Our guy had been in the lonely hearts club since he had been at the shelter more than 6 months. That meant that his adoption fee was only $20! What a bargain for a dog that has been neutered, had his shots, a microchip & revolution flea & tick medication. If we had found a stray or been given a puppy we would have undoubtedly spent more than $500 on those things. Certainly the shelter is overwhelmed at the moment. The staff is doing the best that they can & most of the staff and volunteers are fostering one or more pets at home in addition to their good work at the shelter.

Just know that they have a lot of people to help, and patience goes a long way! Here are three areas I will comment on: Fostering: The people who work here are very knowledgeable and care about their animals, and the cat were fostering right now is a total gem. Fostering is totally free, and they provide all the materials you need. They don't allow you to meet the animals ahead of time, so definitely be intuitive reading the foster board. Please look at the medical fosters too! Many of them ar totally healthy, like our cat, and are recovering from minor non contagious issues. The one we have is totally friendly and a great cat. Strays: I brought in one a couple months ago and the spca was able to microchip and check him to see if he was neutered. I brought in a second stray yesterday morning and called to check on him and the worker was so personable and we had a long conversation about his health. I was concerned they would be bothered with me calling to check but was surprised to find the total opposite. ALSO - they have pens in the back specifically for anonymous dumps. I absolutely hate when people drop cats off (I live in the city of cville so it happens all the time), but PLEASE take them to the spca instead. You can do so anonymously but it's so much more humane than leaving them on the street. Adoptions: the prices are really reasonable, and while I haven't adopted (yet), I know fostering is a great way to transition into adoption. I'm not sure theyre doing meets with the animals because of covid, but fostering is a free way to see if the animal fits in your house and you can adopt at any time. Overall, I love the SPCA and would always get a dog or cat from here rather than a breeder.

It has been two full years since he set foot on the property, but can still give details regarding the time we spent volunteering for this organization. Mary and her amazing staff run a tight ship, putting the care of a few hundred animals first in their lives. The facility is clean and cheerful, and there is no sadness seen in the eyes of the many many creatures that call this facility home. Dogs are kept one to two to a fenced run, and are walked daily by a long list of paid staff and volunteers. Cats are kept in two separate buildings, according to need. They have fewer volunteers, but those that come can easily find themselves buried in one kitty pile after another while grooming and socializing the cat population. Caring for Creatures is a no kill shelter, and they work hard to find the perfect adoptive families for their animal charges. We knew quite a few families who had adopted from CfC, and all sang Mary's praises. If you have some spare time or money, a donation to Caring for Creatures would be a fine way to spend what you can. They are a deserving organization.

Pam stopped us to let us know about another kitten who had just become available that day. We waited for the adoption room to become available and for the staff to bring him in. They told us he was super playful and sweet, but not much of a cuddler. As soon as we held him, he settled right in and just purred away! We knew right away he was the one! The staff were so kind in helping us find him and get the paperwork done. He's made himself at home and while he loves to cuddle, he super playful and frisky!

We had made an appointment to look at a particular dog, but decided against adopting him.. Instead, we adopted a wee girl, Sandra, who was just over three months old.....We were allowed to "introduce" our German Shepherd (both a "mix" and a "rescue") to "Sandra" and the lady who was assisting us was patient and helpful to us, as the two dogs were introduced. Some folks don't seem to know that dogs may react positively or negatively when first introduced......it takes a bit of time to do it properly. We are pleased to say that In only a week, "Sandra", who is now "Jo-Jo" has adapted very well to our home and has become great friends and playmates with "Hailie", the German Shepherd. The staff was so helpful and accommodating -- they worked around my schedule and made everything feel smooth and stress-free. What really stood out to me was the follow-up. They checked in to make sure the adjustment was going well, which meant so much. You can tell they truly care about the animals and the families they're placing them with. I absolutely love my puppy -- she has been such a wonderful addition to our family. I'm so grateful for the support and kindness we received throughout the process. Highly recommend!

DO NOT USE THIS RESCUE! I have been trying to get in contact with them to receive vaccination…read moredocuments to pass onto my vet and they STILL have not provided me with anything. I was told I would receive it in my email upon adopting, and that they would mail hard copies in the next week (still havent recieved 4 weeks later). My vet got in touch with the rescue this evening and were informed my dog, that I adopted April 10, will need all her vaccines again since they expire May 23. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS RESCUE...they should NOT be adopting dogs out knowing all the vaccines expire in 6 weeks without informing the new owners!
