I had gotten the classic milk tea with boba and my friend had gotten the taro milk tea with boba as well and I've got to say, I'm a little bit disappointed in Coffee or Tea. I have been a regular customer to Coffee or Tea for some time and have loved the milk tea for not being too sweet and for the boba being perfectly soft and chewy, however, lately the consistency has to seemed to be a bit off. This time the classic milk tea seemed to have a bit of an after taste and the boba was SOO OVERCOOKED AND VERY MUSHY - which is a fatal mistake since the boba is probably the thing that matters the most to me, the boba is literally what makes milk tea even worth getting in the first place. However, I feel even more bad for my friend since I had tried a sip of the taro milk tea and couldn't help but cringe on the first sip from how sweet it was. He didn't even manage to finish the drink. Its sad to say since I know Coffee or Tea was literally one of the, if not THE FIRST, boba shop(s) on Oahu and I could not get enough of it before but I'm not sure what it is up now. Ah McCully Shopping Center, the place where the parking space is as big as a Smart Car and the Old Asian Lady driving behind the steering wheel is almost invisible unless she's sitting on a Booster Seat in her car. But for me, I'll make that sacrifice trying to find a parking stall whenever I have a craving for those amazing Espresso Shakes that Coffee or Tea serves up each and every day. I would drink these over a Frapuccino any day of the week and they also pride themselves on their Milk Tea which I am not a big fan of but that seems to be the draw as well. This Chinese owned establishment is very fast and efficient and I find them to be pretty friendly too. The have just about everything you could want for for Coffee,Espresso, and Tea Beverages. They also have a dessert selection which is just ok but people, if you love Peanut Butter, you have got to try the Hot Thick Toast with Peanut Butter. It's about as simple as it sounds but it is so,so delicious. What they do is toast a Thick Piece of White Toast and lather the top with rich creamy Peanut Butter and all I can say is how could something so simple taste so damn good? Review #140 - 2016 After our lunch at Yotteko-Ya, the kids wanted some dessert. My aunt's grandkids couldn't decide between boba drinks and shave ice, so we decided to try out Coffee or Tea since they had both. I went with their shave ice since I wanted to compare it to Waiola. I was given a choice of up to 5 different toppings so I went with the azuki beans, fresh taro, coffee jell-o, green tea ice cream and condensed milk. The shave ice itself didn't have any flavor, just plain shave ice topped with my topping selections. The toppings were all pretty good. Unfortunately, the ice wasn't as fine as what I've been used to at Waiola so I won't be coming back here for their shave ice. Although, at $6 each for a big serving, it's not too bad of a deal. The kids got an order of the rainbow shave ice, green tea boba and a fresh taro boba, while my aunt got an iced coffee. I tried the fresh taro boba and it was really good. I've been so disappointed by the bad after taste of having taro in a powder form that I didn't realize how good fresh taro actually tastes as a shake. The girls who work here are very friendly, so I'd say that this place definitely deserves 3.5 stars, but the shave ice just didn't do it for me so I couldn't bump it up to a 4-star rating. read more

Following up on an article about how bubble drinks from Taiwan contain cancerous ingredients, I decided to go to Coffee or Tea and ask the workers where do they get their bubbles from... He told me straight up, we get them from Taiwan. YEEEEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.. Won't be coming here for a while. Because of the research done in Hong Kong about this risky cancer products coming from Taiwan, millions of products were taken off the shelves throughout Taiwan. However, Taiwan's drink products were distributed to Hong Kong, China, and United States. But I didn't here anything about US taking down products from Taiwan.... Other than that. My recent experience here was HORRIBLE, so that's why this place is getting only THE BAD. The Bad * Here I will tell a story. Me and Two friends. First, the guy worker comes by and asks my friend... "oh, can you scoot in a little? my boss is scared you may fall..." -- her chair was a little close to that UNNECESSARY step they have from the cashier to the tables. This was OK because it was an act out of being concerned. I should have read the reviews before coming to this establishment. One word sums up my experience and that is PETTY. The staff here are unfriendly and rude. I came here with my three kids to have dessert after having dinner upstairs. I was full so ordered one shaved ice for the three of them to share. They only gave me one napkin and two spoons. When I asked for an extra bowl, spoon, and napkins the cashier rudely said, "We don't have extra and the shaved ice is only supposed to be shared with two people and no more!" Coffee or Tea has become one of my crazed obsessions. I limit myself to coming only 3 or 4 times a week, otherwise I'd be here everyday. In fact my friend who introduced me to Coffee or Tea comes here everyday! I Secretly envy her sometimes, ok not really. But your first visit can be pretty intimidating with all the signs saying to not put your feet on the furniture, don't sit around if your not going to order, etc... But what you can do is get a nice refreshing super yummy milk tea WITH bubble ("Bubble" being tapioca bubbles). So despite the scary signs plastered everywhere I love this place! They whip up a good drink and you would think that with all the restrictive signs that workers would be scary, but think again because in actuality they're always friendly even during rushes when theres a crazy line of people waiting. The tea itself wasn't as floral as I had hoped nor did it taste of honey...but I think it was my mistake of ordering a non-milk tea at a place that advertises itself as having Hawaii's best MILK tea. The bubbles tasted a bit old, as they were weak on the edges and a bit too hard in the center...(I've worked at a bubble tea place) but the sweetness level was good. I don't get over to McCully Shopping Center often these days but I recently was walking by and needed some caffeine. Coffee Or Tea caught my eye so I decided to check it out. I was happy they had the menu in the window so I could peruse before going in. The menu is huge! I had no idea this gem existed! From your regular coffees and teas to milk teas, shaved ice, shakes, assorted iced teas, granites & more. I saw hot ginger which I almost craved for my sore throat if I didn't need caffeine so badly. I entered and was greeted immediately. This location is way bigger than I thought; there is plenty seating inside. The owner was seated at the end of the long bar and a smiling young woman was helping me. I ordered an iced regular black coffee add two shots espresso and a shot of vanilla syrup. She was nice enough to tell me the cost of the shots & syrup before punching it in to confirm I wanted it still. I had already looked so I knew but I truly appreciated that. She went to work quickly after I payed while I looked at the desserts in the case and noticed they also offer some other foods like hot thick toast with various fillings. The owner saw me taking photos of the menu and pointed to show me where they had take out menus. They happen to be reusable placemats as well - I almost felt wrong taking it. Extra nice touch! My drink was ready quickly and she asked me to taste it in case I wanted more vanilla. Talk about customer service! It was actually perfect though. I was pleasantly surprised at this cup of joe and will definitely be back in here next time I'm in the area. Coming here is always an afterthought. Like I'm waiting for Yotteko-Ya to open or I want to grab a coffee or bubble tea drink before or after picking up some donuts from Regal. I have never run afoul of their house rules or encountered the rude service frequently mentioned by other Yelpers though I can see they are definitely more friendly and engaged with Chinese speaking patrons. Personally, I have found them courteous to me - they've even brought my drink to me at a table when it is not busy. And when it is not busy, this place is a cool oasis. I like their espresso drinks best. Generally, I'm not crazy about Italian branded coffee because the product has first been shipped from Africa or South America to Italy, packaged and stored in a warehouse for who knows how long, then shipped a quarter of the way around the world to us here. However, they serve Lavazza, which is smoother, less bitter and acidic than Illy, and unusual to find in Honolulu. And their espresso machine is a vintage La Cimbali with a strictly decorative dome shaped machine on top of the working model, both with a faded gold patina. I have never seen one like it before and they are rightfully proud of it. Another plus is you can order an iced coffee or tea drink and customize it with pretty much anything they offer as an add on. The first time I tried Coffee or Tea, I hadn't yet been converted to a milk tea drinker, and I ordered a green tea sweetened with honey which set me back over $5 and I left feeling poor and confused. Over the past two and a half years I've developed an unhealthy love affair with milk tea and boba and now can truly appreciate Coffee or Tea and no longer find myself ordering $5 teas I can certainly make at home. I find myself in the McCully shopping center on a regular basis, and when I have cash on hand this is a welcome treat. My favorite is the wintermelon milk tea with light "bubbles" aka boba. Check in with Yelp and save some money off your drink as well. This business is cash only, and there is sometimes a language barrier and there's a time limit for their tables but it's a business not your living room so I understand them not wanting you to stay there all day. The drinks are tasty, the staff is courteous and it definitely hits the spot on a hot day. Their cups say they're Hawaii's #1 but they're my #2 :) read more

Two words. WATERMELON JUICE. I used to think that it was lame when people ordered watermelon juice. I can make that myself! So I've said. The first time my boyfriend ordered it, I instantly regretted not having ordered one myself. I'm pretty sure it's just watermelon, ice, and some kind of sweetener. DELICIOUS. It's super refreshing and cool; perfect for a summer day. It's seasonal though so you can only get it during the summer. Get your fix in now! Also their milk tea is probably the best on the island in my personal opinion. I like their chocolate milk tea. Slight twist on the original milk tea by adding chocolate syrup. It is on the pricey side though. Two drinks can easily cost you $8-$10. There is a parking lot but be warned, it sucks. Lot is overcrowded and parking stalls are at weird angles. Even the lower lot is way too cramped. Not much to say about the service though. They aren't exactly super welcoming. I had been to the Coffee or Tea? location in Pearl Kai, but never here at McCully before. After a savory dinner at Agu Ramen, a group of friends and I came here for dessert. I was definitely craving something sweet after indulging in that savory but salty ramen. One of my close friends highly recommended this boba place, as it's one of her favorites on the island. I'm personally grateful that the Pearl Kai location is closer to me, but this McCully location is a fine option if you're in town. Parking in this lot is always really crowded because of bunch of businesses are located in this plaza--including Regal Bakery--but I was fortunate to find parking really quickly on this particular Friday night. The stalls tend to be more compact as well. The coffee shop wasn't too crowded during the time of our visit, and our group of five found a larger table to sit at pretty quickly. If you check in on Yelp, you can get a slight discount, so take advantage of that. Half of our group ordered shave ice, but I just got a milk tea because I was already pretty full from dinner. There's a large assortment of drinks on the menu, as well as a few pastries in the display case if you're hungry. The only gripe I have about this place is that there's no restroom inside the coffee shop ... since it's primarily a café serving drinks, shouldn't there be an accessible restroom?! However, I like this spot because the boba is superb. It's a great spot if you want to meet up with friends, but I think I still prefer the Pearl Kai location because it's slightly calmer. Here's what I got: "Milk Tea": I knew I could depend on the tried-and-true milk tea from here, based on my experience at the Coffee or Tea? location at Pearl Kai. I opted for the same during this trip, since I just wanted something simple but slightly sweet. I got my medium-sized "Milk Tea" sans boba and enjoyed the slightly sweet taste. It wasn't overly sweet but was the perfect solution for dessert after a savory dinner. "Shave Ice #1": There are several different shave ice options, and this was one of the ones my friend chose. It features azuki beans, tapioca pearls, condensed milk and green tea ice cream. I'm not the hugest fan of green tea, but my friends readily enjoyed this option. One of my friends said that the condensed milk drizzled liberally on top gave this shave ice a slightly sweet taste, and the tapioca pearls gave it added chewiness. The green tea ice cream was subtly sweet and the azuki beans were almost like icing on the cake. This isn't an option I would personally order for myself, but two of my friends enjoyed it and said they would order it again in a heartbeat. "Shave Ice #2": This shave ice option comes topped with coffee jello, tea jello, coffee syrup, condensed milk and coffee ice cream. I actually had a bite of this concoction because I love coffee ice cream. I'm not the hugest fan of the jello included either in the shave ice or the teas/smoothies, but it does provide a chewy consistency to the dessert. I did like the taste of the coffee syrup and the coffee-flavored ice cream. This is sure to please any coffee fanatic out there, but the coffee flavor isn't super strong/overwhelming. "Espresso Shake": I saw this as one of the options on the dessert poster, and I definitely want to try it sometime. Based on my frequency (shhh don't tell but at least 2x a week) I'm obviously hopelessly addicted. Add in the fact that my friend is also addicted means that one of us has the urge to go for milk tea nearly every day. Located in Asia Marketplace...i mean McCully Marketplace, Coffee or Tea is the epitome of Asian tea shops. There are so many choices and they also have dessert choices like shave ice, tea jello, custard, honey toast, and waffles. As I said, I'm hopelessly addicted to the jasmine green milk tea with tea jello. This creamy lightly sweetened tea is balanced by the cubes of black tea jello at the bottom. It's so yummy. I've tried lots of other teas and drinks here only to wish I had stuck with my usual choice. I don't think this kind of tea joint is for everyone, but if you like bubble teas and milk teas and have had the ones in Asia, you will be addicted like me. It's very rare to find a place that has a great tasting drink with "pearls" cooked to perfection. They're not crunchy, not mushy, but with a great chewy consistency. If you're a first timer here, take a good look at the board. Once you have decided on your type of drink and/or flavor, than stand in front of the register, which is right next to the door. Choose your size, and if you want pearls in them. Coffee or Tea has been around for a long time since 1999. It has been in Mccully shopping center since I was in college. I think it is one of the older bubble tea places I know. I am in a milk tea mood so I wanted to try this place after a short afternoon walk. I love chocolate, so I ordered the jumbo size chocolate milk tea. Boba is automatically included in the milk tea not like some new places that charge for extra toppings. The milk tea was very good. One of the best chocolate milk teas I had. Very good chocolate taste and a light milky flavor. I normally do not like boba, but it went well with the milk tea. I might try here again but I did not see a stamp card like many other tea places. read more

To start off, the parking isn't the easiest because it's small & the parking is SUPER tight. The car next to you is literally 1 foot apart. It was hard to get my daughter out of her carseat. We went around 5-7pm & it was busy. As we got to the front it had a HUGE milk tea with boba that my girls want to take a picture with. They have the menu on the windows outside for you to take a look before entering because it's tight inside too. They have this shelve that's FULL of snacks. I feel like that's for the kids to ask there parents. The inside has 2 levels so be careful. My daughter's both fell multiple times. Seats inside are meant for 2 people for each table. You can combine 2 tables but that's it. So not good for groups to sit in. My good friends told me to try the milk tea here & it was the best that I've tasted. Sucks I only got the jumbo. I should of got the super jumbo. I like that they sell the milk tea by the gallon too, you just have to purchase the boba, straws & cups separately. We loved the original cheese cake but for $4.50 is pretty expensive. The trash can is so small that you'll have to smash it up to make it fit. We were out and about and wanted Shaved Ice so we yelped a place close by (the Snow Factory), but were disappointed to learn that all their shaved ice had dairy in it, which didn't work for my hubby. So hot, and wanting to sit down after walking the morning away, we stopped into the coffee shop in the same shopping plaza. Much to my surprise they had shaved ice on the menu too. So I ordered up two and met with a stern look at the register. Apparently the woman there didn't like what I ordered (which was a simple strawberry and pineapple shaved ice). She told me most people don't order that and they order the shaved ice combos to the left (pictured on a large poster). Well, most of those were again made with dairy and we just wanted something simple so I asked if I could just order them plain - strawberry and pineapple. She argued again that most people don't do that. OK....but can I do that? Finally, after much unneeded arguing she let me order how I wanted. I should have just turned around and left, but I was so hot and wanting to sit I figured how bad could it be. Yeah, well, don't get shaved ice here! It is basically ice with chunky topping almost like pie filling. Really odd. Once we sat down we also noticed all the signs. Do not put your feet up. Do not move tables. We are not a lounge. No restrooms. And on and on. It was the single most unfriendly place we encountered in Hawaii. Staff was rude, atmosphere was weird and stifling. One of my favorite places to get boba in Honolulu! Lots of options, and the boba always tastes fresh - not mushy or hard. I like the hot taro milk tea with boba the best. I have nothing against iced or slush, but the hot just hits the spot. There's not a ton of seating, so it's not the best spot to hang out for a big group. There are some small tables, so it's better suited for a date or small groups of 2-4. This place is cash only, so be sure you got some green on hand. I tend to pay for everything with credit card, so I've made that mistake before and have need to borrow cash from a friend. Parking is difficult since McCully Shopping Center is always busy. Your best bet is to park in the 15-minute stalls, run in to get your drink, and then head back to the car to drive somewhere else to enjoy your drink. read more

Stopped by here today with a friend for some milk tea. I ordered the Jasmine Green Milk Tea with boba (tapioca pearls). The boba is included, I know some places charge for adding boba to drinks, so that was a nice plus. The milk tea came out quickly and tasted wonderful! Creamy without being heavy, sweet without being tooth-decaying, and a great chewy consistency of the tapioca. I really love coming here for the milk tea because they have the super jumbo size and have molten boba. I always get my friend the honeydew milk tea super jumbo and I get the Milk tea super jumbo both with tapioca. I used my 10% off on the drink when you check in( only for drinks no cakes/macarons) I paid the price for the 2 superjumbo since and when I got my drink the lady who took my order and made it gave me a large milk tea instead of the super jumbo size! I like paid the super jumbo size tho. I was already stressed out from school so I just let it be. I was kinda disappointed when i received the large milk tea instead cuz I know thats not enough for me to study. Cuz I had to go back to school cuz I had to study for 5 hours before my next class. I always come here on my breaks from school to get boba tea and get some cheesecake and macarons too:) I really love this place but maybe you should retrain that korean girl cuz she doesn't know the difference between super jumbo and large:( read more

I am a huge fan of milk teas and boba. That being said, I have tried many boba places. Came here with high expectation and my reaction was "meh". Atmosphere/Service Typical cafe with lots of seating. It's a good hangout/study spot for students. Service was fast and friendly. Drink Ordered my usual, Jasmine milk tea with boba. I would have to say their Jasmine milk tea is one of the best I ever had. Not overly powdered or sweet and had a hit of floralness. You can taste the bitterness of their green tea. Their jasmine green milk tea deserves 5 stars. Reason for 4 stars was because their boba was overcooked. No chewiness and flavor. I am not sure if this was just a bad batch but I was disappointed. Conclusion Would give this place another try, maybe without boba. Drink is pretty pricey in my opinion so make sure to use the yelp check-in for 10% off the order! read more

Every time I come to Oahu, this is my go-to place. I always order the watermelon milk tea with tapioca boba. The bobas are delicious! I don't know how they do it, but the bobas are slightly sweetened and cooked just right. It's soft but not soggy and chewy but not hard. They got it just right. The milk tea isn't so sweet nor bland. I've been to Coffee or Tea way too many times to count. I always get either the regular milk tea or the honey iced green tea and definitely with boba. I love their boba because it's sweet unlike other places. I also love how they sell their milk tea by the gallons so it's handy for parties. Whenever I have get-togethers with my coworkers, they know that I will be bringing the milk tea. That's always the first thing they ask me when I show up. As I'm writing this review I am sipping their lychee smoothie with boba (my must-have). Compared to the local boba tea place in my hometown in New Hampshire their drinks are a reasonable price and totally worth it. The shave ice from here is not my cup of tea. For $6 you get a huge bowl of shave ice topped with 5 toppings of your choice. The selection includes ice cream, tea jello, boba, condensed milk, azuki beans, custard and more. All of what I ordered was good... just not together. Pudding milk tea..you are ichiban! I thought I would just order a regular milk tea with pearl because I always craved one of those. But thought I might try something new. Pudding in the milk tea? That's a first. It was delicious. I would order that again. It wasn't too sweet and that's my kind. I was happy and full after drinking it. They have really interesting drink and I wanna try all of them. Maybe next time I'll stop by again. It's a small seating area and kinda similar to Starbucks. I wonder if restaurants and stores look at their yelp reviews and make changes according to what people say. I feel like Coffee or Tea would benefit greatly by doing just that. Like everyone else, I agree that they seriously need to improve their customer service. But you can read about that in other people's reviews.. I'll focus on the shave ice! I actually came here a few days ago and tried their shave ice for the first time. I ordered take-out since I knew they would stare me down if I stayed too long. I was impressed by the sheer quantity when I opened my container of shave ice. The proportion of toppings to ice is just how I like it! It was almost a 1:1 proportion, so even though the ice wasn't very flavored, the toppings make up for it! It's been a few days, but I can't stop thinking about the taro topping. I don't understand how they make it, but it's so insanely good! It's creamy, smooth, and perfectly sweetened yet there are also chunks of taro to provide a textural balance. When here for the first time yesterday because my boyfriend was craving curry house and I was in the mood for Taco Bell so the perfect place to go was Mcully shopping center. Of course parking was bad and there was traffic everywhere, being a Friday night. We both got our food of choice and my boyfriend asked me if I wanted to try Coffee or Tea. I have never been a huge fan of places like this but I figured I've heard him talk about this place a lot so I better give it a try. Walked in, simple layout and inviting environment and best of all no line. When I was waiting for him to get his curry house, the line was out the door! I told myself, wow, something must be happening here. He orders for me his favorite drink, so we don't have to share. It was a coconut milk tea with jello instead of the pearls. I will admit it is very good! Surprised and excited, I almost drank the whole thing, but I saved some for this morning! Lol. The only thing I didn't care for was that it wasn't as chilled as I would have liked. It was cold but not really. It was like I had bought it about 30 minutes to an hour earlier and it had been sitting and the ice was melted and it was almost warm. That's not my favorite way to drink things but it if had been a little more chilled, it would have been BOMB! We will be going back in sure. Maybe next time I will ask for some ice or something to make sure that it's on the cooler side. read more
