Came here yesterday for brunch with my friend. First time here. First, I want to commend the waitstaff Catherine. She is an absolute gem! Very, very helpful and my friend and I were kind of a pain as we were asking a lot of questions and I could not decided on what I wanted. The brunch menu is extensive and I wanted everything. I left her a 25% tip, but after I left I felt she deserved more. Speaking of tips, their suggested tip at bottom of receipt is based the check price after taxes. This is stated on the check... The drinks: We decided to start with drinks. My friend had the Moscow mule and I had the Bloody Mary. My bloody Mary was very good and strong and came with 3 huge olives. The olives tasted fresh. I've had weird tasting olives in other places. I liked it so much, I had another. Big mistake... My friend liked her Moscow Mule. The food: I had the turkey burger with bacon and avocado and truffle fries. The burger was cooked to perfection. It was not dry, but juicy without being under cooked. The bacon was perfect and the slices of avocado were fresh. My friend ordered the Ham Benedict. I didn't taste it but she said it was very good. The eggs looked perfectly done. That came with a side of potatoes. I think this will be my new brunch spot when I come to visit North Jersey. I recommend them. read more

Came there last night for the first time. Met some friends at the bar. The lady bartenders were surly, inattentive, and just plain mean. Not sure what's up, but these girls are clearly not happy to be there. Hospitality is not their specialty. In contrast, the guys offered kindness, smiles, and friendly banter. Same night, same time, same bar. When I inquired with the host staff, they exchanged knowing glances, smiled, and said, "We hear you." I'm going to guess I'm not the first person to render this opinion. It's a nice place, with a pleasant ambiance, but I don't know how long people will overlook this problem before deciding to stop coming. read more

Was here about 4 years ago and service was terrible , was in town once again and decided to give another try , well well it was even worse than the first time . Sat at the bar and had to basically wave to the bartender to get a drink ( the bar was basically empty ) . After a while she hands us our beer and never offers a menu or anything , we sat there for 45 minutes and no one asked if we needed another drink or food . TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE . Then we asked for the bill and they charged us $10 for two beers , a bit overpriced . Not to mention they never gave us our change , they just assumed to keep everything . We found coda kitchen n bar on yelp n thought we'd try it for Saturday dinner, It's in downtown maplewood. Found parking by the train station n a short walk, They had outdoor n indoor seating. We preferred the indoor seating as it was a hot day. Friendly welcoming staff. Ordered the New England clam chowder n calamari salad for appetizers. Soup was good n had plenty of clams n was b flavorful. The salad had bite size mango pieces n a nice dressings. More than enough for 2 people. For entrees was looking for the roasted monkfish which they had on the on line menu but unfortunately it was not in the menu at the restaurant. Instead had the creole flounder.. Was delicious w flounder shrimp n pieces of crab meat. Was delicious n had a spicy kick to it. Also got the Louisiana friend chicken. Was ok. A lil big. We topped it off with blondie n ice cream. The Beer Burger is amazing. Cheddar cheese, bacon, onions, pickles, and the juicy burger... delicious even medium well! Service was a bit hit and miss while they were busy, so we had to flag them down periodically, but they didn't try to rush us out. Will be back for this burger once my arteries are clearer... Ambiance - We sat outside on a nice night. Its right on the street so there is going to be noise. My chair was sloped so I felt very low. My wife was higher up. Maybe there is a way they could fix the angle of the outdoor patio. Food - Food was very good. We both got lamb burgers and a crab cake app. Crab cake was a lot of crab. Not too much filler Service - 6 start service If I could do that. Christine B was great. I hope I remembered her name. My wife has a lot of food restrictions and she went above and beyond to make sure there were no issues and my wife was accommodated. She was also very patient. Only reason I gave 4 stars is the salty table and feeling low. Its a part of the experience and I think those things should be addressed. read more

I love Coda and eat here frequently. My experience last week (on Friday) was pretty bad. Our server was friendly, but service was atrociously slow, almost to the point I thought we were forgotten about. Moreover, more concerning, the bathrooms were filthy. No toilet paper, dirty surfaces, etc. I just get the feeling it's a dirty environment. These have been getting worse over the past year. read more

It may be entitled Bar but it has more of a diner vibe - in that the variety of food and the portions are huge. I tried their English breakfast and the sauces, tomatoes, bacon, eggs, home fries could not be finished, even though it was excellent. I love this place. Casual vibe with outdoor seating. Nice bar. We came here with a large group last night . We split several appetizers . Some really good, some meh. Wings were really good . My wife had the roasted salmon. Our friends had several dishes. All enjoyed their meals I had the jambalaya which was decent, not great . Our server was attentive and took great care of us. I went during a happy hour- If you haven't been to Maplewood, you'll see how cozy of a town that is and this place is located in the heart of it all! It's also close to the train station. Solo lunch on a cold winter Saturday. Decent selection of beers but only 2 IPAs. I was craving a burger so went with the Classic American burger. It was just okay. The burger patties were dry which was disappointing. The Mac sauce that came on the side helped a little but still left much to be desired for the burger overall. The fries were excellent though - crispy and the "fresh cut" fries I typically like. I had been eyeing the short rib grilled cheese on the menu so would prob try that next time. One thing about my cousin - if you tell her you're in her town she will make a plan to meet up ASAP. Parking was a breeze! I walked right in and sat at the bar while I waited. The bartender was friendly and asked me if I had tried the Pumking (my fave) in a glass rimmed with pumpkin spice. I finished up my beer just as my cousins arrived and we sat at a table. Highlights: The menu - everything from burgers and wings to southern comforts and cocktails. Seating: bar stools were wooden yet sturdy. Tables had bench seating with supportive backs. Ozempic where?! Wegovy who?! Let me fat comfortably in peace please. Service: our server made great recommendations for her top 3 items. I ended up ordering the burger she suggested and will now make her beneficiary of my insurance policy because woo it was outstanding! Drinks: curated selection of craft beers, fantastic cocktails. Our order: I got their version of an upscale Big Mac with sweet potato fries. Cousin 1 got truffle fries and a salmon salad. Cousin 2 got shrimp baos. There were 3 to an order and they were huge and stuffed to the brim! Bill was knocking on $200 but we also drank. Teehee. If I lived in the area this would be one of my spots. The owner here is a jerk. I ordered a drink 10 min before the last call, and he was mad that I had a couple of sips left 8 minutes after the close. Like, tell your bartenders to stop serving earlier. ***4 1/2 stars*** It's been ages since I've been to Maplewood (literally the last time was to see Jobs with Michael Fassbender in theaters, which was in 2015), but the minute I got to the downtown area I remembered how insane the parking/driving situation is over here. Weird one-way parking spots, yet two-way streets, and obviously the fact that it was two days before Christmas on a Saturday wasn't ideal. Since I didn't feel like being a creepy parking vulture, I just drove straight through the chaos and parked a few blocks away in a residential area. No drama, more Fitbit steps. Coda was easy to find despite numerous businesses in the area - prominent signage right in the middle of everything. This is my kind of place, with an edgy/dark interior and gastropub vibes. Despite that, I actually saw a ton of families in there, though Coda doesn't scream kid friendly (not anti though, necessarily). My chum and I secured a high top table in the front bar area right next to the window, which allowed for some primo canine viewing, most of whom were appropriately decked out in knitted sweaters. Tis the season. I didn't have to browse the brunch menu for very long, and decided on literally the first item right at the top, which was a pretty classic breakfast sandwich featuring egg (sunny-side up for me), cheese, bacon and my favorite bread-like accompaniment, the almighty biscuit. It was very good, though the biscuit was on the drier side (which, coupled with its crumbly nature, is probably why most people don't go down that road). Everything else on the sandwich was top notch. The roasted potatoes were actually TOO seasoned for me, which is a rarity; it drowned out the actual potato. It was also cooked with onion, so they basically doubled down on the flavoring - I would just cut one of those out, and I think they'd be good. The service was excellent. The place was decently packed and yet our waitress somehow found the time to stop by very regularly and chat for a minute or two each time. Super personable and friendly, and was honestly one of the most pleasant people I interacted with this year in a restaurant (and that's saying something). Unquestionably improved the experience. My only reluctance to coming back is that nutty downtown area, but I'm not going to blame Coda for that - strong recommend. read more

Nice variety of food from Asian to southern; there's sure to be something on the menu for everyone. I ordered the short rib grilled cheese. I've never had port salut cheese but now I know I like it. They didn't skimp out on the meat. In fact, there was so much I couldn't finish it all. The side of fries was nothing extraordinary and the salad was overdressed. The blackberry gimlet tasted exactly as expected. Overall the service was tentative except for when I first entered - at least four workers saw me but not one, including who appeared to be the manager, approached me. In fact the hostess saw me and proceeded to browse social media on her phone - not even a hello from the very person who is responsible for a customers' initial reaction. As for parking, there's limited two hour street parking within walking distance that's unlimited in the evening. read more

I live locally and eat here from time to time. We generally enjoy it if we can sit in the window. It was dead when we arrived a little after 6 and then got packed after. I realized after it was high school graduation night - which I'm hoping explains the rest of this review. The food was fine. The only food complaint was that it seemed like the grilled cheese and tomato soup appetizer had been left for a while before we got it because the cheese had hardened and it was hard to tear into the sandwich. Service was completely off. We got our drinks and mine was a little too sweet. I figured I would wait till the server checked on us to as for a little extra seltzer to cut the sugar. It took about 40 minutes for him to talk to us again and that was only I stopped him to ask where our entrees were. My husband was without a drink for at least 10 minutes. The server seemed very invested with chatting to a couple of women at an outside table so we couldn't get his attention any earlier. We even gave the hostess and manager pleading looks a couple of times as we sat there with only my drink in front of us - but didn't go up to them. When I said to the server that everyone at the 2 tops behind us who were sat way later for their food, he blamed it on our appetizer. He disappeared toward the kitchen and came back 5+ minutes later and said our food would be out 3-4 minutes later. It was even longer than that so sure they missed our order. Usually I visit Coda if I'm looking for a quick drink/ appetizers after work but I finally had dinner here and it did not disappoint. I ordered the BBQ Beef Short Rib : House-made BBQ sauce, sweet corn pudding, cole slaw and Mexican Street Corn. The ribs were fall of the bone and the corn pudding was amazing. Now I had a few cocktails and although tasty, they weren't strong. The restaurant is pretty small so I wouldn't suggest having a group dinner here but it's a great place for a quick bite. read more

Brunch on a Saturday was on the list so this was the spot as the locals in our party had been here and recommended Coda. Busy around 1 but our table was ready in about 10 minutes. It was loud and upbeat and they have a decent sized Bar area that was packed. We ordered the House Breakfast (soft scrambled eggs as ordered, buttery/flaky biscuit -comfort sampler), chicken & waffles and the fried chicken breakfast sandwich. (Tender chicken with a just right crispy coating.) All enjoyed their meal and couldn't finish as portions were substantial. Espresso would have been good but, surprisingly, they had regular coffee only. Our server was attentive and service minded and she actually took care of some of our party on a previous visit.
