Coconuts is a Florida staple and I finally got to give it a try Friday night. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated and got a great table outside on the lower dock, near the water. Service was terrific, our waitress was super kind, knowledgeable about the menu and weekly specials, and quick. It's chill vibes, you feel like everyone is there to have enjoy the outdoors and some good food. We got the scoobies to start of course, which you should most definitely get. It was in a flavorful yet simple melted butter. Each crab claw had a ton of meat on them which I was happily surprised about. I got 3 oysters (I forgot from where) which were fresh and delicious, I could've ordered a dozen of them but didn't want to fill myself up before my main entree arrived: smoked trout toast. Although I've had smoked trout before, this unlike anything I've tasted. It was one of their weekly specials and special it was! The smoked trout was delicious and tender; you could really taste the smokiness. It was packed with flavors of dill and mustard seeds and it all combined together wonderfully. Beautiful location and view. I got the grilled salmon and although it was a tad overcooked, it was still great with the tomato relish. Unfortunately, the Mac and cheese fell flat which is disappointing because it was an upcharge. Jose was such an amazing bartender and made my experience great! Coconuts was a top must try on my list during my visit to Fort Lauderdale so I stopped by during brunch on Sunday and there wasn't a wait at all. I ended up sitting at the bar and met some really cool people. I ended up ordering the seafood frittata for my entrée and potato cake cakes as an appetizer. The frittata was huge and loaded full of crab, lobster and shrimp. I would've given the place five stars, but the lobster was definitely overcooked. It was very tough but the crab and shrimp were seasoned to perfection. My Mojito was fabulous and I love potatoes so the potato cakes were a hit too. The restaurant is basically open air and with the Florida heat it can give a little hot. They do have fans and there was a nice breeze in the bar area so I was able to stay cool for the most part. My wife and I came here years ago and had one of those meals that sticks with you. Great food, killer atmosphere, one of those "we have to come back here" nights. Only problem? We completely forgot the name. For years, this place became our own personal Fort Lauderdale urban legend. We kept telling ourselves it was tucked down some side street away from the beach, hidden like a seafood speakeasy. Meanwhile every map kept insisting it was "at the beach," when what we were really remembering was this perfect spot sitting right on the Intracoastal with a view that makes you want to cancel the rest of your day. Well, mystery solved, and the return visit absolutely delivered. The view is flat-out magnificent. Boats cruising by, water sparkling, that laid-back South Florida energy where nobody should be in a hurry, especially the bar, which occasionally moves at the speed of a manatee on vacation. Honestly, it kind of adds to the charm. We started with the conch and shrimp fritters, and this is where the comedy began. The texture? Perfect. The flavor? Spot on. The actual conch and shrimp? Possibly still out in the ocean somewhere. Delicious fritters, but let's just say the seafood was working remotely. The sausage served with them, though, absolutely understood the assignment. The spinach and artichoke dip was excellent, rich, hot, and exactly the kind of appetizer that makes you accidentally ruin your appetite and not care. My fried snapper sandwich was the star of the table. Absolutely fantastic. Tender fish, fried perfectly, with a crust seasoned so well it felt like somebody in that kitchen actually loves food. Every bite hit. This is the kind of sandwich that makes conversation stop. The fish tacos, unfortunately, didn't get the same memo. Overcooked, underseasoned, and just kind of there. Not offensive, just forgettable, which in a place this memorable stands out even more. The burger, I'm told, was perfect. The tuna burger, on the other hand, got hit with what sounded like topping overload, to the point where the tuna itself got lost in the shuffle. If tuna is the headliner, let it sing. Now let's talk dessert, because this is the part that deserves its own standing ovation. The key lime pie is in a class by itself. Pro tip: save room. Seriously. This isn't one of those key lime pies that punches you in the face with fake tartness. It's balanced, subtle, fresh, and ridiculously good. The kind of dessert that makes everyone at the table suddenly become "just one bite" thieves. Pair that with a very well-made espresso martini, and suddenly all flaws are forgiven. Service was excellent throughout, and the whole experience reminded us exactly why this place haunted our memory for years. Four stars because a few dishes missed the boat, literally and figuratively, but I'd absolutely recommend it. Go for the fried snapper, the stronger appetizers, the mac and cheese, and above all else, that key lime pie. Some restaurants are worth finding once. In Ft. Lauderdale for the Tortuga Music Festival, Coconuts Fort Lauderdale was suggested as THE place to go for dinner. Upon arrival to the restaurant, we were told there was a 1.5 hour wait (at 8:40pm) before we would even be seated. With nothing else planned, we went ahead and agreed. While we waited, we went to the outside bar and grabbed a drink! Make sure you order a BE NICE PUNCH!!! Luckily, the wait wasn't quite as long as predicted! Once seated, our waiter, German, was on top of game! He NEVER missed a beat, all night! My coconut shrimp platter was delivered with honey mustard dipping sauce. I'd never had it that way, but it was pretty good! My husband said the Mahi and crab plate was amazing, as well. He ordered a slice of key lime pie on recommendation from the waiter. I'd hold back on that.... It was $12 per slice & he didn't even share The food was really good, but not $99.33 good. Same for the drinks at the bar that were an additional $45. The environment was great with beautiful views of the Intercoastal waterway. The staff was amazing, as well! My only complaint would be that an 18% gratuity was included (seemingly) on every check, not just large parties! There is valet parking, and it fills up fast. We were very excited to try everything on the menu. The restaurant itself is very seafood focused. They have oysters, and all types of fish. Pretty nice seafood place with a waterfront view. It feels like a fancy seafood dinner because of the view, but the setup is more fast, eat-and-go. I wanted to sit by the water, and they said there would be sun, but it was extremely hot--even in January. It would be much more comfortable with fans or some kind of cooling system. The restaurant is known for something called "Scoobies" which per Google Gemini are "crab claws (traditionally blue crab or snow crab) that have been partially de-shelled--leaving just the "pincher" as a handle--and sautéed in a rich sauce of garlic, butter, and olive oil with crushed red pepper and scallions." I didn't get the Scoobies because I was apprehensive about how difficult they would be to eat. My dishes were fried oysters, fish tacos, and coconut shrimp platter. They were all fine, but unremarkable. The platter comes with fries and cole slaw as listed, but when I said to the bartender that I didn't need cole slaw, just extra fries, he offered/clarified that I could substitute another side instead, so I went with broccoli. I did notice that there were many flies flying around when my shrimp platter came out. One of the other bartenders put out a plate of hot sauce to repel the flies, which helped. The place is famous and sells its own merchandise like shirts and hats. It is not located near other restaurants, and you'll have to walk fifteen minutes or get an Uber if you are discouraged by the waiting time. This place does NOT slow down, so arrive early and get your name on the list. I think we started in the 20s on the list and waited a half hour to be seated. My husband said the most he saw was 46. Despite the long line, you might think servers would want you in and kick you out, but they don't. We waited in the deck bar which is cute and everyone was sharing tables and seats. When we got in, we ordered drinks and our waiter talked us through the menu - telling us the "Market Price" prices, some of his favorite dishes, and restaurant signatures. This was my first visit to Coconuts in some time and it was still as good as ever! I really wish they took reservations but also understand the nature of their business not to. We arrived for an early dinner and decided to wait at the waterfront bar outside. The margaritas at the dock bar were VERY expensive but I get that they also cater to tourists so this is probably normal. The wait wasn't too long and we ended up getting a seat inside. We ordered the usual fare - scoobies, oysters, and their fish special for the day. Their wait staff is always 10/10 so never any complaint there. I will say, we ordered a coconut shrimp appetizer that we and the waitress both forgot about until the bill came. They were so nice about it and took it off the bill but decided to give us the order to-go anyway. Always keeping up with the "BE NICE" motto.
