Normally a great coffee shop with wonderful drinks, but this morning I ordered two chai lattes, one dirty and they were both absolutely disgusting. I basically had 2 cups of iced milk with minimal other flavor; I ended up pouring both out. Being from California I'm not familiar with the 4th Dimension coffees, however, they're full bodied and have a distinct nuttiness to them..assuming that was the brand used to make my latte. The sipping chocolate is a staple and one of the best taste experiences you can have if you've never tried it; be sure to ask one of the fantastic barristas for help with your order to attain maximum taste awesomeness. There are not a ton of coffee shops and cafes in the area, and this place definitely makes some VERY tasty coffee drinks! It is not a cheap place to grab coffee, but really these days, any trendy coffee spot is going to set you back more than you plan ha ha This location (they just opened a second one which I haven't been to yet), does not have the biggest interior for seat selections. I am a person who likes to do work for a bit at a coffee shop, but if you want to sit inside, definitely don't come here during peak hours, since it can be a little tricky. There is a large nice outdoor patio though. So if it isn't hot and sweaty and humid out, this is definitely a great place to do a little work or meet up with friends and whatnot. A very laid back vibe here, the coffee drinks can take a little while to make, but they are all so inventive it is clear that a lot of thought goes into them! And their attention to chocolate is just amazing, for any chocolate lovers out there. They were at the Science of Wine event recently and their hot chocolate samples are just so rich and silky and tasty. Cocoa Cinnamon fits right in in the Do-it yourself district here in Durham. It's a cute place and is PACKED everytime I go in, which is curiously always during working hours. Seems like THE spot in this part of downtown for hipsters and others who want to read/study/work outside the home. Despite the drinks being a little slow, I will say that they serve the best hot chocolate I have ever had. I ordered the milk chocolate version--imagine fancy Swiss or German chocolate turned into hot chocolate, and that is what you get. Also, their handmade mugs are beautiful. My favorite place in Durham. The coffee is delicious and the pastries are tasty, but that's not even what's so great about it. The furniture is homey, you can sit on a funky couch or outside at a wooden picnic table. And while it's often crowded, everyone is so nice and comfortable around each other, whether it's quietly working on their laptops, or having a nice conversation with friends, or pointing at the ceiling fans with their toddler. "Community coffee" is available for those who can't afford full price for a drink, and I love being able to support that with a couple extra bucks with my purchase. read more

I had the best damn hot chocolate I ever tasted, made with 70% gran saman dark chocolate. Husband had a hand poured Kenyan also great. Only problem is that this place was choc full of hipsters in the middle of a weekday afternoon, so no seats to be had. Well, the coffee is excellent. Ok, the coffee is really delicious. The See-Line Woman, in particular, was a high point to the time I spent there while trying to work on my literature review. The staff is lovely, and the drinks are surprisingly reasonable - under $5 for a fairly intense latte / espresso. However, the space is very small, but there's plenty of outdoor seating. Outdoor seating is great, if it isn't 18 degrees outside. So, at 1015, I juuuuuuust barely snagged a spot to settle in and get some work done. The dude next to me was not thrilled about me getting my laptop out and squeezing in the corner as he has three law reviews and cups strewn about. (This isn't your apartment buddy, learn to share) I got the feeling there were a lot of people there who really just needed the free internet (lots of audible youtube cat videos going on) as opposed who wanted to use the space to get things done. Cocoa Cinnamon has some of the best coffees, teas and cocoa drinks in the triangle, if not the best. The patio is large and it is so nice to hang out there any time of the year . The staff is very friendly, welcoming and helping. It can get very crowded but I guess that is because they do something right! Very nice café in Durham. I wanted to try it since a lot of time and finally got the chance when sketching group decided to meet there. Love the ambiance, a lot of personality and diverse population. I was visiting Durham for work and decided to stay there for the weekend. I looked around for a nice coffee shop where I could do some work (which is very normal here in the Bay Area) but I couldn't find any in downtown Durham. A coworker told me to check out Cocoa Cinnamon and so I did. I loved the couches and the cozy atmosphere inside the store. It was too cold for me to sit outside (Californian here), and the line was oh my god too long but I decided it was too late to back out. I see the giant menus they have and I try to make my drink decision but there is so much to choose from and I didn't want to hold the line so I make up my mind and decide to try the Al Mokha. The nice lady behind the counter *(from Tijuana! Yeah paisana como estas!?!) helped me order and chatted with me while processing my payment. Now, it was time to try to find a seat (it took a while, the place was crowded). There is probably three times the sitting outside compared to what they have inside, but again, too cold for me; so I decide to stare at a guy who packed all his stuff and was getting ready to leave but was just his phone until he realized that people were waiting for him to move and I jumped and took his seat (All of those years studying at FSM in the Berkeley campus are paying off). Internet was fast. The drink was delicious. The service was fantastic. I will go back again. read more

I have been eyeing this place for a looong time. The main reason is because they carry Triangle Raw Foods. Also, a coffee shop that sells Counter Culture Coffee? Uhm, yes please! I also loved and appreciated their laminated menus in front of the cash register because everyone knows how awkward it can be to look up at a menu board deciding what to order without any description while people are waiting behind you. Yes, I am glad to say I enjoyed browsing through a menu in my hand off to the side. This time around, I did not get coffee. However, the teas got my attention and I tried this chamomile tea that had a couple of other pretty words as its title. (Ex: Arabian Golden Something Chamomile) They have plenty of seating inside with chairs and couches and tables & even a small bar-like nook! But it's the summertime, and the outdoor picnic tables are just gorgeous in the evening with all the string lights. FYI: If you want the full experience of their pastries/desserts, just make note that by evening time, a lot of the good stuff will probably be gone. Man. Den of disease. A barista was super sick. She literally was holding an ice pack on her forehead, cradling her head in her hands, and holding herself up by leaning against the counter. She was complaining to her coworkers about having a fever and feeling super sick. They said, "oh, you probably have a sinus infection, just go to the doctor tomorrow." I spoke up and said, "hey, if you're that sick, you need to go to the doctor now." "Nah, she'll go tomorrow when the school clinic is open." SERIOUSLY? YOU ARE A VECTOR FOR WHATEVER SICKNESS YOU HAVE. And none of y'all see this as a problem? If I lived in Durham I would come here every day. No joke. This place is a coffee lover's dream. Each coffee drink is carefully crafted, no detail too small or overlooked. I was a bit overwhelmed at first by the variety and unique combinations, but I settled on the Moctezuma. I'm not really sure of all the different spices- cardamon and cayenne maybe? I ran a marathon earlier that day so I was a bit drained mentally and physically. Well, I first noticed how smooth the coffee tasted. It was like velvet in a cup. Is the coffee inexpensive? No, but the amount of work to create each beverage and the quality of the actual coffee is well worth the price. The physical space was quirky yet totally charming with the mismatched furniture. Even though the indoor space is on the smaller side there's plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy your beverage. It seems like a great neighborhood spot (dog friendly too!) where you had a mix of young families, couples and of course, the laptop mafia claiming the best seats. Unfortunately, my local host and I were strapped on time so took our drinks to go. I hope I can visit Durham soon so I can make another visit to Cocoa Cinnamon! read more

Cute place, but it always leaves me wanting more... I feel like there's always been massive gaps in room for improvement. They try really hard, which is awesome, and their coffee is tasty, but their pastry selection is never appealing, and their service is soooo unbearably slow sometimes. I also am often turned off by their upholstered furniture, since it often has stains left from various food items (I saw a jam stain on a couch one day. Or what I hope was a jam stain?). I think it's a good place to work (aside from their often totally crazy music selection), but I never seek it out or crave it. I can definitely find better (& faster) coffee in Durham. read more

My pick is the drinking chocolate, which is a chocolate bar melted with half and half. With so many great reviews, I almost feel bad about doing this. I am a native of Durham so i have watched it decline and then revitalized over the past few decades. It's a pleasure to have all these new dining experiences, however I didn't like Cocoa &Cinnamon. We ordered parliament sipping chocolate, coconut danish and an apple pastry. They were all tasty but i was dissapionted with the small and luke warm sipper. My danish was cold in the center. It is challenging to dine in sunken sofas and with no place to set my cup so I can use both hands to eat. I was uncomfortable. This is not my style of dining or to have a cup of coffee with friends.
