These have been the best fried green tomatoes I've had since living in Huntsville for about a year. The pimento cheese is the perfect compliment. The ravioli was fine but nothing too crazy. I was in this industry for MANY years so I tend to overlook a LOT but when you don't see your server, can't find your server, can't get a drink or a water refill and the server seems completely nonplussed it's just indicative of a lack of training and management. Each dish we've enjoyed has been absolutely delicious, especially the Fried Goat Cheese Salad and Wednesday's Special of Bourbon & Cola Braised Brisket, with Potato Hash and Braised Collard Greens. Despite the high recommendations, this restaurant just failed to excite me on many levels. I do not want this to sound like I was just a grumpy old man, but there were too many minor disappointments to generate a very high rating. Jeremy was our server and he did very well. My friend ordered the Porterhouse Pork Chop. I'd never heard of anything like that but he was satisfied. As I was too full from desert, I ordered two appetizers, the Crab Cakes and the Cornmeal Crusted Fried Oysters. Both were nice in that there was a lot of crab meat and hardly any filler and the oysters were done to a tender finish. However, both lacked a major contribution of the seafood. In fact, they were a bit bland and served with too much of an overly strong flavor profile of a remoulade sauce. I had my heart set on the creme brulee, but they could not make it because the did not have the kitchen torch. So I settled for the tres leche cheesecake. That was a pleasant surprise. I expected a cheesecake but what came was a layered pastry with a nice moist cake layered with the cheese mixture. Good job and nice mouth feel. The order for my mixed drink had to go back. I clearly asked for the bourbon to be chilled over ice and then the ice strained out. i got my drink on the rocks. I'm not sure if reviewer etiquette should include oberservations about other tables, but here goes anyway. Two couples with infants had to wait what I considered an extremely long wait for high chairs. They did not seem annoyed but I have seen high chairs come our much faster at budget restaurants. Then there were issues with table stability. Two tables near us were so unsteady patrons had to ask for corrective action and staff attempted to shim them with whatever they could find. I really do not believe this is the first time such an issue was noticed at these tables and certainly should have been corrected a long time ago. In fact, they should have checked every table for stability. So there you have it. read more

I was super excited to try this restaurant but it was underwhelming. I started with the fried brussel sprouts, which were alright; nothing exceptional. For my entree I had the Gulf Shrimp and Falls Mills Grits. The shrimp were rather small but the grits were actually pretty good. The portion seemed small but it was the perfect amount after I was done eating. For dessert I had the crème brûlée and it was strange. All crème brûlées I've ever had have been warm. This one was room temperature. I asked about this at another restaurant and maybe it's a southern (maybe Alabama?) thing. Needless to say, not what I was expecting. It wasn't good. For the life of me I can't remember what I had (it was that non-spectacular), but it was on the brunch menu, had eggs, and I had to dump salt, pepper, and (yes) ketchup on it to consume. It was supposed to be spicy, if that tells you anything. Better half didn't even finish his meal (for the first time maybe ever) because it was cold. My boyfriend said, "probably the best chicken sandwich he's ever had" and I agreed because I couldn't stop eating it myself! I also got the shrimp & grits. So delicious! Not that impressed! It's located in a darling part of the city with all kinds of historic buildings and houses. Everything is really well kept so it's a fun place to walk. I was alone on a business trip and came here on a recommendation. The place was pretty busy and lively which is a good sign. I took a seat at the bar. The bartender was great and service was great. My Moscow mule was superb! This is partly my fault because I know better than to order a steak anywhere except for a steakhouse. I've also ways found that if it's not their specialty, it's just not going to live up to my expectations. But this person has also recommended the steak and said that it compared to Ruth Chris. So maybe the bar was set a bit too high from the start and there was no way they would ever live up to it. It felt like a plated dinner at a wedding. I ordered the filet med well, and I had to send it back because it was too pink. The green beans were blah and all of it was atop a pile of mashed potatoes. I would still give them another chance next time I'm in town. This is aa reminder that I shouldn't stray from my rule of only ordering steaks from steakhouses. Lesson learned! read more

I found Commerce Kitchen while looking for a place to eat dinner before I went to one of the Havoc Hockey Games. I called and asked about the wait time and was told that there was no available seating and everything was booked up due to reservation but if there was seats open at the bar I could be served there. When I got there there was no available seating and I was about to leave, when a man came out and said there was available seating as someone just canceled their reservation (Thank The Lord!) I couldn't tell you how thankful I am for him, as if he didn't come over I wouldn't have got to eat here. I knew that the prices were on the upscale side but that was ok with me as the other restaurants near were also on the pricey side. Everyone was all dressed up, and the establishment was so elegant and warm. Even with everyone being dressed up I did not feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. The staff was very friendly, from the guy that helped me get a table from the server and the waitress. Everyone was so nice and helpful. Finally, talking about what I ordered here we go. I went with the Braised Angus Short Rib Ravioli and the Sweet Potato Mash. The Ravioli was something I had never imagined would be so good! The Ravioli noodles were cooked perfectly, the sauce was so yummy, and the meat was so tender and delicious. The Sweet Potato Mash was very good, your typical Sweet Potato Mash but still pretty good! For dessert, I had intended on getting a Creme Brûlée but they sadly ran out before I could get one. So instead, I went with a Key Lime Pie and a Caramel Pecan Pie (slice for both) but I will say the Key Lime Pie was more of a tart then a slice but I'm not complaining! The Key Lime Pie was so yummy, one of the best I have had. I debated about getting another one to bring home with me (LOL). The Caramel Pecan Pie was served warm and was so gooey. I really enjoyed the Caramel Pecan Pie as well! Your probably wondering if everything was so good and the service was astonishing then why the four stars? Well, I thought all the food was amazing I just wish that the prices were lower. The pricing compared to other restaurants near aren't any worse but I think with the portions the prices could be smaller. Besides this everything was so wonderful and I would like to come back to dress up and try a steak and a Creme Brûlée. Service was very friendly and it doesn't get much better than enjoying your meal outside on a night with perfect weather. The food itself was enjoyable but a bit salter than expected. My shrimp and grits were tasty and I enjoyed the parmesean sauce but it was a bit too salty and others who ordered other items found them a bit too salty as well. I tried the Key Lime Pie (not salty of course) and while not the best I've had, this native Floridian approved and would order it again. I enjoyed my meal here and would come back, especially if I was able to eat outside. Maybe next time things will be a bit less salty. read more

My Mac and cheese was cold and the collard greens were too well salted. The dining room was nicely laid out with both booth and chair seating available. Came here for an impromptu dinner on a weeknight with the family. Was able to get a table for 4 with no wait and service was quick! We ordered the fried green tomatoes, hot chicken bites, pork chop, wedge salad, shrimp and grits, and the nightly special which was a pan seared veal with blue cheese mashed potatoes, two scallops, and asparagus($50). Highly recommend the nightly special if they offer it again, but it was pretty salty and filling so if you're there with someone else I'd split that with a salad to break up the saltiness. My only grievance was that the "house" pinot was $22, which seems like a pretty high price, but that was on me for not checking the menu first. The crème brûlée and the bread pudding were good but nothing to write home about (I'm spoiled with Rougaroux's bread pudding in Birmingham), but overall service was great and food was flavorful! read more

Both pretty good, no complaints. Entrees ordered: two featured entrees - seared sea bass with polenta, shrimp creole sauce and broccolini, shrimp & grits, and filet. Sea bass overcooked and rubbery, parmesan polenta runny consistency and just sad. Shrimp and grits - I've seen better at Connor's and even Another Broken Egg. Filet was requested medium and came out rare with blood on the plate and canned (not fresh) mushroom topper. Desserts - featured peanut butter pie and key lime pie. Menu shows 14 oz prime rib as their special on Friday and Saturday nights. Went there on a Saturday night recently. Both my husband and I ordered the prime rib, mine medium and my husband medium rare. Steak wasn't anywhere near 14 oz. Closer to 10 oz. My steak was tough and my husband's steak was okay. A lot of money for a small amount of meat. Waiter took longer to come back to our table as our dinner progressed. All in all meals were mediocre. Will not return. read more

My wife and I visited Huntsville for a long weekend. We wanted to have a dinner on the fancier side so we made a reservation on Sunday, Oct 2, 2022 at Commerce Kitchen in downtown Huntsville. When we arrived, we were promptly taken to our table and given water. The ambiance was fine. We waited for 20 minutes and were about to leave when a waiter came to our table, apologized for the wait, offered an explanation about how long some other table took, and took our drink orders. We ordered two cocktails. They were served in a timely manner. One was decent. The other was mediocre. This Sunday night they were offering a fixed price "Supper" menu with three courses. The first course was quite good: biscuits with honey butter, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese, and a lightly dressed salad. The second course (the main course) was a protein of your choice with three sides of your choice. My wife ordered the brisket with collards, mac & cheese, and green beans. I ordered the steak with collards, mac & cheese, and grits. This second course was profoundly disappointing. Everything served was cold or tepid in temperature. My wife's mac & cheese was decent, but the green beans were unsalted, bland, tough, and stringy. The brisket was completely inedible. I took one large bite of nothing but grizzle. I got up from the table, went to the bathroom and spit it into the trash can. My steak was cooked nicely and seasoned well, but the grits were pasty, cold, unseasoned, and practically unsalted. Surprisingly, the collards were over salted, over seasoned, and acrid. I made the best of this problem by combining the grits with the collards and they balanced out for something I could find edible. And the mac & cheese I ordered? It didn't come. The waiter consulted their notes and confirmed that my order was delivered incorrectly. They said they'd correct the matter and have an order of mac & cheese to me soon. We continued with our meal. I ordered and received a glass of wine in a timely manner. About 20 minutes later, as we were winding down, the waiter came to our table, apologized for forgetting to get me the mac & cheese I ordered, and asked me if I still wanted it. We got key lime pie for dessert. It was fine. Final bill: $120.99 before tip. We were comped nothing. I do not recommend patronizing Commerce Kitchen. read more

Stick to the down home menu basics at Commerce Kitchen to enjoy a home run dining experience The place was bustling the night we stopped in for dinner, but the staff were on their game making sure service was prompt and courteous -- a relief from an earlier visit a year ago when staff shortages resulted in lackluster service. Not now -- everything is humming like a well-oiled machine at Commerce Kitchen! Water glasses were promptly filled & refilled, drinks were quick to arrive at the table (a bourbon-based Lawbreaker was excellent, a flute of rose champagne was unfortunately a bit flat). For sake of menu exploration, we ordered three appetizers. In baseball parlance, the batting average was two hits and a strikeout. The crispy fried brussel sprouts were a solid base hit while the fried green tomatoes were a serious home run - crispy, crumbly texture with a mouth-watering tender tangy tomato drizzled with a savory sauce . In contrast, the hot fried chicken bites should have stayed on the bench -- neither hot nor spicy and a bit chewy in a disappointing way. Like the drinks and appetizers, the main entrees appeared without delay. My wife and her friend ordered Shrimp & grits while I ordered the special -- shrimp scampi. The scampi sauce leaned more toward a cream sauce than the buttery lemon-garlic broth that I excepted. Terrific sauce flavor but the shrimp tasted like it had been tossed on top without the benefit of marinating in the scampi flavors, and the pasta was overcooked, too soft for customers who prefer their pasta al dente. On the other side of the table, the Shrimp & Grits team was batting 1000: Smoky bacon, generous shavings of parmesan, hearty grits with a finely tuned texture provided a fully satisfying dining experience for the two ladies. Based on the sample bites they shared with me, I would highly recommend visiting Commerce Kitchen simply for this dish alone. We ordered a creme brulee to share for dessert. Again, the flavors were right but the textures were off. The custard at one end of the dish was runny. We will be back for sure, but our menu selection will focus on the foundational southern dishes that this place does so well. read more

If a negative rating were possible, I would give a -5. I went to Commerce Kitchen with a companion for Sunday Brunch. Given the lack of customers in the restaurant should have been my first clue. The second clue should have been the sparsity of staff. We ordered our food and it seemed a long time before my companion's food arrived. I insisted that she go ahead and eat while her food was still warm. ONE HOUR LATER, MY FOOD STILL HAD NOT ARRIVED. No explanation was given other than several times I was told "They are cooking it now." Note: Other customers came in, ordered, and received their food. I NEVER WAS SERVED MY FOOD! Inexplicably and shamefully, the floor manager NEVER came to my table and apologized. NEVER spoke with me. I've been a regular customer for years and have noticed a consistent reduction in the number of customers. Someday Commerce Kitchen will close due to the lack of customers and I will know why. By the way, after one hour, I canceled my order with a vow never to return. read more
