The main event here are the 7 special rice plates that are fully loaded. You can pick different proteins but my go to is anything bbq'd. Each of these plates comes with a side of veggies, fried shrimp cake, shredded pork skin, egg cake, bbq shrimp and grilled shrimp meat on a sugar cane. I can't believe I've driven by Com Tam Dat Thanh so many times in my history of Sactown living and have never stepped into this delightful mom and pop shop serving up com tam and pho at a level surely near the pinnacle of the little saigon scene! It's a humble place with typical classic Vietnamese restaurant vibes, but the food is what matter and this place is it. The Com Tam (rice plate) is definitely their specialty, and the quality and flavors they serve up is superb. The shrimp paste cake is one of my faves and they fry it up nice and crispy in tofu skin, and the cake is nice and thick and piping hot. The BBQ pork is super flavorful and doesn't even need any fish sauce dippin. I had to try the pho out of curiousity if a Com Tam place could make a good pho, and yessiree it was very good indeed. The soup was super hot as it needs to be when u have a nice pile of rare beef on top that needs to cook. The broth has a good solid beef flavor but I think personally I would prefer it a bit saltier. Plenty of noodles and all the fixin's and it did not disappoint. Service is stoic and solid, typical of Asian mom and pop joints, so don't be expecting the In-n-Out "Hi, how are ya!" type greeting. But if you know what to expect it is fine and acceptable. Be aware they take Visa and not Mastercard, which is a rarity these days, but most people carry both so no problemo.
