Decided to go for an early Valentines dinner in Utah County as we have had some success with places such as Black Sheep. We choose Communal right in the middle of downtown based on previous reviews. For so many reasons, this might be our new go to for "special date night." 1)The food was perfect and unique. The complimentary bread needs special mention, they say it's not quite sourdough but whatever it is, it was amazing. We choose the persimmons (which I though was weird but my wife said was amazing), funeral potatoes and the sweet potato as sides. If you like cheese and hash browns, the funeral potatoes are heaven, holy frijoles. Our server recommend the pork loins. Not only were the huge but cooked to perfection. They were served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes which was probably the only big miss, they lacked any real flavor which I guess was meant to be. 2)The service was juuuuuust right. Good service, now more than ever, is hard to find. Our server (I forgot her name, sorry!!) always had our drinks filled and allowed us to have a good conversation. The small design of the place allowed for us to interact with the two cooks and pretty much every other staff. We even had a conversation about our favorite breakfast places. So cool. 3)The cost was what you would expect of a "nicer place." Our meal and a soda cost 95 bucks including tip. Not something I would do often, but will still do on special occasions. 4)The setting is the real star of the show. On their website they talk about the small settings and a "communal" type place. It really does live up to the hype. At first it was a little weird to set so close to someone but we found a perfect balance with those around us. One group we just did not talk to at all and that was fine. The others around us were super nice and we shared recommendations about types of food and even places to eat. There was an older nice couple from Oregon who were the best and we learned about their family. Super weird, I know, but it just seemed right and cool. If you made to the end, you may have decided that this is not for you, but I personally would recommend everyone to try it even once. Astounding cuisine! This place never disappoints and is always original and exciting!

My wife and I walked in last Friday for lunch as my wife had heard many wonderful things about the restaurant and food. To our disappointment we stood in the front for 5 minuted with NO ONE to greet us or even acknowledge us waiting. The restaurant looked busy, and no waiter to see us to any seat, I had to ask the chef where the server was and he had no idea. So when I told my wife that, we patiently waited again, and then the server who eventually sees us, and says to us rudely "Come back in 30 minutes"! Not even a "hello sorry we're busy can you please come back in 30 mins," it was rude and literally NO customer service! We will never return. read more

Was not impressed. We'd heard good things about this place for years and finally had the opportunity to try it out but it was disappointing. Did not like the time interior of the place. The tables are right next to each other and felt awkward . Every item we got was subpar. read more

Communal gives off a very cozy and relaxed vibe, I enjoy getting dinner after a long day at work. Food is generally quality. For some reasons the winter menu wasn't as good the night we went. On the winter menu we ordered the goat cheese walnut citrus salad, flank steak, mashed potatoes and pork belly. Pork belly was cook to perfection with a perfect amount of fat and meat with apples and apple butter on the side. The salad and the mashed potatoes didn't stand out. Tasted like regular salad and mashed potatoes that anyone could make. steak was a little chewy and bland for a $30 steak. Overall it was still good food, I just expected a lil more from Communal. read more

I had only had communal for breakfast and hadn't been in years but we ordered their food to-go during the covid outbreak. Oh my gosh it was so good. We got the beef stroganoff, roasted brussel sprouts, the beet salad, and their butterscotch pudding - I was raving over all of it. We ordered their dinner for two package which was $35 dollars (plus $5 for the dessert) and I honestly felt like it was a very reasonable price for delicious, filling, hot food. The only negative is that when we ordered through grub hub it showed a different menu item and we were surprised to get stroganoff. Luckily we liked it so much that it wasn't a problem at all. Seasonally adjusted menu....yes please. My wife and I loved our meal, the main dishes and the sides were so well thought out and tasted incredible. The waiter was incredibly knowledgeable of the menu and how the flavors paired well together. Highly recommend for a great meal. Get reservations because the restaurant is small and they don't accept walk-ins. read more

The food here is delicious. They use high quality ingredients and are inventive with what they have. The wait staff are friendly and attentive, though maybe some hover a bit too much. The environment inside is quite cozy, but it's a double edged sword in my opinion, as you're sandwiched in pretty close depending on where you're seated. Started with the green eggs and ham as an appetizer and wow, it was delicious. The perfect balance of crunch and flavor. After that we tried the bone marrow which wasn't anything special. I've been twice. Once for dinner and once for brunch. It's OK. Not worth the hype I had heard about it. Service was OK. Dinner server was friendly but not great about keeping drinks full. Brunch server wasn't very friendly but did make sure we had everything we needed. Did like the cornbread stuffing and bread served at the beginning of dinner. Hanger steak was very tough and chewy. Absolute top notch food and easily in the top three restaurants of Provo. It's certainly on the pricier side but their upscale atmosphere and quality service makes Communal the perfect date night for someone special. It's proximity to downtown Provo also makes it part of the growing local scene as its close to many boutiques and dessert spots. While Communal is not within my budget to visit often, it's certainly a place I treat myself to whenever I'm able! read more

A visit to Communal was pending for a long time, especially after reading the review of friedn Yelpette Siobhain. It was truly amazing, from the atmosphere, to the super attentive and professional service, to the food. I liked the quality of utensils, real towels in the bathrooms and good quality napkins at the table, and of course rotating art in the walls. All these details matter and create ambiance, and this was really good for us. We shared some dishes and every single of them was excellent. The broccolini so tender and flavorful, the salad so fresh, the meat fabulous with a sauce that tastes a bit like chumichurri but has different ingredients (waiter explained everything). Seeing the open kitchen, everything so clean, fresh and that sense of small bistro where everything seems so personalized is guarantee of success for this restaurant. I love Provo's vibe so much and Communal alone makes this town worth the visit. Can't wait to go back. read more

Do you want amazing farm to table, freshly cooked food with amazing beer selections and wine that compliments the entire meal? Communal is pricy but worth it. I usually hate butternut squash, but the way Communal prepares it made me savor every bite. The staff are simply outstanding. They love food, are friends immediately and we have picked up multiple wine habits from their incredible recommendations. One of the best dinners I have had in a long time. This restaurant was super accommodating to our party of six when we had reservations for 9pm but showed up at 9:50pm! We were in town for business and didn't expect to take so long getting off our flights and into a rental car. We chose two items from each category- I didn't take any pictures as we all dug in immediately. We shared 'Chili watermelon', 'beet salad', and the funeral potato croquette (the best!!). Then onto the ginger chicken and mushroom pasta (to die for) with cauliflower, broccolini, Lima beans, mashed potatoes, polenta cakes, and risotto! All was so amazing! Communal is my absolute favorite spot to eat in Provo. It's so refreshing to have a nice sit down experience with the most unique and delicious farm to table meals. Food, ambiance and location are all excellent. Cocktails are a bit spendy for how little alcohol they are allowed to put in them so I'd recommend wine- they have a great selection. Service was pretty good - although they never made it back to our table with the water pitcher after we sat down. The desserts are hilariously enormous, although delicious - a nod to Provo, I guess. I ordered the grilled peaches with whipped buratta and balsamic drizzle-this was delicious as I ate half for my appetizer and the rest as my dessert! I'm editing this because someone from Communal did reach out to me to get more information. It shows someone cares, which I appreciate. We (party of four) walked in forty minutes before it closed in the afternoon (so they could get ready for the dinner crowd), it was very empty of patrons and the lady who came to seat us said it would be ten minutes to "get out table ready". She was quite abrupt. We looked at a menu for a few minutes, staff was walking around, no one was friendly, we finally told the hostess we would just leave and she didn't care one bit. It's really sad how down hill it has gone. It used to be a top notch restaurant with great food and very friendly people. read more

I've lived in Provo for years and haven't gone to this place until now. Big mistake! Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection and had such great flavor! They had a variety of meat and vegan options and everything was well-plated. Foodie heaven! The seared pork belly had a delicious flavor, the braised short rib was super tender and the roasted chicken was just clean but flavorful!
