Ordered takeout and the worker taking our order on the phone was very nice. We ordered a large cheese pizza, a meatball sub, and stuffed shells. It can be tricky parking around here depending on the time of day you go. We went around dinnertime and luckily there was a meter out front but sometimes the traffic is so congested that you don't have time to parallel park and have to keep looking elsewhere at random side streets or things like that. The inside is small but that makes it a cute intimate pizza parlor vibe. When we picked up the food no one was eating inside but it would be nice to eat there and people watch/there's so much to look at in West Newton through their floor to ceiling windows. Comella's is a great casual Italian food spot. I love the meatball sub especially. It is chefs kiss. Sammy's Mess is also amazing. They used to have fettuccine alfredo which was great but it wasn't on the menu when I went recently. Although the seating is small and fits about 6-8 people tops, the ambiance is inviting and relaxing. The cashiers are always friendly and they deliver the food to your table after you order at the register. It's a great place to grab a bite before seeing a movie at West Newton Cinema next door! read more

My wife went in and ordered two of their sandwiches on Friday to take home for dinner. My wife ordered a Meatball sub and I had a Chicken Pesto sub. The meatball sub came on a lovely seeded braided sub roll and mine came on a crappy cut bread stick type roll(Awful tasting and way too spongy!) Not only that but my wife's sub was noticeable bigger that mine in both width and length and chuck full of meatballs. My sub had a meager portion of chicken, not enough pesto and too much mozzarella. The chicken cutlet filled up about four-fifths of the roll. The girls that were working that night seemed annoyed that my wife showed up when she placed her order. As far as the furnishings goes it was fine; they just recently moved into the space but the place was empty when she was there!! They definitely need to step up their sandwich/sub game! Went in for a lunch pasta dish of penne alla vodka. The food was amazing and the service was so quick, they had it out in ten minutes! It was plated nicely with parm on the top, though unfortunately no picture. My friend and I split a regular portion, which was portioned perfectly for a lunch meal for a smaller person. Prices have become way too high. We won't be back. The signature dishes are the "mess" in "buckets", a hodgepodge of what appears to be leftovers dumped together. Our favorite is Aunt Izzy's with veggies and meat. Not attractive for guests, but the appeal was Italian taste and lots of food to feed our family and the kids' friends. Good spot for a local pizza shop. Came here with a few friends. They have a really good offer which is their 8$ large 16' cheese pizza. It was solid pizza for the price. Small space and only a few tables for sit down. Service was good and pizza came out quick. It's located on a busy street and there's only meter parking. Worst, worst, worst experience of all time. Paid almost $100.00 for pizza and salads that were never delivered. This restaurant is run by very incompetent staff and I would really think twice about ordering anything from them. Called very early in the day to put in large pizza order for later that evening. Person on the phone said it was their first time processing orders and were not familiar with the system. Called back later that afternoon to confirm order with another more experienced person, was told order was all set. Pizza was never delivered. Called and spoke to manager, she said she would deliver it herself. Two hours later no pizza was ever delivered. No refund given. Not a professional way to run a business. Up until tonight, I knew the name Greg Comella as a football player for the New York Giants. He played with them for four years (including their 2000 Super Bowl loss to the Ravens) during his seven year NFL career. His career stats include 17 carries, 95 receptions, and one touchdown. But after tonight, I'll also associate his name with some super tasty Italian food and his string of twelve restaurants around Boston. We enjoyed a great take-out meal tonight. Huge trays of chicken parm, lasagna, ziti, Caprese salad, and dessert in the form of mini chocolate chip cannolis. I have nothing but kind words to say about all of the choices. The chicken cutlets were moist and tender, the lasagna was cheesy and delicate, the pasta was perfectly cooked, the garlic bread was fresh and excellent, and the red sauce was very flavorful and delicious. The Caprese salad was a real winner- crisp and fresh Romaine, beefy tomatoes, and thick slabs of very good mozzarella. And let's not forget dessert, the cannolis were sweet and fresh and were a perfect way to finish off this gargantuan meal. The entrees and salad was served in the "half bucket" size. This place is on the same block as the West Newton movie theater, and across the street from Lumiere. Order at the counter, situation yourself at one of a number of small tables (perhaps 8 or so? each set with a pair of chairs), and your food will be delivered rather soon on plates along with double napkin wrapped silverware, and non-too-hot. I had heard that their shrimp was pretty fresh and their meatballs tasty, so I ordered the Bear's mess ($11.99 according to the menu online) with its shrimp and eggplant with a $1.50 for a meatball not quite the size of a tennis ball while my friend the lasagna lover selected the lasagna (surprise!) which came on pasta $6.99 - we got it with ziti. The Eggplant part of Bear's arrived as a nice thick slab of thin breaded eggplant, while the shrimp was a scattering of maybe 5 good sized shrimp. As for the mess itself, I was told that they make a new version every 2 hours. Ours arrived with a tasty sweet tomato meat sauce on ziti with no visible vegetables. I preferred this sauce over the simple meatless tomato sauce that arrived with the lasanga ziti plate. Two dessert options were available the night of our visit - cannoli or tiramisu. Wish I could have tried them, but didn't have the room for either as the two of us had polished off both entrees. The delivery is fast. We've ordered a few times now. I appreciate that it's fast. However. The food is really uneven. There was freezer burn on the calamari. The tiramisu was inedible. Why was the extra cheese in a container instead of in the food? Some of the dishes are pretty good - I like the mess - but I don't appreciate how inconsistent it is. Awesome little place! This is our go-to take-out Italian spot! The portions are generous and prices very reasonable! I always get the veal parm with fusilli...$11.99! Great price and it's delicious!!! My parents recently had Comella's with us and were impressed! They are pretty picky when it comes to Italian and they were very satisfied with their chicken parm and eggplant parm. We've also had the cannolis, which they fill to order for freshness...yes! Comella's is generally great for everything. The pizza is so frustrating. You can't order online as you need to talk to a human and tell them to please COOK THE PIZZA. So many times we have gotten a doughy crap of a pizza. And if you say "well done" it's likely to be burnt. Consistency of pizza is Comella's Achilles heel. It could be the best pizza around. Instead it's a total crap shot. Every damn time. The classic case of picking up a slice and all of the cheese sauce and toppings fall off because it isn't crisp or cooked in any way. Also, the once $5 pizza is now $20 delivered. If you want the most consistent amazing pizza in Boston, it's Pino's. Forget Comella's for pizza unless you like coin flips. read more

I've been to comellas in different places in Massachusetts but I have to say I walked into the West Newton location and was very disappointed. The guy working orders, he asked me right when I walked I'm what would you like, told him just give me a moment then I kid you not he asked me 2 more times under a minute. When I asked him the Size of the lasagna he was so rude, he said ots small about 4 inch by 4 inch. They r far from the same old place I once ate at. Their prices along with many other restaurants smaller portions double the price. I learned a valuable lesson stick to your regular places you like to eat at. read more

Worst experience ever!!! Ordered food from here last night, came out to $96....for that price they could have given me a box to help carry the food and the girls at the counter could have been nicer, they were clearly high school girls with attitudes. Found HUGE HAIR in my calamari (which wasn't even the worst part of it). The worst part being the calamari has zero flavor, was TERRIBLY overcooked and literally i had to gnaw on it to even eat it. Ive had easier times digesting rubber bands. The wings we ordered were boneless honey BBQ wings.....from my picture you can see just how much sauce they give u, literally not even a coating...and the dipping sauce was broken and fishy. I stopped in here after many Yelper recommendations. When I got here I was a bit shocked by how small the dining area was and how BIG the menu was. I brought a bottle of wine (BYOB) with me but I instead took our order to go as our home would be much more comfortable and nice than the small and plain dining room. My first time going here was last Wednesday. Where to start.... the pasta here is fresh and great! The portion are decently big. The sauce is semi blend I had spinach ravioli with red sauce and it could have used some fresh pepper and garlic but maybe it was just me. The prices are very fair. I'm giving them 4 stars and am only taking off one because there inside is set up like a small pizza shop. I wish there were more resturant, dinning roomy in feel that way I could sit there and enjoy a meal in peace without patrons walking in and hitting me chair left and right. Being from CT, I was not familiar with Comella's and found it through Yelp. Comella's is a cool concept for quick Italian. This is cozy cafe style place with a chalkboard menu. The menu has all of the traditional Italian dishes from entrees to sandwiches to salads. We had the chicken parm sandwich, pesto chicken sandwich, and a side of pasta with marinara. All items were satisfying and presented as you would expect them to be. They also serve beer and wine. If I was in the area, I would probably check them out again. read more

We ordered a pizza and when the guy brought it out it wasn't cut then it was uncooked and partially frozen and it would not cut like it was made of cardboard?? Really terrible. Not due to the food, due to the fact that my orders are plain wrong the vast majority of the time. My usual order is for their sausage with no toppings, hard roll. What I get about 80% of the time, that is no exaggeration, is drowning in cheese and marina. Even when we could eat there I would get it like that. One time it wasn't until the third time they got it right. Of the great many mistakes here the last straw was my last order. 3 sandwiches, 3 done completely wrong. As usual mine had its mandatory cheese and drowning in marinara sauce. The cutlet sandwich was minus any onions, again, asked for. The meatball sub had plastic in it. By the time I made it to Comella's I was starving!! Luckily my friend and I were able to snag one of the few seats available there and put our stuff down before we ordered. Not having any idea what a "mess" was, the cashier was happy to explain it to us. I ordered a mess with sausage. Finally our food came out and my friend and I dove in. Unfortunately, there was no sausage to be found! The line was too long and I was too hungry to bring it back and wait for a whole new one to come out. My friend ordered the meatball mess, it seemed like instead of taking the time to make the two separate orders they just doubled up on the first instead. More then Pleased! Quick catering for dinner parties! Christmas Eve I had last minute family over for an 8 person dinner party. Spinellis was no longer taking orders and in a desperate search for good Italian I came across Comellas, a Christmas miracle! Ordered a full pan of chicken broccoli ziti and sausage eggplant mess 1 hour before guests arrived Christmas Eve and although I was skeptical of my last minute decision the food was delivered piping hot and on time-delicious, AMAZING! Did not even miss spinellis! Thank you Comellas! Ps I'm Italian American and can appreciate your efficient, well priced, large portion, home cooked food instead of criticizing the size of your store front or color of water glasses (huge eye roll). We have been a customer for long time. Lately over the last six months the quality has been poor and we haven't been as frequent with this location. We have experienced overcooked and burnt chicken in our pasta, turkey sandwiches with barely any turkey in them and at almost $9 dollars you would expect some actual turkey in the sandwich. Orders of meatball sandwiches ordered without cheese arriving loaded with both ricotta and american cheese in them. Very disappointing so we have limited our purchasing for now. read more

Nice little place for calzones, pizza and the dish I ordered called a "mess" if I remember correctly. The mess is a bowl of pasta, very nice red sauce, mozzarella cheese and other ingredients depending which you order. The one I ordered had breaded chicken breast and meatballs. I was pleased with all the ingredients and I thought the price was fair. Pretty good sized serving too. It's a pretty small place, probably 6 tables. So carry out might be the way to go. The lasagna was AMAZING, and I don't even like lasagna! I liked that they serve it with pasta (we chose ziti) so that it's not just a cheese overload. And the tomato sauce was so fresh and delicious. The sweet potato raviolis just melted in my mouth, and the plate of them was huge! Even better that you can pick your sauce for them (we went with the garlic and oil). Speaking of garlic, make sure you get an order of the garlic bread with your meal - yum! The portions are huge, we split two dishes between the three of us and still had leftovers (and one person was eating for two!). Whoa - how the heck have I not reviewed Comella's yet? Guess the time has come. I - LOVE - THIS - PLACE . I have had take-out here many times, and sampled many different items (generally though, its a Mess of some sort). I've never been disappointed in the food, the service, or the portions. The worst part of the experience is just choosing one thing over another. The latest score (last night, and its still on my mind) was 2 entrees - fresh beef raviolis and the eggplant parm w/ stuffed shells. From experience, I know that just one "single" is enough for 2 people, but its so hard to limit yourself to just one choice. Lets start with the rav's... Umm.. wow. That was the first time I'd had the ravioli, and I will be back. I WILL sample the squash, eggplant, asparagus, and lobster ones before long. There are probably a dozen different kinds, btw. The eggplant is a stacked brick of a masterpiece - layered with pasta, cheese, and breaded eggplant heaven. It was unlike any eggplant dish I've ever concocted or ordered - I could almost (ok, not really) go vegetarian for that dish, if I really had to. The stuffed shells were chock full o ricotta - definitely hard to not try and fit the whole damn shell in your face. And there was a nice layer of ziti in the dish too, just for kicks. Fantastic. Comella's t-o-m-a-t-o sauce most definitely does not compare to any jarred sauce I've tasted, by the way. The chicken parm, sausages, and meatballs are all top notch as well. Ordering is usually about a 10-15 minute wait, so you could call ahead. They have a nice HD TV in place now though if you choose to wait - and, as I observed last night, you could always get a glass of wine while you wait (that guy was a genius)! If money is tight, a "single" sized entree, with a salad, could easily feed two people for $15 - $20 and it'll be way better than most Italian restaurant meals. Parking is always a pain on Washington Street, but you can just turn up Highland Ave and park behind the bank. read more
