Growing up in South Phoenix, much of the community ranted and raved about this place. I was always under the impression that it was a mariscos (seafood) and bar type place, which I'm not a huge fan of. I was totally wrong! Both had a great flavor to them (marinaded) and tasted as though it had just come off the grill. Not to mention, the rice and beans were on point! Want some authentic Mexican food? You have to stop by this place! On another note, my grandparents mentioned that this place is ALWAYS busy! They said wait times can be well over an hour with people waiting inside and outside the restaurant, but they say it's worth the wait! Thankfully, we only had to wait 20 minutes because we went during Memorial weekend. Everyone was out of town during that time, so it was not busy. As for the service, it was okay. Our waiter was hardly attentive to us. My family had to catch his attention most of the time by waving their hand or calling him out when he passed by. Although only one bowl of chips and salsa are complementary, it's delicious with very spicy salsa. The margarita was large, and pretty good! It was very strong, but tasted sweet. Today, we visited my dad's favorite spot to eat on Sunday's. In all fairness, I've never truly liked the food in this place and as I return today, it sorta reminded me why. The wait is just ridiculous, 45 minutes to an hour to get seated. They have a limit to the party size 15 max and if it more than 6 people the don't split checks. So, be prepared to over pay for your meal if you are in a large group. The salsa is delicious with just the right amount of spice (not recommended for mild salsa folks) and chips warm chrispy with a pinch of salt...just great. Here is the downside...you only get 1 complimentary small bowl with about 10 or so chips. If you wish to have more you need to pay $1.25 per small bowl. It's like 10 +/- cents per chip for those who wanna get really technical. Fast forward 22 minutes and my meal is not here yet....we ran out of chips 15 minutes ago. They would keep people happier if they would keep the tiny bowl of chips full while we wait. The place looks clean, the tables are well spaced out and the restroom are acceptable although I didn't see the women's facilities. They could rethink their layout since there's a few folks in either single or party of 2 sitting on rather large tables. The noise level is manageable. The music is at a low volume enough to hear it and still be able to hear others in your party. 47 minutes later the food arrived...be careful with the plates...they are extreme hot and will burn you if you touch it. I ordered the steakpicado with eggs and it was a small portion for the $16.00 price and corn tortillas are hard and very dry. The issue was getting my eggs to match my order. They went back n forth multiple times until they finally listened to my request to flip the over to cook on both sides. The shrimp enchiladas were good too but the rice was very dry and the beans tasted old. All in all, I don't recommend this place and it didn't meet my palates standards as a known foodie. They are pricey for the portions and they really don't breakoff the Americanized standard for Mexican Food restaurants. Lack that true authentic Mexican food flavor. The staff are attentive and once you are don't eating they are quick to clear your table and get you out the door. We have a national company and after surgery someone in Florida asked if there was a way to get real "green chile" sauce as comfort food while our colleague recovered from major surgery. Typical Mexican parrilladas come with queso fundido, baked potatoes, cebollitas, and a bunch of meat in separate sections on a skillet.... this was not that. This was still a skillet but the meat was all mixed together and covered in a mountain of onion, red peppers, and jalapeños. No cheese, no potato. They did bring a plate of rice (good) and refried beans (not good). The meat all tasted the same because it was mixed. The tortillas it comes with.... you get one giant tortilla per person so you have to tear it and make little makeshift tacos.
