If you want to bypass the preface describing how I ended up visiting Columbus Cyclery (I live in the peninsula), simply scroll down to the "Bottom Line" section. *** PREFACE *** Recently, I had a hankering to build up a bike that I could use for riding on paved roads as well as well-packed trails. A key constraint for this build was a desire to build up a bike that utilized rim brakes (specifically, V-brakes) versus disc brakes. Consequently, I knew that my search would be best served by searching for an older (i.e., "vintage") used bike. While perusing bike listings on Craigslist, my search results yielded a listing for Columbus Cyclery with the headline, "Over 300 Used and New Bikes". As serendipity would have it, I clicked on the listing and followed the link to Columbus Cyclery's website. On the site, I noticed an option to enter a lottery to win a new bike. After looking through the selection of available road/gravel bikes, I made a mental note to visit the store so that I could test ride a handful of bikes that, on paper, made for good candidates for my road/gravel build project. Before closing the browser tab, I decided to submit an entry for the "Win a Bike" lottery. The following week, I was pleasantly surprised to receive text and email messages from the owner of Columbus Cyclery (Bruno), who informed me that I had won the "free bike" lottery!!! I sent a text message to Bruno to thank him and to let him know that I would not be able to come to the store for another two weeks. Bruno kindly informed me that I could take my time and to come in any day (except for his day off) so that I could pick out a bike. Long story long, I visited the shop and spent a few hours looking through the large collection of bikes and test riding a handful of bikes before settling on a road bike that could accommodate tires with a relatively wide contact patch. As part of my visit, I brought my vintage Raleigh Team Issue mountain bike for a much-needed tune-up. During my initial and follow-up visits to Columbus Cyclery, the owner of the store (Bruno) was extremely kind and accommodating. He allowed me to take my time looking through the large collection of new and used bikes in the store and, along with one of the mechanics (Jay), patiently answered my questions before and after each test ride that I took. Columbus Cyclery reminds me of the independently-owned bike shops that I used to visit during my mountain bike racing and triathlon days. There's a complete lack of pretense that puts customers at ease. [RANT] Unlike several bicycle shops in the peninsula (typically resellers for select bike manufacturers), Columbus Cyclery has zero snobbish airs about it. From my handful of visits and my limited observations of customer interactions during my visits, Bruno and his team appear to extend the same level of courtesy and support to customers with high-end bicycles as well as customers with older/vintage (i.e., "less fancy") bicycles. Case in point: Whenever I would bring my trusty mountain bike steed (1999 Raleigh Team Issue) or my road bike (2005 Felt F-55), for a tune-up to other bike shops (that shall remain unnamed), I would, invariably, receive an earful of unsolicited advice regarding the benefits of carbon fiber frames and disc brakes. Though I have a deep appreciation for the simplicity of "vintage" bikes, I wouldn't classify myself as a "cycling curmudgeon" -- I have an appreciation for all types of bikes, both old and new. That said, I will admit that I have a very low tolerance for bike snobbery. [/RANT] On a handful of occasions, some bike store managers and mechanics went out of their way to incessantly point out the antiquated nature of my bikes. This was not the case with Bruno and his team (especially one of his mechanics, Jay) as they seemed to appreciate the quirkiness of my vintage mountain bike, which I originally ordered with an unpainted frame. *** BOTTOM LINE *** During my visits to the shop, Bruno and one of his mechanics (Jay) were always very welcoming and extremely patient in answering all of my bike-related questions (including several questions that bordered on geeky). I greatly appreciate the courtesy consistently extended to me as well as the relatively quick turnaround on bike tune-ups. If you have a need for a new or used bike, a bike rental, a bike tune-up, or a quick bike fix, check out Columbus Cyclery. My recommendation definitely applies if you want to bring an older or lower-end bike in for a tune-up or fix, and you wish to avoid the possibility of dealing with snobby, unsupportive shop owners/managers/mechanics. My recommendation also applies if you simply want to indulge your inner bike geek to check out a large collection of new and older/vintage bikes from various manufacturers. The parking can be challenging during the weekend, so consider taking advantage of the numerous coffee, pastry, and dining options in the area. read more

Came here to pick up a bike for my partner, as he wanted to try getting into fixed gear riding + needed a lighter bike overall (he previously had a 50+ lb schwinn continental from like 1972). The man at the counter (I don't believe we got his name but he seemed to run the place) was super friendly and helpful, let us test ride a few bikes around the block, and we got a really solid bike for a super reasonable price. He even helped us install different pedals free of charge! Definitely recommend if you want a good used bike for a good price. read more

Amazing price! Will surely recommend it to my other friends. About one year ago, my friend's bike got a broken cassette on the golden gate bridge and we walk the bike here, only took us 70 dollars to get it fixed with a new shimano. Today, I hear some strange noise from my bike and took a caltrain from palo alto to here, it is for sure worth the travel. The tune-up here saved me more than 150 bucks. read more

My dad went there for flat tires. When he got home that day, tire went flat. He went back next day to fix it and paid another $25. I don't really know what kind of work the man did on the bike but thought it was pretty odd to get flat tires the same day. Anyway, another flat occured on the bike within a few days, so he went back to the store and asked for a bit of discount. The man, called himself a manager told me he is sick and tired of my dad coming into store asking for a discount when his hands were so tired with flood of customers. He had audacity to say these things to a customer. My dad is elderly, handicapped and on a fixed income, so it would have been only natural to ask for a discount when tires went flat 3 times within a week, especially having been a patron to this place. The both man in the shop had mistreated my dad before but my dad overlooked it but I couldn't put up with this rude, condescending and obnoxious behavior any longer. I read other 1 star reviews here and come to realize that this shop could indeed be practicing con activities. Wish there was an option for 0 star. Go elsewhere or be taken for a ride. I only tried to give business to a local shop. They have done tune-up very quickly, so I have been their customer for years. When my bike was stolen, I desperately needed a new one. The manager was only keen on selling used bikes, then he pawned me to a store staff and walked away. I have never met a store manager who is indifferent of sales. He was very condescending when I mentioned my budget is $500 (There are lots of bikes cost less than $500 on the internet. He should check it out). I would not go to the shop unless I have no choice. read more

Phenomenal bike shop in a wonderful North Beach location! I bought my HJM Toury e-bike from here last year and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Not only is the bike a blast, but the service from Columbus Cyclery has been tremendous. Example: I fell off my bike one day and the chain got totally messed up. I used my electric throttle to hurry to the shop and showed up with cuts on my arms and legs. They were about to close but I was desperate, and I think they understood that. They fixed my chain for me while helping me patch up and clean my wounds. I am forever grateful for their friendly staff and impeccable service! They got this riding nicer than any bike I've owned before and the setup fees were very reasonable. They also helped me about a week after I left the shop when I got new grips. I recently bought a new e-bike about a month ago and prob due to the sf hills I needed a break adjustment. Well I went to a shop on market street and made an appt to fix ( I apparently missed my appointment) got my days mixed up. I was very apologetic and he said if I brought it in now he might be able to fix it. I said sure and brought it in . I'm getting to the point. Well after a short while he texted me and said he couldn't work on it... it was too heavy and a few other excuses. He said I had shotty mismatch parts and got frustrated and gave up. ANYWAY. I left feeling like I made a bad purchase and got a piece of shit bike. Well... I was riding my bike in my new area and passed Columbus cyclery and thought let's see if they could fix. The worker JAY said yes and it should be about 30 min and $35. I did not tell him of my experience the day before. I came back not expecting it to be fixed but lo and behold it was.not problem whatsoever no comments about the bike except I'm good for about another 3 months before a replacement . I left him a nice tip and some chocolates and thanked him. I went home and the bike worked very well I had to call the owner and give them their props. I walked in and simply done. Great service. Now I won't list the other bike repair because he was nice I just think he was frustrated with me I missed an appt came the next day he was rushed. People have bad days. OK, but didn't put the RIM STRIP BACK ON RIGHT, INSTANT FLAT ON INSIDE OF TUBE, 40 mins into ride. - Adjust Front and Rear Derailleurs..... MAJOR FAILED, chain still rubs in Front sprocket, gears still don't switch to next gear on Rear Derailleur. - Adjust Front and Rear Brakes..... The shop destroyed my bike frame during a Groupon tune-up. The inside of the carbon seat tube is crushed, and it's split on the outside. I didn't notice it until a few weeks after the service, but the bike is otherwise brand new and has never crashed, tipped over, etc. My best guess is they pulled the seat post up until 3" were left in the frame, clamped the post in a repair stand, and pushed the bike handlebar down, levering the bottom rim of the seat post into the seat tube. I can't prove it though. R.I.P. $2000 bike. read more

Happened to stop by during covid-19 looking for a specific bike type for my wife, cruiser bike with tire size 24 and color of light or baby blue. Sadly they did not have the bike I wanted for sale, but I did see one that was being serviced if not was used as a rental. They had two floors first floor mixed of slightly used and more user and few new. On the right women's used bikes on the left mix of mens and rentals if not serviced bikes. Second floor is mountain bikes, there were several options to choose from, I am surprised of all stock that they have, I did not see any bikes under $100 mark, but from what I saw most of the bikes were in working order, oiled, no rust on gears, somewhat maintained. Not perfect you can see the usage but still worth the buy. If I have to come back for a secondary bike this is where I would come. I took BART from Berkeley to SF on New Year's Day for a bike adventure with my four-year-old on the Yepp. About two minutes into my ride down the Embarcardero, I got a significant puncture in the front tire of my Van Moof X3. The tire was flat in about two minutes. Columbus cyclery was the closest shop. I managed to slowly pedal there. I showed up before they opened and the owner saw me and my daughter outside and he let us in! My front tire had anti-theft hardware so the tire couldn't be removed but that didn't stop them from fixing it. The owner and another mechanic gave me 100% of their attention immediately and managed to get the tube out and patch it with the tire still on the bike. They were so friendly and helpful and had me back on the road in 20 minutes. Saved my day. Highly recommend this place for its excellent service and humanity. Saved my day! read more

I recently moved to North Beach, SF and needed to commute to work via bike. When I realized my bike needed a major tune-up, Columbus Cyclery was the perfect place to bring it. They communicated the whole time they had my bike (less than 24 hours), and made sure I knew what they were doing to it and what they were charging for. It also was not as expensive as other places I looked at. I was very impressed and entered the raffle to win a free bike and won it! This raffle is no strings attached, all you have to do is take a picture for their website! When I went in to claim it, the entire staff was so friendly in walking me through everything I needed to know. They let me test ride a few bikes, and were very patient and helpful. Women beware. They just tried to swindle me with unnecessary repairs. Not to be one of the entitled "wahhh they didn't kiss up to me" posters. I don't care about that. My problem here is that this is the same behavior shady auto mechanics display toward female customers. I value not being swindled. I have no idea what kind of work they actually do. I went in needing a tune up and a new tire. When it came to the tire I told them what was wrong and they proceeded to completely ignore what I was saying and tell me other problems that didn't exist, ones which would not have caused the issue it's causing, and which definitely would have required me to buy unnecessary pieces. We didn't even get to the tune up. They were barely even letting me finish a sentence so I told them never mind, that I was uncomfortable with them not seeming to understand what I was saying and that I'd go find somewhere else. Their response was to order the female worker on the floor to open the door and make sure I got out. I was already heading out the door. I looked over and the one issued me a sarcastic "bye-bye". I asked the chick that opened the door if he's always this much of an asshole and she gave me a slightly weary "you're fine." She seemed like she deals with this behavior regularly. I hope she finds a better boss soon. Being a public facing worker myself I make effort to treat others well and mind my P's and Q's when receiving services. The only thing I can see having done wrong here is not falling for dishonest business. I'm sure different gonads would have yielded a far different experience. read more

Tai did a great job repairing my bicycle at a low cost. I had a repair that I took the bike in for. The wait was a bit long, but after others had been helped, I was up. Tai asked what I needed. I explained that I wanted a component added. He provided an accurate estimate of the costs. He then provided a claim check and told me it would be ready in 2-3 days. The next morning I got a call from him saying the bike was ready. I went in to pick it up. I once again waited, but soon Tai brought out the bike. The new component was professionally installed. Tai also performed a minor tune-up at no extra charge. He noticed a couple things that needed to be done, and went ahead and did them. I really appreciate service providers like this. I also asked about two more repairs. One he said wasn't necessary and showed me why. The other he performed while I waited. More businesses need to be run like Columbus Cyclery. Why 3 star rating: 132 dollars and my 2nd gearing was/is not catching smoothly at all. My hand grips were not cleaned like I had asked for. They wanted to charge me a storage fee even though it was completed 2.5 weeks early like they said. My bike was missing a tire valve cap and when I mentioned it, the tech said ok but these are scarce here. As if for me to feel lucky I'm getting ...... a tire valve cap? I love small businesses and independent shops because they treat you like you really matter. All 3 dudes were super kind and helpful despite being busy, shop has an amazing selection at great prices. I found this shop on Craigslist while looking for a bicycle trade. A buddy from church gave me a nice Roubaix for a triathlon but he is super tall and it was too big. I brought my bike to another shop in Castro Valley and decided it's best to visit at least two shops. GLAD I DID! I got the perfect bike, a true beauty and performance machine at a phenomenal price. I was given a great trade-in value for my bike and have the peace of mind knowing these guys have my back for cycling needs. The experience was great, location is really nice being two blocks from the famous Lombard Street, there is tons of parking nearby, just watch that meter. I LOVE the fact that even though it took me about 4 weeks to finally ride my bike due to the Bay Area weather recently, Bruno took care of me when I noticed a bad link in the chain. He honored his warranty - when I brought the bike in they were slow enough to replace it right away. They also have a great selection of parts and accessories both new and used in case you want to save a few bucks. I bought a new Kryptonite Evolution U Lock and a used Red-LED Tail light which they installed. Since I was new to cycling I was worried I would be taken for a ride, no pun intended, by any shop or salesman. Thankfully Columbus Cyclery appeared on my triathlon journey. I've gone here around 4 different times and I'd give the level of customer service a 10/5 if I could. I bought my first road bike with the interest of wanting to do a triathlon, and despite the nerves, Bruno took me through the beginner ropes of understanding the bike I had, finding my appropriate seat height, and walking me slowly through how to use the gears. He kept it real and you could tell how much he cared about making sure the customer felt comfortable. I also recently got my bike stuck using an old lock and called up the shop. Richard went out of his way to bike down from the shop to meet me where I was to help me get the lock off. It was going beyond and above. These guys are the best! read more

I came here to get my wheels replaced after both of them were stolen! They taught me how to correctly lock my bike. Look up how to lock out both your wheels+ to the post with just a u lock and a cable with a noose! They were so patient and kind with all the customers that walked in while I wanted. the three workers there were all so quirky and friendly. Great bike rental shop, no drama, friendly staff. My biking companion and I rented bikes this past weekend to take ride through the Italian Heritage Parade(!) on Columbus, down to Fisherman's Wharf and traversing the park and up the hills leading to Golden Gate Bridge and crossed the bridge. Although they sell maps here, each bike came with a big zip up box pouch in front and there was a map inside! We were told the ride was over 4 miles one way. We ended up having the bikes for around 4 hours, riding approximately 10 miles total with stops along the way, mostly to take in the sights of the bay, particularly to watch the Blue Angels fly above us overhead as it was SF Fleet Weekend. Just beautiful. Some of the hills leading up to the Golden Gate Bridge get kind of steep, but they are doable in low gear for someone who doesn't bike regularly, like me, as I typically only bike on vacation. Got a bit exhausted as we approached the bridge but didn't collapse or come close. We were told by the shop that there is a bike path on the bridge, and there was! You can even make stops along the bridge; just pull over safely. I appreciate that they had a bike that was very comfortable for my petite 5-foot-2 frame. The bikes cost $8 an hour, but they max out the rental fee at $27. Helmets are included. read more

I can only speak for purchasing bikes here, I've never rented from them. Bruno, the owner, is the man! Super knowledgable and helpful. After hunting and hunting for a road bike, I finally stumbled across this spot. They let you freely test ride their bikes on Greenwich Street. This is because they want test riders to have a flatter ground to really test the bike (you know, San Francisco hills and all, lol). We test rode for about 20-25 minutes, they didn't check up on us at all. After much thought, I decided the pricing was decent and that this bike was for me! There was a few super-duper-tiny cosmetic scratches on the bike from previous test riders. Bruno was willing to lower the price and throw in some handlebar tape to compensate. They do have a warranty service and free tune ups for bikes you buy from them also! Go Bike It is family owned and everyone here is so friendly!
