I thought the Seattle area didn't really have amazing Southern BBQ until I tried the food here at Outsider! You know it's good when you pull up the establishment and they have not only a long line, but also a paper dictating what is sold out, which they update on a 10-15 minute interval. Waiting in line is the most time consuming part of this experience, as we probably waited 20-30 minutes to get to the front to place our order - which is good sign! You can definitely formulate what meats and sides you want as you get closer to the front. Parking for the restaurant is a bit difficult, I think the only options we found while visiting was streetside, and we were fortunate to find a spot only a block away. I could totally see it being impossible to find parking when it gets really busy in the area. Once you get your food, there is plenty of seating, from high tops, to booths, to tables, to outdoor seating with a fire pit. We got a good variety of items, which I'll review a couple down below: Brisket: A good brisket with a nice visible smoke ring. Similar to the pork belly, you can tell the skill of a barbecue restaurant from how their brisket is, and this brisket is delicious! Really meaty and pleasant smoke flavor. I think we did get a leaner cut of brisket as there wasn't as much fat to help with the leanness. Beef Cheek: A delicious cut of meat that melts in the mouth, and has a pleasant smokey flavor. Out of the three cuts of meat, this one was unfortunately salted the heaviest. The first couple of bites are delicious and really delicious, but it goes really overwhelming the more you eat it. If you order this, definitely get some sides to help. Pomegrante Pork Belly: A solid BBQ pork belly that has a pleasing fatty crust with a meaty interior. This is what I would consider a good baseline for a reputable barbecue restaurant. It is advertised as pomegrante pork belly, but I unfortunately wasn't able to taste any flavor of pomengrate - maybe a tiny bit in the glaze/bark but that could just be attributed to the sugar. Mac and Cheese: A pretty comforting side! bechamel sauce is really creamy and fully coats each noodle. The noodles were at the sweet spot of soft and having enough integrity to hold their shape. Cherry and Rhubarb Cobbler: Wow, this is an amazing dessert! I haven't had a cobbler where they added cardamom to the crust before, and I think it works spectacularly. The cardamom gives a nice floral taste to the crust, which is complemented by the tart and fruity filling. I think this is one of the better if not best desserts I've had a barbecue shop, and the small tweaks made were creative and delicious! In the end, I think we paid about $100 for everything you see here. Having been to a couple of BBQ places, I would say that it is pretty standard pricing. Good BBQ does take a lot of effort and it does come at a premium. Outsider BBQ is absolutely delicious - if you are looking to get some comforting food, they definitely have you covered. I would totally revisit to try their items that got sold out (missed the beef cheeks, need to try those!) the time we visited! read more

I mean, it isn't BBQ from the south, but it comes close. There's typically a long time and it's not fast either, so it's quite popular. You order at the front, you bring it to your table, and you bus yourself. The first time we went, we actually left but most of the items were sold out, so we came back a week later and earlier in the day. The also close quite early, around 8 or 9pm depending on the day. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and it's communal. We got the Pitmasters that serves around 4-5 people, there was 3 of us and we ate the rest the following day. Outsider Barbecue was such an unexpected find. We were in Fremont looking for a casual bite and almost went to a brewery, but stumbled on this spot instead and I'm so glad we did. It's tucked into a more residential area near the Fremont and Ballard intersection, so parking is easy and free. The space is open and airy with garage-style doors, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and fire pits outside. It's counter service with bussing, which keeps things casual and easy. Even around 3 to 4 pm, there was a steady line, and I never saw it fully die down. Staff were friendly and confident in the menu, and one told us it wouldn't be our last visit. He was right. We ordered the corn casserole, beef rib, brisket, mac and cheese, collard greens, kale Caesar, and jalapeño cheddar sausage. Everything was excellent. The beef rib and sausage were the highlights for me, super tender with great smoky flavor, and the sauces were spot on. This is some of the best barbecue I've had in Seattle. It's not cheap, but portions are generous and the quality justifies it. Three of us shared everything, had leftovers, and spent about $150 before drinks. Hands down one of the best bbq spot. Did we get too much food for two people? Absolutley! Did we regret it? Absolutley NOT! (Left over for dinner) Was it expensive? Got here at like 7:30 on a nice Thursday night and the place was pretty packed, with most of the tables full maybe 3/4 open by the time we sat. It was fast and easy to order and the staff we talked to was very friendly and told us how much we ordered was good for 3 people but recommended to try the pork belly as in opinion it's their best item on the menu at the time (they did say that the pork cheeks on the weekend is the actual best tho). Overall I would say he was right and this was a good amount of food in the end and we all had a little box of leftovers to split and take home. The brisket was pretty good and the pork belly was very good and so soft and good, I would say all the other meats were ok. I really just didn't care for the pulled pork. The sausage was alright but it got hard really quick. As for the sides, none of us liked the potato salad and it was pretty full at the end of the meal when we threw it away. The Mac and cheese was our favorite and that was emptied out quick. I liked the collared greens more than the street corn, and I would order the greens again but not sure about the corn. I would say the things they're good at they're very good but everything else was just mid. The brisket. Oooooh the brisket. Juicy, well cooked, flavorful, and fall-apart-delicious. I think the beef rib would have been equally good based on what I saw but we didn't get that. We also loved the corn casserole (warm, soft, creamy), fries, pickles, and mmmmmmm banana pudding. I loved the smell of the place, real woody campfire smells but nothing smokey or overpowering. It had an open wall even on a cool day which looked out on a fire pit. The staff was great, nice to explain things and let me pay for dessert and grab it at the end. On top of it all we were leaving and I showed my son the open room to the smokers. The pitmaster (owner?) was right there and invited us in, showed us the setup, and explained it all. Super nice guy and knows his stuff. So why not 5 stars? Mainly because of a couples smaller misses, the price, and that I've had lots of BBQ around the country and relative to that scope it's hard to go 5 in all of washington. The price isn't unusual in Seattle and if you got the sandwich meal you'd be right in lunch range anywhere. Skip the cobbler (heavy spice...clove?), skip the lemonade (it wasn't clear it was just a bottle of minute maid for $6.50), and I'd skip the pork ribs (and I'm usually a pork-bbq-only guy) and just go brisket. Sausage had some nice flavor, but casing was a bit much and I'm more a fan of hot links. Neither of us liked the BBQ sauce that much...not bad just not anything that popped. As I write this my son just warmed up some of our leftover brisket and said it was as good as yesterday. I smell it now and I'm fighting the urge to dig in myself. People are raving about this place and since we love BBQ, we were really excited to try it. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. I've had some great BBQ across the country, and this one didn't quite measure up for us. First, the ordering setup creates a lot of bottleneck. While you're ordering, they're also trying to get your drinks and slice all of your meat in front of you like a butcher counter. In theory it's cool to see, but in practice it felt pretty inefficient and slowed the line down quite a bit. What you see in my photo came out to $70+ for one side and one beer, including tax and tip. Food-wise: Prime brisket - unfortunately very dry Pork spare ribs - probably the best of what we tried, but not quite the tender, fall-off-the-bone texture we expected Jalapeño cheddar sausage - the casing was very tough and chewy. Our knife couldn't even cut through it, so we eventually had to tear it open to get to the meat. Corn casserole - sadly not very memorable Overall, we didn't feel the meat quality or flavor matched the price point. One other note: customers also have to bus their own tables. You don't need me to tell you that Outsider BBQ is a game changer in Seattle. Texas style BBQ a cut--actually many cuts--above the rest. This food is bonkers. Excellent, smoky, fatty, charred, dreamy. You can tell that it is made by someone serious as hell. Once, we showed up when much of their menu was sold out, so we were left to try the chopped beef sandwich, considered the dregs. It was so good, we almost couldn't understand why anyone would order anything else. But then, the next time, we had the brisket and the beef rib. If you have a chance to try the beef rib, don't miss it. Also, while you won't even need it, both of their house-made BBQ sauces are exquisite. Not cloyingly sweet, mainly an ode to black pepper. I agree with other folks that the sides offerings could be improved (and, given that this was the main critique even at the time of their opening but nothing has changed, I suspect the chef disagrees!). That being said, the corn casserole is comforting and totally unique to our food scene here. Plus, that thick banana pudding is exquisite, so it's best you save room from the sides for dessert. They have 2 kinds of BBQ sauces on the table, a red one and a yellow mustard based one. Both paired well with the meats. Our favorite meats were the brisket and the jalapeño cheddar sausage but all the meats were tasty, had good smoke flavor and were tender. The pickles helped cut through the richness of the meat. I made a sandwich with the brisket, white bread and pickles, very tasty! The mac and cheese was solid, and I enjoyed the potato salad but it has a lot of fresh herbs like dill so might not be everyone's cup of tea. The ambience is very casual, there's indoor and outdoor seating. It's family friendly and there's a small play area for kids. So setting that expectation, I find the price to be reasonable for what you get. The brisket and beef cheek are great too but I really enjoyed the flavor in the beef rib. There's two sauces on the table, I personally enjoy the red bbq sauce a bit more but I like both to mix and match since the yellow mustard like taste sauce adds some nice acid and variety. All the sides are solid and you can't go wrong with any order here. A single beef rib will likely cost $50-70 bucks as a heads up so if you want a variety of meats, come with a group cause it's going to be worth it. A wonderful bbq and beer spot in Fremont. If you haven't read the background story in Seattle Met, the owner grew up in Istanbul, moved to Austin and learned his bbq craft before emigrating to Seattle and we are lucky that he did. His bbq is perfectly crafted with brisket and ribs literally falling off the bones to delicious precision. The beef cheeks were a nice surprise that melted in the mouth. The pulled pork was a tad dry but reinvented with a squirt of their wonderful table sauces. Only complaint about the pork ribs was that the unctuous cartilage was weird and undigestible. All meat prices are listed by the pound but you can toggle down the quantity. Highly recommend a quarter pound of several choices to experience all the greatness. If you have salt intolerance, this is not the place for you. Of the sides, the Mac and cheese was way over salty. All meals come with thick slices of thick elevated Wonder white bread that can turn any clump of meat into a handy sandwich. And with the house made pickles, peppers and marinated red onions that comes on every plates, a self created Sammy makes a lot of sense. The two house made marinades on every table add to the experience - one a vinegar tasting mustard and another a classic deep bbq red sauce are exceptional. Beers on tap feature local Seattle superstars like Seapine as well as well classic Texas bottled brews like Shiner Bock. Excellent seating inside with a couple flat screens showing sports on the weekend and a flame-throwing fire pit outside to keep the open front porches warm. Speaking of warmth, can't say enough about the owner and what appears to be his family who run the place. They all come around and make sure your experience is exceptional and always ask if there's anything they can do to make it better, Parking is a challenge as street spots are sparse and the place has no lot of its own. I came here on last weekend for lunch with a craving for Texas BBQ, and this definitely satisfied the craving. There was easy street parking right outside, which was great on a weekend, and I could already smell the food from outside. The service was friendly and helpful, and I thought the food was so good. I got a sampler plate with the brisket, pulled pork, pork spare ribs, jalapeño cheddar sausage, Mac and cheese, and some toast. My favorites were the brisket and pork spare ribs since they were so tender and flavorful, and Mac and cheese for the black pepper flavor. I also enjoyed the two sauces that were on the table. He was actually really good at his job, we ordered brisket and it started at an end piece and he cut us the end and then cut to the middle tot not only give us the end... now that is a good cut. Went to Outsider BBQ & Beer Garden on Sunday and we essentially ordered a lb of all meats. I did ask about lean or fatty brisket and the cashier told me they do a mix. So that made me very happy. Overall I give the bbq a 4/5. It's hands down the best brisket I have had in Seattle. It's moist, tender, great smoke ring and delicious flavor. After the brisket, the beef cheeks (on special for the day we went), the jalapeño cheddar sausage and the ribs were my faves after that. The beef cheeks were so tender and almost melted in your mouth. The sausage was super moist and packed with flavor too and had a nice snap and bite. The pork ribs were tender and fall off the bone without actually falling off the bone. I dont know about you but I want to be able to pick up my rib without it falling off and on to my plate. I am not a huge pulled pork fan in general but there's was solid. No complaints. I was actually impressed with the sides too. As much flavor as the meat provided the sides were a nice touch. The lemon poppy slaw was bright and fresh and on its own on the mild side but perfect with the bbq. The potato salad was surprisingly delicious. It packed flavor, crunch and texture and paired beautifully with the bbq meats. The Mac and cheese was simple but good. And the kale Cesar salad packed a big punch of Cesar dressing. The corn soufflé was surprisingly better than I anticipated. Not pictured but we also did order dessert. The banana pudding was excellent. Not overly sweet and a great ratio of pudding to wafers. I like my banana pudding with wafers and I was happy to see they didn't skimp on those. The peach cobbler is made with a cake base and this dessert was not sweet either. The sweetness came from the peaches and it was really a fantastic way to end such a heavy meal. Overall, there is no doubt that this bbq is the best I have had since living here. And when I want bbq, we will definitely come back. I was hesitant about pricing before coming but you get a good value for what you get. The staff is friendly and service was great. I waited excitedly while the smell of smoke wafted through the air as I stood my place line with a group hipster doofus food connoisseurs. We all were plotting our Q order but some people just ask way to many questions . Being a BBQ snob it was hilarious watching this crowd all study the menu for the perfect meal. BBQ scientists created ensemble of meats smoked to perfection and sides to accompany the smoked flesh for me to choose from today, including 3 specials. It's my turn in line and I share my order with the lady whom then signals THE MAN WITH THE MEAT! The Meat Master begins carving up mountains of flesh for my consumption. With a precision blade he was like a Jedi Master carving meat up. He really gave me the impression he knew what he was doing. Plate full and off to my table. My order was BEEF CHEEKS and this was an amazing piece of beef. Not a tough piece at all, it melted in my mouth. You could taste the smoke and fat of this succulent flesh with every bit. NO BBQ SAUCE NEEDED!!!! Highly recommend trying a pound of the beef cheeks, it's worthy of its price. Also I grabbed a link of sausage and it tasted like a Texas smoked sausage should taste, YUMMY! The poppyseed slaw made me wonder if I made a solid choice and the answer was YES IT DID! Some of the best slaw I've enjoyed in the city of Seattle. The slaw really tied the meal together in case you wondered. Outsider BBQ gets the Wayne's World chant " WERE NOT WORTHY " cause it's just damn good BBQ. This is the type of meal you'd get in Austin , Texas and not Seattle. Thanks for bringing your smoking expertise to Seattle and I'm coming back real soon for a BBQ BEEF rib! Sides are sold individually and portioned for sharing (or big appetites), so it can get pricey. The corn casserole was the unexpected standout -- rich and flavorful. On the flip side, the mac n cheese was a letdown: bland and forgettable. I wouldn't recommend unless for small children. Most of it was melt-in-your-mouth tender, though a few leaner edges were slightly on the dry side. The seasoning hit all the right notes - salty, peppery, and balanced enough. Easily some of the best brisket I've had in recent memory. Pulled Pork ($30/lb) Unfortunately, this was a total miss. Bland, dry, and lacking that rich porkiness or smoky depth you'd expect. None of us enjoyed it - felt like a batch that just missed the mark from the start, bleh. Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage ($9/each) A standout. It was savory, the snap on the casing was satisfying, and the cheese inside was hot and gooey - but yes, it was unapologetically greasy. You'll need napkins. This place lives up to the name. I'm from the south and was doubtful about Seattle BBQ, but this might be better than home. You pay by the weight for whichever meat you want, could be a slice or half a pound. Their sides were all amazing, only thing they're missing is some baked beans with meat in it. I want to preface that I went to Outsider BBQ on two consecutive weeks. The first time was on a Thursday evening with my partner, and we ordered online for takeaway. The second time my friend and I went on a Friday night and dine there. For the Thursday evening meal, we ordered a half pound of the brisket, a half pound of the beef cheeks, lemon poppy slaw and mac and cheese for takeaway. The beef cheeks were so tender and delicious. We were surprised at the lightness of the slaw and how the citrus of the lemon helped cut the richness of the meat. For me, the mac and cheese was bland. The highlight of the evening was the brisket! It was smoked perfectly, and each slice was tender and mouthwatering delicious with lots of flavor. On my second trip, I took my friend on a Friday night around 6:30 and the place was packed. The atmosphere was lively and people were having a good time! There was a long line on a Friday night to place our order, but everyone was friendly and patient. The staff were polite and they worked quickly to fulfill the orders! We ordered a half pound of the brisket, the lemon poppy slaw, the kale Caesar salad and a half pound of the pork ribs. We topped it off with two Hefeweizen beers! After we got our food, a party at the next table raved about the brisket and shared how good it was! The brisket was perfectly smoked, tender and mouthwatering delicious again! We got two pork ribs and they were tender and had just the right amount of barbecue sauce. It was very tasty! The lemon poppy slaw again was very refreshing. We thought The kale Caesar tasted pretty good, too. I've already told my friends and out-of-town friends about Outsider BBQ! Hands down the best bbq I've had in recent memory. The brisket and jalepeno cheddar sausage are a must-have, and the street corn and corn casserole were also amazing. Not sure I have room for dessert, but I really want to try the banana pudding. 10/10, would absolutely pay them a visit. read more

As a true blue Texan who was feeling a little homesick, I was excited to try out this new BBQ spot. Unfortunately, Outsider BBQ & Beer Garden was an absolute disappointment. I ordered a meal for pick up. The serving size at this price point is highway robbery. While the brisket I had was moist and had a wonderful texture, the seasoning on the bark had absolutely no dimension. The only flavor present was overwhelming black pepper. The sole pork rib I had was not tender and again appeared to only be seasoned with black pepper. I also had the mac n' cheese, which was creamy, but the only flavor note that came through was black pepper. The corn casserole had the correct texture (something I've never experienced while living in Washington state) but was nothing to write home about. The banana pudding was way too chunky with barely any Nilla Wafers used. Furthermore, the pickled onions, pickles, and jalapeños that accompanied my order were super bitter, almost as if they had only been soaked in vinegar, not a proper brine. The only high note of this meal was the Carolina-inspired mustard based BBQ sauce. To reference Texas BBQ influence in relation to what was served is absolutely blasphemous. There is no way that the technique used at this establishment was honed alongside a seasoned pitmaster. I would not recommend this restaurant to friends, family, or even my worst enemy. read more
