I'm happy to learn of cocoa cinnamon's history linking it toDurham and its success so far. I've been to three locations so far, but I do love the decor here more than the others despite the limited space. Pros: good old hot chocolate and mugs that I've come to expect from Cocoa Cinnamon. It is a bit pricey but I'm always so happy at the end of it I don't feel as bad as spending $4 on a Starbucks coffee. Quiet area. The decor an ambience Good service although as always it would help if they tried to pronounce names correctly. Cons: The wall sockets are very limited. It helps if you have a long cord or manage to snag one of the few tables with a socket nearby. The parking is limited but not unreasonable. I haven't been in months and I can't stop thinking about their churros. Which means it's probably time to go back!! I also love their Dr. Durham latte. I get it iced because I drink iced all year long. Even when it's winter and snowing and not iced coffee weather. But it's summer now and no one will side eye me or think it's strange I'm drinking coffee now since it's 100 degrees outside, so it's time for me to make the trek out there even tho it is not the closest coffee shop to me. Their second location in Durham. I love coming to this place where I can read a book and sip on some coffee. Parking can be tricky but if you are lucky, you can find parking in the back. If not, you can find parking on the road. It's a cute space with tables for you to study. They have pastries, good coffee, and merchandise. There is also outside seating but when it's cold, rainy, or snowy, the inside can get quite crowded. Anyway, it's a great place for coffee and a way to get some work done. read more

I came here last week because I drive by it at least once a week on my way to 9th street and the dreary drizzly day was perfect for grabbing some coffee/tea. The parking lot is quite small and filled up quickly so I parked on the street nearby. I was so pleased to discover that Cocoa Cinnamon sells Guglhupf's pastries and got a croissant, cherry Danish, and berry scone to go. The interior is definitely eclectic and hipster to the max with lots of people reading/studying/using their laptops while sipping coffee along the unique wall decor/benches and side tables. There was no line when I arrived and my drink arrived very quickly at the counter. The waiter was kind enough to explain to me the different menu options because there is sipping chocolate, and regular chocolate, and coffee, and tea, and lattes. So many options! The sipping chocolate sounded very rich and decadent as it is concentrated melted chocolate and comes in a small cup, but I was looking for something a little lighter that day. I ended up trying a matcha (green tea) latte with honey, to go. It was perfectly foamy on top, creamy, with notes of the green tea permeating throughout the latte. Everything that a tea latte should be. Next time I'm coming back to try the chai tea latte and the sipping chocolate! read more

They make a decent cup of coffee, but it's not anything extraordinary for the prices they charge. On top of that, they charge an automatic 20% gratuity that is not made apparent upfront. Cocoa Cinnamon pretty much summarizes this sweet yet spicy cafe. It's unique Mexican influences gives it seasonal specials that are sure to satisfy almost any beverage craving. By far one of my favorite coffee stops in Durham. The lattes have just as much art as the exotic tables, and the atmosphere makes for a great hangout with friends/colleagues/study groups. Came for a morning meeting. When the weather is nice the out door seating is very pleasant. The employees were helpful as this was my first time and I had a couple of questions. I'm working on decreasing my caffeine intake and they had multiple great tea options. I got an iced version of the rooibos lavender tea. It was very refreshing to enjoy on their patio. There's not much seating so this location as one of the smaller locations can get busy. My only problem was parking I had to drive around twice to find parking about a block away. There are sidewalks so it is easy to park and walk since the parking lot is small. read more

Amazing space It may even better then the original as far as layout and atmosphere. This new spot is right next door to Mesa Latin Kitchen and has a great outdoor patio with garage doors and some seating inside. I ordered a coconut milk iced latte and grabbed a seat outdoors. The space and the people are awesome. I already know I like their coffee drinks however this visit was not my favorite. I assume their coconut milk is sweetened because it was super sweet and tasted funky. They don't have almond milk either which is kind of a bummer. They definitely have a larger selection of baked goods then the other location. There is a small parking lot behind the building and street parking available. I found it a little tough to find parking nearby but since they just opened I know everyone wants to check out this beautiful space. Happy to see Cocoa Cinnamon's success in the Durham area and this new location is worth a visit. read more

Cocoa Cinnamon is a cute and cozy coffee shop. But they are not an ordinary coffee shop, because they have THE best hot chocolate (even if it is a little pricey). So for those who are not big coffee drinkers, they have a unique and delicious selection of hot chocolates for you to indulge yourself. They make the experience even more unique by allowing you to choose different spices to add to your drink. During my most recent visit I tried a dark chocolate base and added the Tenochtitlan spice which is made with cayenne, vanilla powder and agave. It was sooo delicious! It added quite a kick to the hot chocolate. So if spice and spicy are not your thing, then I'd stay away from this one. But I loved it! They also have a great selection of baked goods from local Durham bakeries if you need a snack to go along with your drink. While it is not a very big place, there are some tables and seats for you to work or socialize. But it might be hard to find a place for a big group depending on how busy they are. Overall, it is definitely worth a try if you want some unique drinks or some great quality coffee. read more

I love Cocoa Cinnamon, always have. My rating is just compared to the other locations they have. I liked this one the least. They still have great coffee and teas (and WIFI)!! This location is brightly lit but there are not enough seats. I feel like that is a common theme for Cocoa Cinnamon. This location has benches but very small side tables(?) these tables are enough for you and your friend to set two cups down and chit chat. I wanna say half of the seats are like this inside. The other half similar to community table set up and you can use it as a studying/work area. I would still go back since I love this local coffee shop. read more

Blackberry lime pie - 2.5 stars Disappointing. Perhaps it's because it's been left out (3pm on a Sunday) so the crust was soft and not flaky, but it wasn't sweet either. There was minimal filling and the filling was rather flavorless. It's making me reconsider visiting the East Durham Bakeshop. Lemon loaf - 4 stars The surprising winner of the two. It was nice and bright (compared to say a banana loaf or pumpkin loaf) and not too sweet! Tasted like a butter cake. =================================== Totoro latte - 3.5 stars Got it without honey or vanilla and it's bitter, which made me appreciate that they don't use a powder with added sugar, but also implies the quality of matcha isn't the best. The froth wasn't thick and stable though - it had too many large air bubbles. =================================== Dr Durham with soy - 3.5 stars Basically tasted like iced coffee. Stir well - I got a shot of ground ginger nearing the bottom. Would just get a regular latte or try the matcha the next time round. read more

Pros: - If you love supporting local stores, this is great! - It's quiet enough inside to do work and read a book if you want! - The coffee is relatively well priced. - The pastries looked delicious! I went to the Cocoa Cinnamon location off of Geer Street once, and really liked the coffee, but found the space to be cramped and maybe a little too "hipster" even for me. I finally made it to the second location located on Hillsborough Road near Ninth Street and I had a better overall experience than my first Cocoa Cinnamon excursion. I had the Al Mokha (not to be confused with Al Roker) Latte which consists of cocoa and cinnamon along with the usual latte ingredients. Wow, what a concept! Also a great Latte. Much less sweet than what you would get at a say, Starbucks (and better). I also had a pastry from Guglhupf, and you can never go wrong with a pastry from Guglhupf. A few minor issues I have with this location are 1) Parking is an issue, as with a lot of Durham establishments 2) Unless I just missed it, I didn't see a whole lot of areas to plug in so staying a while to do work or study with a computer appears to be problematic. (I wish coffee shops were like Libraries with outlets everywhere). Cocoa Cinnamon number two offers a relaxed atmosphere and great coffee and I am sure I will be returning soon! read more

This was a nice stop to kill a few minutes as we were waiting for our escape game to start nearby. They serve 4th dimensions coffee and my wife and I got a latte and cortado. My brother in law and sister in law each got tea and and chai tea latte. They both said they enjoyed theirs. The space is clean and a eclectic and there is plenty of seating. The baristas weren't snobby but not friendly either. The cortado I had was a bit hot but once it cooled a bit was tasty. Overall a good experience. read more

Yesterday was my first time at the Hillsborough location, but this spot has all the same problems as the old location... just with less comfy seating options. My biggest problem with Cocoa Cinnamon is the service. The job of a barista, above all, is customer service. I've been a barista myself, and I know everyone has an off day and shouldn't be required to smile and be perky 24/7. But the folks who work at Cocoa Cinnamon act like they're doing us a favor by even acknowledging our existence. I tried making small talk with the guy taking my order and he gave me a bored, one word answer. So I tried again; same response. At this point I was annoyed, but then something irked me even more. I got my iced slow brew in a tall, slim glass and went to add sugar and cinnamon to it... And the shakers were literally wider than the mouth of the glass. There was no way to add either to my coffee without making a mess. Someone clearly didn't plan this well. Yes their coffee is expensive and there are tons of other great coffee shops in Durham where you can get good coffee for cheaper. Cocoa Cinnamon's target demographic is the gentrifying white circle jerk type that is becoming a real problem in Durham. Get over yourself, we get it you support gay marriage. read more

I've loved CC in the past and this is my first experience at this new location. It has a cool atmosphere with more outdoor seating. You can find people studying, working, or chatting. They have stopped taking punch cards. Their cups are tiny. They don't serve drip coffee after 3 pm?! There's never any good seating due to the people who camp out for an entire day (after spending $6 for a latte, I guess who can blame them?!). I've been overcharged for pastry items because the barista can't find the correct item on the list and I guess they can't be bothered to scroll (this has happened multiple times). Really disappointed in the service on Sunday. I saw them scold a woman who brought her dog in the establishment who was a service dog with all of the proper identification. It was extremely aggressive and in front of all of the other customers - forcing the woman to have to defend herself. They messed up the order of a ice latte by making a hot latte - (that is ok! mistakes happen!) but the gentleman handled it by just adding ice to the hot beverage which immediately melted, thus it was super watery and still warm. read more

Although this place is amazing I took one star away for the lack of comfy chairs here -- I could sit here all day and study but they need cushions on their benches and chairs to make it easier to crack down and study! This location has some of the coolest artwork displayed all over the shop. I loved just absorbing all the energy from the walls and from the people! I love their outdoor space as well, but it is usually always crowded and hard to find tables to work on. I'm a bit confused. I read great things about this coffee shop and was excited to try something unique. I ordered the Dr. Durham and it tasted like milk and espresso.... no flavor whatsoever. Off day? If I was ordering a non flavored latte I'd say it was good. But since it had no flavor, no sure I'd go out of my way in the future. My partner's drink was the same... no flavor.
