It's on grilled sourdough and has smoked shredded tri-tip as well as onion rings in the sandwich. It was absolutely delicious. The potato salad on the side was good as well, but there was just too much food to eat at all. Concentrating on the sandwich seemed like the smart play. Lunch time on a very hot day. Ordered the Whiskey Burger with a side of potato salad. Cooked to medium as requested and potato salad was as good as it gets. Not sure why this restaurant only has a 3-Star rating... I just went here with my girlfriend's family, 5 of us, and the food was excellent. The only thing t bad with the food was that my girlfriend mom's chicken was a little overcooked, but that's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. I personally got the Cowboy 3-egg omelet, which was with cheese, ham, sausage and bacon, along with a side of Country potatoes, which were cooked excellently, imo, (I prefer them a little black and crunchy) and a biscuit. The biscuit was a little dry, but biscuits tend to be on the drier side if they don't come with a side of gravy. It came with butter instead. Which hey, a buttered biscuit is always good! The service of this place was great. The waitress that served us was fully energetic and enthusiastic which definitely helped create a fun experience. The vibes and ambiance of the restaurant were also really cool. It was like a time warp back in time to when this place was running as a Gold Rush town. There is also a sign outside the door that explains that a lot of their food is made the same way as when the Columbia was a Gold Rush town in the 1800s, but also some of there foods has a modern twist to it. We normally hit the pizza place when visiting so we figure we try something new, but wish we didn't! It wasn't busy but the wait time was very long, both to order our food and receive it. I ordered the French dip sandwich, my husband and I both took one bite and that was it. All you could taste was smoke. We both love a good Smokey flavor but this was so overpowering, almost even burnt tasting, we couldn't eat it. My husband got a buffalo chicken sandwich with potato salad which was also incredibly underwhelming. We will be sticking to St. Charles Saloon! read more

Waited a bit to be seated not because it was crowded staff were busy waiting their tables not sure if this is normal or short staffed. She arrived back with our drinks pretty quick shortly after another waitress stopped by to take our order she apologized and said she was not aware someone was at a table in her area. A friend and I flew to Columbia CA for the day. We stopped and had breakfast at the restaurant. The people were so very attentive, friendly, and nice. Something that is lost in the Sacramento area (despite paying them more per hour). Service with a smile. The atmosphere is 1860 decor and the staff are dressed for the period. The food here was served hot and fresh and just the way we liked it. The coffee hot and plenty of it. No complaints. The Bacon, cheddar, jalapeño waffle was incredibly delicious. Did you know "back in the day" the gold mining town of Columbia, CA was a candidate for the state capitol of California? Sacramento won out as the state capitol, but the town of Columbia is "capital" when it comes to fine dining in Tuloumne County, especially when you enjoy a fine meat at The Columbia House Restaurant, located in historic downtown Columbia, CA. As you enter the restaurant, you're greeted with a "Please Wait to be Seated" sign and a black board that advertises desserts, and another board that lists daily specials. No worries, as you'll be seated immediately by a member of the friendly staff. The Columbia House Restaurant, I assume, is owned by next door Bella Union Restaurant, and co-located Angelo's Hall, as Bella Union Restaurant seemed to have a strong presence in the dining room, and on the menu. The main dining room is pure rural "country," any way you look at it, and offers lots of table seating - with not a single booth - in a gold rush, historic atmosphere. The restaurant offers a second dining room, separated from the main dining room by a low partition. Like the main dining room, it offers comfortable seating and an "old school" atmosphere. Columbia is a historic mining town that dates from the California gold rush of 1849. At Columbia House Restaurant, the hospitality staff dresses in 1850's period fashion, to add to the rustic, historic ambiance of the restaurant, and the town of Columbia. I think the historic clothes also add a little "spice" to the amazing cuisine. From the "House Specialties" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "Gold Digger," which truly seems to be a delicious and exclusive dish of this restaurant. The menu advertises he "Gold Digger" as, "Bacon, jalapeño and cheddar waffle, with sausage gravy and two eggs." Naturally, the eggs are cooked to your liking, and I chose my eggs to be fried sunnyside up. My friendly hostess asked me if I wanted maple syrup on the side, as I declined, as the gravy was what I was after. This amazing breakfast began on a full-size waffle - made from scratch and perfectly grilled - which was cut into four squares. This was not your "mom's" waffle or the waffle you recall enjoying at the diner around the corner, as this waffle was infused with bacon, jalapeño pepper and Cheddar cheese. This is a "Columbia unique" waffle! This delicious waffle definitely had a "Mexican" slant to it... The waffle was topped with a generous helping of thick, "country gravy" which added a total WOW factor to the breakfast. Think of thick, rich, in-house made country gravy with lots of chunky sausage and sprinkled with black pepper. And... this amazing breakfast of waffle and gravy was topped with two perfectly fried eggs, sunnyside up, as I ordered. The steak knife served with the breakfast was simply "window dressing" as the waffle was fork-tender. Alright, I confess that I added a sprinkle of salt to my eggs, along with a dash or two of black pepper. This was simply a delicious and unique breakfast and I loved every bite. The thought of a waffle topped with sausage gravy might sound a bit weird, but throw in the jalapeño pepper and Cheddar cheese to the waffle, and you have a "griddle classic" breakfast, at The Columbia House Restaurant. The Columbia House Restaurant serves amazing "gold country" cuisine, served by friendly staff, in a historic and comfortable dining room. I must say that Izzy, our waitress, was phenomenal! Went twice in the span of 3 weeks. We have to drive about 90 minutes to get there but both times it was worth it. The food was tasty, service was excellent, and ambiance was fun - Izzy spun some cotton candy for my youngest and we got to watch her prepare Cherries Jubilee dessert for the table next to us. We were also treated to music played on the piano by 2 gentlemen. The other waitress, Stephanie, was also very pleasant. We were hosting an exchange student from Japan and wanted to give her an American experience - seeing Columbia State Park, having chili dogs, corn dogs and French fries, etc. Izzy and this spot did not disappoint with their hospitality. We dined at the recent recently and it was fine. Despite it being a little crowded in Columbia the hostess had us seated quickly and our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. The food was good. My husband and I had burgers and our kids had hot dogs. It was nothing spectacular but not bad either. My reason for leaving a mediocre review was because of another waitress. She was speaking to the hostess with such contempt I was actually shocked. The hostess was doing her best managing all the groups coming in and the waitress was ripping into her in front of everyone. While we were eating the hostess was helping clear a table and the waitress, who was not serving anyone on our side of the restaurant, walked over and started getting angry with the hostess again. Management if you're listening, the waitress with a nose ring was treating your hostess with dark hair so terribly that it actually disturbed our lunch. No one should be talked to like that in the workplace or elsewhere. I sure hope the nasty behavior is addressed. read more

First I will say our waitress was very sweet just lacked in being attentive to customers. We were seated at a horrible wobbly table and liquid all over it, was able to stuff a napkin under it and steady it some and wipe up the water. (The hostess that sat us saw my husband point out the water and just walked away). There were 4-5 other tables seated. After a few minutes drink orders were taken and received pretty quickly. Began placing our order and immediately "out of Mac and cheese" and waitress suggested the loaded fries instead so we settled for that and pulled pork nachos. 5-10 minutes later informed that they were out of pulled pork. So said just the fries. Waited 30 minutes for a small plate of Hawaiian loaded fries that had obviously been sitting while cause the cheese was hard and fries soggy. Not once were we asked if we needed anything else, when were we done with the fries finally asked if we wanted another drink or anything else. We had no napkins and never brought any - I had to get up and go grab some myself from the service counter. This place was recommended to us by another merchant- I would say not a good one. Service was pretty lacking and food at a fast food quality but slow as snails to receive. Maybe just an off day hopefully. read more

We came up to Columbia to the playhouse to see the play "Clue" Which was fantastic. The town usually rolls up the sidewalks at 8 for any food, but the Columbia house was smart to take the people getting out of the play at 8:30. It was a Cinco de Mayo celebration in town also. We first got a quick appetizer before the play, excited to try the "Elote" or Street corn they had as a special for the celebration. It was a tiny cup of cold corn! Very disappointed. Being that it was the only place for food open after the play, we came back to give a second chance. We were pleased to be welcomed in. They only had the specials left of carnitas or birea street tacos, or ceviche. We ordered it all. The tacos had tons of onions on that I had to pick off the majority as there was so much. They were good otherwise. The ceviche was pretty bad. Served in a fried flour tortilla, 1 shrimp, some imitation crab and old tomatoes that weren't even chopped up, cucumber and zucchini in a crest sweet marinade. They tried to charge us $22 for it and I had to point out that it was only $18 on the menu. Not worth it though and they need to scratch that one. Seriously the best part of the place and the gem was a sweet server named Abby. She was attentive, smiling and friendly and deserved 5 stars, so the 3 are because of her and they were open after hours. We will have to come back to try the regular menu. The Columbia House Restaurant/Bella Union. We went Wednesday night for their Valentine's Day special menu. The food was outstanding! I'm a total food snob and I thought they did a great job! You can't beat the price either, only $100 for 2 people for 4 courses. I highly recommend the short ribs with red wine reduction sauce. The pork chop with black cherry wine sauce on couscous was great too! The new (2 years ago)owners have really improved the food. If you haven't been for awhile, check it out! They are serving this special menu all weekend and you can find the menu on their page. So happy to have a "fine dining" option close to home. read more

My wife and I ate there nothing ago, she ordered a chefs salad and she does not eat pork, she asked the waitress to substitute the ham for more turkey instead. I ordered the California chicken sandwich. The chicken was bland, not even a slight of seasoning, salt and pepper would have been nice. My wife's salad was as she had order it, however, when I got the tab, the waitress added a $3.00 charge for extra turkey? Really? She never once mentioned that we were going to be charge extra for the substitution. When I questioned the extra charge the waitress told me that it was the owners policy to charge extra for substitutions, well! Stopped in with the family for a snack while taking in the sights and found the atmosphere nice as well as the a/c on this warm day. The wait staff was pleasant and reasonably attentive given they were fairly busy. They approach us to get our order in early to beat the two larger groups that had just come in ahead of us and that advice definitely shaved some time off our wait. We ordered a French dip sandwich, bratwurst and pulled pork nachos for my wife and I to split. The sandwiches were decent, but nachos were simply something they should be ashamed of. They consisted of a good sized handful of salted tostitos that we're on the edge of becoming stale with about 3 tablespoons of unseasoned pulled pork and approximately 2 tablespoons each of olives, onions and jalapenos with nacho cheese. Since my wife and I shared the nachos they charged us a split plate fee which wasn't the end of the world but it did seem like a little extra kick in the seat given how bad the nachos were. Honestly, after reading all of these reviews I am disappointed in the people who wrote them. My girlfriend and I went up to go hiking and camped at Marble Quarry campsite. We decided to go o breakfast and found this place was open. We were seated in a timely manner and let me tell you, they were busy with only one server working. He was going back and forth from table to table, from serving food, to refilling drinks, to taking orders, to cashing people out, everything. I felt bad for him, but was proud of how he kept up with all of the tables. He was very friendly, and apologized for it being busy. We told him it was fine and we had no rush. When our food came out it was very fresh and hot. It was very tasty, and yummy. I am in awe of how well this young man and one cook handled the breakfast rush alone. Great jobs guys!!! read more

Ate here yesterday 3-24-23. The place is not terrible but at the same time nothing special. It was only slightly busy and the service was soooooo slow. No reflection on the waitress who was working very hard and all alone. Management needs to staff properly to take care of paying customers. From where I was sitting I could see a constant parade of people come in, wait and wait like we did and then just leave after not being seated. Coffee mugs were big and the coffee got cold really fast. Took at least 45 minutes to get our food. I had the Thai wrap which was the special. Although good, it was very dry.....needed more peanut sauce. I could barely taste it. Fries were barely luke warm and they tasted like pancakes. They had some sort of batter on them and did not taste like potatoes. My husband ordered an Omlette which was mediocre, a very un-remarkable meal but edible. The place is historic and has the potential to be quaint and a return destination but there's just nothing special here right down to the dishes. The wait to be seated and get food was just plain aggravating and the food was just not special! Again, nothing terrible but we'll stick with our our breakfast place on the main road into town. The waitress was amazing, nice and a real trooper which is why I have 3 stars instead of 2.
