I wanted to attend the carriage house entertainment event for my birthday and I had an amazing time! It was a Golden Girls Murder Mystery night with a 3 course menu in addition to the murder mystery. Such a fun concept and outstanding food! The shrimp cocktail and crab cake were excellent and I absolutely loved the polenta that was served with the salmon. My husband's pasta with vodka sauce was also stellar. Our server Brandon was a gem and was so friendly and took great care of us. The ambiance in the restaurant is beautiful. A couple of hiccups, like serving us bread without butter and the crab cake could have used a little more sauce, but a fantastic meal and night out! read more

My friend and I attended the Murder Mystery last night. It was pretty lame! As for the restaurant, the room is well appointed and the chairs very comfortable. The wait staff was courteous but they are in a rush and our drink glasses removed while we were in the ladies room. I was still drinking it! I was given another at no cost. The shrimp cocktail was excellent. The salmon and polenta were just okay. My friend had the pasta with asparagus and peas. You would need a magnifying glass to find them! The desserts were mediocre. If the prices were lower, I wouldn't mind so much. But between the tickets, pre fixe meal, drinks, tax and tip, it cost each of us $150. We could have had a much better meal at Cara Mia and brought our own wine. read more

In spite of having 6 pm reservations, our drinks took over 35 minutes to come out and we did not receive our main course until 7:15 pm. With the show starting at 7:30, we should have had plenty of time to eat within an hour and a half, but we ended up having to take our dessert in to go boxes with 4 minutes to curtain time. The soup was bland and lacked flavor. The crab linguini was tasty. We had the Old Fashioned and recommend using the same variety menu offered at the theater. The old fashioned in the restaurant was too sweet and not as well made as the mix that was offered in the theater. The food was absolutely amazing from start to finish. I was there with two friends before the show we were all impressed with everything and we were glad to be able to sit and enjoy and not be rushed. The Carriage House Restaurant is literally steps from the PaperMill Playhouse. Great to stop in prior to a performance. The atmosphere is best described as "cozy and rustic". I've stopped in about 2-3 times for drinks and appetizers. The food has always been very tasty. Little on the pricey side. On a positive note, you're only a few steps away from the theater. As of now, I've had Chicken Sausage Appetizers and a Steak Quesadilla. Nice wine and cocktail list. We've enjoyed their wine and cocktails on a previous visit. In December '23, I had an issue making reservations. Left two telephone messages and never received a call back. I couldn't even make a reservation on Opentable or Resy. We stopped in and informed the hostess of the issue. Anyway, we ended up eating at the bar. The Carriage House Restaurant does offer Cabaret and Murder Mystery shows. read more

The Carriage House, which is mostly associated with being the restaurant you go to before you see a show at Papermill Playhouse has summer hours as well during the downtime between theater seasons. For a period of maybe 8 weeks, there are no shows and so, the Carriage House has other entertainment like piano nights on Wednesdays and live jazz on Thursdays. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The live jazz was *chefs kiss* so good[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], the waitress/bartender provided good service but never rushed us, the food was excellent (and vegetarian friendly), and the chef even came out to greet everyone seated before the end of the night. Food was okay but grossly overpriced for a small sandwich and very small beet salad. I wouldn't ever go back for their overpriced Prix Fixe menu, for $42 per person at lunch an okay/somewhat decent salad and sandwich should definitely have come with a dessert and soft drinks. They charge $5 for an unsweetened iced tea (non flavored) and you don't even get a free refill. The food was decent as I said but nothing special, and honestly I would not waste the money again for a $120 lunch that you could easily have gotten at a deli for less than $30. Service was honestly just fine, we weren't in a rush as we had a show at 1:30 and had booked an 11:15 am reservation, but it's a good thing we did book so early for the lunch because we didn't receive the food until the 1 hour mark and didn't get the bill until near 1 pm (after having to flag down our waitress to ask twice). I don't really take issue with the service, we planned for a leisurely lunch in advance so I recommend you do the same for any show day reservation at this place. But I definitely won't go back for the reasons I listed above. So many great places in Millburn that are not so grossly overpriced, go elsewhere! read more

Perfect place to go for a pre-show meal. The food was great, the wine selection was great and the waiter and staff were very friendly and attentive. I started with the shrimp cocktail - the shrimp were huge and very fresh, the cocktail sauce nicely seasoned (tasted homemade). Next I had the Wagyu Beef - it was delicious but the highlight for me was the puree and brown sauce/gravy...I believe it was potato and root vegetables. It was the creamiest, lightest, most delicious version of mashed potatoes ever! For dessert I had the chocolate/vanilla mousse - the flavor was good but the texture was not as "fluffy" as I like my mousse. Next time I'll try a different dessert. We attended Brookside Cabaret night, where The Carriage House provides dinner. It was a wonderful evening outside with pretty delicious offerings and excellent service. We chose the table in the back and loved our time there. The Caprese salad (too many soggy croutons- and btw - why add those?) and green tomato gazpacho apps were ok. Our main courses were quite delicious- pork chop and skirt steak hoagie. The key lime pie was the winner for dessert. The chef greeted every guest and visited each table, which was a nice touch. The perfect place to go for lunch before a show at the Papermill Playhouse! We went before the Great Gatsby Musical and they had wonderful themed cocktails and a great prefixe 2 course menu with options to add on dessert! We got the Dazzling Daisy and the Bees Knees cocktails, both delicious! I had the Moroccan Roasted Red Pepper Bisque and Steak & Mushroom Pot Pie which were both fantastic! I am still thinking about that pot pie, it was like a warm hug! We then added on the themed "Gatsby Gateau" a Chocolate Flourless Pistachio cake, SO DECADENT! Most people just come here before/after a show because it's attached to the Papermill Playhouse. I came before a matinee show. They only have a pri fixe menu unless you sit at the bar. Honestly, the food was good but I was not blown away by anything. For $30.00 per person (lunch), it is a good value. The portions were a nice size. You can choose an app, main and dessert. Coffee is included with the dessert. They have a different menu per season. The boneless pork ribs were good. I was just underwhelmed with everything. I did not like the set up of the restaurant. They basically sat us on top of another table just to get more seating in. I would not come back. There are better options in downtown Millburn. read more

This was just not a good experience. My shrimp cocktail was good, but that was about it. I got the apple pork chop, which tasted like nothing, and was also decently dry. It came with flavorless brussel sprouts and some other food I could not even identify (didn't taste good so I didn't really care what it was). Then I got the chocolate pizza, a limited time dessert for the Mystic Pizza musical, which was also flavorless. This was my only time ever having a three course meal where I finished hungry, so I got a cappuccino, which was somehow also not good. People love this place, so maybe I got the chef on a bad day, but I would not recommend to anyone. read more

We visited the Carriage House on Sunday, 4/28/24. It was the first time. You can not beat the convenience if you have tickets to a show at the Papermill Playhouse, located a mere 50 feet away. I must say, it was a great experience. The prix fixe menu had lots of great choices, and the food was very good. However, it is the staff that makes this restaurant special.I always enjoy watching the chef patrolling the dining room to ensure everyone is satisfied with his food. There were two small problems that came up, neither of which caused us much concern. However, the server and manager were incredibly concerned and responsive. The Carriage House is a good and convenient option to grab food or a drink before a show at Paper Mill Playhouse or during intermission. Tip: The wine here is much better than what they serve in the theater! If you have the reusable Paper Mill wine cups (available for purchase at the theater bar), you can take your wine to-go and enjoy it during the show. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio, had a glass at the restaurant, and then brought the rest with us. There were two of us and we shared an appetizer and a dessert. For Our Wedding Anniversary I took my Beautiful Wife to this Beautiful Restaurant. This was Our second visit to the theater but Our first to the Carriage House. We had the perfect view of the theater and the tranquile surroundings of the walking path next to the river. We had just left the playhouse after viewing a sensational musical/comedy version of the iconic Honeymooners. We had 12 people in our party and were looking for a large friendly venue to relax and eat. We found a wonderful old.world styled bar and grill right in the heart of town...the Carriage House. We sat at a large rectangular table and enjoyed a fun meal. Our waiter was savvy and made sure that the "kids" were kept busy and having fun with an assortment of fabulous finger food. Spicy hot chicken wings, hamburgers, French fries, pizza and salad were instant hits with the gen z group. We adults feasted on : boneless short ribs, flatbread pizza, roast pork, French fries and an awesome salad of spring greens, apricots,goat gouda, almonds, For dessert our table enjoyed ice cream, wild blueberry, blackberry pie, chocolate truffles and New York cheesecake. The menu was limited, which was not too unusual given the times, and the noise level was very high, with the tables crammed into the space. The service was erratic and rushed; before we were done with appetisers, the entrees appeared. The wine was served half way through the entrees. The duck confit was excellent, but it was served on a mound of COLD polenta. The chocolate mousse was dry, as was the cheesecake, which amazed me. I had reservations for three at the Carriage House before a Sunday matinee at the Paper Mill Playhouse. It was a great way to start the day, they offered a pre-fixe brunch menu with great options. I started with the house Bloody Mary which came with a shrimp, olive and celery skewer- an appetizer in itself! For my meal I chose the Soup of the Day which was a vegetable minestrone soup with mini ravioli, it was delicious! Just the right amount of soup for a first course serving. For the entree I went with the Spinach, Artichoke & Gruyere Frittata with Lobster Cream Sauce. It came in a deep custard cup and was amazing! The cream sauce was an excellent addition. To finish, I chose the Gingerbread Cake with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting, Pears, Toffee Crunch. It was light and a great way to end the meal with a cup of coffee. My friend and I dined there on Sunday afternoon before the play at the Papermill Playhouse. Our server's name was Chris and she was absolutely lovely. I had to wait quite awhile for my friend to arrive but she greeted with me with a big smile and explained the lunch menu and the cocktail menu. I began with a Moscow mule and then talked me into their featured espresso martini which was fantastic. My friend had the Margarita which she also enjoyed. Our food was timed perfectly and was excellent. The atmosphere is very laid back and enjoyable. Well done to someone who has found a way to do it right!! The campus is a brick lined stream side courtyard softly backlit by trees filled with soft white lights. We came for dining under the stars with live cabaret style music with incredibly talented performers singing and playing show tunes The meal was Excellant. Salmon perfect! Simple idea if your not open for dinner make sure your outlets for clients making reservations are updated. Living locally I supported the carriage house during covid by making sure we ordered takeout a few times. The carriage house was recently renovated and it is gorgeous! I loved the artwork on the walls. I got the pre fixe lunch with my mom, aunt and grandma before seeing A Chorus Line. For three courses it was only $20! For starters I got Baby Greens with Autumn apples & spiced pumpkin seed brittle with Dijon vinaigrette. Delish. For my main course I got the Spinach salad with roasted chicken, pears, toasted almonds, and pomegranate vinaigrette. This was good, but the dressing was a bit thick and probably unhealthy. For dessert I got the trio of homemade cookies, but also tried the cobbler. Both good. I also got an iced coffee and a nice piece of warm bread and butter which were both included in the price. Just like JK we have/ had reservations for 4:30 on January 2, 2021 made through Opentable. Although we received an email a week or so ago that A Jolly Holiday was canceled due to COVID there was no indication that this included the restaurant. Because of this we decided to try the restaurant as it looked like a nice place to eat. Luckily, I called and checked to see if there was an earlier time. The voicemail at the restaurant should be clear and be the first thing you hear, "We are sorry we are closed due to COVID and all Opentable reservations are canceled" or something similar. Then you should contact Opentable and let them know so your customers will not receive instructions asking them to confirm a reservation at a closed restaurant! I will not be recommending or trying this restaurant in the future. read more

Had lunch here before seeing a matinee. Each course was absolutely phenomenal. Portions were just right and the service was outstanding. Both my friend and I had the wild mushroom puree soup. I'm not a mushroom soup person, but I couldn't stop eating it, it was extraordinary. My friend had a chopped salad with chicken and I had for cheese pasta purses with carmelized onions and pecans. Pineapple upside down for dessert. I can't say it enough how delicious the food was. Certainly a very refined menu, however the chef has a true gift for appealing to any palette. Soooooo disappointed with the 2 lady Bartenders at Carriage House Bar. As Papermill Playhouse Members, my hubby&I frequent this area, and have always wanted to try Carriage House when we had the time before a show. Well, before last nights Sunday show, we went in to get a drink and make reservations to have dinner before next show in June. I stood at the bar over 10 minutes and neither bartender acknowledged me, they served the few people in front of me and walked around me to collect the checks and clean up the empty tables, never even making eye contact. As a former bartender myself, That's disgraceful and disrespecting . We did NOT make reservation, we'll be dining elsewhere with the many great restaurants in the area. read more

We are subscribers for 4 years and have always had wonderful service at the bar for food and drinks. Today, there were restrictions. We were told we could not order a meal at the bar even though there was only 1/3 capacity in the bar and restaurant. The bartender definitely turned away customers seeking food at the bar and told them to go to Charlie Brown's. The diningroom seems elegant enough but the service was very slow and our meals were good, but overpriced for what we got. $40.00 for Salmon that was such a tiny portion and the drinks were high too. When we got our bill it came to about $60.00 per person. For that price, I could eat at one of the high end restaurants in Millburn. I will not be coming back here again. read more
