Honestly, colonial diner food was great. Standard diner options. Great old school diner vibes. I got the chicken Caesar wrap deluxe with fries - yum. My vegetarian mom got a weird attempt at an avocado toast - I mean they tried! It's a diner, what can we expect. Yesterday, our meal almost took an hour to come out. And when it did, 1/3 of the table got their food and then it was another 12 minutes for the next third and another 12 minutes for the next. My uncle had to eat his meal alone because the rest of the animals at the table couldn't wait. So it's safe to say that logistically they have some work to do. Overall, solid diner spot. read more

This is our go to diner when we are in the area. They are friendly and always accommodate our large group. They have great pancakes that can come with fruit and powdered sugar. I always get the egg white omelets. My favorite is mushroom so tasty and HUGE. I also like their home fries. However, the true stars of this diner is the Staff. The service was very good; our waitress made sure to clarify dishes she was bot sure about with her coworkers, several employees came by throughout our time to ask if all was okay and the waitress brought napkins(my fave) without my requesting it. The food was pretty good. We got the: -grilled chicken sandwich: good but not as much chicken as I have had at other diners -chicken souvlaki platter: delicious. Very good size for the price. Quintisensial NJ diner with all your typical diner staples. This place has all the charm of an old school diner with a more modern menu. It's clean and tidy and everything you could ask for. They always have great specials which makes deciding what to eat nearly impossible every time. And if you're like me, you always end up with the usual anyways but I appreciate the variety! This used to be an amazing diner. Sat down to lunch the other day and it left a lot to be desired. I ordered a tuna sandwich on whole wheat bread and got in on white toast. And there was so little tuna on the sandwich it was like tuna is made of gold. The fries were cold. My boyfriend had a burger and it did look pretty on the plate, but it was way overcooked. Well done to the point of dry when he asked for medium. His fries were cold, too. The soup was delicious! We did not complain since it was both of us and we didn't want to seem like complainers. The service was very good. Our waitress was run of her feet but she was very nice and attentive. Can't believe I've gone this long without even knowing this amazing diner existed! As soon as I saw it I knew I had to check it out. Classic diner vibes from the outside all the way down to the placemats. I specifically came here for dessert - I was craving a home made apple pie and I knew this place wouldn't disappoint. They completely exceeded my expectations. An entire menu of fall desserts - pumpkin pies, cheesecakes, Apple crumb, etc. The apple crumb came with a maple bourbon ice cream which was an unbeatable combo. My boyfriend tried the pumpkin pie which was also delicious. We did try food as well - the chicken noodle soup and a Greek wrap which were both very tasty. Lots of quantity - each half of his roast beef sandwich contained a slab of medium-done meat, and clearly more than 2 eggs used in my 2-egg dish. The sandwich was "not memorable" and my eggs tasted raw. The home fries ordered as well-done had a burned side while the rest was underdone. We won't return; the food was that bad. My recommendation is to ask the waiter/waitress what's good so that perhaps your experience will be better than ours. read more

This diner is so cute! It's got the classic 50s-60s diner vibe - simple and not too overwhelming menu, fast service, and extremely fantastic and hospitable staff. And it's bigger than it looks from the front. I came here for the first time last week and got the Chicken Souvlaki Platter. It's delicious and the portion was pretty big! I could do without the tzatziki though - it was a bit too tangy for me. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger and fries too. I looked online to find out the name of the burger because I forgot to take a picture of the menu, but I couldn't find the name of it online. I don't think their online menu is updated. But his burger had BBQ sauce and cole slaw on it, if that helps lol If I'm ever in the area again, I'll be sure to come back and try more of the menu! read more

This place is always packed no matter what time it is as they are open 24/7! Early riser, afternoon bedhead, or drunk as a skunk and need your fix, here's where you go! I primarily eat breakfast here no matter what time of the day it is, but patrons order everything off the menu. I love coming here because portions are generous and reasonably priced. A side order of sausage is usually 2 links, but here it's 3! Fresh ham is sliced and served for breakfast versus the typical deli cut/packaged meat you find elsewhere at a diner. The retro diner vibe is chill too! Ironically the only thing I cannot order here is their coffee. It often tastes burnt so I stick with tea. Small lot, but street parking available as well. Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst is a classic diner set up with pretty great food and a fairly generous staff. The price is very good for the serving sizes that they offer. Food: Often times they have a very good availability of delicious food and they have a very good hamburger that I feel is overlooked. One of the interesting things about this place is their pies. One of there offerings is a blueberry pie is salted caramel ice cream, which I was surprised had me begging for me despite how full I was from it. Service: There are times when the staff may seem calloused, but I have also seen some uninviting people there which probably bothered them. One of the best diner's I have ever been to! I was very pleasantly surprised at how awesome my brunch was. My friend and I shared the breakfast quesadilla, the breakfast burger and the strawberry pancakes and I can't make up my mind on which one I liked best....they were all 10/10! The burger was especially good, I would say it's the best diner burger I have ever had. The breakfast quesadilla was better than anyone I have had at other diners....packed with bacon and bursting with cheese. Threw some sour cream and hot sauce on it and it made for a perfect brunch. This is a tough one to review. Why? Because the place was clean and tidy, our server was a sweetheart and the pie was decent. (The burgers looked really good, too!) But an incident at the cash register between the owner and two unhappy customers provided more noise and drama than an episode of 'Real Housewives of New Jersey.' We stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon for some dessert. First time. Yelp reviews looked good, and all that jazz. Parking is sufficient enough for a full-house of customers, and when you walk in you are welcomed with open arms. ~ I noticed several regulars come and go as well, and everyone seemed to know everyone else's name. Before my pie was ever delivered the the table, however, all hell broke loose at the cash register.  Male customer: 'Ma'am, we'll pay for the soup, but it has taken too long for the meal. Please give us the difference back.' Owner: 'What am I supposed to do with the food? You ordered it, so you're paying for it.' Male customer: 'Ma'am, the food never arrived. We ordered it 30 minutes ago.' Owner: 'It's ready now, we'll pack it up.' Male customer: 'We don't want the food. Could you please just give us our money so that we can leave?' And it escalated from there. Yelling between both parties. Threats of calling the police. Back and forth ... for a good five minutes. As much as I don't always agree, the customer 'is always right.' In this case, a couple came in and ordered, received (and ate) their soup, then waited a while, and finally decided to hoof it. They were more than willing to pay for what they'd eaten and drank. Having been in similar situations myself, I understood where the patrons were coming from. On the flip side, this is a small mom & pop business. It's not a chain in which microwaves and assembly lines are employed to get the food out in seconds. I think any reasonable patron should realize that. Ultimately though, it was the owner who could have diffused the situation with a simple apology and perhaps an offer to make things right in the future. Instead, she argued. 'What am I supposed to do with your food?' the woman barked at the customer at one point during their standoff. I remember thinking at that moment that it really isn't the customer's problem what can or can't be done with the food. He ordered it. It took too long for him, and he changed his mind. Period. The end. It's an unfortunate cost of doing business. And such interactions are also a warning to patrons like me. If I ordered a medium burger and it comes out well done, what would she say to me? It's not very good business and, unfortunately, it's a big reason more and more people are forgoing old-school mom & pop joints in lieu of chains. That alone, is a tragedy. read more
