This a review for the Improv Classes only. This is my story. I signed up for the Improv 101 classes. This was all new to me. Thought it would be fun. I live in the rural area outside of Minneapolis, so I drove 40 minutes to enjoy fun and create comedy with other non-comedy people. Other average people. Not what happened. Let me explain... This is all new to me. So, during one of the warm-up exercises. It was the one-word poem exercise. Sounds cool. The fours words leading up to me, were, "The"..."Cows"... "Were"... "Making"... Which then left me to think up a word that kept the poem alive... I picked the word "Whoopie". The room stopped. 3 to 4 people in the group, which told me that the word Whoopie was inappropriate, and I needed to change the word choice right away. They all had urgency in their voices... I was taken aback... What? My word "Whoopie" caused you to stop everything? I was only doing what felt natural. I was told by 4 people that my improv was wrong. I needed to change my word choice. WTF? Really? Whoopie? Woke people are everywhere. They stand and make you feel shamed into thinking just like them. No more free expression. All this shaming because of the word Whoopie? If you're thinking of taking Improv classes at Comedy Sportz. Read what I've experienced and go if you want. I'm totally off this group. Nothing personal Comedy S, your people are too judgmental of everyone outside their circle. I said the word, WHOOPIE? REALLY? ComedySportz is AMAZE-BALLS! Seeing everyone perform is just so impressive--they are all so hilarious and talented. It was so much fun laughing for an hour-plus during the show--definitely a great ideas for parties, nights out, work events, etc. I also took Improv 101 and 201 and look forward to taking 301. I have never done any improv before, so it was scary, but the instructors are so kind and encouraging, and they kept us laughing throughout the class. They are so personable that they make it an easy and comfortable class to grow and make mistakes in. Good, clean, gut-bustingly funny family fun! These fully improvised shows are different every time. It's amazing how to watch how fast the performers think and react and come up with scenes on the fly. The audience gives them subjects to work with, then they riff from there. They make a point of stating up front that it's a family-friendly show and anyone who doesn't respect that (cast and/or audience) has to wear a brown bag over their head for the rest of the skit. While the view from all seats are actually ok, I'd recommend avoiding the first few rows since the stage is so close. If you like staring at feet and kneecaps, then disregard, otherwise try something in the middle and back (either side) This was my second time at C.S. and I enjoyed it. Cant recall what I saw the first time around, but this time I went to see The Main Event on a Saturday night. The improv actors along with the emcee (a.k.a) referee and "d.j" a.k.a announcer did a really good job entertaining and engaging the audience. For several of the skits they solicited the crowed for the topics, phrases, etc. and boy did they have some tough ones thrown at them. However, taking it in stride and doing the best they could...they managed to put it all together and keep me (and the crowd) laughing. My only challenge for the night was following the points system they utilized for game. The Main Event was basically a competition where two teams competed for laughs while sticking to certain rules. Points were awarded for various reasons (i.e.; most applause, guessing correctly, etc.). However, 8/10 the system for getting points made no sense to me. Therefor, I just disregarded that part of the game and just focused on the content which allowed me to just enjoy the comedic experience. Although I'm rating C.S. as OK for now, I'd recommend it to others. I'd also suggest they stop by Amazing Thailand afterwards for late night HH and interesting (in a good way) ambiance. read more

First of all, the location is excellent. It is right in Calhoun Square in Uptown so it is very convenient if you are planning a night on the town. I had a group of people come for my birthday party and we stopped for appetizers & drinks at the Independent first. Then we teetered upstairs for the show (we reserved tickets which was super convenient). I have been there on a date as well. Both shows were funny, good quality comedy. What's harder than being funny on command in front of people? Being funny without relying on shock value or profanity. Really a skill. I'm going to echo everyone below who was skeptical coming here, who has high comedy standards, and didn't think they'd like clean comedy. Me too. Me neither. Yes. My husband and I (late 20s, love stand-up) came here on a Saturday night, and we could not have had a better time. Yes, there were some kids in the crowd. I didn't have a problem with that. I was laughing aloud almost continuously. These people are inherently, naturally, hilarious. You just can't teach what they have. I'll definitely be back, and I might bring my 8-year-old. This would be great for all ages. I'd go here for a girls' night or for a family outing. read more

I've only been to this Comedysportz arena once and while I was very pleased with the entertainment, I wasn't too hot on the seating arrangements because the chairs on the main floor are just--weird. Maybe in the summer it wouldn't be so bad because it's just you in the chair and invading the personal space of the person next to you isn't an option. But in the wintertime, the combination of human + jacket on one chair jammed so closely next to other human + jacket combinations was just too much for me to handle. I will say that once the show got going, the chair issue bothered me less and less because I was laughing so hard. That's probably the point. read more

DISCLAIMER----i probably shouldn't even be writing a review--- But we fully intended to attend the show... but.... We got scared because of all the 10 year olds waiting in line with their parents and running around the lobby area. Not to mention the box office guy telling us we have to get in the ticket "rush" line... because you can't buy tickets at the door. so we look over at the rush sign.... cue the tumbleweed.... there is not a SOUL in the line. Almost felt like that scene with Ben Stiller in MEET THE PARENTS..... where the flight attendant won't let him board the plane and there is NOT A SOUL waiting to board but him. genius. anyway... i am sure the comedy is great... but an 8:00 show on a saturday with more 4th graders than adults is a MAJOR turn off. just saying... read more

Great, CLEAN humor. To find live comedy that isn't raunchy these days is a hard thing to do. And to find clean comedy that isn't corny or cheesy is almost just as hard. Comdedysportz is hilarious and it's clean fun humor. I've been there for birthday parties, bachelorette parties, and cheap fun dates. It's like $8 for one ticket. That's awesome! The comedians are REALLY TALENTED and FUNNY! I have no idea how they do it; but they are so quick on their toes. I recommed this for people of all ages; I have really enjoyed this wonderful little spot in Uptown. read more

I thought this would be a good spot for a girls night to get some laughs prior to a night out. Sadly, I was dissapointed. The laughs were far and few in between. I actually had more fun people watching than watching the "actors". I will say, they did a good job with what they had. The topics/games were not very funny to me. I guess I like the "non clean" comedy a lot better. Ticket sales accept credit cards but their concessions (wine and bottles of beer) are cash only. One sign that this may not be my type of show, was the 7 & 8 year olds attending with their parents on a Saturday night. Maybe their few "non-clean" comedy nights will be better, but I won't be going back any time soon. If you are planning on attending with grandparents, parents, and little kids; this would be a decent spot to go to. However, I don't think $12 is worth the show. read more

Oh man, CSZ, I less than three you so much! I've been going for over ten years now, and it's still as funny as I remember it being back in...MIDDLE SCHOOL. Holy hell, when did I get this old?! And how has CSZ stayed so funny through the years? My most recent experience was for my friend's bachelorette party. Dranks and noms at Independent, followed by laffs at CSZ. This was the most chill and fun bachelorette I've ever been to, hands down. My suggestion of "Shazam" for the Blue Team's Musical yielded a Billy Mays-theme, complete with a Thinking Tree that reduced me to tears. Seriously, you had to be there. I totally need to sign up for their birthday club. I want me some free CSZ for my birthday! (Which is in September, in case any of you want to come with me to a show...) read more

Improv theater, sure why not sounds like it will be a great time. It was a blast. The two teams that were on stage put on a great show. This was the first time that i ventured off to check out improv theater in this style and it was hilarious. The teams did a great job and the topics that were thrown out made for a very laughable evening with some friends. It's a nice decent size space, located upstairs in Calhoun square. Tickets seem to be reasonable for this type of entertainment (plus you get a discount if you are a student). They also do sell beer but you need to have cash to purchase that inside of the venue, the entrance ticket can be paid with a credit card so don't know why there is a difference in payments, oh well. It was a fun evening and would recommend dropping by for a show if you have yet to see it. read more

I can't believe I haven't heard of this place before! We went for a Bachelorette party and I was laughing my ass off! Tickets are super affordable, parking is easy, and it's located in the heart of Uptown. Basically, it's an improv show with skits and games similar to the show Whose Line is it Anyway. My only complaint is the seating. Space is very limited and if you aren't some of the 1st in line, it may be difficult to see. I'm very short and ended up having to sit behind a 6' something guy, so I had to strain my head from time to time. A perfect night out activity! They offer a family show and an adult show as well so you never have to wonder whether the show if going to be appropriate for a 10 year old, or not vulgar enough for your 21st birthday. One 10 year-old gave it a 10 out of 10 rating, one gave it a 6 out of 10 rating. They worked hard to keep it clean for the kids at this very specifically family friendly show. They take suggestions from the audience and asked for no political to try to keep it light and fun. Some references were above their heads and on the edge i.e. Lindsay Lohan. But some were pretty funny, not bust a stomach funny, but funny, "No, no, we don't need a menu I'll have three bananas and my date will have a bag of farts." They also change the format of the improv so that sometimes they're working in a "foursquare" which changes quickly, one of my favorites being one of the guys goes in a soundproof room and the audience picks these scenarios to act out. The team helping him cannot use real words, just nonsense words and actions. One was napping on a bed of snails and doing something else I couldn't remember. It was amazing how close they can get! If you order tickets over the phone there's no service charge. If you order them online there's around a two dollar service charge. The place was packed so I would suggest ordering in advance, although it was a Saturday night. They perform Thursday night Friday night and Saturday night. The later shows are in NC-17 rated and naughtier. read more

First timer and I love it!! They are very talented. I was thinking they must be very smart because it was non script comedy and audiences involved too so they had to be quick to response and have to be funny! They call themselves acteletes, how they came on that name. First we found a bit difficulty to find the place. Nowhere we could see their name on the Calhoun Square' directory. I was glad we were not given up looking. The downside was the chairs. Uncomfortable, flat, small and so close to each others. We sat on the second row, I saw on the back rows the chairs have better cushioned. Better know next time to do a reservation! otherwise we will be on the rush line again. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! OMG, I love this place! Whenever we have a new out of towner visiting us, my fiance and I will try to squeeze in ComeySportz. The "normal" shows are good, clean entertainment. The "themed" shows, or at least the one I went to, are not "clean," but are awesome! Both are funny as all get out and the audience participation makes it so much more engaging for the audience. For those who haven't been there: it's impromptu comedy with two teams (each made up of three people), a referee, and audience participation. The show is made up of rounds that the audience gets to pick. One group goes up against the other and the teams get scores that add up to a winner at the end. The referee will ask for suggestions from the audience throughout and if you say anything "dirty," you get a bag over your head for the rest of that skit (audience and players alike). This company is actually a national company and I believe how it works is that the team with the most points from each location (Mpls, Chicago, Houston, etc) will compete against each other at the end of the "season" for a national winner. read more

I just love coming here. The actletes are so talented and it never ceases to amaze me that some of them have been pulling material out of thin air for years and they still are funny! :) I was a part of a bachelorette party this past weekend and laughed so hard I started crying at one point. And this wasn't even the best crew I have seen! My group of girls was a little obnoxious unfortunetely and only yelled out things relating to weddings and brides the whole time. I find that it is an exercise in quick thinking when the ref asks for things and the first thing that pops into the head of the guy behind you is a hula hooping badger - I mean, I look at the people around me and wonder what they have been sniffing before they come in for the show. Who comes up with that stuff!? Nonetheless, the hilarity is contagious. If you haven't ever been to a show, it is well worth the $10 per ticket. If you are a student, it is even cheaper. But it is much more entertaining than going to ANOTHER movie and is really decent humor. Come with your arsenal of weird ideas filled and be prepared to get involved. It is a much better show when you just get into it and play right along with the actletes. read more

This place is fantastic! We went to the early show and laughed our heads off. The games were pretty standard for an improv troupe - but with a few unique twists that helped keep the evening exciting and fun. The talent was amazing, definitely the best I've seen in the twin cities. They also were well versed, taking on improvised songs as expertly as they implemented random selections from the audience. It can be very difficult finding good quality entertainment that keeps a clean show which was very important. I was so incredibly happy with the performance we got and the feedback from our guests was phenomenal. I went to Comedy Sportz on Saturday with some friends and I had a great time! I love improv and Comedy Sportz did an awesome job! The show is family friendly - Comedy Sportz's go by the motto of not saying/doing anything you wouldn't say in front of your grandma, or you wouldn't want to hear your grandma say! I guess you can somewhat compare the appropriateness to that of a Shrek movie - no matter how old you are everyone will enjoy the movie and the adults appreciate the sense of humor/the writes because there are little things thrown in the move- that only adults would understand and laugh at! I have been there 3 times and I always leave smiling! The show is interactive, allowing the crowd to shout out suggestions for various improv scenarios and judge/vote for their favorite team's performance! Comedy Sportz is an excellent alternative to a movie and other family entertainment options available in the Twin Cities. This is definitely a great place for large groups, special occasions etc.! I personally appreciate quick -witted, obscure and inappropriate humor; thus one day I plan to go back and attend one of their 18+ shows. The actors were pretty funny. Out of the six actors, one of the actresses wasn't very funny and or as quick-witted as the others. From someone who has taken improv classes before, I felt bad for the other actors who had to make lemons out of lemonades with what the not so great actor was giving them to work with - somehow reminding me of the all too common scenario were you are having a really great conversation with a group of people and out of nowhere the one person in the group that hasn't said anything all night - pipes in with a really obscure or an irrelevant comment and then BAM - the great conversation goes dead; followed by looks of confusion . One Downside is that parking anywhere near Calhoun Square / Uptown stinks. Be prepared to pay for a ramp or if you are lucky - a meter. The parking situation is pretty typical for the area. Tickets are $12.00, however if you pre-order on-line your total comes to $13.75. I personally suggest ordering on-line because it's fast, easy and you get better seats if you show up when the doors open! Plus there was a decent sized crowd waiting outside the doors before the theater opened. I highly suggest checking out Comedy Sportz - it's definitely worth the $12.00. read more

I went to Comedysportz to see "High School Diaries" for a double date night. Although I was initially nervous because this show is technically a part of a series, it was very easy to follow. My favorite part was the crowd interactivity. Upon entering, audience members got to write down buzz words/phrases that the improv actors would draw from. Once they were drawn, the actor had to immediately incorporate it into what they were saying. Our group had three of our phrases drawn which was obviously hilarious for us, but the crowd loved it as well. It added even more randomness to the show. Overall, I would highly recommend this as a fun date night or just an outing with friends. read more

First improv show I've been to. I took my boyfriend to the NC-17 show on a Saturday and they definitely made us laugh. The place wasn't very full for a Saturday night but they file you in so everyone is at the front so you don't feel like the audience is small even when it kind of is. The show also had a short intermission to grab snacks or beer which a lot of people took advantage of. I would definitely go back again. They were all very great people and they get their audience involved which really makes it a great experience. read more

I was chosen to be a judge for one of their games, and probably looked like the moron whose vote was opposite of the other two judges, but whatever...not the point. I went to the 8pm showing at the Comedy Sportz Club...which is a littl more PG-13 then the later shows. It was still really funny and the entire cast was really on the ball. I would definitely recommend it to people looking for something different to do! It was a lot of fun! read more
