A few things have changed quite a bit since my original review. For one, Tony's is under new…read moremanagement, and the current owner is a truly wonderful, friendly, likeable guy. Secondly, my wife has started working a few shifts here and there, so I've been spending a bit more time here, and my opinion of Tony's has improved significantly as a result. It's still a cash-only bar, but the place has started to take on a Cheers-esque vibe, where everybody knows your name...and each other's, as well. There's a regular crowd of quirky characters from all walks of life who, like stray cats returning to the house that feeds them, can be found here at almost any given hour of the day, and usually hanging out with one another, in some configuration. Drinks remain cheap, and strong, and the bar is much better stocked: even some uncommon cocktails that you can't get at other bars can be mixed up here, such as my favorite, the Rusty Nail (using Drambuie, which few bars seem to stock), so even old curmudgeons like myself can be accommodated. In short, Tony's is a neighborhood bar that has finally started feeling like one, and that's a welcome change. I'm told there are plans for renovations and new features coming in the foreseeable future, which will hopefully will be well-received, and bring in new faces, to join the ragtag band of scoundrels (myself included) that have begun to call this place home.

But this review is for Tony's the Tavern, not Tony's the Garden Center (it is easy to get them confused, like I did). First, the pros: 1. They have very cheap drinks. High balls, low balls, medium balls, beer, they've got it, and they'll get you drunk without breaking the bank. 2. They have Ms. Pacman and the joy stick is in good condition. I think it was just a quarter to play. 3. The pool table is small but in good shape. I ran the table off the break there on February 15, 2020 and immediately retired from pool. So this is a good bar to "Go out on top." 4. The jukebox is cheap and has a great collection from the 50s to 70s. However, if anyone from the staff is listening, can you PLEASE add back "Little Spanish Flea" by Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass? Now, the cons: 1. It is unlikely you will run into anyone that has a full set of teeth. 2. They do not have any of the ingredients to make a Schlitz Cocktail. I asked for one and the bartender had no idea what I was talking about.

It came out well done, (along with the elote "corn ribs", which were pretty dank, admittedly.) I mentioned it to the bartender, and she promptly offered to have it re-made. Cool. Let's do it. 15 minutes later I said to my wife - there's no way it's medium rare if it's taking this long. Lo and behold, another WELL DONE waste of steak, and waste of time. Got it wrapped up to go and decided to call it a night. Got home and realized they gave us blue cheese dressing. Can't catch a win to save my life tonight. These days we seldom go out to eat, and it's a bummer when we can't even get a decently prepared steak on the off chance we do. It was the second time I tried to get steak here, both times it was almost entirely GREY, in spite of clearly requesting medium rare. For the money, it should be done correctly.

I had never been before, but it was a central spot for all of us and the menu looked promising... and it absolutely delivered. The vibe when you walk in is spot on--moody and a little dark, but still well-lit, super clean, and surprisingly spacious. It instantly feels like a place you want to hang out for a while. Service was just as good. Our waiter was attentive, easygoing, and made everything feel relaxed and fun. We ordered the cauliflower, shrimp skewers, fondue, and a basket of fries--every single thing was delicious. But the fries? Next level. Kind of like jojos, but WAY better--crispy, flavorful, and honestly unforgettable. And the Old Fashioned completely stole the show. Easily one of the best I've had. Definitely adding O'Dear to the regular rotation.
