Let me just say that I don't frequent Starbucks or the other big coffee chains on a daily basis however, I love a good cup of coffee especially when I know its from Colorado River Coffee Roasters. I was first turned on to CRCR by good friend and former owner of Bread and Butter Chris Herrin. A few months later while dining at Eat in downtown, I enjoyed that same delicious smooth cuppa joe,(unfortunatey, both B&B and Eat no longer use them) and knowing that they were in Boulder City, I knew one of these days I HAD TO go straight to the source. Pulling up to their storefront, it looks like nothing from the outside but as you enter, the smell of roasting coffee beans hit you like WOW!!! We met Don and Erik Anderson who are responsible for making some of the most delicious coffee you will have ever tasted(if you haven't yet). They were even nice enough to give us a little behind the scenes tour and explain their delicate roasting process using state of the art equipment (infrared heat, not open fire) and even offered tips on how to enjoy their product in the best possible way. We decided to grab a bag of one of Eirk's favorite blends-Bolivia: Amor De Dios, a 12 ounce bag for $10. If you're looking for a specific characteristic, flavor, etc. they have other blends available and Erik will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. If you haven't had a taste of Colorado River Coffee Roasters, places like Grouchy John's, Great Harvest Bread Company, and Sambalatte have their own blends from CRCR that they serve up. You may also purchase coffee from CRCR online which will be delivered right to your doorstep, or better yet, take a drive to Boulder City and go straight to the source and get an even fresher product! Here are some helpful tips that Erik and Don suggested: COFFEE: DO NOT grind the beans fine...a coarse grind is suggested WATER: DO NOT boil your water!... 200 degrees Farenheit... no higher! EQUIPMENT: No fancy equipment/gadgets here- a FRENCH PRESS is their weapon of choice, and how Erik and Don enjoy the fruits of their labor.... DOSAGE: Start with an equal ratio of 1 gram beans to 1 gram water and steep for 4 minutes...if it isn't strong enough, increase the beans to your liking STORAGE: Store beans in a cool, dark place....DO NOT refrigerate or freeze!!! If my recent coffee obsession has taught me anything, it's that fresh beans are a must. Ideally, your coffee beans should be no more than a few weeks from the roast date and they should be ground immediately before use with a quality burr grinder. That's where CRCR comes in. My current bag of their Redwall Espresso blend had just run about out, so I figured what better time to visit the roastery? Meeting Erik and Jana, it's clear that this isn't really a job for them; it's a passion. Erik enthusiastically explained everything about the process from green bean to perfect roast. This is a catch 22 review from me on Colorado River Coffee Roasters. If I tell how good a cup of coffee their fresh roasted beans makes, I'm afraid the secret will be out and the lines will be long waiting to purchase them making it difficult for me to buy. If I don't write a review, it would be a disservice on my part, as this relatively small roasting operation produces outstanding products and they need to be exposed to the coffee drinking public. We tried their coffee at Craft Kitchen and were sold in their flavor and freshness of this wonderful coffee. We visited CRCR (were they purchase their coffee beans from) office and had the most amazing tour. The aroma alone was enough to go and have coffee at their nearest restaurant and of course after our education given to us by the owner Eric, we must purchase some so we can experience it everyday at home. We had recently purchased a Cuisinart coffee maker with its own grinder and we wanted to have the best coffee bean to make our morning coffee. I have been buying my coffee from Eric and Colorado River Coffee Roasters for years, and I am surprised I never wrote a review! CRCR provides an excellent example of a business that operates with integrity. They provide superb quality and freshness at a reasonable price. Fresh roasted beans from small, independent growers around the world. My personal favorite is the Ethiopian Sidamo, but all varietals are excellent. Went here for the first time today, as I was out of coffee beans, and heard that Sambalatte uses these guys. First impression was... it's tucked away in a nondescript industrial park building, with a very small sign. Counter that with friendly and helpful staff both on the phone and face to face.. and a facility that is spotless.. and smells like fantastic coffee. I expected to just do a quick in and out, but ended up getting caught up in a conversation about roasting and favorite beans and flavor and.. well, the employees are passionate, the facility is spotless inside, the beans are outstanding, and the price, at about $12 a pound, equal to some of the more preferential pound big name coffee chain blends, only.. so much better in taste I wouldn't blink at paying double, and still feel like I had a great deal. Yes, it's really that good. And yes, the people who work there are some of the best, more knowledgeable, and low-key (read - not snobs) folks I've ever had the pleasure to meet, who clearly not only have a passion for roasting great coffee, but also for providing perfect customer service. read more

After I found out some of the local coffee shops I liked used a local roaster, I went looking online for these guys. After ordering from them the first time, it became apparent I needed to step up my home coffee game - I used to buy the coffee sold at Whole Foods that they roast there which is okay but improperly stored, so unless you get it right when it's roasted, you're not getting anything special. CRCR is always quick to get my order to me within a few days of being placed, and it's always great, since it's properly sealed and fresh. My personal favorite is the Ethiopan Sidamo coffee, which is only available during certain times of year, sadly - they say it's got blueberry hints, these are really apparent when the coffee is super fresh: last time I had the Sidamo, I got it a day or two after roasting, the first few brews from that batch had more than a "hint" of blueberry... delicious! Other than that, I'm a fan of the Rio/Java blend and the Brazil Microlots, both of which are kind of "chocolatey" (made up word, but you get the drift). This is coffee you don't need any cream or sugar for. I love what I get from these guys and wholeheartedly recommend everyone buy from them. They've become my go-to for coffee, though I'll occasionally order from other places like Cuvee or La Colombe for variety's sake, it's really hard to beat getting coffee so fresh so fast through the mail. It's a little more expensive than just buying beans at the store, but worth spending the extra $6-8. read more

My wife and I recently stopped by and picked up a couple of fresh 12oz bags of Redwall Espresso and Ethiopian Sidamo ARDI. After dialing in the grinds we pulled some great, nutty and flavorful espresso and fantastic tasting pour-overs. Both of their Espresso blends are THE BEST I've ever had. Freshly roasted and delicious. I regularly place online orders to have it shipped to my house but last time forgot to click on shipping. Jana called to let me know my delicious coffee was ready to pick up. We stopped in thinking this was a retail operation. It isn't. They are a wholesaler that purchases beans from all over the world, roasts them, grinds them and supplies numerous well-known coffee shops and restaurants. Nevertheless, we had a great conversation with an owner who treated us to espresso (pulled the shots herself) and lovely coffee conversation about location, roasting and distribution. Espresso was great, smelled wonderful, tasted delicious with a long lingering flavorful after taste. Very nice people with a quality product. CRCR is one of the best coffee roasters in the US. Recently I have had to travel around a lot and there are very few roasters who have their coffee roasting at the level the Erik has taken it to. My favorite is the Sidamo ARDI, but I recently tried a PNG from the me that was the best PNG I have ever had. I highly suggest checking out and trying the coffee! read more

Colorado River Coffee Roasters roasts some of the best tasting coffee I have ever drank, and it is so geographically close to me! I love how delicate and flavorful their roasts are, and I love how many businesses are starting to serve their coffee (Sambalatte, Bread & Butter, Great Harvest Bread Company, to name a few). I received one of their gift boxes for Christmas, and the care they put into its assembly is awesome. The Sumatra roast is my personal favorite. Major props to CRCR! read more

Moved here to BC NV recently from Chicago in that Chi town has some kick ass coffee houses to get rid of your blues .. Up in Aptos Calif their is an amazing roaster where I once resided in the recent past .. I have visited Central America ( Guatemala ) where even the coffee you get in a gas station will be better than any chain place in the states .. However CRCR puts the flavor along with the aroma ( you can close your eyes and smell the region it's from ) it will be one of the best cups of coffee you'll ever try .. That's all .. I am not a huge coffee drinker...it literally takes me all day to drink my grande from that other place. I took my hubby to Yard bird at the Venetian/Palazzo for a birthday dessert and he ordered a cup of coffee. Being a kitchen gadget junkie, I secretly admired the cute little serving set used for his coffee. I had a bit of a tummy ache so a sip of his hot coffee was tempting. I took a sip...and boy were my socks knocked off!!!! I have never had a tastier, fresher cup of coffee in my entire life! I'm actually craving a cup right now but I'm resisting because I know without a doubt that what I make at home...what, to me was a very nice cup of coffee, will not compare to what I tasted today!!! After I saw a local email about Boulder City from Yelp, I ordered coffee online from Colorado River Coffee Roasters. I love coffee and let me tell you, YOU WILL LOVE THIS COFFEE. When they describe the flavors (examples being blueberry, strawberry, dried fruit and pastry for their Ethiopian Sidamo ARDI) you can actually pick up on the flavors in the smell and taste. It's smooth and strong finish makes it a huge hit for me. I'm going to be telling my coffee loving friends about CRCR because a place like this should be supported and I hope they have the best success in their business. I think we can all agree that when you get to a certain age (45 plus) there's not too many things to look forward to. Obviously, at 45 plus a good night sleep is one of those things. Also, when McDonald's has the McRib sandwich. And when the average temperature in Vegas is under 172. Well, simply put CRC coffee is one of "those things" you look forward to. I recently picked up the Brazil roast from my Whole Foods. The aroma was really great, but the taste wasn't quite as strong as I had hoped when I tried it in my drip maker. I was a little disappointed so after that I made a cup using a pour over (1-cup maker) method. The pour over cup turned out to be one of the best cups of coffee I had drank in a long time. I could taste the freshness of the roast and subtle flavors in my cup. So in conclusion, I strongly recommend anyone to try brewing a pour over cup with these beans, even if you like drip brew. I guarantee you it will be a great cup. 4/5 for drip, 5/5 for pour over I will definitely try again, but this time I am going to order directly from their website.
