The BEST donut shop in the bay! They have uncommon donuts that you won't find elsewhere such as the blueberry and ube cakes, which are my absolute favorites! They're also open 24 hrs! Made fresh every (early) morning. Just make sure you go before the evening to get some of their inventory because they don't keep stock of their donuts once they run out for the night. Since I don't live nearby anymore, I usually call to make sure they have what I want before I trek a 15-mi drive to pickup some to-die-for donuts when my sweet tooth hits. I have tried an assortment of donut shops near home and in the South Bay, but nothing compares so Colonial Donuts will always be my #1 donut spot. Not sure how I've never gotten around to reviewing Colonial Donuts, but it's almost unnecessary, as their donuts speak for themselves. But this longstanding Oakland institution is special, and their donuts have remained consistently delicious year after year (which speaks to their longevity and loyal customer base, myself included). Colonial has multiple locations across the city, but the Lakeshore location is the 24/7, 365 operation that never stops pumping out donuts. I love places like this, which seem to be part of a bygone era. The owners are incredibly nice, welcoming people, and like using Instagram to communicate about new flavors. That's how I found out about their strawberry cake donuts last year, which are crazy good and I definitely recommend (both the glazed and unglazed are great). As much as I like trying new flavors of foods I enjoy, I'm a pretty simple gal when it comes to donuts. A classic raised maple and some milk are all I need, and Colonial's raised maple is absolutely delicious. Light, fluffy, soft, and just the right amount of dense, with a perfect amount of maple glaze. No oil taste at all, just pure donut goodness. I've never had a bad donut here, and I've had a lot of donuts here. In an age of pretentious donut spots that don't stick around for very long and donut trends that come and go (looking at you, cronut), Colonial remains a tried and true spot making solid, delicious, consistent donuts at reasonable prices. The classic glazed and raised sugar donuts are nice here too, as are the blueberry cake donuts. Prices went up of course (probably due to Covid impact and inflation), but the prices are still reasonable. Also looks like no more dining in; they took all the chairs out. When I lived on E15th I felt like they never got too packed late night, but there was quite the line last night. Good to see the business is still going strong though. OMG! I had such a craving for a cinnamon roll and, thankfully, I found a place to park right away. I went in and there was only one person in line, but one of the employees behind the counter got to me right away and offered me her service. I told her I wanted a cinnamon roll. The Apple Fritter here is AMAZING! Stumbled by this donut store and decided to go in to get one (it's only $2.30) and the fritter was so good! Although there are not a whole ton of apples in the donut itself, the texture of the fritter is amazing. The outsides was so crispy and flavorful without being overly flaky. The fritter itself on the inside was very soft and still carried the warmth from just being out of the fryer. Would definitely come back just to get more of that Apple Fritter! Came here for the ube, red velvet, and blueberry. I'd say skip the red velvet as it doesn't taste like chocolate and or cream cheese frosting and double up on the blueberry. The blueberry had the perfect amount of light crisp and sweetness. She's in an area that preppy people will not stop in just because there's quite a few homeless people hanging out nearby & they might be scared to stop since there are many tents in the surrounding area under the bridges etc. So just note that if you prefer to stay away from those areas. If you're a fan of cake donuts, they have the best in my opinion. The density and flavor is *chef's kiss* Their raised donuts are great, too, don't get me wrong: I get a combo of cake and raised in my dozen. They have plenty of options to choose from like fritters, bear claws, croissants, sandwiches, etc. You can come for a meal or a snack. The staff was also very nice. 5 stars for customer service and cleanliness! I ordered 7 donuts - a white powder, devil's food, ube, chocolate coconut, chocolate peanut, french maple, and cinnamon sugar. I took one star down because some of the donuts, especially the powder donut, we're on the dry side. Even though it was later in the day, it is a 24-hour shop so I'd expect the donuts to keep being refreshed. Additionally, some of the donuts tasted greasy. The devil's food was the star of the show. It was perfectly moist, chocolate-y, and fell apart in the best possible way. The cinnamon sugar donut was very fluffy and perfectly coated. It was like eating a churro but in a donut. I've been in Oakland for 2 weeks and have already been here 4 times. In fact, I've been recognized by one of the employees for coming so often. This is noteworthy because I don't get the sense they chit-chat with even regulars often. The doughnuts are legit. So good they converted my taste buds. To my delighted surprise they have fun new flavors like ube, red velvet, devils food, and mochi donuts!
