I had not owned or really ridden a bike since middle school (now over 30 years old). Bikes are in a bit of short supply lately, but I was able to purchase directly on the Giant website (Talon 1). Takoma Bicycle assembled and delivered my bike straight to my house. Jon called me and arranged for delivery on the same day he finished assembling! He then texted me when he was 10 minutes away. The transaction was quick and easy - he talked to me about the bike a bit and I was all set! Bike comes with a year of free adjustments...but I have not used those yet. I haven't ever set foot inside Takoma Bicycle, but I will be coming here for all my repair or tune-up needs in the future. The staff here is VERY friendly and Bruce (the owner) was extremely responsive via email. I've seen some Yelp users complaining about small selection...but goodness gracious do you guys know that Takoma Park lends itself to SMALL businesses? Sure...if you want a big warehouse go to the other shops in the region...but I get the sense that what Takoma lacks in stock they easily make up for in customer service. I like that they have a 3D rendering of the shop on their website as well! read more

I wanted a bike immediately and found this place online and went to see if they have any. I found one that I liked and they set it up in the next one hour and gave it to me. They were very friendly and they have nice collection. They said they do not have any riding groups though, which was disappointing. But the over all experience was pleasant. read more

Like many, I wanted to buy a bike in mid-2020 but couldn't find one anywhere due to high demand in the midst of quarantine. However, Takoma Bicycle had a few bikes! I ended up buying one, but it ended up being too large for me, so I was able to exchange it right away. Crazily enough, because I'm indecisive, I ended up making another exchange. Bruce was calm and helpful throughout this, and allowed me to walk home with a bike I'm ultimately happy with. He also removed the lights and rack I had on my old bike and fitted them on my new one. It's hard to find an honest bike shop. This one is. Another bike shop gave me a $300 estimate to fix my bike. I took it in here and they had me out with a brand-new feeling bike for $100. One of the mechanics even told me something couldn't be fixed and Bruce took a few minutes to do it himself when he saw it. This place is a gem and feel exactly like a neighborhood place. Five stars! As everyone knows who has owned a bicycle in DC, finding an honest bike repair shop is harder than finding an honest used car salesman. After several bad experiences elsewhere, I decided to try Takoma Bicycle for a major repair (broken axle). A different place had opined that I would need a new wheel ($200). Bruce took a look and said he would see if the axle could be replaced, or if I would need a new wheel. I appreciated his honesty. He asked if I would leave the bike there until tomorrow, and I was happy to do so. To my surprise, I got a text a few hours later saying the bike was ready to go! Bruce was able to replace just the axle, and I was out the door for $35. He also oiled my chain and cable just to be nice. Huge thank you to Bruce and everyone at Takoma Bicycle Shop! read more

I've only been to Takoma Bicycle once, and haven't even seen the inside of the store, but was so impressed that I immediately wanted to give them five stars. The shop is currently open for business but implementing impressive COVID restrictions with all-outdoors repairs (masked, of course). This works well for a bike shop regardless as it's easy and efficient to just pull up front and have your bike worked on. I had badly damaged handlebar pads and had purchased the replacements myself but needed help with installation. Having previously been quoted $30+ for this swap I had held off, but the staff at TB was able to take care of the switch in minutes and inspect my brakes (oil was added throughout to help them run more smoothly) for the low total of $10. In and out this took about six minutes. Great service and I'll be going back for any future repair needs. read more

This a good shop with good mechanics. I brought my bike that had been turned away from one shop because they didn't know how to do the work, and from another because they did the work wrong, and these guys took care of it and fixed it properly. They also told me what was up and told me that if their fix didn't cover it after 60 miles to bring it back and they'd fix it for free. It's hard to find a good shop. I think this is a good one and I'll take my 3 of my bikes here for service. read more

Nice little bike shop! The vibe of Takoma park runs deep here too, which is to say it has some nice charm. Local owned shop. Been here for 7 years and everyone I talked to here was very warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable. I also very much appreciated the fact that when I showed them my "beater bike" they didn't immediately tell me all the repairs that I think other bike shops would. I like that they were honest and told me the basic things that would be needed rather than everything that could possibly be replaced. They were also very knowledgeable about their accessories like lights, lube, pedals, etc. I would come back for a tune-up or other repairs. read more

I normally don't go to Takoma Park at all and there's even a bike shop near where I live. However, Takoma Bicycle's great reviews convinced me to go here and I'm glad I did! So many people on bikes around this quaint town, and the staff at the shop (customers too!) are so friendly. I had an issue with my brakes (problem 1) and this brought me to the store. Generally, to transport my bike, I remove the front tire and put the bike in the trunk. However, in doing so I then lost one of the parts that holds the tire to the bike (problem 2: now the tire won't stay on bike securely). When I arrived, Bruce patiently walked me through the proper way to remove my tire and put it back on in order for it to be secure and stable. Turns out, brakes were fine, the way I was previously putting the tire on was causing the brake issue. Facepalm. He also just gave me the part since it was a spare "extra." My bike was fixed, and I learned more about my bike in 10 minutes! Thanks Bruce! Bottom line is that I would come back in a heartbeat and would recommend them! read more

I thought my tires were totally destroyed. I went to Takoma Bicycle. First - there was no line to have my bike looked at. They looked at them and pumped them full of air and there were no leaks. I went in with a sick bike and couple days later took home my (son's) bike fully restored (and oiled!). The gentlemen even carried my bike out the shop and down the steps for me. Took my bike last week to get it tuned, the bike brakes were squishy, brakes were rubbing the tire rims, and the gears were a mess. I got it back and my gosh what a difference! there are gears I didn't even know I had and the brakes are perfect. Rides like buttaahhh! They also did a safety check and fixed a few minor things all for an unbelievably low price. They had it ready for me in 3 days, although when i went to pick it up they had a sign up that they weren't taking new tune ups due to increased demand. Phew so glad I got my bike in. I really hate to write a review with such disparity from the majority of other Yelpers, but with that said, I feel the need to share my personal honest experience with Takoma Bicycle. About six weeks ago, I visited the shop looking for a new bicycle. I hadn't owned one since I was a kid, and was recommended to them by a friend. "They're really nice, knowledgeable, and have a good selection of hybrids to start off with at good prices," I'd been told. I was immediately greeted by some friendly faces and felt like the experience was going to go well. They set me up with a Giant Escape 2, and I gave it a test ride. The bike rode well, but the front wheel was squealing really badly. I told them about the problem, and they said they'd adjust it. I took it around the block, and it stopped squealing, from what I could tell. I bought it on the spot, and they gave it a final adjustment and inspection. "We offer free break-in adjustments," the salesman told me, "just bring it back in after a few weeks so we can tighten everything up and take care of any problems that might come up during the break-in period." I was told that if the squealing brake were to return, to just bring it back in. I rode the bike home, and within the first mile, the squeal returned. I'm not talking about a slight whistle-- it was screeching, even with light pressure. "Maybe this is normal during a break-in, so I'll just bring it back later," I said to myself, continuing to ride home. Two rides later, with a screeching brake barking back every time I summoned its presence, I was back at the shop. The tech told me it was because my front wheel wasn't properly mounted in the fork. I hadn't touched the quick release or wheel since I bought it. First red flag: why was my wheel improperly mounted in the fork? Was it because I had put about 15 light miles on it, or was it because it wasn't properly inspected before it left the shop? Anyway, he told me he'd also adjust the toe-in on the front brakes (for newbies: this is the angle at which the brake pads strike the rim, which prevents squealing), and off I went. All was well until less than a mile in, and guess what? SCRREEEEEEEEEECH! I was infuriated because I had to be home quickly and couldn't go back and demand someone else to look at it again. A much-needed international vacation and a few weeks later, and I was back at the shop. What caused it this time? "Must be the humidity. We have a few "tricks" we can pull to get the brake to be quiet." Right. Sense a pattern, yet? Yes, on my way home, after the THIRD trip to the shop, the front brake on my bike was again possessed, determined to howl at me until I either threw the bike into a ditch and blew it up or checked myself into an insane asylum. I decided to take matters in to my own hands. "If I can tear apart a car and put it back together, I think I can figure out what's wrong with a stupid bicycle..." First came the obligatory reading and research, since brakes are kind of important. Then, out came the wrenches. The first thing I noticed was that the brakes weren't properly toed-in. That was the first thing I fixed. Then I realized that the cantilevers were far off-center. So I adjusted the springs. Then I couldn't get the brake cable back on. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that Takoma Bicycle had adjusted the length of the brake cable by way of the anchor bolt that holds it tight, and in the process, completely stripped the bolt and didn't bother to mention it or replace it. Fortunately, I know how to get stripped bolts out, but once I removed it, I noticed the brake cable was frayed and crushed. Reusing it was out of the question. Considering how furious I was at that point, I'd have rather trashed the bike before giving any more of my hard-earned money to Takoma Bicycle, so I sourced another shop for the parts I needed. Of course, the anchor bolt for my specific bike wasn't in stock at this new shop, but one of the mechanics was nice enough to take the time and make me a new bolt. Armed with my new parts in hand, I went home, ready to finish the job once and for all. Installation was simple. I took it out. I rode it hard. It was humid. I braked, and braked, and braked some more. I tested emergency stops and gentle stops. Guess what? I fixed it. If you're still reading this, I applaud you. By now, you'd probably assume I'd never spend another dime at this store. You'd also probably figure that I don't think their techs either know what they're doing, or care enough to take the time to do a job right. You'd be correct. I was patient with them during this entire process and gave them plenty of slack. Sometimes, people make mistakes. But at some point, enough is enough. The main takeaway is this: Takoma Bicycle screwed up the brakes on my brand-new bicycle after THREE failed attempts at fixing a minor problem, and I personally had to clean up their mess. Don't make my mistake-- do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. read more

This is what a neighborhood shop should be. I only went in there to buy an inner tube for my mountain bike, but after talking to the guy a little while and watching him interact with other customers while I browsed the store, I realized that this guy was really about getting people on bikes the way they wanted. He wasn't trying to sell you the latest and greatest carbon fiber/unobtanium/adamantium time attack bike from Trek. He wanted you to get what you wanted you to have the best value, period. I walked out with two tires and two tubes that have vastly improved my commute to work over the much-too-knobby tires that came with my bike. Don't expect the shop to be a warehouse of this year's releases. It has lots of bikes that will work with the casual commuter. He also seems to have some used bikes for those that are looking to save a little cash. Right by the metro. You can't complain. read more

We wanted to buy buys for our nieces who live in Silver Spring but we live in CA. Sent emails and Bruce emailed us back with lots of great info. The only shop in the area that responded. So once we got to town this was our first and last stop to buy a couple of bikes for 2 13 yr old girls! With Fred & Bruce's help we found the bike styles and type in the price range we wanted. Sean set us up for the test ride, found the color for the bike the girls wanted and they even got a lesson from Fred on how to take off/on the front tire. I bought a used bike here for a good price (the positive Yelp reviews wooed me away from Craigslist). I've enjoyed bike commuting on it, and the staff were friendly. Lots of the customers appear to be little kids getting a first bike. Didn't realize the used bike I bought had a chain that was almost shot until a week later, after some struggles shifting and the chain coming off. However, when I brought it back the staff took care of it (new chain and new cassette) at no charge. Moral is - if you buy a used bike, be smarter than me about inspecting it closely at first - but also, Takoma seem like a dedicated, hardworking operation and I appreciated their fixing the bike for free. read more

This is an excellent bike shop in Takoma Park. I bought a commuter bike here a few weeks ago, at a fair price- and it was a lot more affordable than some of the trendy bike shops in DC. And 2 days later when my brand new bike tire popped on its inaugural commute into work, I was disappointed. However, I took it back and they replaced the tire on the spot, and were helpful in fixing the bike seat and installing a kick-stand, and gratis. Many DC-area bike mechanics are excellent, and Takoma Bicycle is no exception. They're fast, friendly, and knowledgable. There is a nice, neighborly vibe here, and they offer a range of products and expertise- everything from helping kids get their first bike to assisting seasoned riders with their road bikes. read more

Good: Great local bike shop, especially with the new renovation! The prices are actually pretty competitive to places like amazon and even if it's a few dollars more I feel good helping out a local business. Room for improvement: I am pretty sure with the new renovation quite a bit of new staff got hired. Unfortunately, as expected, new staff are not as knowledgeable about products and/or services. If we could clone Bruce a few times that would be best, but until that happens hopefully Bruce will impart a big piece of his knowledge and experience to the rest of his group. read more

This is a wonderful Bicycle shop. I came here twice for bike repairs. The first time was a couple of years ago to change the tubes on my TREK 7500 HYBRID and most recently two days ago after I tried to replace the stem on my Giant ocr c2 road bike at home and failed to remove the cap on the original stem. I came to the shop late in the afternoon, no appointment as I had a bike party the following day. They were able to mount the stem and put a spacer in less than an hour, eventhough I've forgotten the part I bought and had to run back home. The young man not only did a great job on my bike, adjusting the height and the seat...etc, but was very courtuous and helped me unload my broken part from the car. I've been to other bike shops in the area over the years but can't recomend this shop enough. Outstanding service, unbeatable prices. read more

I'm a daily bike commuter, and have been very pleased with the competent and friendly service at Takoma Bicycle. They are so refreshing after the 'cooler than thou' attitude I became so accustomed to at bike shops in dc. I blew a cable on the way home from work one day. When I got home I called Takoma Bicycle and they said I could leave the bike locked to their front porch on my way to work (before they open). I got a call around noon; they talked me through the problems with my ride, a jamis coda comp, and explained what needed to be repaired right away and what could wait. Then they quoted a very reasonable price. The bike was all ready and good as new when I picked it up that evening. This all happened three months ago, and I've had no problems since then, so the work was done well. read more

So I figure it will not hurt to check it out. So I took my kid there to look for a used bike. The Sean was super nice and we felt welcome and at ease at the store. I took my road bike there the next day for a minor adjustment. The mechanic gladly took a look at it and fixed it in few minutes for free. I was quite disappointed with my experience here. My son had just finished the iCan Bike camp and had gotten unsteadily up on two wheels for the first time on Friday morning, but the camp staff told us that the bike we had brought, which they initially thought was OK, was not working well for him. They recommended a Giant Moto from Takoma Bikes, and we went in on Saturday morning to buy one. While their computer showed two in stock, they couldn't find them and said they might have to order one. It would take "a couple of days, or maybe not even that if we can find the ones we're supposed to have." On Tuesday, I got a call that the bike was ready, followed 15 minutes later by a call saying, no, actually it wouldn't be ready until tomorrow. Not a big deal for me, but the bike is for a 10 year-old who was pretty excited to get it. It wasn't until Friday that I got a call that the bike was really ready, so we went in on Saturday as soon as Google said they were open at 9:00. Unfortunately the Google listing was wrong; they don't open until 10:00. I took the 30 seconds necessary to correct this while we waited. When the "open" lights finally went on, we had to wait for them to clear the display bikes out of the shop so they could reach the bike, which as it turned out did not have the iCan Bike spotting handle I had left a week previous. When this was located, the clerks debated on how one was supposed to put it on. When this was finally done -- though with a bit of a rattle -- they went to ring me up. "Don't you want to fit it to him?" I asked. Not really important for a kids' bike, I was told. The argument for your local bike shop is supposed to be service, but I would have got better service at REI, and wouldn't have had to hunt for scarce metered parking that I had to feed while I was made to wait. read more

Lovely shop, in a cool area. Especially impressed by the wide range of accessories, reflecting management's belief that cycling is for everyone from high-ticket enthusiasts and business commuters to young people and those relying on a sturdy bike as their principal mode of transportation. So why hold back on five stars? Uneven service. Perfectly nice people, capable of normal jobs. But when I visited, they said my frame is bent when it was not. That's a major mistake, and cost me a few weeks of riding. Keep on coming but when in doubt, call for the owner instead who's a lot better at making an important call like this. read more

I was quite willing to leave my bike, didn't expect in-the-moment service; was told that they couldn't even accept any more bikes because they were overloaded. This should not be a customer's problem; clearly the manager does not have or assign enough staff. I suspect that the good reviews bring in business - usually so ! - but the shop is resting on its past laurels.
