I was in Greensboro the day before mother's day and decided to stop by to get my mom a bag of their specialty coffee beans, expecting it to be a high quality blend. It was incredibly embarrassing and disappointing on Mother's Day morning when we brewed her gift, just to have some of the worst coffee we've had in a while. The beans were incredibly burnt and bitter in flavor, yet lacked any body and was almost clear in color even when using a large amount of grounds. I hate that I wasted my money and even more to have disappointed my mom. read more

First time visiting this coffee shop. Parking was a little hard to do but street parking is fine if it isn't a busy time. Two hour limits. The vibe and atmosphere of this place reminds me a lot of Denver, Colorado. It made me feel like I was at home (co native). I ordered a white chocolate vanilla iced latte which was so so good! The barista made it special for me as I couldn't decide on anything. He was very nice. I used to be a barista and loved it! TIP YOUR BARISTAS! I always always tip them because I know how grueling the job can be sometimes and it's just common courtesy. He was great and fun to talk to also. The space is comfy and cozy. I love that they have a private room where you can chill out on a couch, watch movies, play video games or strum some tunes on the guitar....or even play some drums! It's such a cute hidden gem of a place. They also have another room with a pool table and a piano next to the restroom. I came here with a good friend, we utilized the guitar and piano! We played and sang songs it was an all around fun time. I love love love that this place has a gender neutral bathroom. Very accommodating and up to date. We moved away from Lindley Park but go back every weekend for the coffee at Common Grounds. It's my fave neighborhood shop--of any neighborhood I've ever lived in. I do cold brew with pistachio and it makes my whole day better. The baristas all all awesome and the ambience is on point. I studied there in grad school. I went there on dates with my partner. This an awesome place to hang out, but only an OK coffee shop. The espresso drinks are all creative and good, they're all prepared well, and the selection of wines and beers are great for when you go here to catch some music or whatever event is happening (props to whoever books acts and schedules events, they're all fun). The atmosphere is great, especially with the art gallery, pool table/darts, and arcade in the back. If I want to chill with some friends and drink coffee or drink a beer, I go to Common Grounds. My only problem is with the actual coffee itself. It's mediocre. The house blend is perfectly palatable, but Fortuna Roasters has produced far better house blends for other local restaurants and cafes. Given that the house is the only coffee they offer, I expected something more distinctive. The espresso tastes like Starbucks espresso - perfectly good in a sugary mixed drink, terribly bitter and overly smoky on its own. If they upped the quality of the coffee, this would be a 5 star review. Go here if you prioritize hanging out and having a good time over an excellent cup of coffee, which I often do. read more

I really want to love this place. The atmosphere is great and there are a lot of laid back customers and baristas. However, I simply cannot support a business that does not make any visible effort to support the environment. There is not even a recycling bin available to customers, nor compostable cups. I feel that these changes are easy enough to implement, yet there has been no visible effort on part of the company. I will return when there is a recycling bin available to customers. read more

Update to my initial one star. The manager was nice to reach out and apologize. It sounds like they are working on the gluten free issues. I searched for this placed based on the GF comments. I have celiac, so my coffee was ruined after using the pasta stir stick. I should have noticed though. I wish them good luck - they seem nice. Not a great experience for me. I was in town for a day and was in need of coffee. I chose this place because of the gluten free goodies, but they were all out. Then, I went to stir my coffee and realized the stir sticks were actually raw pasta. Since I have celiac, the coffee went into the trash and I stopped at Starbucks. This place is neat. I went on a Saturday afternoon. It was completely dead--with only the guy manning the counter and a young girl watching cartoons. The man working was really nice. He even made suggestions about what to order. I ended up going with the Americano. The Americano was fantastic. I dare say it would match any coffee shop in the Triad area. The floor space was open with comfortable seating. It's a rather small space, but the layout made it look much larger. One pleasant surprise was the more than ample parking. Maybe it was just the time and day that I visited, but there were no shortage of parking spots. It's a nice place! I like it! Though, frankly, as one who frequents triad coffee shops-- outside of its convenient location for the residents on and around Elam, I can't see how it's very different. read more

Common Grounds is a really nice place to see in comparison to several of the coffee shops in the general area. As the kind of guy to hole up in a place for hours, this is my go-to place to sit around and get some work done. It's usually a pretty quiet place, with the most noise coming from casual conversations or the music playing whatever's on queue. The general aesthetic is simple and a bit rough, but it's all pleasing on the eyes. The dimly lit, dark-colored interior does more to make the place feel relaxing, compared to other places that generally have bright lights and bright colors. Coffee's great. I'm able to drink it plain black, which is more than I can say for other places around here. They've even got a few enjoyable blended beverages here, especially for someone like me who can't stand them most of the time. As far as foodstuffs, it's mostly baked goods from a local bakery. There's a sort-of tucked away breakfast menu that I never see get used, though. Fortunately, Common Grounds is right by several nice places for a full meal. One of their biggest features would probably be a large calendar that displays monthly events. They have weekly things like Mystery Movie Mondays and Open Mike Thursdays, and then other various music bookings, usually local artists. I've been to a few and they all have been good times. I even met and talked a little bit to a guy who's a regular where I work, which is cool. There's a couple of small things, like the free wi-fi that requires a sign in every 30 minutes or so, but their provider offers short and long term subscriptions for if you plan on frequenting this place. Plus, the workers have a habit of sitting outside talking to guests, but still keep an eye out for people walking in or at the counter. I will say, though, one of my biggest gripes is that there's an unfortunate fly problem around a set of couches and chairs around a table near the front. They have a fly strip that doesn't seem to work, as there's at least 4 or 5 of them in said area. Fortunately, it's in this one specific spot, as the rest of the place is very fly-free. It's probably the location right by windows that explains it. All in all, however, Common Grounds is a great place. I've been frequently coming here before and after work to cool down, and I wish I knew about it earlier! read more

Creative combinations made for the coffee drinks here, but I have never been blown away by the coffee. That said, if you love a sugary concoction with a mild coffee flavor, do try some of their speciality drinks as that is what you will receive. Stopped in today for the first time as I was looking for baked goods from Wallflour (vegan bakery). The woman at the counter (late 20s with open hoop septum piercing) did nothing to make me feel welcome. I asked if they had anything other than the 2 brownies I saw and she pointed to a small cooler and mentioned another item. I asked what that was and she brushed me off, saying I could look at it and see. I had a newborn in my arms and was really just hoping for a brief description of the item. She was just cold and unwelcoming. Although they seem to have plenty of yummy coffee drinks and several mill alternatives (awesome!), I won't bother coming back because the service was sub-par. Prices aren't bad and the atmosphere is funky (fresh) and quirky. The coffee is awesome, staff is friendly, and they make those little designs in your drinks that I love. I got the Marilyn Monroe with 2 extra shots, size tall, and the ratio of coffee to milk was perfect for those who like a triple shot tall at Starbucks, this was about the same, if not a quad. Great shop. The drinks are all top notch and the outdoor patio is great when the weather is nice. Free and fast wifi (lookin' at you TSCH) makes it a great place to study. In the few years I've been coming, the shop's gotten cozier and more friendly, with an ever expanding menu of items. I was very disappointed. I ordered a decaf caramel latte as I cannot have caffeine. I was told by the man making the coffee that it was ridiculous that I would even drink coffee if not caffeinated. I told him it was a medical problem and I still liked the taste. At that point received an eye roll. I left with my coffee and after a few sips realized it wasn't decaf and that I was drinking caffeinated. I can tell as I start having tremors. I called the shop back and just asked to speak with someone in charge to try and explain my problem and was told to just go to a different shop in the future. Extremely poor customer service. This place is the best coffee shop in the Triad. The welcoming atmosphere provides instant nostalgia of the multi-themed drinks/characters. This hot spot for casual conversation is awesome and has very unique charm. Whether it be Pretty Ricky or good ole Justin as your barista, you will definitely not be let down by their customer service and close attention to the details. Whether you want some Kava Kava to chill out or some espresso to get you going, they are always right on it. This place is my favorite coffee shop in Greensboro. It maybe my favorite coffee shop in North Carolina even. I sometimes go to a Starbucks because of the convenience of their drive through window, but when I want the full experience I go to Common Grounds. This place hosts great venues for local talents every week. The art on the wall, the back hidden room with couches and guitars, and the piano and pool table are just extra touches to an already amazing establishment.
