We absolutely love this dog friendly hotel! It is in a great central location. Waiting in our room was a goody bag with grain free treats for our dog, and a nice clean bed for him in the room. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel was perfectly clean and charming. There is a complimentary beer tap in the lobby!!! The cafe downstairs has a dog friendly sitting area- attached to hotel lobby-where they serve delicious brunch items, spirits, beer and excellent coffee! We can't say enough good things about commodore hotel! We will definitely be back and highly recommended!! read more

This is a cool little boutique hotel. The lobby decor is hip. I like the way the room was set up. It was very comfortable. The staff was awesomely... they lend you record players and vinyl. Yes it is indeed noisy but if you have a good white noise app that sounds like the ocean the traffic kind of blends into it. Or there's ear plugs. The air is so crisp and clean here it's delicious. Great location. Free beer in the afternoon. They really should add wine, that's an oversight. We really liked Fred. Room 308 was the bomb suite. read more

My favorite place to stay in Astoria! Easy walk to most things in town, wonderful, incredibly friendly staff, great coffee shop/cafe on the main floor and loads of charm. PS: Don't be scared away by the idea of shared showers - There are two very nice showers on each floor shared by only a handful of guests. This place is full of charm. The staff are great. Fred poured us a nice beer on our arrival. He was kind. The Hotel is very clean and really simple, but gorgeous. The rooms are small, we had 2 rooms for the 4 of us, but cozy, snug and clean. No big deal that the bathroom was down the hall. We checked in on a quiet night, and actually saw no one besides the Fred. In the morning we sat and had our coffee, nice brew by the way, and listened to a vinal. Also ordered food from the cafe next door. I've never had better quiche! If you are staying in Astoria and you don't want to stay in a cookie cutter hotel, come to The Commodore. Stayed here last April and am just getting around to writing a review. I adore this place. It's exactly what you want in a renovated historic hotel. Whoever owns this place really knows what they're doing. I appreciate the quality workmanship that is apparent in the rooms and the entire hotel, really. Nothing was gross, everything was clean. The bed was really comfortable. I was also delighted at how sound-proof the windows and walls seem to be. The price was very reasonable for the level of quality. I love the simple, minimal design. It's also nice how there's a great cafe right next door to the lobby. Oh yeah. They also have a nicely curated selection of dvds that you can check out (including the Goonies, but we were too embarrassed to ask for that one!) The only thing they're missing is an old-fashioned black and white photo booth in the lobby! read more

Quaint and Cozy Historical Hotel. The Queen bed was nice and comfy. Good size TV displayed on the wall. Room's tastefully and moderately decorated. Our room had a private bathroom. Plenty of body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the dispenser's. Robes are available in our room. The Commodore is very close to the Colombia River. We could watch the large ships motoring by (very cool). We spotted a few Sea Lions. Great places to eat nearby (Astoria Coffee House & Bistro had the best Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast ever). There is a little coffee house (St. 14 Coffee) downstairs. Good for a cup of coffee or quick bite. Easy walk to the Water Front. Highly suggest visiting the Astoria Column (164 spiral steps to the top). If you have a chance check out Ft. Clatsop ( Lewis and Clark National Park). When visiting Astoria, we would stay here again. read more

George beer, movie library, comfortable beds, cozy, great price, cable, beautiful shared bathrooms, robes! The only CON would be since there is no A/C, it gets pretty noisy when you open the window. Problem solved with ear plugs! We stayed in the smallest room with shared bathrooms. The bed was very comfortable. It is SMALL! But very cozy and plenty of space for two people. Only 4 stars because our room is impossibility small. We were here for five nights and the room was really too small. Perhaps for one or two nights it would be fine.There is not any room to open two suitcases without tripping over it when you walk out the door. Of course there's nothing they can do about this but if they took out an in table and chair and add 2 suitcase racks it would be more doable. Otherwise the hotel is extremely clean and well run. It's a little bit like a McMenamins with bath and shower down the hall - extremely clean at every time a day. Happy hour is free local beer between 5-8. Negatives: Cabin was very small, hotels give our free ear plugs for a reason, no parking included. Four of us got two rooms, a tiny cabin (ridic clean separate shower and toilet rooms down the hall) and a suite, which was 50% more expensive but had a bathroom and a sofa and more elbow room. A very cute Ace-hotel knockoff, with Stumptown serving coffeeshop, and free record players for rent. That being said, that's pretty much all the good things about it. For a hotel being listed in Willamette Week's Oregon Coast guide as the "bougie" option, it really isn't. We stayed in the option with the shared bathroom, which was actually fine. The bathrooms were private, single use, and well cleaned. I was aware going in that there would be more noise than usual being that it's an older building, but I wasn't expecting worse than motel level. They send a noise warning (ironically AFTER you confirm a reservation) and provide free earplugs, but wouldn't it just be easier to better insulate the rooms? The room was small and very bare bones, fine for one night, but the window barely opened wide enough to let in a breeze. So even though it was cold in the hallway and outside, the room was a toaster oven with no A/C or fan. Let me just note, I extensively read reviews here and on booking.com and all noted the noise but said it wasn't that bad with earplugs. Let me give you a dose of reality. From staying in motels and airbnbs, to staying in 5 star hotels, I've experienced the gamut of noise levels. And this was not appropriate for what it was marketed as: a boutique hotel. The walls were paper thin. You can hear EVERYTHING. Even with the windows closed (as they are old and don't close properly). The guys to our right sounded like they were sitting on OUR bed talking to us, and the TV at the other neighbors was not even that loud but distinct enough I could pick up movie dialogue. Then, our poor upstairs neighbor, congested and coughing, was hurling spit balls and yelling at his wife (or girlfriend?) all night. It was unbearable. The bed was ok, but heavily used, and my partner and I kept rolling into each other due to the dent in the middle. We survived the night, but likely won't be staying again. If you're a heavy sleeper and don't mind some congestion and heat, it's a perfectly cute hotel aesthetically. But if you are hoping for a relaxing place to rest and enjoy down time, look elsewhere. read more

I have read many previous reviews complaining about the street noise, shared bathrooms, and lack of amenities at the Commodore Hotel. However, one quick browse through the hotel's website will tell you all that you need to know and more (e.g. "our gorgeous restrooms and showers are shared and located conveniently at the end of each hallway"), no surprises. That said, in light of these complaints--some true, some exaggerated--I could not have left the Commodore happier. My husband and I stayed in a suite for two nights and, though not requested, we did have a private bathroom. (I will say this was a plus, but knowing that the hotel was originally a boarding house, I was not surprised to learn that some of the bathrooms were shared.) We also faced the street, which did mean bit of noise at night, but we had no trouble getting our eight hours in. Every staff member we came into contact with was both friendly and accommodating. (Though I did have some trouble reaching the front desk via our room phone, which made it difficult to get answers quickly from the third floor.) While the Commodore does not offer all the amenities of a five-star hotel (i.e. complimentary breakfast, shampoos and conditioners, etc.), given the price, location, and quality of service, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to spend your mornings and evenings. read more

Okay first off it's in the heart of the old town section of Astoria. Lots of shops a pier and great walking. It's an old fashion hotel of a bygone era. Still has wi-fi and tv. A small clean room w/ a sink. No air conditioning but radiator heat. Bathroom is down the hall. They are friendly and the price is great if your on a budget. They start you off with a short glass of beer from their tap! Delicious! So far I'm charmed. read more

The Commodore is stylish and clean, and the service is friendly. But, good God, Lemon! THE NOISE. My husband said it sounded like "every car was plowing through a field of bears." But I would say it was more like... "dump trucks driving through a nitroglycerin plant." We specifically chose a room that did NOT come with a "noise disclaimer" (suite 209), and, if we had a "quiet" room, then I feel bad for the poor saps who had the noisy ones. It was the worst night of sleep I've ever had in a hotel. I was so damn tired and cranky in the morning, my husband and I skipped the sightseeing and just went home. The Commodore needs to invest in some serious soundproofing. If they did, this would be a 5-star experience. But until then, two stars. P.S. The hotel has free wi-fi, but it was super spotty and barely worked. BEWARE! I stayed here and someone tried to break into my room. Not all of the rooms are secure, and I tried explaining that to the staff. The people that where staying here where very, very sketchy, it seems to be more like a youth hostel than a hotel. The staff here are not concerned about your well-being, just the hotels image. I almost gave this hotel 2 stars but what I experienced last weekend wasn't entirely their fault. It's a beautiful, clean and friendly place. Loved my room and the bed and the desk help was very friendly. What a deal. But then on my second night (Saturday), I felt like the place turned into a brothel. Look let's face it, certain types of relations are going to happen in a hotel, but the walls here are so paper thin, you could hear wailing throughout the day and night. At one point I went back to my room for a little afternoon nap. There was screaming coming from my hallway and then out across the way on the other side of my room. I mean, a cacophony of mating calls. And they all sounded like they were in my room. Great for the people that are involved, but so disturbing to the rest of us. This went on the next morning as well. They give you earplugs but they only help so much. I even put my headphones on for an hour thinking it would all end by then. Nope! When I took them off, the calls of mating everywhere. I mean, should I be allowed to scream and moan at all hours even though I might not be doing it? At one point I yelled out "Just finish already!" Like I said, some of this should be expected, but this was like being in a cave. The icing on the cake? I went to the bathroom around midnight on Saturday and there was a woman sprawled out on the floor with her head in the toilet. I was like "Are you okay?" And she just looked up at me in a drunken haze. I really think the place needs to post something in the room about "noises" and that your neighbors can hear your every breath or moan. Not sure anyone would care, but if they had a policy maybe a phone call would interrupt the discourteous lovemaking. I think next time I'm going to spend an extra 80 dollars so I don't have to feel like I'm in college again. read more

I thought I loved this place but recently had a disappointing experience. They really need to come up with a better plan than always leaving the front desk unattended. If you call from your room it doesn't reach the girl in the basement...who knows what she's doing. Not once did we actually see her at the front desk. Then once there was what appeared to be the hotel manager getting something in the safe and she says "she'll be right back". So I stood around for 20 minutes waiting. It's totally ridiculous. Someone played music all night and be prepared to not sleep if it's hot out and you have to leave windows open. read more

When in Astoria, I stay at the Commodore! The Commodore has a long history as a 'single room only' hotel that I'm sure you can read about on their website so I won't waste precious bits and bytes on retelling their story. If I were to ever refurbish an antique building to meet modern standards while still maintaining a feel of old but new this is exactly the way I would do it. The Hotel is far from luxurious but it's better than that. It speaks of the working class people and what their needs are as they are simple and require little fancy nor flair. It is a room with a bed and a sink and has a shared shower and commode down the hall, and for a few extra dollars you get a window. Nothing more and nothing less. But what really makes this place so good is the quality of the work & materials that went into, what I imagine, was a ground up restoration. The floors, walls, doors and stairs have a sturdy feel to them which is a compliment to both the original building and it's latest retrofit makeover. In the lobby you will find a very open and easy comfort to the lounge chairs and sofa. Attached is the 14th St. Coffee Shop, and it rocks but that is for another review. On a side note some say that this retro hotel is akin to the ACE Hotel in Portland, and I've heard great things about it too. The benefit to staying in this "budget" hotel is that it is situated right in the shopping and happening district of Astoria. Outside my window was the very cool looking original JC Penney's store which I had to go to (more on that later) and the other direction out my window was the mighty Columbia. If you ever have the pleasure of visiting my cherished Astoria do stay at the Commodore, you'll be happy you did. Interesting place to stay once, don't think we'll go back. I love the architecture and interior design. It is impressive how the remodel managed to keep a lot of the old details, and everything else is ultra-modern. The 'economy suites' offer a lot of things I like: comfy bed and nice bedding, alarm clock radio that is also an iPhone/iPod dock, wall mounted flat TV/DVD player with free movies at the front desk, cozy towels. However, there are some drawbacks: First, the noise. The rooms are right above a stop light on Hwy 30, so you'll hear every semi through the old windows, plus the 6:30 trash truck, plus people yelling at each other in the street after midnight. Then, you'll also hear any neighbors through the thin door and apparently-completely-un-insulated interior walls. Then, there are just a lot of things missing for a $110/night room, such as more than 2 hangers, hooks or anything to hang your coat on, or any kind of dresser. Every other place I've stayed in at that price range either has a coffee maker in the room, or comes with breakfast -- you'll get neither at the Commodore, but the coffee shop downstairs is nice. Finally, the wifi only worked dependably downstairs. So, I think anyone who likes architecture and/or interior design should experience it at least once, just don't plan on getting too much sleep. read more

If you don't mind sharing a bathroom/shower with others the cabin option is a hell of a deal at $59. We stayed Christmas day/night and it wasn't crowded at all. Great downtown location and a very nice job of remodeling and updating a historical building. The cabin rooms are very small but they have great touches and the counter help is extremely friendly. It's worth pointing out that in a building this old the street noise from outside may not be as distracting as the noise from the other patrons. Although not a problem for us given the holiday, you can hear every step and word from the rooms next door. read more

Loved everything about this place. Very European style rooms. Within walking distance to tons of cool spots not to mention the cafe next door. We were greeted with local draft beer at check in and fell asleep to our in house rented movie. Bed was super comfy. The shared showers and bathrooms were spotless and super cute. I will definitely be staying here again my next visit in Astoria but I may bring my white out noise fan. It was too stuffy in the rooms to leave the windows shut with no circulation. Totally awesome hotel. Our room, a suite, was gigantic and had a couch and 4 or 5 huge windows - one had great views of the water and bridge. Great price for $97. The hotel is craftsman style and has really neat details both in the lobby and rooms - beautiful wood floors and window trim. The bed was incredibly comfortable (so was the couch!), the shower head amazing, and it really felt warm and cozy. On the website, there are warnings that some rooms are super noisy (ours was one of them) but I didn't find the road noise to be terribly disturbing. If you're a light sleeper, just bring earplugs. Fresh Stumptown coffee is delivered from Astoria Coffee House every morning and is available self serve in the lobby. Very cool hotel in an understated, charming way. read more

Great location to walk anywhere downtown...and I had a "suite" which had it's own bathroom - I wasn't into sharing during my 2 day break in Astoria". The room was clean, nicely restored however the hotel was very noisy - I suspect a gut restoration was done but no soundproofing when new sheetrock was installed..I could be guessing but I could clearly hear conversations in the adjacent rooms, movies, hallway conversations etc. This is why the earrplugs in the bedside table. My room was a little over $129/night w/ tax which was ok. I like the efforts to save resources w/ shampoo/soap in a dispenser rather than bottles, the beer nightcap and movie was fun. read more

I stayed in a room with a private bathroom. Here is a synopsis: 1. Yes, the front-facing rooms are VERY noisy. However, they disclose this in advance so this is all fair game. My Yelp rating does not factor in street noise in any way. That said, the super creaky floors were a bit ridiculous. I'm not sure how easy it is to remediate something like this but it needs to be fixed at some point. 2. Location is what you are paying/sacrificing for. 3. The staff are 100% awesome. They are a strong asset. 4. The listening station concept is VERY interesting but I was unable to get a seat in that section of the lobby in the morning. Still, a very fun and unique concept. 5. The building is gushing with character and history. I love that they share with us the condition that the building used to be in before they renovated it. Very cool! 6. Luckily, it was not very hot when I stayed there but I can easily imagine a scenario where the customer is forced to chose between more noise or maintaining a comfortable temperature. Well first I didnt know that the bathroom comes to share. Actually I wouldnt mind at all if I knew it first...Ive been to NY, so you can guess. I bought a deal on Groupon, and I couldnt find anything about the sharing bathroom. Otherwise, great hotel, love the staff, decorations and vintage atmoshpere. Plus their coffee is very good. Oh and one more thing, you have very limited space and have no table to put your stuff except nighttables. Dont forget your blow dryer too, they dont have it. Also It smelled a little funky when I first stepped in, but I dont wanna complain too much so you wont take my review seriously. ........................ I woke up because of some smell...kind of cooking onion? It would be good to sniff if you are in a restaurant, but it is pretty weird in the middle of a hotel room, especially you wake up sniffing cooking onion. It is hard to write a review on this place because on one hand I really liked it, but on the other it was so so. I liked the look and feel of the place. Boutique hotel, very minimalist. The coffee shop below is great and perfect for breakfast and lunch. The staff is super friendly. If you have a dog, it is probably also great. The downside is the noise. You really hear all the street noise. It also does not have AC, so if it is warm, then you have to open a window which also increases the noise. The wood floors also creek very loudly so they will wake up your partner and you can hear your neighbors upstairs as they walk around. In summary - looks nice, very friendly staff, but you may not get the best nights sleep. read more

I came here desperate to get out of Portland during the wildfires. I booked quickly, but I wish I'd done more research. First bad sign: After booking, I called ahead to ask about what the hotel was doing in terms of COVID protocols. The person at the desk said they didn't know. I should have cancelled then. When I arrived, there were two people working behind the desk. One had no mask on. There is a tiny plexiglass shield hanging over a small part of the desk area, but it's miniscule and open on all sides. I thought perhaps the desk clerk had the mask off just briefly. No. I saw this person multiple times on three separate days--behind the desk, in the lobby, out front. Not once wearing a mask. This is not ok!!! And it's also against the law. We're in a global pandemic and we know COVID is passed through the air. Another clerk was wearing a gator neck covering that they pulled up. Also not okay! We know that gators and bandanas don't protect from COVID. People working inside A HOTEL need to wear actual protective masks! This is also the law in Oregon. When I got in my room, there were fingerprints on the tv (which didn't work anyway), cobwebs in several places, and a dirty floor. The noise from the hallways and streets is so loud that earplugs don't filter out the noise. The toilet in my room ran loudly the whole time. There were fruit flies all over the room. I paid extra for a private bathroom and can't believe how expensive this place is ($220/night) given how dirty and loud it is, and truly I'm astonished that the staff thinks it's okay to not wear masks. I do not recommend staying here, especially during COVID. What a mess. read more
