I haven't tried the juice or smoothie options here, only the salad. The salad is a great choice. You may like Market Fresh better, but you do get plenty of fresh, great choices here and the difference between $5 per pound and $7 per pound does account for something. If you end up spending $10 you have a ginormous pile of food. I was under $6 last time and it was plenty filling. It wasn't very crowded at all on my last visit. We blasted through, got weighed out, and paid up. And speaking of Waterfall Garden Park, it's only a couple of blocks away and a great place to enjoy your salad or smoothie or whatever from Bakeman's . read more

Nut-allergy folks!!! This place will probably work for you!!!! Yelp turned me on to Cocoa Banana. And I'm so glad. Cheap, quick, healthy, basic salad bar - fantastic service, super efficient. 5 stars from me, b/c as a nut allergy sufferer, salad bars usually scare the beejesus out of me. Cocoa Banana has *mostly* freed me from this worry. They still offer nuts for salads, but they are safely contained on a *separate island* from the rest of the salad bar goodies. No fear of accidental walnuts in the cottage cheese. Good food, good service - minimized food allergy paranoia = awesome downtown/pioneer square lunch spot. read more

On its own merits, I'd give three stars for this juice and salad bar. It is what it says it is, but the salad topping selections are pretty basic; you'll find far better selection at a place like Market Fresh. And the juice selections are way too heavy on the berries and sweets, with not enough green and veggie options. My carrot-ginger-orange juice was tasty, but I was hard-pressed to find anything on the menu that wasn't fruity. When compared to the far-superior Juicy Cafe (OMG YUM), Cocoa Banana gets two stars. That place kicks this place's butt. So hard. Cocoa Banana is a little further from my office than Market Fresh and Mel's Market. After hearing some buzz, I decided to go down there. I like the selection of greens and veggies. I was surprised not to see more fruit there. In fact, the only fruit I saw was pineapple. I loved the selection of protein. I didn't get a chance to try any of the smoothies or juices but I hear good things. I like the sustainability in bringing your own bowls. The best part for me was the selection of nuts, goldfish, and other yummy toppings. I was disappointed in the price. It was $5.99 a pound and I heard it was cheaper. The cost of a salad that I thought would fill me was $7.05. That's not a great deal. read more

The world needs more Cocoa Bananas. I no longer work downtown, and would rrrrreally appreciate it if Ballard had a similar salad bar. I used to eat here at least once a week. At Cocoa Banana, I could put together a clean, nutritious lunch, that would provide long lasting energy. My usual was spinach, green onions, broccoli, purple cabbage, carrots, red beans or garbanzo beans, maybe an egg, red bell peppers, dry tuna, cashews, crushed red pepper, black pepper, and balsamic vinegar. When I wasn't feeling so strict, I had plenty of other "treats" available to mix in with a salad. Cocoa Banana and Red Bowls are the healthiest options for lunch in that area of the city. read more

This is the perfect place for a quick escape when someone you know tries to con you into going to Bakeman's. It's right next door, so once you cross the Bakeman's threshold, hear the yelling, and come to your senses you can make a mad dash and scramble up the stairs to this little joint next door. This is your basic weigh and pay salad bar. No frills, nothing particularly exciting in the way of toppings, with the exception of goldfish crackers. I don't happen to particularly like Goldfish crackers, but I can appreciate the cuteness factor. Plus, Cocoa Banana has no seating, so you will probably have to sneak back next door to sit with your friends, and a happy little goldfish may improve your morale as you brave the bright fluorescents and listen to the litany of insults being rained down by the Bakeman's cashier. The salad bar is undergoing an expansion, so hopefully it will soon be more yelpworthy. I did try the signature mango smoothie while I was there, and this was definitely a nice treat. It actually tasted like fresh pureed mango, rather than frozen mango indistinguishably mixed with other fruits and juices. It could be that the smoothies (and the Bakeman's dodging), rather than the salads, are the real reasons to check this place out. read more

The problem I have with salad bar places is how much I love to pile on the heavy stuff, like cottage cheese and cauliflower bits. And since salad bar prices are $100 a pound I tend to over do it money wise when I visit these places. So after avoiding this place for several months I finally went here. This is the only salad bar in Pioneer Square. Payment is by the pound. There are many choices of fix-ins and dressings. I noticed many people came through the door and took their food to go. They only have 4 seats and the dining area is set up like bar style tables against a wall. It's a great place for healthy people. Love these guys- have for years! I always get a smoothie with a substitute, and they have never done it wrong (add fresh ginger into banana.. omg), the salad bar is always packed with healthy goodness, and they've never been anything but friendly and smiling. I'd say it was perfect, but honestly I miss being able to sit down in there... sometimes you can use a little break from work, and there is not tons of good places to sit outside and eat in the Square. If you're looking for a fruit smoothie rather than a protein smoothie this is a great place to get it. Despite my yelp reviews, I typically bring my lunch, but when I am need in a quick and convenient lunch, this is my spot. I have never had the smoothies, but the salad is pretty darn decent. At first glance, I was a little underwhelmed. After putting together my salad and eating it, however, I was quite pleased. I love the protein choices, something salad critical seems missing, but I'm usually in a rush, so I can't put my finger on it. They do have other choices, like pot stickers that I don't expect. I can't say the staff have been friendly, but that's okay, I'm usually in a rush, so I just grab, pay, and go. My go-to spot for smoothies in downtown Seattle! To avoid the lunch rush, I usually try to avoid going in between 12-1pm. The "Tony" includes chocolate, peanut butter, froyo (I think?), banana, and 1 shot of espresso. At a total of $4.75, it's quite the steal! It is a little rich, but it's perfect for a chocolate/PB craving. I have also tried the Larry, which is a little too tarty for my liking. I keep forgetting to customize, so make sure you get what you want when you order! This place is my go-to smoothie place. I work near this place so I went in to check it out and ever since I tried their smoothie, I've been going more often on sunny days. Their smoothies taste fresh and it doesn't taste like they put in extra sugar, powder, and all that junk. The sweetness comes from the juice, fruits. It's only one size though, about the size of starbucks's grande. There is also a salad bar as well, which I looks alright...i have not tried, but I think it's clever that you can bring in your own bowl - can't recall if there's something to it if you bring your own bowl. read more

This place doesn't have the greatest salad bar selection, but you get the basics for a reasonable price. No hot foods like at Market Fresh, but then again there is no line either. Their smoothies are good. A pretty good selection on flavors... from mango, banana colada to peanut butter, chocolate espresso with banana. Can you say lots of calories on the last one? I've been going here 1-3 times a week since I started working in Pioneer Square a little over a month ago. At first I was wary because the lighting is kind of dim, which makes it look kind of sad inside but I noticed right away how clean everything was ("dark and dingy" tend to go hand-in-hand sometimes -- not in this case). Everything on the salad bar is always fresh, no wilted lettuce or wrinkly tomatoes to dig through. They have all the standard stuff -- tomatoes, broccoli, bell peppers, various beans -- as well as some cold salads such as macaroni, potato, and some sort of rice salad. They even have chicken potstickers for some reason (I would try one but I'm vegetarian). There is a good variety of dressings and toppings. I believe it's $5.99/pound which isn't bad compared to some places. I have not tried their smoothies but a few of my coworkers say they're yummers. The gals that work there are always nice, which is a plus. It would be nice to see some different items appear every once in a while -- if they could find something that's not already included in their large selection. read more

It is what it is. That's not saying much, I know, especially when from the outside, it's not clear what it is. Cocoa Banana is a take-out salad bar and smoothie joint, although the name and outside signage suggests that it may be a retail store, a business, maybe even a foodservice wholesaler. Upon walking in, you are struck immediately by two things: the spectacular cleanliness of the place and the strange menu. There are a few pre-fab smoothie choices, along with a chart of about 20 names cross-referenced with smoothie ingredients. They have all the typical stuff (cocoa, bananas, fruit, yogurt, protein powder etc.) but also some atypical things like aloe vera juice. The chart, I gather, is to show what these 20 people (employees? frequent customers?) use in their smoothies, and also to list the available options. I did not order a smoothie, but several co-workers swear by them. My companion got what I'll call a multi-berry. Not the actual name; there are only a few named smoothies on the menu. A bunch of blue and red frozen berries blended together with I assume sugar and very little water, so it's almost like a sorbet. Nice. I came for the salad bar, which was very fresh, very clean and quite boring. Greens, veggies, fruit, tofu, chicken, tuna, lots of dressings and toppings but except for the chicken gyoza, nothing that strayed from the salad bar rule book. The per pound price ($5.08) was very reasonable, considering Market Fresh (just a few blocks away) charges $6.99. One really cool thing about Cocoa Banana is that you can bring in your own container, bowl, whatever -- they will weigh it beforehand and charge you just for the salad. Very progressive. Not sure how often I'd come here, but I would recommend it for anyone wanting to visit a salad bar without getting tempted to throw a bit of fried shrimp into the box. Or those who like to design their own smoothies and maybe see their names on the menu someday. read more

I loves me a good salad bar and Cocoa Banana is just that. They have a large selection of vegetables and a few side dishes like mac/potato salad, noodles or cottage cheese. My only complaint, as a fatty and self proclaimed "ranch dressing connoisseur," is that their ranch tastes like it is straight out of a bottle and not very good. This place is right around the corner from where I work, so I like to hit it on the days when I want a drink but am coffeed-out. I've tried about 4 flavors, most recently the "Tony" which was rich and delicious. The price is right at around $4 and the quantity is right too. I really don't want a smoothie to ruin my dinner, and I'm afraid that's what would happen if I dared try and Emerald City or Jamba past 3pm. Haven't tried the salad bar yet, but it looks inviting.
