Been with the Codella family for 8 years. They are genuine, good hearted people that care about the people that train at their academy. Mike Codella is the only Renzo Gracie Blackbelt running an academy on Staten Island at the the time of this review. He's a legit BJJ instructor that trains with all his students and has forgotten more about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu than many of these new schools are beginning to teach. This place is horrible. They dont care about beginners. Instructor is a jerk and is barely there. These reviews are mostly nonsense. They aren't beginner friendly at all. I learned more from the other white belts than i did the instructor. Take your money elsewhere if your just starting out. I aint asking for my hand to be held just dont a be a jerk to people, this dude apparently saw me do a ton of things i wasn't supposed to do during open mats, instead of coming up to me to correct me. He just stood there with his buddy saying that death awaits me. Who says stuff like that. Alot of the white belts have no clue what they are doing and someone could seriously get hurt on open mats, i know i almost did because the guy i was sparring with had no idea what he was doing, but who would know because the jerk instructor is barely there. They also make you wear a small badly made gi you have to pay 250 dollars for when you could buy your own for half that price. Really toxic culture here too, people laughing at you while you spar, ugly fat dudes insulting you behind your back. Before i get accused of being a fake person im not, ive been to martial arts schools before this and this place has a ton of redflags. read more

I've been training under Professor Codella since 2006. He trained at the Jiu Jitsu Mecca Renzo Gracie NYC and is a legit black belt under Master Renzo Gracie himself. He also trained under the legendary John Danaher. Professor Codella teaches the art in a way that's very easy to comprehend and learn. This is the best place for your children to learn jiu jitsu. The staff is extremely helpful they work with your children. If you're looking to pay for your child's belt, this is not the place for you. Every child must earn there colored belt which I believe teaches them many lessons. I must first preface this by saying I haven't attended a class there and don't plan on it. I was lied and told that they are very veteran friendly when in fact it's the exact opposite. I was lied to and told that I could be on a month to month contract when I expressed interest in classes. Shortly after signing up and having a work schedule change I called to inform them that I would no longer be able to attend classes and that I would appreciate a call back. I called on three separate occasions that week without a single call back. On literally the 31st day after signing my contract which again I thought was a month to month I was kindly contacted by the academy's collection company, I had been put into collections ! After explaining to them that I had not attended any classes and that I was on a monthly and that I would gladly pay for that month I was informed that I had signed a yearly contract and was on the hook for all of it. This place is the farthest thing from friendly and accommodating let alone vet friendly. I wouldnt recommend this place to even my enemies let alone any of my friends. Stay away for sure ! read more

Wonderful and very family oriented place. The trainers are very knowledgeable of the martial art and very considerate to others when teaching them. They train the class without being too hard on them but make sure they learn. They become very well aware of the person's limits very fast. My son has been going here for a few years and has a learned a lot from Codella's BJJ Academy. Owners are very understandable as well, most nicest people you will ever meet. I have been training at this academy for years, The instruction is as technical and detailed as if Renzo Gracie himself was teaching. Mike has been training under him for over 20 years and has kept the same class structure that has brought him through the ranks. Convenient class schedules and even has Muy Thai instruction.
