This place was great. We were in the area for an event, and found this place. I'm so glad I stopped in. The wait was long; unfortunately we were there on a holiday. But, we grabbed a seat at the bar, when they opened up. I ordered a tea and burger. Eventually when it came out and remade, it did come out hot, fresh, and fully cooked. I do know they were having a busy night, but my food ended up being awesome! I would definitely stop back in if I was in the area. I recommend this spot, if you haven't been here. It's right at the train station. So you can see and hear the train fly through, when you're seating. The food, the service the ambience is gonna be everything that you need on a night out. I had the pleasure of going to boxcar bar and grill on women's appreciation day. So yes, this review is slightly late but in my defense, my phone was broken and I had to get the photos. I like intimate settings, and I love when they're paired with amazing food. I have a thing for tuna so when I see it on the menu, I definitely have to order it. I got it medium originally. I enjoyed it, but I sent it back to be cooked well which was even better. That was so cool. It was an option. My waiter was Frank. He let me know. I could send it back to get cooked more. My Bestie ordered the mushroom raviolis. I'm not really a mushroom fan, but the ravioli was awesome. So if you want to try mushroom differently, I do recommend this dish. Noni's chicken was basically smothered chicken, mashed potatoes and spinach. I'm Jamaican so that was a good spin on what I'm used to which is my stew chicken. I'm surprised how crispy and tasty the chicken wings were. I honestly expected them to be messed up, but that's the best part about going to new restaurants you have to be open to surprises. Shawn, I'm not sure if he's the manager most likely is he came around and said hello just to make sure we were enjoying our time. We definitely want to make this spot more of a regular spot for us. Returned to Boxcar for dinner with friends. Drinks were delicious. I had the City Views. My friend had the Bombay Sapphire martini and my Wife had a Tito's Mule. We ordered the chopped salad which took a long time to come out. French onion soup which was enjoyed. For entrees the Faroe Island salmon, station burger, smoke stack burger and fries. Burgers were yummy. Sorry no pics was really dark in here. I would definitely dine here again for a tasty meal. read more

Hidden within the Short Hills train station is a wonderful bar and grill. Bar is on one end, while the dining area is in what is normally the train station's waiting area. Dining room is warmly lit, making it the great place for a small family dinner or a romantic dinner. Service was absolutely superb. Sean was welcoming and brought us complementary arancini (excellent flavor, perfectly crisp on outside). Cocktails excellent. While they have sandwiches , burgers and tacos, we went the direction of Italian entrees which they had on special that evening. It's a restaurant in a train station at Short Hills but it feels like being welcomed into somebody's home who also has a bad ass restaurant in it as well. They don't seem to miss a beat. The meatballs. When they arrived, there was no ricotta. I'm thinking, what's going on? Until the first bite. I wanted to apologize to someone for just thinking it. So, good. Firm but soft. Moist because they were cooked perfectly. These meat balls need no ricotta. You couldn't ask for a more perfect meatball. The Arancine were amazing. The rice perfectly cooked. Not too soft. The crust perfectly crunchy. The flavor, just the right amount of cheese. The texture between the crispy and softness is just great. The mushroom ravioli was a standout. Wild mushroom ravioli with shaved truffle. There was no perfunctory blessing of the dish with some awful truffle product. Straight up legit. The pizza. Neopolitan style. Probably, the best I've had in years in this area regardless of style. The pepperoni pizza is like a tutorial on how to cook a pizza. I could keep on going but then I'd just start to drool and embarrass myself. These guys get it. They'll doing great, simple food and getting all the easy things right and finding details that would go unnoticed except for the fact that when you have to leave you realize you had a great time. Went here tonight with my friends. It's located in what used to be the Station house at the Short Hills train station ( might still serve as a waiting area when closed) . It does have a nice charm and ambience. Honestly just wasn't impressed with the food or drinks. Ordered a Vodka and grapefruit and if it had any vodka in it you wouldn't know. Drinks were also small. We ordered some wings as appetizers and while they were tasty, they were definitely overcooked. Same can be said for my bacon cheeseburger that I ordered medium rare , but came out closer to well done and just disappointed. My buddy said the same thing about his personal pizza pie. He said it was just alright. Another friend ordered the pork chops and said they were great. Service wasn't great on a slow night. My friends pizza came out at least 10 minutes after the rest of us were served. Overall, just not a place I think I'll be returning to. read more

Came here for drinks and appetizers on a 2nd stop and was treated to good service which is always a good start. We got the Jumbo wings and Teriyaki cauliflower I believe, I can't quite remember. The wings were great. True to size, crispy and saucy - something that is a miss with many places that serve up buffalo wings. The Cauliflower however was a bit more forgettable. The presentation was excellent up until is I realized it was it was cauliflower head with the sauce drizzled on top. A couple problems with this. Having to cut it up was king of a pain, especially as a shared appetizer. It didn't seem cooked much so it was tough to cut into. Lastly it didn't seem like the flavor blended fully with it. As I mentioned it's like the sauce was drizzled on rather it was cooked alongside the cauliflower so it could marinate a bit. Needless to say it was disappointing, so I'd avoid this. The drinks were good. Priced expectedly, but they use the good stuff and you can tell. I'd like to give this place another shot. It's outside the the train station but away from lots of foot traffic so it's a good balance. read more

My friends and I got together after work for drinks and food. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. At first I didn't see where the restaurant was but it is located right by the train station. I walked in and found some seats by the bar where we sat. Amy was our bartender and she was good. I only drank so I had Merlot. My friends got food and drinks which they enjoyed. There is no happy hour here fyi. The bill wasn't too bad. All in all we enjoyed our time. read more

A hidden gem!! My family and I had dinner here yesterday and every single dish from the appetizers to dessert were delicious. I couldn't ask for better service, we were treated so nicely and our server was very attentive. They offer outside dinning, bar seating and even a main dinning room. I came here for cocktails 10 years ago when they 1st opened but had not eaten here until this last weekend. If you're into trains, this is a very cool spot as it's in the actual station. If you eat outside you can enjoy watching the trains go by as you eat. We had the loaded tots and the mushroom ravioli as apps which were both very tasty. I had the Mahi tacos that I really enjoyed, I just thought that they needed a bit more fish in them. We had a late lunch there a month ago-the last beautiful Saturday that was warm enough to dine outside. We had a lovely table, and what a wonderful adaptive use of the train station waiting room. I went to elementary school just down the road, and growing up the space was always filled with businessmen smoking and reading their NYTimes waiting for their Manhattan bound trains to come! Now it's terrific food with a very smart crowd-and the food, while not top notch, isn't meant to be. Moms can meet their husbands with the kids for a meal after the ride home, or more likely the nanny can bring the kids to meet mom and dad coming home from work. There really is a wide variety of food that will make the kids and mom and dad happy, and mom and dad will enjoy the cocktails anyway. I think the favorite thing I had was the fried artichokes with dipping sauce. They have a handle on fried foods, the French fries were sublime as well. Well crafted burgers too. read more

Their Tuesday special for happy hour is half off a bottle of wine (ranging from $30-$40) and $5 beers. I was not so intrigued by any of their happy hour specials... They had $5 pizzas and five chicken wings for $5... I understand that the area is wealthy but they could've definitely done more. So I ordered off the main menu and got a hamburger which was cooked perfectly. Party of 3, Thursday night: 2 cheddar-bacon burgers (whatever it was called on the special menu); 1 Cobb salad. **Cobb Salad: Before taking my first bite, I tossed the dressing into the salad and noticed there was hardly any bacon in the salad. The lack of bacon piqued my curiosity so I continued to search to see how much was given. I counted 5 tiny pieces (about the size of half a paper clip) in the salad. An $18.00 salad with 5 tiny pieces of bacon. I mentioned this to the waitress who rectified the situation by bringing a serving of bacon in one of those small stainless steel vials that are used for condiments. When she came back with the bacon I asked her if there was any avocado in the salad because I didn't see any. And she replied the avocado is cut up very small. I didn't taste any avocado until the last 3 bites. As for the Green Goddess dressing: it was a beige vinaigrette. Google any image of Green Godess dressing and it's green and herbaceous- not what was served to me. **Cheddar bacon burger: only one slice of bacon on the burger. Great taste, but cheap on the bacon. Would I return? Not likely. Cute location at train station. But not getting full value. Good luck to the establishment, hope the business survives. read more

WOW, WOW, WOW. The best dinner and drinks we've had in a while. Super attentive staff and the owner is on premises checking in on all his guests. The seasonal cocktails and craft beers were great. Crystal our server had great suggestions and checked on us several times. Super fresh ingredients and house made.. everything! Mahi mahi tacos and station burger did not disappoint. The loaded tater tots were some of the best we had and they were huge. Wish that we lived a little closer so this could be a mainstay for us but we'll definitely stop in next time we're in the area. Typical bar in the Short Hills train station. The hostess and waitstaff were super friendly and you can't beat the novelty of the location. We arrived at 6:30 on a Monday and ordered cocktails. Although busy it wasn't packed yet it took more than 15 minutes to get our drinks which were ok. We ordered a burger and wings which were good but again took longer than expected to arrive. You dine in the station waiting room, sit on an old oak bench and admire the century-old decor. We visited on a quiet Sunday hoping for brunch but there's no special menu for that. Started with pretzels, 3 for $12, needed more time in the oven but the cheese sauce was good. My dining companions got the pulled-pork sliders (3 for $14) and fish & chips ($16), both arrived with great french fries. My Caesar salad was a-ok but $13 is too much for just romaine greens. Service was friendly and competent. The tilty wobbly banged-up old tables are not much to brag about tho. Went over there with co workers, the food was good, but they were late, we asked for drinks twice and they didn't have them, we asked for appetizers and the entries and all the food came together. Actually, the entries came first and the appetizer arrived minutes after. After that, a supervisor or manager came to the table and asked for feedback and when I tried to tell him everything that went wrong, he said they were too busy and short staffed. The vibe is a fun neighborhood joint that's literally part of the Short Hills train station but they've done a good job with the space. On our initial visit to Boxcar, we were greeted and seated within a reasonable wait time. At the time, the restaurant appeared busy, aside from all of the hustle and bustle, the wait staff was accommodating and generous. The manager currently on site made sure we were taken care of even though the wait was long. They ensured we did not leave with a sour taste in our mouths from our dining experience. First time here, love the location, interesting to watch the trains pull in and go out. Came without a reservation, which we were asked although the place was empty when we arrived, but filled up pretty quick, which would explain the busboy continually coming by to grab our plates and hurry us along which was a bit annoying. Drinks were good, although they were out of a couple of craft beers that I had wanted to try, Food was good, portions are a bit on the small end for appetizers when you consider the price. Not a large selection which is something they need to improve on. You are basically drawn to the burgers since they make up the biggest choices on the menu. Service was good, lots of attention paid as far as filling up water glasses and checking on our group for anything. My biggest gripe, and its a first world problem for sure, is that i asked for rare and got medium, not the worst thing I know but I really enjoy my burger rare so it was annoying.
