Just recently, my son needed a haircut and our local barber was out of town on vacation. I remembered Nick in Hinsdale and called to see if there was some availability. I came to find out that Nick's was purchased in the past few years by a young woman and her family. We quickly hit it off with her and found that she gives a great haircut for a fair price. (I'm sorry I've forgotten her name!) What I like about Nick's is that she has made some updates to the shop while preserving the character of this old school barber shop. She is also preserving Nick's legacy with photos and articles of this sweet and gentle man. It's really touching to see the connection she has made with the former owner. Pop in to Nick's for a step back in time and for a great haircut!

A low key hidden gem in swanky downtown Hinsdale. It is conveniently located across the street from…read morethe Metra train station so parking is typically easy to find. You don't find many true old school barber shops anymore whether it's in the city or in the suburbs. Nick, the proprietor, has been expertly cutting hair for over 58 years. He listens to your requests and follows them diligently with a suggestion or two if desired. When you get your hair cut here, his decades of expertise are apparent as soon as he is finished. Haircuts are never rushed, no matter how busy it is or how near it is to closing time, and are only finished when Nick's perfectionism tells him the haircut is finished. The shop itself is modest and unpretentious: no hawking of overpriced salon products, no fancy furniture, and thankfully no blaring trendy music. There are three barber seats plus one for shampoos, eight seats for waiting, a small old TV that's playing the news, and an authentic old cash register, that's it. If you want fancy decor and your hair cutter to play your therapist please go to any number of nearby "salons". This is not to say that Nick is not a great listener and a kind person because he is both but he is also refreshingly straightforward in his opinions when asked. He just tends to focus on the task at hand which is to give you a great haircut and in my opinion that is all that should really matter. Ironically, Nick also possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge about trains and their history. If you'd like to learn about trains ask him about them (there are train photos and tchotchkes strewn throughout the otherwise bare decor). Ultimately this place is about cutting hair with an expert's hand and a perfectionist's eye at an unbelievably low price. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because the prices are low the finished quality is somehow low. If anything, the exact opposite is true. Nick understands and knows how to handle hair much much better than the average salon "hair stylist" hack ever will. With all of the money you will save here you could splurge at the excellent sushi or Italian restaurants around the corner, and look great while doing so. ;-) A typical men's or women's haircut with a free shampoo costs $19!!!! If you prefer a razor cut on your hair it's an additional $2. Beard trims and shaves cost $15. Children's haircuts cost $18, $23 if fully styled. Walk ins are accepted but you can call ahead for an appointment. Open Tue-Thur 9-6pm, Sat 8-5pm, and closed on Sun & Mon. If you are tired of mediocre haircuts that cost $50-100 (and up!) then please give this place a try. You just cannot go wrong in the hands of Nick or in those of his partner Sammy, who is equally talented. I am thankful places like this still exist and I truly hope that it will stay in business forever! :-)
