Chicken tender dinner with broccoli, French fries, and a roll
    Bailey B.

I honestly can't believe I've never left a review for Galen's. I guess it's just because it's been a fixture in my family's dining rotation for so long that the thought never occurred to me. Sadly, we actually hadn't been to Galen's in a very long time -- not sure why, probably some combination of pandemic + busy, but I'm happy to say I remedied that situation with my mom yesterday on our weekly lunch together! And it was every bit as good -- perhaps better -- as I remember it being. The interior is kinda cute kitschy southern / fish shack chic. It's a medium size restaurant that provides table service, though you take your ticket to the register to pay. Service is generally efficient and friendly. This time, I thought our waitress was particularly good. I think her name was Kristen, but I'm not sure. This restaurant is no frills, country cooking. It's popular with the locals and usually does good business at least for breakfast and lunch, which is when we tend to visit. They have traditional breakfasts, plate lunches, and barbeque. Never had the bbq but they have a smoker out back that's usually pumping out good smells. I'm always just too drawn in by the plate lunches. They have different specials each day of the week. You can opt for one of your sides to be replaced with the dessert of the day, which is always nice. My family and I have tried a lot of the food here and I honestly don't think we've had a bad meal. Our go-to's are the vegetable plate, chicken and dressing when they have it, and the chicken tender dinner. Chicken and dumplings are good too. For sides, we like their broccoli (lots of butter and garlic), their vegetable medley (which sounds like it wouldn't be that exciting but is actually exceptional), coleslaw (you've got your choice of mayo or vinegar-based -- my mom LOVES their mayo based with poppyseeds like her mom used to make :D), and what gets my vote for best fried okra in town. Don't forget to ask for ranch for dipping if you get chicken tenders or fries; it's homemade and super creamy. Their dessert of the day is usually some kind of cobbler. I like the chocolate cobbler: warm chocolate pudding and pie crust. Yum. At breakfast, the eggs, bacon, biscuits, hash browns, and pancakes are all consistently made well. A one-off visit here may only earn 4 stars, but after many, many visits over the years, the consistently solid food and quick service has solidified this as one of our regular favorites. Give them a try if you're in the area.

Don't let the building scare you. The food here is DELICIOUS!!!! I ordered the pork chops but they were out so they offered the ribs just pulled from the smoker and O.M.G. They were really good.

Just one of those great, small places you usually pass when you drive by - and shouldn't. Amazingly friendly staff, good food that was very reasonable. Everyone we came with raved about their pancakes, and I had the biscuits and gravy. It was very good also. It helped that we were all a bit hungover - and everything had just the right amount of grease :)

Service was quick and cheerful from all the staff. I had the fried catfish, baby lima beans, fried okra, and hush puppies. Spouse had shrimp basket, hush puppies, and homemade potato chips. As you can see, multiple fried foods. Fried okra is how I test "country" cooking. This was the best fried okra I have had in years. The catfish, shrimp and hush puppies were all excellent. It seems like they use a very light oil, but however, they do it the results are crunchy, non-greasy and bring out the flavor of the food. The way frying is meant to do. Very light breading but just enough. The baby lima beans were excellent. So many times I've had side orders that tasted just like they were scooped out of a 5 gallon can of Sysco product. I could be wrong, maybe it was the very very mild seasoning, but these did not seem commercial. A few caveats. There was a single catfish fillet and it was quite small. I recall getting the catfish fillet meal at the old Gibson's on the Parkway before it burned down. Two large fillets. But actually they could not compare to this. Hush puppies were excellent, I like more onions in them. But that's my preference. But for me, this does not takeoff from the overall five star rating, which I rarely give on a first visit. If you like country food, by all means go here. We will be back.

But the real winner was the basket of perfectly cooked (blubber-free) wings with zesty flavor! I have driven by this tidy little bar & burger joint at least a hundred times in the past few years but until two Saturdays ago, the opportunity to check out Perfect Timing just didn't fit perfectly into my schedule. But on that day, I needed to deliver some stuff to my son when both of us were pressed for time and fairly hungry. Perfect Timing is located roughly halfway between our houses, so it turns out that Perfect Timing was the perfect place too. We were the second customers in the place at 11:30 am. Waitress was super friendly & helped us sort through the innovative combos on the burger menu. We took our seats at a hightop table and sipped our draft beers -- at a perfect price ($5 for a Miller Lite) -- and watched the cook in the back as he prepped our custom-made burgers. No frozen prefab factory burgers here, folks, just honest-to-goodness primo ground beef and fresh ingredients. We also ordered a basket of wings with varying toppings. The wings came out to the table first and we thoroughly enjoyed them. FINALLY, a restaurant that gets it right with wings: crispy on the breading and tender on the inside, sizzling with flavor! The wings were fantastic! About that time, we could hear rumbling in the parking lot. Not your typical thunderstorm as I had first assumed, but a couple dozen assorted Harleys and road trikes rolling in for a charity ride to help a neighbor struggling with health issues. In the space of about 15 minutes, some thirty adults and kids (this was mostly a family biker group) breezed through the place, displaying a level of polite respect and good manners that would make Emily Post proud. After everyone had finished snacks, drinks and restroom, they hopped on their bikes and headed out. Talk about perfect timing again! We finished our lunch and agreed that when it comes to enjoying a terrific burger in a simple setting, Perfect Timing is the perfect place.

We called before driving downtown to ensure they were open and ask about seating and were told we could sit at the bar or sit outside. Upon arrival, we were fortunate enough to get a spacious 4-top inside! This was a really nice surprise! It's small inside and mostly 2-tops. I think the small bar may seat 6 people. The entire staff were friendly, helpful and full of smiles! They were doing a good business at ~ 1:30 when we arrived. They were packed. We shared a charcuterie board with an order of Southern deviled eggs. The eggs were as flavorful as I recalled them being last time I was here, but I thought they would really benefit from candied bacon vice the regular bacon they used. The candied bacon would offset the creaminess. On the charcuterie board we had smoked duck breast [a first for me, I had never tried duck before] with smoked onion jam, Spanish fig jam, and gouda cheese with an add on of sourdough bread slices. The board came with grapes and crostini. Their menu says it comes with toasted almonds, but ours did not. I'm estimating the charcuterie board was $30.00. They offer sandwiches, meals for 2, spaghetti and meatballs, salmon bowls, soups, and salads, and a variety of shareables. I enjoyed the duck. It had a nice smoky flavor and was reminiscent of smoked ham. It was not gamey, rich, or fatty. It was really good. The cheese was nice, too. We didn't get much jam. I think they forgot the fig jam. Best friend wanted a soup and I think the issue was, BF only wanted a cup of soup and maybe they were offering bowls only - don't quote me, it just didn't work out for BF to get the soup. We each had a glass of their house white, if I recall correctly, it was a Chardonnay and a good value at $6.00 for a nice pour! Upon checkout, I asked about their white wines for sale, and they are located straight back near the hallway that leads to a restroom. The same house white by the bottle is 9.99 which made me wonder how much their corkage fee was because clearly the bottle is a better value. The staff kept our waters topped off and the restroom was clean [note: it is unisex, with no changing table]. We didn't need the sourdough bread add on, and took it to go and my husband woofed it down. He's a bread "snob" and it must have been good, because it was gone in a few minutes after I got home. We really enjoyed our time at Let Petit Bijou! Although packed with patrons, the noise level was not bad at all and we were able to enjoy our conversation, our meals and wine. I look forward to returning!

That's the only explanation I can think of, as this restaurant is popular. This is the page of Petit Bijou. Petit Bijou is owned and operated by the same folks who own Domaine South. Indeed, the building/room that houses Petit Bijou once HOUSED Domaine South. But the actual Domaine South outgrew this spot and moved to the old Keegan's location around the corner and just down the stairs nearer to the park. Now, Petit Bijou occupies this spot on the square. It's similar to Domaine South with a focus on fresh, delicious, upscale food (particularly charcuterie), but with a slightly scaled-back menu, a stronger focus on sandwiches, and a wine bar vibe. I never got the chance to visit Domaine South in its original iteration here. I've heard lovely things about both DS and PB -- honestly, just in terms of sheer positive press, I'd say DS is probably the best-reviewed more upscale dining spot in Huntsville. My actual rating is probably a 4.5, but I'm going to round up to a 5 because the vibes were fantastic and the service was phenomenal. I went here with my parents for our weekly lunch together on Thursday. They have a lovely small patio but it was stiflingly hot, and we were thankful to find a spot for the three of us indoors. We were late for lunch but even then there was a decent number of folks dining inside and out. Even though the door to the patio was left open throughout our visit, the AC was working powerfully enough that we weren't ever too hot sitting in the restaurant. You order at the bar here, but the gentleman manning the bar rushed out and got us some fresh iced water as soon as we sat down. He was exceedingly personable, charming, and very skilled at gauging when his presence was needed. He answered my questions about their wines, told a good joke, didn't hover but was present when needed, asked if we needed boxes, and regularly came with water refills. Can't ask for much more, especially for counter-ish service. Food and drink are delivered to your table when ready. Menus are accessible in stacks on the bar -- one for daily specials, one for everyday food, and one for wine. My parents very much enjoyed the music (lots of 60s and 70s, heavy on the Al Green the day we visited :D) and the decorations are very cute and wine shop-y with lots of accents that remind you this is a Huntsville original. Having heard about their charcuterie boards and being fairly light eaters, my parents ordered that for lunch. Your choice of cheeses (gouda for us), toasted almonds, crostini, and fresh grapes come standard on a board, but you can add more cheeses, meats, or even appetizers for an extra cost. They asked for the deviled eggs to accompany them. The board was beautiful and came out quickly. I was hungrier, as usual, so I ordered the Albuquerque turkey: turkey, pepperjack, hatch chilies, mayo, conecuh bacon, and avocado (though I asked for this to be removed and it was). Even though it was hot, I couldn't resist adding a cup of their tomato basil soup as my side. As expected, the charcuterie board in particular was outstanding. Every element was delicious -- sweet grapes, crunchy and toasty almonds with no hint of dusty, chalkiness you sometimes get with them, and delicious slightly smoky, slightly tangy Gouda. The deviled eggs were also delicious. The bacon on top was cooked perfectly and was quite a highlight. My mom, who particularly loves this kind of food, said they were some of the best deviled eggs she's ever had, and among the best Gouda. Both parents were happy campers and I enjoyed getting a taste of everything they ordered. My soup and sandwich combo was also excellent, though didn't quite reach the heights of the board. The bacon was cooked PERFECTLY, and the toasted sourdough was delightfully crispy on the edges and chewy in the center. Seriously awesome bread. I enjoyed the tang of the chilies, though for me I was expecting the heat factor to be up just a tiny bit given the chilies and the pepperjack combo. I didn't find it spicy at all, just chili flavors. My only other criticism is the sandwich did get a little soggy/flimsy, probably because there was so much turkey piled on there. Personally, I thought the soup was just okay -- it was heavy on the basil for my preferences and I also like for my tomato soup to be very smooth. This still had fairly decent-sized chunks of tomato in it. My parents both sampled and liked it. Honestly think this was more of a personal preference thing. Ultimately, we were all VERY happy with our charming and comfortable lunch experience here. My mom mentioned being interested in returning for her birthday, so that's high praise! I can definitely see why so many people speak so highly of this restaurant. I look forward to returning to PB and also finally giving DS a try in the future.

Honestly, it sort of looks like home from the outside, too! There's a sweet memorial for a dog who has passed near the front door, honoring their favorite spot, which I thought was precious. Even though I popped in only like 35 minutes til close, I was welcomed warmly and not rushed. Their menu has American classics like hamburgers, chicken tenders, sandwiches, hot dogs, onion rings, fries, etc. It seems like burgers are the main attraction here, though, so I got their take on a mushroom and Swiss burger (my fav) and some French fries. The sweet tea I had to drink was perfectly refreshing and quite sweet, just the way I like it. I do remember thinking the total was a touch high for a single patty, fairly thin burger, but it is what it is. At least it was clearly fresh and high quality, which is much more than you can say for fast food. Like I said, food was cooked fresh but still came out to me in a timely manner. Heck, the fries were still so hot I burned my mouth a teeny bit! I was just trying to eat and get out of their hair before closing, so my bad there haha. Frozen-fried crinkle cuts but they were nice and crispy. My biggest complaint about the whole experience was the salt was sort of just thrown on them in a pile at the top. So a few fries were extremelyyyyy salty and others not at all. The burger was, as expected, the star here! Cooked about medium-well, it was still plenty juicy despite the relative thinness of the patty. The mushrooms and Swiss cheese were so buttery and melty together. They add bacon to their mushroom and Swiss and honestly I could take it or leave it. Some of it wasn't as crispy as I prefer, and I think the mushrooms add the extra savory punch so bacon makes it a little heavy, but I'm honestly nit picking here. It was a very yummy burger. I very much enjoyed myself. This is the kind of spot my folks would love, so I hope to bring them back in the future, and also to come try the delightful-sounding Moon Pie banana pudding!
