Craving an afternoon pick-me-up, I came by Junbi at the Royal Hawaiian shopping center for a cheeky little matcha. I've had their matcha soft serve before, which is 10/10 would recommend. You can add fruit purees (like strawberry, pog, taro vanilla), toppings, and a dusting like matcha or li hing. I usually go for their classic matcha soft serve without any add-ons and it's so good. On my most recent visit I tried out their guava matcha. I was between the strawberry or guava, and they said that their guava was a top seller. I saw that one of their seasonal drinks had a strawberry cold foam, and asked if I could add that onto my guava matcha but unfortunately they were out of the strawberry cold foam but I feel like that would be such a good combo. This is a combination of flavors that will tickle your inside tastebuds! Mix together to get a smooth and delicious mix of matcha, chocolate and hazelnut. The cold foam has tiny bits of toffee. Drinks were very good, service was quick and it was in a central location at Royal Hawaiian Center. My daughter had a matcha latte with guava and I had a hojicha latte with strawberry. I think we liked the drinks because you could taste the tea but it was still sweet. Not too sweet as you can adjust the sweetness as well. They also have options for alternative milks for an additional cost. If you're Kama'aina, don't forget to get your three hour free validation at their Helumoa Hale guest services. Ok, but definitely could have been better. I've had Junbi in Irvine and it was actually significantly better than the one in Waikiki. We had the guava and the lilikoi and the regular matcha latte. All of them had a strange flavor that we didn't really enjoy. The girls behind the counter were nice and made the drinks quickly, we just didn't think that they tasted that great. I know junbi is super hyped, they have so many cute merch (miffy themed) and all, but after trying a few of their drinks I can confirm their drinks are not for me. Something about their teas taste watered down, it tastes like watered down juice and I'm not getting much tea flavor. On top of that, drinks cost $10 each. Their guava matcha was better than the other drinks like strawberry green tea/pog green tea, but I'm not a huge guava girly. Their matcha was just ok, just tastes like matcha water. Junbi is widely known for its matcha drinks and has locations all over the U.S. and around the world. They are quite experimental with their drinks and offer drinks like coconut matcha cold brew, pineapple coconut matcha latte, and yuzu dragon fruit green tea. This location serves soft serve too, but I'm not sure if all Junbi locations have it. Junbi also often does drink and merchandise collaborations with popular character companies such as Miffy and most recently, BT21. Since I was at the Waikiki location, I had to go with something tropical to match the vibes and thus tried the GUAVA MATCHA LATTE ($9.75) with light ice and 0% sweetness (note that the guava concentrate that use is pre-sweetened). The GUAVA MATCHA LATTE had a beautiful ombré of pink, green, and white and was as pretty as it was tasty with strong notes of guava and earthy matcha. I'm very glad I went with 0% sweetness as someone who normally gets 30% or 50% sweetness for my boba drinks. The barista was sweet and helpful. I got my drink within 5 minutes after ordering. However, the lid was NOT properly sealed (they vacuum seal a plastic seal onto the plastic cup) and so it spilled and dripped all over my walk down Ala Moana Boulevard to my hotel :( So taking off a service star for that. Prices are obviously steep here, but the drinks are 20-oz as opposed to 16-oz at other matcha locations and they let you do light ice (unlike Maruwa Seicha). Note that there is no designated seating area and so you'll have to take your drink to go on your walk or find a nice park bench somewhere. Workers were helpful in choosing the sweetness levels and giving recommendations. They were also super fast in getting our order out especially with the crowd during december. The drinks however were not that good in my opinion. We were super excited for the BT21 collab but the black sesame was too strong. The matcha and especially the milk green tea was very watery. I think your best bet is to get one of the fruit teas! The place itself is super aesthetically pleasing and cute. During Christmas time there was a huge tree where a lot of people take pictures. Stopped by after dinner for a refreshing pick-me-up. We have wanted to go to this place since it first opened as we have long been fans of this franchise's owners from their YouTube days. It is located under Island Vintage Coffee in the heart of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Junbi serves up creative flavor pairings with their matcha drinks. I ordered the Yuzu Dragonfruit Matcha Cold Brew (50% and regular ice - to share with the wife) and my mother-in-law got a local specialty the Lilikoi Matcha Cold Brew (no sugar added and normal ice). They allow for adjustments on the ice and % of sweetness. I got boba with mine and she got aloe jelly. Both drinks were so bright and refreshing. Mine particularly stood out as it had a great Yuzu flavor on the front end and finished nicely with a strong matcha flavor on the back end. It blended nicely and their boba was soft with a great chew. The drinks came out quickly and the service was excellent. We enjoyed our drinks with the others' desserts at the stage of the Royal Hawaiian with the nighttime lights overhead. Will 100% be coming back during this trip to try more and will make this a spot to routinely visit every time we come back to the island! read more

However, I do think the prices are a bit extreme, being around $9-$10. The strawberry refresher was meh. It tastes sweet and good, but it's essentially watered down strawberry juice. I really wanted the Lilikoi Matcha Cold Brew, but when I went to order at the kiosk, it was flagged as out of stock. As my second choice, I went with the GUAVA MATCHA COLD BREW ($8.88) instead and absolutely loved it. I requested it to be "less sweet" which turned out perfectly... bright and refreshing with a prominent burst of guava flavor. Luckily, I could still taste the matcha for itself, although it was on the more subtle side. This drink was fruity, tropical and perfect for the warm weather. Plus, matcha has its health benefits, so it was a completely guilt-free treat. As much as I loved my drink, the cost of almost $9 seems rather steep, but it could also be partially due to the location in the resort area of Waikiki. Two employees ran the small stand. The one at the register was very personable and offered to enter our orders as opposed to leaving us alone with the kiosk. With so many places opting for a self-service ordering system these days, I appreciated this interaction and his willingness to help. They have a really great corner spot inside of Royal Hawaiian Center, right in the center off the main walkway where people are always taking photos at the pond! Really smart location choice. It's a pain to get to if you don't live/work in central Waikiki and expensive but SOOOOO good! I've had the hojicha latte, strawberry matcha, vanilla matcha, and strawberry green tea. The matcha is a perfect texture and tastes amazing. I'm allergic to dairy and super picky, and usually I hate oat milk as an alternative but they magically make it work somehow! Hojicha latte was great, but I realized that don't like hojicha as much in latte form. I wanted to branch out from my usual and try new things, so I'm happy I tried it once. There's a lot of variety and fun flavors of drinks to choose from! Strawberry green tea was a bit strong the first time I had it, but seems much more balanced now. It seems like they really care about crafting the drinks there. It's crazy to me how I never made the time to try Junbi at home (SoCal) where it all originated, and my first time ended up being in Waikiki! I was so excited to finally try it on vacation. It's located in the Royal Hawaiian Center on the ground floor. I ordered the Lilikoi Matcha Cold Brew ($9.32) because when in Hawaii, I have to choose lilikoi! I had actually never ordered a cold brew matcha anywhere before. I've always chosen to order or make creamy matcha lattes. It was a pleasant and refreshing choice with the sweetness of the passionfruit complementing the matcha which is usually a slight earthy bitterness without sweetener but I actually tasted no earthy bitterness haha. I honestly tasted more fruitiness with a hint of matcha. I didn't mind that since I love fruity drinks so I'm not so sure if it's supposed to be like a 50/50 flavor? Or once you add any sweet, fruit flavor then you def just don't taste matcha? I really need to go to one of my local Junbi locations and try more! My bf ordered a strawberry green tea ($9.19) which is his usual everywhere he goes. He loved how refreshing it also tasted. Junbi is a solid spot for matcha, franchises growing pretty fast. Tends to be on the pricier end though, even among other Junbi (makes sense because of location). This location here is very convenient, between shops and offering a great refresher on all the sunny days. My visit was a while ago, so jealous of the Miffy collab, but their soft serve machine was also down during my visit, so I missed out on double. Taro Vanilla Matcha Latte - real taro does an okay job as a topping! Satisfies the craving of boba. Matcha is always solid and high quality.
