Small place in the South End, fairly empty. Not that much in stock. We called ahead because the website explicitly said to do so, but that was unnecessary and instead seemed to confuse the folks working there. The pastries and quiche were all pretty good. The croissant was buttery and flakey, and the Pain Swiss was creamy and rich. We also got a Croque Monsieur, which was quite disappointing. They're pre-made and sit out, and warming it up didn't really help (nor did it make it very warm). I would not recommend it. If you're in the mood for a sweet, stop by. The departure of this bakery space's previous tenant was a tragedy, but Colette's presence is such a joy! They have a wide variety of pastries and breads, and they also serve coffee and tea. Then my white husband came in right after me, and she suddenly smiled and said Hello and welcomed him loudly. This new location of Colette Bakery is an absolute gem to have in the neighborhood. The team working there is friendly and their food is so delicious. I got a croissant (to compare to other neighborhood croissants) and it was perfectly flaky and buttery. I also got a viennois (which are hard to find at most other French bakeries in the US) and a lemon tart. They were both absolutely perfect and made me feel like I was back in France!! The prices here are also very appropriate... I've found that other bakeries will charge $7 for a croissant which I honestly just refuse to pay, but here everything is so delicious and the right price! Unfortunately, Colette's quality has gone dowhill a lot since their initial year or two in Medford. The croisstants are not flaky, and the bread is just okay. I'm a tough customer having lived half the year in France for more than 15 years. The bakery in the South End is in my neighborhood and I was anxious to give it a try. I decided to start with the baguette. To my astonishment, it was great! As good as in my village if not better--crispy on the outside with just right amount of mouth-feel inside. Honestly, it made my day. The young woman who helped me was welcoming, knowledgeable about the differences in the breads they offered and when I passed on the Flammkuchen was happy to just ring me up for the bread. I totally felt welcomed back. As for ambience, It's kind of bare bones inside. There is outdoor space, but it is just a few tables, chairs and few umbrellas.
