In Ft. Lauderdale for the Tortuga Music Festival, Coconuts Fort Lauderdale was suggested as THE place to go for dinner. Upon arrival to the restaurant, we were told there was a 1.5 hour wait (at 8:40pm) before we would even be seated. With nothing else planned, we went ahead and agreed. While we waited, we went to the outside bar and grabbed a drink! Make sure you order a BE NICE PUNCH!!! Luckily, the wait wasn't quite as long as predicted! Once seated, our waiter, German, was on top of game! He NEVER missed a beat, all night! My coconut shrimp platter was delivered with honey mustard dipping sauce. I'd never had it that way, but it was pretty good! My husband said the Mahi and crab plate was amazing, as well. He ordered a slice of key lime pie on recommendation from the waiter. I'd hold back on that.... It was $12 per slice & he didn't even share The food was really good, but not $99.33 good. Same for the drinks at the bar that were an additional $45. The environment was great with beautiful views of the Intercoastal waterway. The staff was amazing, as well! My only complaint would be that an 18% gratuity was included (seemingly) on every check, not just large parties! We obviously had to start with the famous scoobies, which are their little crab claws drowned in butter and garlic and served with small toasts. MUST GET. My wife and I came here years ago and had one of those meals that sticks with you. Great food, killer atmosphere, one of those "we have to come back here" nights. Only problem? We completely forgot the name. For years, this place became our own personal Fort Lauderdale urban legend. We kept telling ourselves it was tucked down some side street away from the beach, hidden like a seafood speakeasy. Meanwhile every map kept insisting it was "at the beach," when what we were really remembering was this perfect spot sitting right on the Intracoastal with a view that makes you want to cancel the rest of your day. Well, mystery solved, and the return visit absolutely delivered. The view is flat-out magnificent. Boats cruising by, water sparkling, that laid-back South Florida energy where nobody should be in a hurry, especially the bar, which occasionally moves at the speed of a manatee on vacation. Honestly, it kind of adds to the charm. We started with the conch and shrimp fritters, and this is where the comedy began. The texture? Perfect. The flavor? Spot on. The actual conch and shrimp? Possibly still out in the ocean somewhere. Delicious fritters, but let's just say the seafood was working remotely. The sausage served with them, though, absolutely understood the assignment. The spinach and artichoke dip was excellent, rich, hot, and exactly the kind of appetizer that makes you accidentally ruin your appetite and not care. My fried snapper sandwich was the star of the table. Absolutely fantastic. Tender fish, fried perfectly, with a crust seasoned so well it felt like somebody in that kitchen actually loves food. Every bite hit. This is the kind of sandwich that makes conversation stop. The fish tacos, unfortunately, didn't get the same memo. Overcooked, underseasoned, and just kind of there. Not offensive, just forgettable, which in a place this memorable stands out even more. The burger, I'm told, was perfect. The tuna burger, on the other hand, got hit with what sounded like topping overload, to the point where the tuna itself got lost in the shuffle. If tuna is the headliner, let it sing. Now let's talk dessert, because this is the part that deserves its own standing ovation. The key lime pie is in a class by itself. Pro tip: save room. Seriously. This isn't one of those key lime pies that punches you in the face with fake tartness. It's balanced, subtle, fresh, and ridiculously good. The kind of dessert that makes everyone at the table suddenly become "just one bite" thieves. Pair that with a very well-made espresso martini, and suddenly all flaws are forgiven. Service was excellent throughout, and the whole experience reminded us exactly why this place haunted our memory for years. Four stars because a few dishes missed the boat, literally and figuratively, but I'd absolutely recommend it. Go for the fried snapper, the stronger appetizers, the mac and cheese, and above all else, that key lime pie. Some restaurants are worth finding once. I don't think they take reservations, but there is a bunch of space outside where you can wait, have a drink. Enjoy watching the water etc. The Coconut shrimp was amazing as were the fries. The Fritter appetizer was great, same with the oysters, pretty much everything was phenomenal. My only suggestion is don't overdo it especially if you're visiting and have a hotel that does not have a way to reheat your food later. Quality fresh seafood and shellfish; friendly helpful, service; decent prices; creative cocktails and a large wine list; great views of beautiful boats and reasonable valet parking (at least on a weekday for lunch). Fish tacos were flavorful and the jerk chicken wings had a great grilled flavor while being moist (but not AT ALL spicy, a disappointment and misuse of the word Jerk). And those scoobies are addictive if not a little pricey. As were the oysters which were varied but a bit high $ per piece so we skipped them. The restaurant is known for something called "Scoobies" which per Google Gemini are "crab claws (traditionally blue crab or snow crab) that have been partially de-shelled--leaving just the "pincher" as a handle--and sautéed in a rich sauce of garlic, butter, and olive oil with crushed red pepper and scallions." I didn't get the Scoobies because I was apprehensive about how difficult they would be to eat. My dishes were fried oysters, fish tacos, and coconut shrimp platter. They were all fine, but unremarkable. The platter comes with fries and cole slaw as listed, but when I said to the bartender that I didn't need cole slaw, just extra fries, he offered/clarified that I could substitute another side instead, so I went with broccoli. I did notice that there were many flies flying around when my shrimp platter came out. One of the other bartenders put out a plate of hot sauce to repel the flies, which helped. The place is famous and sells its own merchandise like shirts and hats. It is not located near other restaurants, and you'll have to walk fifteen minutes or get an Uber if you are discouraged by the waiting time. There is valet parking, and it fills up fast. We were very excited to try everything on the menu. The restaurant itself is very seafood focused. They have oysters, and all types of fish. It a relatively casual ambiance, but the atmosphere is lively and upbeat. I think this would be a great place for a small group of friends to get together and hangout. The food itself is fine. I wanted to sit by the water, and they said there would be sun, but it was extremely hot--even in January. It would be much more comfortable with fans or some kind of cooling system. It's a perfect place to stop after the beach, but I wouldn't come here for dinner. The view is amazing, and again, with fans it would be much more enjoyable. I used to really like Coconuts and have gone there many times over the years when visiting Fort Lauderdale, but after my last experience, I won't be back. I specifically called ahead on a Sunday to ask if I could come in and order the Comfort Bowl to go, since I had previously been told it wasn't available during brunch. The person on the phone put me on hold, checked, and told me I should have no problem ordering it. I even double checked again with her because I had been denied this exact situation before. So I walked about a mile in the heat, arrived drenched in sweat, sat at the bar, and was immediately told they could not make it because they were serving brunch. The manager came over, confirmed they would not make it, and seemed completely indifferent that I had just called and been told the opposite. Bottom like, they don't care if they told you the wrong information and wasted your time. Mistakes happen, but wasting someone's time after they specifically called ahead and double-checked is unacceptable. After years of spending money here and recommending this place to others, I'm done. I won't be returning, and I highly recommend you don't waste your time, it's not worth it. read more

This was my first visit to Coconuts in some time and it was still as good as ever! I really wish they took reservations but also understand the nature of their business not to. We arrived for an early dinner and decided to wait at the waterfront bar outside. The margaritas at the dock bar were VERY expensive but I get that they also cater to tourists so this is probably normal. The wait wasn't too long and we ended up getting a seat inside. We ordered the usual fare - scoobies, oysters, and their fish special for the day. Their wait staff is always 10/10 so never any complaint there. I will say, we ordered a coconut shrimp appetizer that we and the waitress both forgot about until the bill came. They were so nice about it and took it off the bill but decided to give us the order to-go anyway. Always keeping up with the "BE NICE" motto. Wow!!! I did not expect this place to be so good. We got on the waiting list as they do not take reservations. We walked around the area for about 30 minutes till our place in line was only 3 tables ahead of us and got back to the restaurant in time to be seated in outdoor area overlooking the marina.
