Such a wonderful little place! We were so fortunate that someone did not show up for their reservation and we were able to get a table. This dinner was such a delight to all of us. We had the traditional spaghetti which was robust and delicious. But the veal.... one of the most amazing dishes EVER. It's a "milk" veal that is cooked for 8 hours. The most tender, scrumptious piece of meat paired with creamy mashed potatoes. The desserts were also quite note worthy: the tiramisu was the best we have ever tasted. We got SO lucky! This restaurant lured us in with the reviews on Yelp. But we couldn't book a reservation because we did not have international phone service and once we were in Rome, they were fully booked a week out! However, we popped by to check it out as we were heading back to our hotel after a long day of sightseeing. It just so happened that some people did not show and they were happy to have us fill those spots! We had to wait a few minutes but it was more than well-worth it! The prices were unbelievable for the quality of food! I had the pumpkin gnocchi and my husband had the pumpkin ravioli. We split the veal with the sauce. The pillowiness of my gnocchi left me moaning in pleasure (along with the perfectly flavored cream sauce). And the truffles!!!! (Check out my pics!) Family owned restaurant tucked away on a side street near the Spanish Steps. Amazing fresh pasta made every morning (you can see it in the window) - the best we found in Rome! A reservation is highly recommended but you can get lucky if you show up right when they open either for lunch or again for dinner. The restaurant seemed pretty hectic but all the diners looked very happy. We ordered the tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms, spinach & ricotta ravioli with butter & sage sauce, and the duck l'orange. Our cousins who are from Rome chose this restaurant for us last night. We came to visit them after 8 years of not seeing them. We knew it had to be good. Get reservations - it's not a huge place. A family-run place, our server was telling us "my mom makes it so good..." There's something so awesome about that - that's my kind of restaurant. The waiter took time to explain the menu both in English for us, and Italian for our cousins, so double duty! Here's what he recommended: * TAGLIATELLE BOLOGNESE (4/5) My daughter's dish. She had no complaints. I tasted it and it didn't blow me away but the pasta was freshly homemade, how dare I criticize. * TRIANGLES OF RICOTTA CHEESE, CHARD AND SAUSAGE (5/5) Thankfully, this was my dish, tender triangular pockets of ricotta mixed with the chard and sausage. Perfect on every level. * GIAMBONETTO OF VITELLA WITH PUREE (5/5) (Milk-braised veal with mashed potatoes) Wow, what an interesting dish. Never heard or seen anything like this. Kudos to the chef who conceived this idea and put this together, the meat braised just perfectly with the sauce. I get the feeling that you can't go wrong in this place with any order. Ah the first meal on my trip.....of course you are going to seek out one of the best pasta spots in Rome. It's been here since 1931 and run by the same family since 1967. Located in a quiet little alley way, fresh pasta for the night is on display in their window work station for all to see. Yelp did warn me about the lines that form, and they were right. We stayed at an Apartment right next door and would see the lines every night. It's a small restaurant that opens for dinner at 7:30. If you don't have a reservation, you most likely aren't getting in for the 1st seating and will have to wait a good hour or more. Since they don't have online reservations, I tried to get reservations calling from the US. While they spoke English in person, they weren't about to waist their busy time translating on the phone and hung up on me. I'm totally ok with that by the way, I'm not going to be one of those Americans who expect Italians to speak English. So I would say if you can't make reservations by phone in Italian, then book the place after you arrive, perhaps in person. I'm sure a few days out, you can get a reservation unless you want prime time on Friday or Sat night. And lunch may be easier. On to the food. Come for the pasta....stay for the pasta. Pasta was 5 stars here for sure, and if I had to do it all over again, I would order 2 Primi pasta dishes, rather than ordering a Secondi meat course. Here's the run down.. Fried Porcini Mushrooms - These had a very mild breading and were all about the flavor of the mushroom itself. The dipping sauce was pretty forgettable though and not necessary. 3 stars Antipasto Colline Emiliane - This is a sampler platter of all of their Charcuterie. Everything was delicious. Of special note was the mousse made from Mortadella, My baloney has a first name it's...M-o-r-t-a-d-e-l-l-a, My baloney has a second name it's....M-o-u-s-s-e. (If they read this review that will be lost in translation for sure). 4.5 stars. Tagliatelle alla bolognese - about as simple as you can get, and absolutely wonderful. The meat sauce didn't overpower the fresh pasta at all. It was my favorite of the pasta dishes I sampled. 5 stars Spinach and Ricotta filled Ravioli in Sage Butter Sauce. Again the sauce is enhancing the beautiful stuffed pasta and not in any way covering it up. So often the Americanized versions of these dishes, the pasta itself is an afterthought....just something to seal up around the ravioli filling or to mop up a bunch of sauce. Here the pasta is the star and I found each dish balanced. I think this is usually served with a tomato sauce, but they gave my wife the option of Sage Butter Sauce - 5 stars Pumpkin filled Ravioli in Sage Butter Sauce. I read a lot of great reviews on this dish, so I knew I was going to order it. It was however my least favorite of the 3 pasta dishes and was on the sweet side. I guess I was expecting the pumpkin to be treated more like a butternut squash and have a savory/sweet thing going on, but it was just sweet. It still was a good dish, but I would get something else, unless you are looking for a sweet flavor profile. 4 stars. Milk Braised Veal with Mashed Potato. Boiled meats seem to be a thing here. Perhaps if this is something you've grown up with, I can see it being a comfort food, but it didn't do much for me as a first timer to this dish. I'm sure it's a good version of the dish though. 3.5 stars Fried veal cutlet topped with Ham and Cheese. This was kind of salty. Like veal cordon bleu. Not really a favorite of the table. 3 stars Fried Meatballs with mashed potato. The mashed potato was on the side by the way, but these meatballs did have the outside coating like Cuban Papa Rellenas. It was all meat inside, and we had a disagreement at the table if we liked the texture. Definitely not your standard American ground beef/pork/veal meatball. But that's ok, why do you want something just like home. That said, even though I found myself defending them, they were just ok and I didn't understand the sweet dipping sauces that were served with them. 3 stars. Our meal picked up again to 5 star status with the desserts. Lemon Meringue Pie - this is not to be missed. They get a real nice crust on the meringue. And the lemon custard is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. 5 stars Tiramisu with wild strawberries - a different take on tiramisu was welcomed with beautiful in season wild strawberries. 4.5 stars Wild strawberry torte - even more of those little strawberries with custard on a rich buttery crust. Dining in Italy has generally been a lovely experience until my dinner at Colline Emiliane. Having dined at many restaurants in Rome and others cities in Italy and Europe, my wife and I are accustomed to waitstaff who are friendly, eager to explain the dishes on the menu, and who allow patrons to linger and enjoy the dining experience. In fact, the slow pace at which dinner is served in Europe as compared to the U.S. is one of the most pleasurable aspects of dining in Italy. Throw all of that out the window when you dine at Colline Emiliane. The restaurant was crowded when my wife and I arrived and a gentleman who was a non-Italian asked if we had reservations. He then informed another gentlemen who clearly was Italian and who appeared to be the maître d' or host that we had arrived. The "host" politely sat us at our table and from there, the experience went straight into the tank. It turned out that the non-Italian gentleman was our waiter. When we asked him for the house specialties, he pointed to several items on the menu without explaining any of them. So we ordered 2 pasta dishes and a main explaining that we wanted them served in 3 courses split between my wife and me. He took our order and within 10 to 15 minutes the two pasta dishes were delivered. Within 10 to 15 minutes of finishing the pasta plates, the main dish was served. We ordered a dessert which felt like it was delivered via Federal Express. Within the first 5 minutes of eating our dessert, our waiter checked to see if we were done. The table was cleared and the check delivered to our table all within 10 minutes of our waiter delivering dessert. He then proceeded to ask us to leave the table as soon as possible as the restaurant was crowded. WTF (my internal reaction)! We were in that restaurant no more than an hour whereas others who had been seated before us were barely finishing their second courses. The bottom line is that it seems Colline Emiliane doesn't care for non-Italian patrons. During the course of our dinner, the "host" could be seen jollying it up with the Italian diners, and ignoring us. There are so many other restaurants in Rome that are respectful of tourists and which deserve our patronage. This week we dined at Roscioli, Roma Sparita, Armando al Pantheon, and Da Francesco -- each of which made us feel welcome. Consider these restaurants rather than Colline Emiliane. read more

Nothing spectacular honestly, but nothing horrible either. The service is stand-out. They're very attentive and extremely nice! The restaurant is clean and well maintained. It gets a little hot in there, so dress accordingly! I was sticking to my seat by the end of the meal! We had a tagliatelle bolognese and fried veal cutlet with mashed potatoes. Just average really. We also had the tiramisu and lemon meringue pie--both unremarkable. I've had much better food in Rome, so I have to be a little harsh. We loved this place so much that we came twice in the same week. Casual and cozy with friendly and very efficient service. Come here for dinner! Join the locals here for a cozy setting and delish dinner. Make a reservation, I saw people turned away because this place was fully booked. Our starters are the soup of meat dumplings in clear broth and ravioli filled with pumpkin. The soup was heavenly with many dumplings in an addictive and savory broth. The freshly made ravioli filled with pumpkin was delish. The pumpkin was sweet like eating candy. Our entrees were the ravioli filled with sausage, spinach, and cheese and the veal topped with ham and cheese. This Ravioli dish was another winner for me and the veal had a real kick to it with the flavors of rich melted cheese and salty ham. Really enjoyed the asparagus and pork cheeks pasta -- they somehow achieve this amazing balance with the asparagus where it's refreshing and not too asparagus-y. The braised veal was fall apart tender with a wonderful sauce, which with the creamy mashed potatoes was just a creamy mouthful of heaven. We stopped in on a rainy day for lunch. If you don't know this place is here, you will miss it...and that would be a rotten shame. The restaurant is small and family owned. Upon entering, you will see home made desserts to your right, made by the mom. Some of these have won awards, if I could only remember the name. It was nutty and reminded me of a pecan pie...a slice of heaven. They had just opened for the day and service was quick and attentive. We had two different dishes of stuffed pasta, Spinach Ricotta and Pumpkin. Both were delightful, but the spinach and ricotta was magnificent. On our first night in Rome, the BF and I were looking for restaurants near our hotel and Colline Emiliane were in the list of "great reviews" and "within walking distance." But alas, but no reservation and a packed house, we had to venture else where. The next day, I called when the restaurant right when they opened for dinner and got a reservation for 9:30pm. So if you're like us and have adjusted to the Italian schedule of eating late for dinner, you can probably snag a same day reservation. For dinner, we actually skipped the antipasto since we "snacked" earlier that evening. We ordered the pumpkin ravioli and the veal cutlet to share. Both were amazing, especially the ravioli. The BF does not like pumpkin, but he actually liked this pumpkin ravioli here! The one downside is that I think this place had the smallest portion size in all the places I ate in my two weeks in Italy. We ended up also ordering the tagliatelle bolognese after the veal since we were still hungry. The tagliatelle was ok, I preferred the ravioli more. Wonderful family run experience! My friend and I ate here two nights in a row and had a really great time. My take away lesson is to make a reservation to ensure a spot and to make it a little easier on the restaurant staff. They kindly accommodated us both nights, but many parties came in after without a reservation, and they were not seated. The staff tried to accommodate everyone and it seemed stressful for them! I had the tagliatelle with porcini and with bolognese sauces. Both were delicious, but I would recommend the porcini! It was super light and fresh. The aunt makes all the pastas! My friend had the ravioli with pumpkin- so delightful and fresh! The desserts are homemade! We had the chocolate almond cake for dessert and s daily special: a strawberry custard pie. They had fabulous presentation and were delicious. The main water is a charming and genuine man. He is a very sweet, knowledgable person. I saw in other reviews that people were ignored. I am sure this is not intentional as I watched both nights as the whole staff accommodated everyone to the best of there ability. I will add, we came here because i found this restaurant through EATER38 and normally the line would be a half mile long however we came during early December and it was a miracle we got in after waiting outside for about 15 min for the possibility of a table. Oh my, Colline Emiliane most certainly lived up to all the hype. Since I did not have a reservation, I got to the restaurant and queued for about 20 minutes before the restaurant opened for lunch. I did not mind waiting outside as it was a very hot June day. Those that had a reservation were seated first followed by those that did not. We all were able to get a seat. The restaurant is very intimate and thus seating is limited. In less than 10 minutes of opening, the restaurant was completely full for lunch and there was already a line outside. I made it a point to eat rather quickly because there was a long queue outside of hungry patrons. The pumpkin tortellini with butter and sage was The best pumpkin pasta I have ever had. How could I skimp on dessert? I sat right next to the dessert display. Everything looked delicious so I had my server choose for me. This restaurant had very pleasant service. Even though I was by myself I did not experience any hostility that I have come to expect from a single male dining in Rome. Especially after my horrendous experience at La Prosciutteria Trevi. The Antipasto Miso was a bit cold as it was seemingly fried before but it still had decent flavour. I also got a plate real garlic bread which was great. The Tortilline Alla Gioia pasta was pretty tasty and although I had another course I couldn't help but finish my plate. It was a very local place. Majority of the customers were Italians with guest and it was such a character filled place. There was a slight disagreement and some harmless table banging in the back kitchen. The legendary Italian temper I suspect. The Bocconcini di Vitello Capricciosi was okay. A bit salty but the veal was very tender. I also finished this plate. It was overall a very enjoyable experience. I would definately recommend for a night of character and decent food. I even recieved some complementary grappa. However be forewarned...there is no air condition just ceiling fans so expect some warmth during your dinner. My girlfriend and I selected this restaurant after finding it in the Michelin Guide and reading the positive reviews on Yelp. We made a reservation, arrived, and were promptly seated. We ordered water, a bottle of red wine, and a salad to start. The service was good, but slow. The restaurant was full and there was one waiter and a guy helping him, both were very nice and spoke English. We didn't feel rushed and the waiter told us to take our time. After the salad course, we both ordered pasta. I got the tagliatelle bolognese and she got the taglioini pomodoro. Both were very good, but were typical of what you could find at a typical restaurant in Rome...usually at half the price. We ate that course slowly, while enjoying our wine and conversation. When we finished, we continued to talk and drink our wine. The waiter came over and asked us if we'd like dessert and coffee. We said yes and ordered two espressos. While looking over the dessert menu, an older gentleman, perhaps the owner, came over and took the menus from us, told us that we'd been there too long (almost 2 hours) and that we had to leave. This took us both a bit by surprise because the wait staff had been so friendly and had never hinted at us needing to hurry up, nor offered us dessert any earlier. While it's certainly understandable that a popular and small restaurant has people with reservations that they need to sit, there are more polite ways of hurrying people up. The waiter seemed a little embarrassed about what happened, brought us our espressos and the bill, we paid, and left. Despite the rudeness of the owner, we enjoyed our meal (though we wanted dessert), but there's really nothing special about this place. The food is pretty standard at a slightly higher price point. There are certainly better (or comparable) places to eat in Rome, but you won't be disappointed with the food here. read more

We arrived in Rome, threw a coin in the Trevi fountain, and searched Yelp for a lunch spot. There was a 25 minute wait for lunch. Surely a good sign. Mortadella- another day, another meat. We enjoyed our meal at Colline Emiliane. As expected with most reputable restaurants in Rome, the pasta is fresh. The secondi (meat) dishes are also quite good here. Service is quick and friendly, and they speak English well (if that matters for you). Price is typical for most of western Europe and Italy (i.e., high!). Would give it a try if you're in the Via Veneto area! Word of advice - make a reservation beforehand since the restaurant is relatively small and gets full quickly. I have wanted to dine at Colline Emiliane for quite a while. The last time I was in Rome the restaurant was closed due to a death in the family. The restaurant was located about a 15-minute walk from my hotel, Hotel Parlamento. It's a small restaurant located close to two favorites of mine (Gioa Mia and Hostaria Romana). I enjoy finding local restaurants that serve authentic cuisine. Colline Emiliane serves classic Bolognese dishes. I was hoping they would have lasagna Bolognese, like I had in Bologna a few years ago. It was served with green lasagna, which was heavenly! This restaurant didn't have it but the menu had many other great choices. With me were two friends, L and J. We shared a couple of plates of mortadella and proscuitto for appetizers. Both were excellent and the meats sliced ever so thin. I had the tagliatelle alla Bolognese, which was delicious, along with a side dish of sautéed spinach and garlic (large portion). Another excellent, small, out of the way, traditional restaurant. The food is not Roman but from the Emilia-Romagna (think Bologna). Nothing fancy, just great home cooking in a nice simple atmosphere. Tough to find untill you are right in front of the door. read more

My wife and I tried to make reservations the night of on a Thursday night, they didnt answer their phone until after they had sat the 730 seating so all that was left was the 915 seating and that was too late for us. We made a rezo for the following night and it was completely worth it. They turned on the sign around 715 and sat us shortly there after, all tables were full immediately and for the next two hours they had to turn away walk ins. (I think it was) the roast lamb was incredible, my wife wouldn't stop talking about it for days after. The chocolate flan is the first flan i've had in 12 years that was as good as my friend's cuban grandmother's, that is saying A LOT seeing how I live in Tampa and after nearly 10 years of living here can't find a good flan that compares. read more

A cozy place with decent bathrooms. It was worth the 45 wait time to get a table seated right by the door with people standing near us; I did not mind because I was enjoying the fresh Caprese salad, and tagliatelli with olive oil and tomatoes and a side of spinach. The noodles were extra thin and soft and something I've never had before. The dishes were light and simple and I think that is the key to any dish. A few fresh ingredients is all one needs to make a delectable dish. For desert we ordered tagliatelli bolognese and another side of spinach. The pasta was that good. It confused our server. read more
