Dr. Grant is the best vet I've ever seen. He is clear, personable, compassionate, and very skilled. He has performed two very successful dental surgeries on our 12 year old mixed-breed and she has been in top shape within days after the surgery both times. He's also been very nice to us rather than condescending, acknowledging that our dog is prone to dental decay and giving us helpful suggestions to manage her remaining teeth. I can't speak highly enough about the vets and staff here. Our dogs have been cared for by most Dr. Adrienne Bentley and Dr. Gurley. They are absolute saints! I don't hesitate to take an appointment with any others, but they are the two best vets I could ever wish for. The staff have always been very very helpful and very kind to our dogs (and us). This review covers both the vets and the staff - all have been wonderful and, when necessary, gone to great lengths to help. I'd tried a number of other local vets before following the advice I kept hearing at the dog parks: "Go to Codornices!" I had bad experiences at each, often in just one visit. I was starting to think I had unreasonable expectations or was cursed. Now, after years of trusting Codornices, I haven't had a single significant problem. They helped our Abi through some very difficult and hard to treat illnesses. They've performed surgery, treated major illnesses, and helped us prepare for her eventual passing. I don't know which I appreciate most: the quality of the medical care they provided or the deeply human and sincere compassion they showed us through those difficult times. All the staff were heros. When the time came we were able to let her go knowing she'd received the best care possible. They also were honest about what would be too much to ask of her to go through. They've walked us through extremely difficult times, always making the time to do things right. They also understood when our finances crashed and worked with us to find the best way to care for our dogs under the circumstances, guiding us honestly and clearly as to what tests would help the most, which would be nice to have but less necessary, and so on. They also coordinated in great detail with the vets and staff at Pets Referral when our Abi needed specialist care and when she needed emergency treatment during off hours. I think the best review possible came from Abigail herself: even though they had to do a number of things she didn't like, she actually pulled to go in through the door and LOVED the vets and staff there. She didn't like going down the hall, but she knew they were helping her. The folk there know how I feel, I've told them, but I want others to know as well. We'll keep bringing our other dog there as well as any future pets. read more

This was a great clinic when it was run by Dr. Hack, but it has gone downhill since he retired. The last two times we have gone it has taken an hour to see the vet, despite having an appointment. The last straw came today when we tried to book our dog in for them to take a look at an open sore on his muzzle, and they told us the first appointment would be in five days time. Victims of their own success I guess and time for us to find a new vet. read more

I took my two cats in for their wellness exams on two different days (the arrangement was due to my husband's work schedule). Not a problem. The problem I had was with the front desk staff and vet tech. The service we received there was so bad that I'm currently looking for another veterinary clinic, even though the vets we've seen (Drs. Yoo and Knoble) were very knowledgeable and nice. We had early morning appointments on both days (8:20am) and were kept in the reception area indefinitely on both occasions. The front desk staff didn't say why or apologize for the wait. And after the exam when I had to pay, the guy mumbled something about updating a reminder for a vaccine. He used a very technical name for the vaccine which I didn't know. When I asked for clarification (since I didn't know what the heck he was talking about), he made me feel as if I didn't understand English! The beef I had with the vet tech was how she couldn't take the temperature of one cat and wrongly assumed that she had tapeworms just because there were some cat litter stuck to her butt. I explained that my cats are indoor only and have very little chance of getting tapeworms. But she persisted to say that I could have brought in fleas from the outside and blah, blah, blah. She said that she'll have the vet check it out, even after I told her that my cats use Swheat Scoop which kinda resembles dried up tapeworm. But I would think that someone who works with animals on a regular basis would not jump to conclusion like that. No matter how good the vets are at this clinic, it's not worth it to get the subpar treatment by the supporting staff. read more

The staff at Codornices are some of the most caring and passionate people we have ever met. Our cat had a huge number of health issues, from FIV to worms to scary balance issues, and Codornices was always able to see her at basically a moment's notice, it was incredible. Once we were at the office, Eric and the rest of the staff at the front desk were always extremely kind and able to answer any questions we had about best practices as far as food, litter, and cat health. Eric always managed to remember every minute detail of our phone and email correspondences, and of our cat's health history, which is truly mind-boggling given how many animals we would see go in and out of the office who Eric also had this same level of knowledge about :D Dr. Grant saw our cat several times, and he always went to great lengths to really listen to what we had to say, to inspect the cat's physical symptoms as gently as possible, and to explain to us the full range of what types of underlying issues could be leading to these symptoms. He then always took our preferences fully into account before giving advice as to potential treatments, medication, etc. that could help. Finally, when it came time for things like shots or blood work, Dr. Grant really made it as painless as possible for the cat. At our last appointment, for example, we barely even noticed that he had administered the rabies shot we'd asked for because the (normally very fidgety) cat hadn't made a peep! I'm not sure what else to say besides, as 25-year cat owners at many places throughout the US, Codornices is no question the best vet we've ever had. Dr. Hack doesn't remember but he stitched up my whippet beautifully, actually following the brindle line to make the scar unnoticable. Whippets have thin skin. When the first stitches pulled out, he replaced the stitches with thin wire, at no extra cost but for the cost of the wire. He is highly experienced and skilled, but had a sweet bedside manner with worried me. He resolved an odd recurring infection in Beau's foot about eight years later. He found that the sack of a drained cyst was floating around, acting as an "invader" to his immune system. read more

However since Codornices has been taken over by ? corporate owners, there is a tendency to oversell expensive products. We probably won't be back after he retires for good. Codornices helped us coordinate our care for Sam, referring us to UC Davis' Vet. Neurological surgery. Just wanted to express my thanks to both the veterinarians and the front office staff - I know this clinic is busy and stretched to capacity at times, but I have found them to always be courteous and go out of their way to respond to some odd requests I've made over the years that I have taken my dog to their clinic. Eric at the front desk I have always found to be very courteous, and was especially helpful to a request I made today. I think the prices for their services are comparable to what you would find at any vet clinic, and especially for one in the Bay Area (I saw some other comments on here alluding to higher that average costs, but I would disagree). I've mostly seen Dr. Grant, though also Dr. Olson and Dr. Gurley at times. I've found their pharmacy prices to be higher than some other online options, but they have always been willing to write me a prescription if I'd like to fill it elsewhere. I recently had a checkup for my dog which included a heartworm test, shots etc. After the fact, I realized I was out of heartworm medication for my dog. I usually order this online, but Cordinices refused to confirm my prescription with the online provider when they were contacted. I had to go back to their offices, get a paper copy and then fax to the online store. Vet visit seemed fine, but after that I changed to a new vet. read more

I've been taking my 3 dogs, 2 rats, 2 cats to Codornices Veterinary clinic for several years, after being unhappy with other vets and/or their office efficiency. I've never been turned away at this clinic when it has been urgent. We've seen Dr. Yoo, Dr. Grant and Dr. Hack....I have high regard for all 3. They are excellent vets as well as caring and compassionate human beings. One of my dogs is an ornery border collie/jack russel mix. Dr. Grant has to muzzle him and wrestle him to cut his nails...THAT is committment. Several years ago I brought this same dog in with a fox tail and saw a new vet...a woman I'd never met before. She was nervous around my dog who was scared and in pain and she yelled at me. She was extremeley inappropriate and unprofessional. (although she did take good care of my dog, ultimately). I wrote a detailed letter about what happened, to Dr. Hack. He contacted me and acknowledged my letter and my concerns and said he would talk to her. Next time I went there she was not there anymore. We had taken our pet rats there when they each had tumors (a few months apart) and ultimately had to be euthanized. We later received a plaster paw print of each rat with their names engraved, and a sympathy card from the clinic. It's small things like that that make a huge difference. Just last night, Dr. Grant came to our house to euthanize our 18 year old girl dog. She could no longer walk. We knew this was coming. We could not have asked for a more tender and sweet way to help Lakota leave this world. Dr. Grant told us calmly and quietly, what he was going to do. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. He was gentle, respectful and so wonderful. He gave her a huge pile of liver treats as he sedated her, and in a short while after injected her with a letal dose of sodium pentathol. She calmly went to sleep and her heart stopped beating. Even as he wrapped her in a blanket to carry her out, he was quiet and respectful of who she was. I only have good things to say about Codornices Veterinary Clinic and all the veterinarians who work there. Yes, sometimes it's really crowded and the front desk people can be very busy and seem curt, but I've never been put off of treated in any way but as a valued client. read more

This review is for the home euthanasia service provided by Dr. Grant at Cordonices Vet Clinic. I didn't see a separate listing for this service that he offers, so will review here (you will need to call Cordonices for the number.) I first met Dr. Grant when he did home euthanasia for my old roommate's dying dog. I was very impressed with his gentleness and compassion, and so I called him when my dog was in severe kidney failure recently with little chance of recovery for advice. I had been keeping a close eye on my dog and doing what I could to help her and make her comfortable. I thought it would be best if she died naturally and peacefully in her sleep; I was afraid of ending her life before she was ready, and also of letting her suffer. I knew she was getting weaker every day, but she would still respond to petting, eat a little, and get up occasionally to greet someone at the door. She didn't exhibit clear signs of pain, but could not walk easily and wasn't eating much. It wasn't clear how much she was suffering. But I worried that she might be, and 4 days into her rapid decline I called Dr. Grant for advice. Dr. Grant was very kind, patient, and understanding, and helped me realize that my dog was probably more uncomfortable than I could see, and that due to the nature of kidney failure it was bound to get worse. When I called him I was not planning to schedule the appointment, but decided I didn't want my dog to suffer and that I was hanging on for me, and that she might be, too. I scheduled Dr. Grant for the following morning. Within an hour or so, I saw new signs that my dog was getting worse...she could barely stand to relieve herself and seemed dazed. I was afraid she would really hurt herself without constant support, and she didn't seem to like me carrying her in and outside either. Friends came over and agreed that she did not look good. I decided that it would be kinder not to make her suffer through the night. I called Dr. Grant back and he agreed to come out late that night to perform the euthanasia. By the time he did it felt like the right time and I was so grateful that he helped me to see that. He was as gentle and professional as he had been the first time that I met him, and made a very difficult thing go as smoothly as it can. Later I received a thoughtful handwritten sympathy card from him, which I very much appreciated. I highly recommend Dr. Grant if you are in this difficult position with your pet. read more

I have been meaning to give Cordonices Vet Clinic a 5star review, so here it goes. We have been taking our dogs (poodles with lots of health issues) here for 11 years. Dr. Grant & Dr. Gurly have been my main docs. They are very caring & genuine people. They always follow up with a phone call when the pups have had a test or procedure. they take the time to explain all procedures. The staff at the desk used to seem pretty overwhelmed, but that has changed since they have separated the dog & cat clinics. I can usually get in for same day urgent care. I highly recommend them. My husband and I moved to the Bay Area, a year ago, with our 18 year old calico cat. I asked a dog owner I knew if she had any recommendations for a good pet clinic with reasonable prices. She named Codornices. For this last year of our cat's life, she received excellent care; after we had to ease her out of her last painful illness, I received a card from the doctor, and then a letter from UC Davis that a donation had been made in our cat's name. I was amazed at this level of personal caring. I don't know how their prices compare to other animal clinics in the Bay Area, but I do know that the treatment my husband, cat, and I received was excellent. read more

I took my cat in once for a scheduled appointment for a sore on her shoulder. The treatment was fine, but I waited an HOUR for the vet, half an hour in the waiting room and half an hour in the treatment room. I guess they were having a busy day. The receptionist occasionally said something to me like "sorry, she's running a little behind today", but once I was in the treatment room waiting, NOTHING, nobody came in, not a tech, nobody. After about 20 minutes in there with my sad kitty, i opened the door, looked around and said to a tech "what's going on? is the vet here?" They assured me yes, soon, right away, etc., etc., The thing that was really galling was that the vet, when she did come in, didn't even acknowledge the fact that she'd kept me waiting, or apologize. Maybe, she had a true emergency, maybe she was having a bad day, maybe she hadn't even been told I'd been there an hour. If so, then it's a communication problem in the clinic. As I said, the treatment was fine, but I now go elsewhere. Here's what Cordornices could have done to keep me coming back: Check in with me regularly and let me know what's going on, how much longer the wait is likely to be, and APOLOGIZE, for heaven's sake, for what's happening; acknowledge that my and my pet's time is important, too. read more

We have been taking our dogs to Codornices for years, ever since Dr. Grant moved his practice there. We have always had a great experience. Eric at the front desk has always been helpful, responsive and compassionate. We have also had good experience with other front desk people but I cannot remember names. Generally we see Dr. Grant since we love him so much but in a pinch have seen other vets there. Except for a dire emergency when we had to go to Pets Emergency, we have always gotten our scheduling needs met. Dr. Grant is our animal family doctor. We completely trust him medically and with support through palliative care and end of life decisions. We feel very lucky to have Dr. Grant and Codornices close by. read more

I have been using Codornices Vet Clinic since it opened in 1974. Dr Grant, and Dr Gurley are carrying forward the excellent service and attention started by Dr Hack. Now my fifth dog is on its way to long healthy life with there great care. Be patient when waiting for them to answer the phone, as the clinic can be very busy. Sometimes they run behind with their appointments because every patient is given there full attention, even if it means taking a bit more time than was scheduled. read more

We have been going to Codornices for 8+ years for all three of our cats, and every vet we've had has been wonderful. When 2 of our cats developed lymphoma, Dr. Gurley and the staff of Cordornices practically became family members since we see them all the time. Dr. Gurley in particular is always going above and beyond, calling us late in the evenings and on weekends to make sure that we have the best plan of care for our babies. I've had nothing but good experiences with this clinic. I lean towards holistic methods and had been taking my dog Tiny to a holistic vet, but her skin problem kept getting worse. I finally gave up and decided to go to Codornices, specifically Dr. Grant, because I saw such good reviews for him. His recommendations cleared up Tiny's problem. which had been going on for months, within a few weeks. It is expensive, but so was the other place, so no complaints there. I've been taking my pets to Codornices Veterinary Clinic since I was a kid and continue to find it to be a comfortable, friendly caring vet. The doctors and techs are all great from my experience. Even thought their office is busy they take their time with their patients and make sure to patiently answer any and all of your questions. Even if you ask a million of pointless questions like I tend to. It's not cheap but they don't rip you off or anything either. I'd say it's fair. It is busy, but really it's a tiny space and they are obviously doing a good job because they are in such high demand. It's really a five star place- I'm only giving four simply because: 1.) I think they really ought to add more weekend and evening hours. Staying open till 6 or 7 seems reasonable enough to me. Maybe they could offer normal hours on Sat and Sun and take a Tuesday off if they can't be 7 days a week. 2.) When you call you sometimes get busy signals for awhile. Voicemail would be really useful, or more lines. The receptionists do a good job balancing the greeting and checking people in and out, plus handling the busy phones but it's not easy. 3.) When you call after hours you can't leave a message and you just have to call back during business hours. When you work full-time it is hard to remember to call during the work day. All and all it's easy to see that everyone who works there does it 'cause they genuinely love and care about the animals in their care. I remember about 7 years ago or so having to have that impossibly hard conversation with Dr. Hack about our family cat who was passing away and my mother not wanting to put her to sleep. His compassion and understanding of our pain and our cat's peace and well being was really clear and I still remember it vividly. They are good people and I appreciate that. read more

We have received OUTSTANDING care for our dog over the past 13 years. In fact, I can honestly say, she has lived a long and healthy life because of their diagnosis and care about 6 years ago. Dr. Grant, Dr. Hurley, and Dr. Cox are all insightful, caring vets that spend the time to explain issues and medications thoroughly.
