A few weeks back, me and my boyfriend were at Ben's BBQ on North Avenue and another customer suggested we also give Coleman's a try. Tonight we did just that. We'll be back at Ben's next time. Coleman's is a TINY place and there were about 20 people packed int he shop, all waiting on food. And all crabbing about how long it takes. And it does take a long time. We wanted to have ribs but they didn't have any. How does a BBQ place which has been in business forever, run out of ribs? I mean, the sign says "Ribs and Tips" but they don't have ribs. Christ, how hard it is to have ribs when that is what you sell? We ended up ordering Rib Tips and Chicken Wings, or "tips & wings". We ordered fries well done, no BBQ sauce on the fries, but sauce on the tips and wings. An order of coleslaw, as there is a big sign suggesting we try the new slaw. Okee dokee, I'll do that. We also ordered extra BBQ sauce on the side, which we were charged for. Wait half and hour for the food, the entire time, the lobby is filling up faster than you can imagine. And people keep coming in trying to pick up orders. And some of the people are getting angry because they called orders in and "why call it in if I have to wait?". We get back to his place (the boyfriend) and sit down to dinner. Skimpy portions, fries barely cooked so we tossed them in the bin. NO extra BBQ sauce. Cole slaw tasted like MILDEW. So disgusting!!! One bite and I almost lost it. I mean how effing hard is it to serve fresh coleslaw? Rib tips had great flavor, but meat was really crappy quality. Nice job smoking, good sauce but really heavy vinegar (I choked a few times). But that meat was real crap. And the wings were dry and overcooked but greazy, and didn't have any sauce on them. If you're too busy to get my order right, you must not want my biz. Next time, we'll know better and go back to Ben's. Sorry Coleman's, but crappy meat and mildewed coleslaw is a deal breaker. read more

Been eating this bbq literally for decades. I like the food but I've seen the portion sizes decrease as the price increased. If you're eating rib tips get them cut thin so you get less bone and fat. I always get them sauced with mixed mild and hot sauce. The neighborhood IS poorer than some are used to but I've never had any problems other than men trying to flirt (young ones). As others have said some window staff can be nasty and have a bad attitude but most are just a bit slow and have been working long hours on their feet. read more

This is my favorite takeout restaurant. The chicken is cooked perfectly and the rib tips are tender and juicy. The bbq sauce is always consistent. Just order from the catering menu. Enough rib tips for 50 and 100 chicken wings. The order was ready at the time stated. This is a must try place. read more

I believe in Chicago for over 20 years and have been visiting Coleman's chicken and barbecue often oh because I live in Arizona now when I travel to Chicago I usually go to Coleman's when I get off the plane to visit family. But on my recent visit to Coleman's was the worse food I've ever gotten from them, I think they should be shame on their selves with the flaky attitudes at that time when I went to their location, the individuals that were behind the counter serving people were very ignorant and rude. This is a warning to anyone going to the Chicago Avenue location at a certain time of the day the food really sucked at the spending $25 on food that was not even worth it. I would've been better off going to Denny's or somewhere else to spin my money. This is a buyer beware problem of food that sucked big time along with attitudes at that location. Not good of serving the community there and people spend their heart money, for that Beware of this place at certain times of the day. read more

This place is down right scary, but their rib tips are fantastic! Two blocks east of Austin, close to Oak Park, yeah, it's not a good neighborhood. The food and workers are protected by a wall and there's standing room only for the customers. It's worth the risk. The sauce is easily better than Robinson's. The tips are ladled over fries and a piece of white bread soaks up the good stuff on the bottom. I've never been bothered by anyone in the neighborhood and they're open until 2am. read more

I live nowhere near the location of Coleman's (used to be 2 locations but only 1 now) but happened to be in the area after visiting a friend and decided to treat myself. The last time I tried to get food from here was on Labor Day 2014 and by mid-afternoon, their ribs were sold out. Have wanted some ever since. When I got there on a Friday, the line to order was like one I've never seen. Standing room only. I started to turn around but I really wanted their ribs. Why? Because they are the BEST! I ordered a slab of ribs. They told me it would be a half hour. I wanted to cry - it was after 8 p.m. and I was ready to go home but I waited for my food. Why? Because they are the BEST! It did take the entire 30 minutes but what I got was juicy, meaty ribs with yummy sauce that includes fries and bread. Will I be back? Of course I will! Thanks Coleman's - you are still as good as when my late Daddy used to bring us your BBQ back in the 80's. read more

No one shouldn't have to wait over an hour to just pick up some food. I called in my order and was told it would be ready in 30 minute. Being familiar with the pace of service, I came in 40 minutes. I waited in line, another 15 minutes. Get inside the place, another 25+ minutes. I was told at least twice, "your order is coming up". Give the lady my card to take my payment, it took 5 minutes to hand it back because she's answering the phones to take orders. Please get more organized, just be honest about how long it'll take, get a food warmer, have a more organized line for customers for to pick up or place order, get a Square Card reader machine so people can pay on the spot (it's it's like $50) people who order in advance should not have to wait in line just to go inside and pay, yall need to do tickets or something like they do in a grocery store. This place is a must if you in the Chicago area especially the west side where it's located. The prices are inexpensive and the food is good. I remember eating Coleman's barbecue ( Coleman's #1) growing up on the west side in mid 80's. I would go get me a bag of fries for fifty cents and a large bag for a dollar if I was really splurging... lol. I would let the nice lady pinch my cheeks and I believe I got a few more fries for my trouble. Whenever I'm in town visiting, Coleman's is definitely one of my first stops. Went there this afternoon. Had a real taste for some real bbq, and I got it. The problem is, the ordering and pick up window confusion. I stood in the wrong line for at least 10 minutes until I was told which line I should be in. (PUT SOME SIGNS UP) I firmly believe if they had people dedicated to the order window and the pick up window the service would be much better. I have move to the oak park area and found this treasure of a BBQ house. I personally get the wing dinners (since I don't eat pork) and the wings are amazing. If your looking for good food by the family owned chain then look no further! They also have an amazing mild sauce that def gives Harolds a run for their money! If your in the oak park/Chicago area this is a must! The only thing better than the food is the price! Although there is no indoor seating to eat, due to the location it's probably for the best. read more

Decent for the Northside I been eating here my whole life last night drove 30 miles to pick up a to go order 11:00 pm my bill was $91 ok great not really after I got there they told me they don't accept fifthys and hundred dollar bills all I had was two fifthys and one hundred dollar bill they wouldn't take it probly 6 or 7 other people they're were in the same boat they was very rude to the customers last night so I walked out and drove to leons rip tips wich is way better any way was treated like a normal person and guess what same exact order was only $65 at leons where they had absolutely no issue in making change for a hundred I'm not sure where in this location they would expect there customers to get change for a hundred late at night I will not eat here again go to LEONS FAMOUS RIBS better food better prices great customer care read more

Colemans # 2 is like a staple for BBQ on the Westside of Chicago. I was not disappointed. When I lived in Oak Park,and Forrest Park I used to make it by there. The RibTips and the Steakburger is what I always got back then and that's what I got again...and 7 wings with Mild Sauce. Nothing's changed except that They've improved!!... I was bombarded with and extreme taste for some rib tips, and not just any but Coleman's rib tips. So I decided to go ahead and stop by here. And let me tell you I was excited about these tips, I am by no means a big rib person at all. But having had this craving for days, I realized the only way it would go away was to go ahead and have some. And I was not disappointed at all, they were just like I remember, delicious. The lady that waited in me when I placed my order was very nice which is a step up for them. Because from my past experience customer service was never one of their strong suits. They would take care of their friends before anyone standing in line. In addition, their large tip combos is small! If you want what you pay for...go to Mary's on Pulaski and fifth! I've been going to Coleman's since I was a kid and fries with mild sauce were 60 cents! 1980's, that seems like a lifetime ago. I lived over there for 33 plus years and I have to say Chicago Avenue is not the safest spot, but it's not the worst either. I've seen it get better then worse, so If you can catch a park in front of the door, you can get in and out. Best thing to do is call your order in and it should be ready when they say, but don't wait too late, they stop taking call-ins after a certain time. I love their food and the prices, although have gone up, still aren't bad compared to other places. It's worth traveling back to my old hood for good eats! read more

I came here at the recommendation of my cousin. I ordered small tips (which came with fries) and an extra fry with mild sauce. I wasn't hungry when I ordered but was heading to the airport and wanted a snack. I ate it all! The sauce was delicious. The tips were fatty which is not uncommon, but I wanted more meat. Went here yesterday and got the tips and link combo. It was very good but the liks was cut paper thin! Maybe this is how it's done now but I'm not use to a link cut three to four times. I could slide the links in between my teeth, they were that thin. There is another place up near Lake Street and there tips are the same way. read more

I grew up on Colemans everyone claims Harold's has the best fried chicken but they have no idea what they're missing.

I went there today 4:30 and they were already out of rib tips and said it would be a 2 hour wait. I bought coleslaw and when I got home I didn't have it. 2nd time that I've gone there and they always forget something. Tried calling and could not get through. They have horrible customer service and they could care less how long you have to wait. Very disappointed. read more

Favorite place, hands down, to get chicken with mild sauce! I don't think this place gets enough credit for their mild sauce, they're so overshadowed by Uncle Remus and Harold's. But this small shack on the west side holds it's own when it comes to chicken. Their ribs can be amazing, but sometimes they're burnt and not really "meaty," that's my only complaint. Be warned: if you call in, don't expect a friendly, energetic voice over the phone, unless it's the guy that's standing over the stoves preparing the food. He's awesome! He works so hard, but is still very polite to customers and keeps a pleasant demeanor. Tip: Prepare for a wait if you visit on the weekend. You'll get your food a lot faster if you go during a weekday, especially during the afternoon. read more
