My husband and friends wanted coffee and we stopped at Colophon cafe for it. We ended up getting cookies and desserts along with coffee. The service was friendly and helpful. They have all their baked goods displayed near the hostess station and we had to get some. We got a Cherry Danish, Oatmeal Raisin Coconut Peacan cookie, and a Chocolate Chip cookie. We loved all the desserts we got and they were gone in a couple mins. read more

It's in the historic Pythias Building and has been serving up some of the most wholesome and tasty food in Bellingham since 1985. A little bit of an old hippie vibe which I love. Cozy wooden booths and lots of local art work. During a recent weekend stay (at the Fairhaven Village Inn- wonderful place) a friend & I found ourselves returning to the Colophon a few times. I had lunch here today, and was very disappointed. It took 45 minutes to receive my food, a simple half sandwich and cup of soup, while I had the dubious pleasure of watching people come in after me and get served before me. The food was so late I had to ask them to put it in to-go boxes. The chicken and avocado sandwich I ordered had almost no meat on it, but at least the rye bread was soft. Wait staff were unprofessional and walked away leaving their handheld payment device in my hands. I have had good service here, but not today. Made for an unpleasant experience. read more

I finally got to try the food here after bookmarking it for several years. We came here after 11 am, just before the lunch rush. It got busy to almost full capacity closer to 12 pm on a weekday. It was always crowded when I was here on weekends. Maybe that was why it took me a few years to try the food too. The breakfast/brunch menu is until 1 pm, even on weekdays. That is great! I like the breakfast menu more than the lunch/dinner menu. I was tempted by the shashuka and clam chowder. In the end I decided to try the July special - biscuits and gravy. I also ordered a side of clam chowder. (Un)fortunately the server didn't bring it to me. I think he forgot to write it down. I was stuffed with the biscuits and gravy so I didn't ask him about it. He also forgot to write down my friend's added order of the turnover. The biscuits and gravy was good. I liked the gravy, very flavorful with the mushroom and sausage. The biscuits were not dry and just a bit crumbly. I couldn't finish the dish. It would be perfect if half order was available. Then I could probably have half biscuit and gravy with a side of soup. It did take a while for the food to arrive or to catch anyone's attention. Come here if you're not in a rush. It feels like being on "island time" here. read more

Not only a great location in downtown Fairhaven (Bellingham), but there are delicious and healthy food options to be had here. I always enjoy a bowl of homemade soup (consistently creative and yummy!) when I'm in the area, or a tasty sandwich. Love their community involvement, focus on sustainability, and support of local businesses. Perfect spot to satisfy your hunger and also to relax. The terrace is right on the Village Green, and is a fun place to people watch or pop over to the farmers market when it's in session (doublecheck on that, as I know there is now also a market in Barkley Village and another at the old train depot). Came here for the first time during a visit to Bellingham the other day, we only stopped in for drinks and some sunshine on their patio. My apple cider hot toddy was delicious. I enjoyed the view of the park/court yard. We didn't have any food but their small bites menu was intriguing and we would have ate if we hadn't just left brunch. We ordered food to go. We ordered chicken pot pie, a sandwich w/chips and a side of potato wedges. What they did was throw a small amount of wedges in with the sandwich and did a 50/50 mix with the chips. This is not what I asked for nor is it what I paid for. When I called back to speak with a manager, a woman, by the name of Lily.W, was handed the phone (this happened to be the same person who took my order) and she proceeded to argue with me that Colophon did nothing wrong. She said that she was not willing to do anything to fix the situation aside from come in and get a couple more potato chips. I thought this was very unprofessional of her to argue with me and a very wrong way to handle the situation. I've been coming to this place since I was a kid with my auntie but I will not be returning. Just a god-awful experience. read more

Surprised to see this only has 3.5 stars. Our sandwiches (the chicken/brie/apple and salmon burger) and the African peanut soup were excellent, and we appreciated the choice of sides (soup, salad or rosemary potato wedges) instead of the standard chips or fries. read more

The outside seating had a good ambiance, right off the green area, perfect for a sunny day and the staff was very pleasant. I got the 'southwest chicken salad' off their special board. There was nothing wrong with it per se, but I feel like it could have better, hence giving it 4 stars. Potato wedges were not fantastic; made better with a side of fancy mayo. Artichoke dig was delicious. Spicy Bloody Mary went down easy. Prices are typical for the area. Not cheap, but won't break the bank. Happy hour is worth making for slight discount on some food and beverage. Overall, okay place if you want something, but nothing special. Location is ideal for doing some overpriced Fairhaven shopping or attending events. I'm not likely to dine here again, but wouldn't be opposed if someone wanted me to. read more

When we walked into this cafe, we were sadly informed that all of the tables had just filled up and we could wait 15 min OR we had the option of sitting on some comfy chairs or couches next to a coffee table to eat. When I say I have literally driven the full hour and a half from Seattle just to come here, I'm not kidding. I first came here with my cousin last summer. I got the village turkey and we shared a cheeseboard. However, we decided we needed more cheese and got a second one. I'm really not a sandwich person, but I kid you not: this was the best sandwich I had ever eaten in my life. When my other cousin wanted to hang out with me and my husband, I immediately suggested we drive to Fairhaven just to go to Colophon. I got the Village Turkey again because it was just so amazing. My husband and I stayed in Fairhaven for our anniversary and we of course had to stop by Colophon on 10/10. This time I got the chicken Brie sandwich. It was just as amazing as the village turkey, and my husband loved his meal too. Not to mention all of the drinks (both coffee and cocktails) that we've had here have been amazing too. Ambiance is something to be desired at Colophon, but it's honestly a little refreshing to see that it hasn't changed over all these years. Not everything needs updating, but it could use a little bit of a new paint job, some newer decor maybe. The food is fairly consistent. Their sandwiches are pretty good and dessert is the same. Nice variety. Pleasant service. All in all, it just feels like the whole place needs a slight update, including the menu and a reexamination of their food before it goes out to a table (is the carrot cake fresh enough or a tad dry?) and this place would be nailing it. Colophon Café is a classic Americana café with burgers, sandwiches (hot and cold), salads, bagels, quiches, and soups, i.e. the basics. I had the portabella sandwich, replacing feta with avocado. I found the ingredients to be fresh, and the sandwich to be tasty. Others in the group ordered meatball subs, B-BAT, turkey avocado, salmon bagel, clam chowder, and a burger. No complaints so that's a good sign. Food wise, I think this is a 4 stars restaurant, knowing you are getting straight-up Americana. I'm dinging it one star for the cost. I was surprised that a restaurant in Bellingham that doesn't look like it has had any updates for years charges $14 for a cold sandwich. I can get a comparable sized fresh sandwich in expensive Kirkland or Bellevue for closer to $10, maybe $12. Maybe I'm not understanding Bellingham costs, even though other places I visited seem to meet expectations, i.e. cost less. The staff was kind and attentive; our food arrived quickly. They were conveniently open on a Monday, and that's how we ended up going in there. read more

If you go to Colophon Cafe in Bellingham's historic Fairhaven neighborhood, go for the atmosphere. It's in a large historic building with outdoor patio seating along a public square that hosts movie nights, a farmers market and other fun community events. The staff are friendly and fast, but the food is nothing to write home about. The menu is large, but I've been twice now and have yet to be wowed by the food. The chicken pot pie is not very good. I've always been a fan of this place. As a kid, my mom and I would come here pretty regularly after doing some book shopping next door. Today I came here on my own before heading to a hair apt. I got a cute table my the windows overlooking the green. Waitress asked if I wanted some coffee or tea and I replied, "How about a mimosa?!" She said, "Sure!" I was looking forward to getting the edge off as I am getting married in less than two weeks! I was pretty disappointed upon arrival of my beverage...
