I have been here dozens of times since I have lived in Bellingham and the quality has gone wayyyyy down. I will say our coffee were delicious. My boyfriend and I usually get the breakfast burritos or an egg-anue. The breakfast burritos price has gone up and up, while the quality has become more and more inconsistent. Literally no words for the perfect choices made here. Onions were cooked to perfection, the sausage patty made me feel like I was eating a breakfast burger in the best way, perfectly seasoned as well! Avocado, sometimes I get nervous with avocado because I don't like a huge bite of just avocado. Luckily they're hip, and only added a nice even spread of avocado at the bottom, literally perfect. Their breakfast menu is robust and inventive, including a list of breakfast sandwiches featuring local meat, cheese and produce, and with the ability to be served on their delectable rosemary English muffin. They also serve scrambles if you are looking for something bigger and they come with toast if your choosing and perfectly crispy hash browns. Lastly, their sandwiches. Being a bread shop, you'd assume good sandwiches have to be a must, but you will be shocked at just how good these babies are! My absolute favorite is the turkey cranberry, it tastes just as you'd want a thanksgiving leftover sandwich to taste with a cranberry cream cheese, fresh sliced roasted turkey, red onion and cucumbers for texture. I wanted to give this a better review, because I like the concept and their interesting menu. But, overall the food was average, not great. And the service is pretty slow (bordering on very slow). I didn't find them rude like some people reported, but not especially friendly either. I had the Popeye Eggenue on rosemary English muffin. It was good, but the mustard overwhelmed most of the other tastes. Perhaps this was why the rosemary muffin seemed surprisingly dull. But I think it was also that I would expect an English muffin to have more texture than this one--it was really more of just a bun. Avenue Bread is a downtown staple, and for good reason. First of all, they have wayyy more than bread. Yes, they're a bakery, and they have some amazing baked goods, but they also have a huge menu of sandwiches, soups, and other tempting treats. I usually go during breakfast and order one of their "Eggenue" sandwiches. From the BEAST to the French they are ALL good and very fresh and filling. You get your choice of a plain, whole grain, or rosemary English muffin - all of which are tasty options. If you're super hungry, ask for a side of hash browns. They cook them up super-crispy, just how I like 'em. And of course, their bottomless coffee is no slouch either. The service is always friendly, they have free wi-fi, and as long as you remember to keep your parking meter fed you can pretty much hang out here for hours. It's one of my favorite spots in downtown Bellingham to bring my laptop and get some serious work done (while, of course, enjoying delicious food too). read more

My favorite bakery in town! They make great sandwiches. They are a bit pricy. My son and I love the BLT & T (Bacon Lettuce Tomato and Turkey). It comes to just over $10 when the tax is added, but I think it's justifiable. First and foremost, their sandwiches are very good. They use really good fresh ingredients, including their amazing bread that they use. Also, their sandwiches are huge, and they are served with good potato chips (To-go sandwiches come with a small bag of Tim's Cascade potato chips). My son (11 years old) and I can just share one sandwich. This is one of local business that I keep coming back to and enjoy supporting. N.B.: Their pre-made sandwiches sold at Western Washington University are not good at all. It's hard for me to believe the same bakery can make these drastically different qualities of sandwiches! The ones sold on campus are no less expensive. They cost about $6.50. They are significantly smaller, and of much lower quality. They don't even come with potato chips. I love Avenue Bread. Their sea salt rosemary bread is my all time favorite bread! The downtown location is nice. It's the perfect spot to grab lunch with a friend, pick up some bread to bring home, or do some school work. There are these huge windows in the front that bring in a lot of natural light, which I love. I recently bought a seasonal vegetarian sausage sandwich on an English muffin and it was SO good! You place your order at the counter and seat yourself. My only downside is your meal can add up quickly, depending on what you get. I totally understand, since their food is really good and high quality, but isn't necessarily great for my student budget to have too regularly. This place was so good. We buy their loaves of bread at the grocery store but hadn't gone to the actual store front till yesterday. I got a Rueben with tomato soup and it was so good. The Rueben was really well made and I was sad I didn't order another half to take Home. The tomato soup really needed basil instead of dill in my opinion but I appreciate the risk taking. My fiancé ordered the Philly cheesesteak and it didn't have nearly enough cheese on it and was ultimately a little dry but not terrible and the chips were really good. He also ordered a dopio espresso but it wasn't pulled right and was extremely bitter. It was 2 shots of coffee pulled into about four shots worth of liquid. Their huge menu of deli sandwiches and salads, coupled by their desserts and coffee selection makes this a prime eating destination, especially for lunch.
