What a find! Looking for something different for Friday lunch, I searched in Yelp and found Rocky's and I'm happy. Street parking, a parking lot a few feet away and across the way, the shop is on a quiet residential street. Small and cozy, it feels good. I was greeted by a very friendly young woman who personifies good customer service. Ordered two sausage pasties, parked in that lot next to the library, and dug in: instant pleasure. Every bite was delicious. The pasty was warm, which seems the best way to eat one. Merely seven and a half bucks; what a bargain. One pasty satisfied me (I have tomorrow's lunch ready). This is a gem. A small neighborhood business that is devoted to its craft, really its art, of making truly good food. It now is on my list of go-to places. Highly recommended. read more

How dare I only rate Rocky's 4 stars instead of 5 stars! you must be saying. I apologize. I... have been to Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand in recent food memory. I am comparing Rocky's to an unusually high bar. And they compare favorably, let me tell you. So I should preface this by saying that if you are anywhere near North Jersey, these must be the best fresh pasties you can find. So, with that, I would like to frame this as constructively as possible: Dear Rocky, your pasties have too much potato, not enough meat. And the potatoes aren't always cooked enough - sometimes properly mushy, sometimes a bit crisp to the taste. Those are the main foibles here, and together I simply must dock a star. * Beef pasty: The staple, standard pasty is, to me, their weakest. But my sister liked it best and her husband liked it second best. In fact, we all had different opinions on all three varieties. In my view, the spices were great, but it had the most potato and the least meat of the three. * Chicken pasty: I rated it in the middle, my sister last, and my BIL tops. It was like a small chicken pot pie, but a little light on all the ingredients - the thick, crispy crust dominated the discussion. The gravy wasn't rich enough to hold up and the meat and vegetables had no dominant member to counterbalance. * Sausage pasty: My favorite, my BIL's least favorite, in the middle for my sister. They make their own kielbasa here, and that must be what goes into the sausage pasty, because the sausage was delectable. I savored every bite of this one, and I felt like it was the meatiest of the three as well. It also has a different crust batter that makes it orange-ish. Would I come back here? Yes. This is the first place in Wharton that's really lived up to expectations when I visited. Would I go out of my way to come here? I'll say that after having this, I went extolling the virtues of Empanada Lady to my family, and promised them I'd be back to show them the best meat-filled dough they've ever had. So, again, I'm putting Rocky's up against the best of the best because after almost 100 years, they've earned that responsibility. After reading reviews on Yelp, I had to try this place. How cool it was...it's from the 1920's and hasn't changed much! I'm really happy I tried it. As for the pasties, I had a beef and it was really good! I had actually just read about them in a book about the Midwest so it was very timely. Very unassuming location. Never have tried anything like this before. My order was one of each, sausage, beef, and chicken. Fav was sausage, but they were all delicious. I also got an order of stuffed cabbage that had to be the most tender roll I've ever had. The kielbasa is still in the fridge, but if it's like my other purchases, it will be fantastic. Rocky's Pasties has been a popular secret for over 85 years in the NJ town of Wharton. What are pasties and why Wharton??? A pasty is a meat and vegetable meal wrapped in a dough to form a manageable, hand held consumable meal without the concerns of reheating, transporting, etc...a complete ensemble. Think of a meat, vegetable, potato combination in a light gravy or broth stuffed into a baked flaky dough. Many cultures have this basic design from Chinese dumplings, South American empanandas, to this, the Cornish (English, Scott or Irish) Pasty. Finally, late in Dec 2009, I decided to pay this place a visit. As a take out only establishment, decor and ambiance do not matter. Their brief menu of 8oz pasties in Beef, Sausage, or Chicken were available to go as a hot item. Smaller sizes were only available frozen for you to heat at home. I tried both a beef and a sausage 8 oz. pasty. What's 8oz??? It's tremendously filling ! I overestimated my ability to eat. I immediately enjoyed the Sausage pasty as it was hot and fresh from Rocky's. The greatest impression was that of preparation with extremely fresh ingredients. The crust was hot, not overly flaky, but just right to contain the treats within. Potatoes were cubed, not diced, in large flavorfully fresh pieces. The sausage, to my surprise, was an Italian sausage. It was not overwhelming in flavor and combined well with the other ingredients. How did Rocky's manage to bend all the ingredients to permit each to meld to a proper flavor tone??? If more people appreciated this form of old fashioned fast food, McDonald's could have a run for their money. I enjoyed the the beef and sausage pasties equally. I had planned to photograph both the sausage and beef patties I purchased but, the sausage pasty did not survive the ride home. In fact, it was gone before I pulled out of my parking spot. Years ago, a Polish coworker from the Ukraine brought to my attention an article in The Star Ledger about this business. I simply love their sausage or chicken pasties. I'm from Europe as well as have visited England several times and just miss that spot on, delicious taste and quality here in NJ. Rocky's pasties are delicious, warm, flavorful, just like a grandma might make. Created with love, even the outside dough is both tender and crispy, and perfectly browned. All-around perfect lunch, picnic food, or handheld dinner. I can never seem to remember that I live 5 minutes away and don't eat them as much as I could/should! But Everytime I do, I love it. We drove the hour to try the Cornish pastie. I grew up eating Pasties in MN. My grandpa and uncle are even nicknamed Pastie. But the difference in our Pasties is that they are Welsh/English.. so I had to try it!! Well I was pleasantly surprised!!!! They were a tad bit different but the taste was still delicious. I am used to English Pasties made with stew meat, potato, onion, carrot and rutabaga. The Cornish Pasties were made with ground beef, potato and onion. Still very flavorful and yummy. Holds me off until I get back home to MN!! It was worth the hour drive. We bought 5 more to bring home for the freezer. I also bought a walnut roll which is the closest I can find to potica which is Slovenian for us. Again comparable but not near as flavorful on every bite. Still very very yummy!!! I realize the hard work put into both of these delicious foods so I appreciate it and can't wait to go back!! Oh and the pickles were an extra yummy bonus!! And the young man helping us---very kind!! Had the beef pastie. First time there trying it out. The beef pastie was excellent. Potatoes were soft and beef was good quality and just enough cooked onions for balance. Next time I'm there I'll order some for home. The only problem with this place is they only serve three types, Beef, Chicken and Italian Sausage. I was wondering if they were going to make all different kinds. Would like to see a variety of them. This place is not easy to find, it's off of Main Street. This is the best comfort food ever! If you live in Morris county you need to stop here at least once.

I call them the original Hot Pockets. I know that the correlation probably doesnt make them sound that appetizing, but I swear to you that these are worth the trip. They have 3 kinds. the original BEEF with potatoes and onions YUmm (just to let you know how good they are, my friend who is allergic to beef - drop a tear for her- ate one up after swallowing a benedryl because she decided it was worth the risk). Sausage with peppers and onions.. (in my opinion, the best) Chicken with peas carrots and potatoes and onion (like a chicken pot pie) I believe everything goes in raw and cooks and steams in its own juices... so good. This is a little hole in the wall place that you love to find because they usually have great food and with Rocky's you are correct. They only serve 3 things really, Beef, Sausage and Chicken pasties. What are pasties? They are like little "hot pocket" type deals good for lunch or to bring home in quantity, frozen, ready to bake fresh yourself. They are VERY tasty and worth the $4.25 they cost. They may seem small but will fill you up fast. I usually get two because i'm a pig like that... My boyfriend and I were staying in Rockaway, NJ for a few days and were browsing Yelp for delicious eats in the area as we often do. Up popped Rocky's Pasties once I clicked the 'best rated'. Pasties in New Jersey?! I was floored! I come from the U.P. of Michigan where pasties are a staple in the diet and you can buy them at dozens of shops and stores there but had yet to find a store even in NYC. Unfortunately I had to wait a few days because they're closed on Sundays and Mondays, but first thing Tuesday, we drive to the little shop and was greeted by a friendly young man who gave the rundown of what they carried. We each opted for a beef pasty at 5.50 a piece. Not too bad. They were different than what I grew up eating, but didn't disappoint. It was a great mix of beef, potato, onion and crust. (The ones back home have carrots and rutabaga as well and are much bigger for about the same cost.) This place is solid. Although a little different, it reminds me of home. This place has been in Wharton for decades and throughout the years their food has remained the same. These pasties are to DIE for. Get there early because sometimes they sell out. The most popular ones are sausage, chicken, and beef. I usually get one chicken and one beef! The chicken is very good as it consists of potatoes, peas, and carrots. The beef is also delicious consisting of onions and potatoes. This is by far the most original and unique spot in Wharton. It's the only place around I've found to get pasties. They are delicious. The best one I've ever actually had was a frozen one heated up in my Uncle's oven. Ketchup on the side is the way to go also (or not because they stand on their own). They do offer ones without onion but everything is limited to first come first serve. There are generally plenty. Pictures are pretty good but don't quite do it justice. Beef is best in my opinion but others are good too. The chicken is like eating chicken soup in a bread wrap. They also give you recommended reheating instructions which I find funny and unique but very nice to have. This is a family business my grandfather's gone to FOREVER and he still loves them. Not too many options so it's a place that you go to when you want a pastie. They offer a few sides and a few snacks but keep it simple. It's appreciated this day and age. Rather than having a large menu, they have a small selection of items made extremely well. Having read all the recommendations for the beef pasties, I immediately ordered one. We found a coupon online for $10 for a $20 worth of value. Definitely worth purchasing! We picked up a few frozen pasties as well as a peach dessert. My first bite into the pastry was like having a taste of home. Juicy, flavorful, chunks of onion, potato, it was heaven in a pie crust. I forgot to ask for ketchup, which I realized whilst driving away. The smell was too heavenly to wait the 10 minutes it would have taken to get home! Be sure to ask for ketchup before you leave. Very friendly and informative. Instructions were provided on how best to heat up and serve the frozen pasties. A very small store front, which is what you'd expect for such a family run gem. Pasties are a dough filled with Beef, Chicken or Sausage meat and potatoes, onions and different vegetables depending on the meat. This is a prepared food that can be purchased and eaten or purchased an reheated at a later time. In business since 1924 and owned by the same family since its opening it's a comfortable welcoming business. This is a take out only establishment. There is no seating area. I went to elementary school, right next door to "Rocky's". At lunch time, MOST of the Kids went over to "Rocky's". I now 'dating myself' - stating that: fries were either 5 cents/or, 10 cents (larger portion), & pasties - were ONLY 25 cents!! Who could afford these prices in the early 60's?! Of course, since I didn't have any $, I would "grub" all I could from friends. I remember well - Mom & Dad, who completely 'ran' the entire business at that time. They were both VERY NICE.
