I love dining in Europe. It's quite the opposite of dining in the US. It's a slow and relaxed meal and usually with super friendly wait staff. Our meals in Europe typically last about 2 hours. I've had the same wonderful dining experience throughout Spain, France and Italy, except for tonight! This was probably the worst dining experience I've had in Italy and In Europe for that matter. We had 9:30pm dinner reservations. It was for 3 people, but my daughter wasn't feeling well, so just my husband and I showed up. We usually ask our waiter for recommendations and usually they are extremely helpful and explain many different dishes to us. Our waiter, however, quickly pointed to four things and said "This, this, and this." Ok, so we went with 3 of his recommendations. To our surprise our first course arrived within a few minutes. We were not even offered any bread, which every other table was given but ours. So, fine since our first course arrived so quickly, I wasn't going to ask for bread. Tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms was eh. Just ok, nothing spectacular like I was expecting from reading all the reviews. The tagliatelle with bolognese, on the other hand, was great! Our veal with mashed potatoes was pretty bland and really not that great. Tiramisu was actually pretty good considering almost every restaurant claims to have the best tiramisu and I stopped ordering it cause it was never true. This time, however, the tiramisu was the only thing that looked good to me, so I took chance and it was good! Now here's where it gets good...immediately when we were done with dessert, our waiter brought the check. Usually we have to ask for the check because the atmosphere in Italy is one of taking your time to relax and enjoy your dinner. To our astonishment our waiter said, "If you could hurry up, we have people waiting outside for a table." First off, there were people waiting outside, but they were a party of 3 and our table was so small, I can't imagine they could put a third person on there. Also, there were many tables of people that were there before us who were still enjoying their meal. They were not rushed out. Perhaps the reason we were rushed out and not others is because we were tourists? I'm not sure, but it was strange. Most everyone there seemed like they were locals. We are Asian and don't speak Italian, therefore we were easily identified as tourists. I'm hoping the fact that we are Asian had nothing to do with it. We were literally there less than an hour. We've had some awesome experiences with quality and taste of food, as well as friendly and welcoming staff at other restaurants that I would highly recommend: Roma Sparita (omg - really good), Rosicioli, Armando al Pantheon and Da Francesca. read more
