    Delicious beef pasty!
    Pat M.

After reading reviews on Yelp, I had to try this place. How cool it was...it's from the 1920's and hasn't changed much! I'm really happy I tried it. As for the pasties, I had a beef and it was really good! I had actually just read about them in a book about the Midwest so it was very timely. If you want a taste of nostalgia, definitely stop in!

Rocky's Pasties: an easily missed entrance.

Rocky's Pasties has been a popular secret for over 85 years in the NJ town of Wharton. What are pasties and why Wharton??? A pasty is a meat and vegetable meal wrapped in a dough to form a manageable, hand held consumable meal without the concerns of reheating, transporting, etc...a complete ensemble. Think of a meat, vegetable, potato combination in a light gravy or broth stuffed into a baked flaky dough. Many cultures have this basic design from Chinese dumplings, South American empanandas, to this, the Cornish (English, Scott or Irish) Pasty. Finally, late in Dec 2009, I decided to pay this place a visit. As a take out only establishment, decor and ambiance do not matter. Their brief menu of 8oz pasties in Beef, Sausage, or Chicken were available to go as a hot item. Smaller sizes were only available frozen for you to heat at home. I tried both a beef and a sausage 8 oz. pasty. What's 8oz??? It's tremendously filling ! I overestimated my ability to eat. I immediately enjoyed the Sausage pasty as it was hot and fresh from Rocky's. The greatest impression was that of preparation with extremely fresh ingredients. The crust was hot, not overly flaky, but just right to contain the treats within. Potatoes were cubed, not diced, in large flavorfully fresh pieces. The sausage, to my surprise, was an Italian sausage. It was not overwhelming in flavor and combined well with the other ingredients. How did Rocky's manage to bend all the ingredients to permit each to meld to a proper flavor tone??? If more people appreciated this form of old fashioned fast food, McDonald's could have a run for their money. I enjoyed the the beef and sausage pasties equally. I had planned to photograph both the sausage and beef patties I purchased but, the sausage pasty did not survive the ride home. In fact, it was gone before I pulled out of my parking spot. Years ago, a Polish coworker from the Ukraine brought to my attention an article in The Star Ledger about this business. As best as I can determine today, this is the original interesting article: http://www.robinfriedman.com/articles/pasties.html Why do I mention this? Pasties have been enjoyed by different cultures in the US principally in mining communities. Wharton, next to Mine Hill, NJ is an old iron mining town. Northern parts of the US adapted the pasty regardless of cultural background. Today, it's just damn good !

    Chicken and sausage pasties

I simply love their sausage or chicken pasties. I'm from Europe as well as have visited England several times and just miss that spot on, delicious taste and quality here in NJ. Rocky's pasties are delicious, warm, flavorful, just like a grandma might make. Created with love, even the outside dough is both tender and crispy, and perfectly browned. All-around perfect lunch, picnic food, or handheld dinner. I can never seem to remember that I live 5 minutes away and don't eat them as much as I could/should! But Everytime I do, I love it. Come support the local delicious pasty. They also have things like poppy seed or jam strudel, packaged kielbasa, and half sour pickles.

I had been in the area for several days to tour apartments and daycares in advance of our planned move to Pennsylvania next year... so a lovely tea was my little splurge on the trip after days of drinking protein shakes on the go. I made a reservation for 10 am on Sunday, right when they opened, since I was going to go straight to the airport afterward. I was seated immediately, and everything came out pretty fast. I opted for the full afternoon tea, which comes with eight tea sandwiches, a scone with clotted cream, lemon curd, and strawberry preserves, and three assorted mini pastries, along with a pot of tea. You can choose up to four flavors for the sandwiches (so you get two of each flavor for a total of eight mini sandwiches), so I got the curried chicken salad, egg salad, cucumber and cream cheese, and cheddar cheese and chutney. Most tea places give you four sandwiches per person, so there was no way I was finishing eight of these. Thankfully, I got four of them in a to-go box and they ended up being a tasty snack on the plane. The curried chicken salad was my favorite (which they sell in their to-go containers in the gift shop), followed by the cucumber and cream cheese (the cucumbers were thinly sliced, which makes a big difference!). The egg salad was good, but a bit mild-flavored. I can't say I loved the cheddar cheese and chutney combo, so in the future I might just opt for more of the curried chicken or cucumber sandwiches instead. For the scone, I chose blueberry citrus, which was delicious! I used a very thin layer of the lemon curd, followed by the strawberry preserves and topped with the clotted cream. All of the flavors worked quite well on the scone. I wasn't blown away by the mini desserts (I can't recall exactly what flavors they were, but there was a posset that was a bit saltier than I was expecting, a blueberry cream puff, and a mini cake slice). But as I've gotten older, I've found myself more drawn to the savory aspect of afternoon teas anyway. The rest of the meal was delicious enough, and filling enough, that I honestly was never going to be able to finish everything. I was dining solo here, and I'm guessing not a lot of people do a tea for one, so I ended up chatting with 4-5 different employees here over the course of my meal. I have to say that the service here may have been the friendliest I've experienced pretty much anywhere. Everyone I spoke with was so welcoming and kind! When it came time for me to leave, they all wished me a safe trip back to Florida and said they hoped to see me again as one of their "regulars" once we move. I can already tell you, I hope that's the case too! This place is adorable, inside and out. And I love the assorted British foods available in the gift shop, along with fun kitchenware. If my suitcase hadn't already been packed to the brim, I probably would've spent more money in that shop. I'm looking forward to returning next year once I escape the Sunshine State :)

Browse the British gifts and snack items in the attached shop as you wait for your table. If reservations aren't required, they're highly recommended because the few times we've been here it's been full. Fun atmosphere for a staycation lunch and the array of available teas is amazing. Our favorite this time was the summer seasonal Mai Tai, a refreshing, light, and fruity brew.

King's Highway has a charming little stretch of independent ambition, all tidy storefronts and quiet confidence. This is where you can find The British Chip Shop, which I had long intended to try, and at last my synapses and my hunger aligned. The place was empty when I entered, which always feels like it could be either a warning or a gift. A voice from the kitchen promised to appear, and did, promptly and kindly, seating me by the window like a character in a underattended play. I ordered the daily special: Pork pie, mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and added a Tango orange soda for good measure. The pork pie arrived hot and full of purpose, the kind of food that knows exactly what it is. The mushy peas were fresh and honest. The mashed potatoes, however, seemed to have lost the will to live, bland and harboring a cold, defiant lump of butter at their center. The soda did exactly what it claimed, which is all one can ask of a soda. Only later did I notice I could have swapped the peas and mash for chips, and for a few dollars more added cheese and curry sauce. This knowledge arrived to me too late, as most useful knowledge does. Next time, I will be wiser. All told, an enjoyable, slightly pricey lunch with one unfortunate spud based misadventure. Still, if you find yourself wandering this lovely town, it is worth stepping inside. Four stars, because curiosity was rewarded, if not perfectly fed.

The food is great but taking into consideration me and my dining companion only had an iced tea and soft drink, me a sandwich, my companion a salad, one order of fries and extra dipping sauce. Understandable the rising costs get passed onto the customer, the final bill of over $71., we both deemed a bit much. Although the town draws a high-end crowd, sadly while I dined there were sparse other diners. I hope the place thrives on, although again, I felt the money spent wasn't worth it.
