People rave about this place being better than the north end; I would say it's definitely more original, and the approach to food is much more intentional. However, I don't know that it lived up to the hype that I anticipated. We got the pizza Bianca with ricotta with hot honey, which was basically just like plain toasted focaccia and ricotta (wasn't anything to write home about). The taleggio was 100% our least favorite and we didn't even finish half. We had asked the waiter to describe taste profile, which they said was a "little funky" and had asked for clarification if it was closer to blue cheese. Once it arrived, it was like a verrrrrry strong/stinky Brie on the inside. The balsamic didn't really contribute to the taste at all. Sad that we didn't like this/kinda made me feel yucky after eating. The cavatelli was very good- nice light creamy sauce with the sausage and bitter broccolini. Very well balanced. Tonino is such a gem in JP -- everything about the experience just hits. The pizza was delicious, and definitely don't skip the dips -- even with a red pie. They take the crust to another level and make sure nothing goes to waste. I also had the clams and bucatini with anchovy chili butter, and it was absolutely to die for -- rich, flavorful, and one of those dishes you keep thinking about after the meal ends. My husband and I recently visited Tonino for my birthday and enjoyed it so much. This tiny little spot seems beloved by the locals in JP, so much so that we couldn't snag a reservation while we were in town. However, they do have a limited takeout menu that is stacked with some of the tastiest pizza around. These tall, airy focaccia pies are dreamy carb-lovers' delights. I was sure I'd love the hot honey and pepperoni combination the best, or the eggplant and ricotta one, but it was the simplicity of the margherita (and the richness of the cheese) that took the top honors. We ordered and enjoyed all three, along with the excellent Trevisano salad (chicory, parsley, pickled cipollini onions, pecorino romano, garlic butter breadcrumbs, red wine vinaigrette). We also got the pizza bianca, which is just their house bread with dips, and here is where I have a bone to pick with Tonino. In a city full of stellar Italian food, it easily holds its own To get a res here, you're going to have to log on at noon 30 days in advance when they open up. That's what my husband and I did but unfortunately we weren't logged in when we were booking. In the 2 minutes it took us to navigate to the login and back, the only reservation left was at 9:45pm, so that's what we got! Even at a later time, the place was 100% full when we arrived. I felt like I had to BATTLE for a reservation for two on a Friday night--went to Resy 30 days in advance, tried for 6:30, somebody had taken that slot, so grabbed the 8:30pm time. I think we tried almost everything on the menu and I honestly can't say what I liked best; it was all that good. Tonino is a local Italian joint that requires reservations 2 months in advance to enjoy its very carefully crafted menu. Overall I really enjoyed the food, experience, and we really wanted to try everything simply because it was hard to get a reservation. First, their reservations go quickly because the dining area is small, and their hours are limited. I'd recommend camping out the resy to get the date you want. Second, their menu is mainly pizza bianca, appetizers, pizzas, and pastas. It's a relatively small menu but you can tell everything is handcrafted and made fresh. Their pizza is thick, imagine more like a focaccia thickness, and cut into the square Detroit style. You think the pizza is small, but because of its thickness, it's actually quite filling. We tried the pepperoni with hot honey pizza and eggplant pizza and I have to say that the eggplant was the winner for me, although my friends enjoyed the other one. I think the eggplant did a good job soaking into the bread. For appetizers, we tried the kale salad and while it was refreshing, I wasn't especially in love with it. We tried almost all of the pastas. All of the pastas were cooked to the perfect al dente. My and my friend's collective favorite is the Lumache with mushroom and I would highly recommend trying that one. The taleggio is a burst of cheese which is not my style, the cavatelli with sausage was a little salty for me, and the bucatini was a bit plain. The rigatoni was good but there were a few burnt pieces of pancetta. Lastly, we tried the tiramisu and panna cotta. The tiramisu was pretty decent, but not the best I've ever had. There was an especially salty layer, and the lady fingers were rather cake-y. The panna cotta came with apple pieces which I think was just an okay combo, but the dessert itself was good. Overall, I had a great time at this place, the waiter was very friendly and personable, and I had fun trying the menu. My friend and I added our names to the waitlist and were called about two hours later. The staff were so accommodating and helped us with our celebration. The inside is very small but they fit as many people as they can. I started with the house spritz which was perfect. For an appetizer we split the pizza Bianca, clams and house olives. The clams were amazing and the pizza Bianca was the best side to soak up the sauce. The olives weren't my favorite because of the licorice taste. The dishes here are seemingly simple, but are executed well with high-quality ingredients. My personal favorite was the ricotta and hot honey. It's a classic - it was so light and had the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and creaminess. The clams are also another standout dish; it was perfectly cooked, and the broth was so flavorful that it could have been served by itself. The taleggio cappelleti is what I was most excited to try. It did not disappoint - the pasta still had a slight chew. Immediately after biting into it, it had such an intense cheesy richness that was followed by a slightly sweet tang from the aged balsamic. Of course, we had to finish the meal by trying all three of their desserts: panna cotta, cheesecake and tiramisu. The tiramisu was one of my favorites. Finally was able to snag reservation that worked after a few weeks of trying to corral people together. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself was great. I thought it was a little too dark but overall had a great ambiance and cute, subdued aesthetic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The music and general noise was also at a comfortable level, a nice touch which many restaurants get wrong.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was also great. Very attentive and helpful for guiding us through the popular items, specials, and personal favorites. As a hungry group of three first-timers, we ordered 4 pastas, 2 desserts, a pizza bianca and sauce, and a slice of pizza. This amount ended up being right for leaving satiated without overly stuffed. The pizza pianca, like breadsticks, and pizza slice, like a "granny slice," was surprising light and really enjoyable. If you like crispy new york style this pizza won't scratch the itch but for lovers of flatbreads this is exceptional. The stracciatella dip was so good (the tomato relish was incredible!) as was the hot honey and pepperoni topping combination. We skipped the starters and went straight for the pastas. We split the taleggio cappelletti and each ordered our own: a seasonal butternut squash filled pasta, bucatini with anchovy chili butter, and rigatoni amatriciana. The pasta itself was outstanding. I love pasta with a bit of bite and this delivered. I thought the dishes could have all been a bit more flavourful. The popular cappelletti are little pockets of molten taleggio, a slightly funky cow's milk cheese and one of the favorites. I also really liked the rigatoni amatriciana. It was a much more tomato-ey sauce than I am used to for amatriciana and I really enjoyed it. The butternut squash raviolis were well done and bursting with sweetness. And the bucatini had all the umami from the anchovies and roe without being too fishy. Everything was good but they all lacked anything extra to be particularly special. I thought each dish could have used one more strong flavour to make the dish a bit more interesting. I had extremely high expectations due to the hype and hassle to make a reservation so that could have led to me being a bit underwhelmed. We finished off the meal with the tiramisu and panna cotta. Both were delicious, my favorite was the panna cotta. Overall, extremely good pasta and pizza and would love to return but for me, not sure I think its worth the hassle of planning a multiple weeks in advance. read more

I was lucky enough to snag a last minute reservation here. I started with the anchovies which came on squares of their pizza dough on top of a slab of butter. This was an unexpectedly great pairing! It was balanced but I will try a different appetizer before I came back to this. For my entree, I had the mushroom pasta. It was perfectly cooked and delicious. I would order again. Lastly, I had the tiramisu. It was a large portion so I took some home. Best tiramisu I've had since Italy! 100% recommend! read more

The pepperoni pizza slice with hot honey: nothing special. The bread was crispy and delicious, but the toppings were underwhelming. The sauce was perfectly tangy, but there wasn't enough of it, or the cheese. I also wish the pizza had come out more hot. Servers are very attentive here. I did notice that a lot of people with reservations were being asked to wait for a while to be seated. The small space is definitely the issue. Mushroom pasta - the mushrooms were meaty, pasta perfectly cooked, parsley was fresh and aromatic, and contrary to popular opinion, the portion size perfect (not sure if it was just this dish). However, it was a little saltier than I liked. I will say, it's nothing to write home about. Cocktail - I got the Bergamot Blush and it was delicious, strong, not too sweet, and very citrus forward. Overall, I think the food here is unnecessarily overpriced. While I would not come back here for the food, I might return for a cocktail in 3 years when I can finally get another reservation. read more

Holy smokes. Unreal how good the food was. The pizza is incredible, it was like a magic trick. Seriously, we tried a ton of stuff and everything was perfect. Best pasta chef(s) in the city. Already one of the hardest reservations to get in all of Boston... this is one of the best restaurants in the city BY FAR. Service is A+.
