We'll, had the worst meal here and this is why. The atmosphere was excellent and we were very excited. Then the wheels fell off. The pear salad was not washed and I ate dirt. The concept of this restaurant is awesome. I love the community atmosphere. The waitstaff is friendly and fun to interact with. The food is ok, I expected it to be better. The Chorizo and Cornbread Stuffing, the Beets, and the Spiced Pear Salad were delicious. The Mint - Lime mocktail was fabulous. Everything else was so-so (and we ordered quite a few dishes). To enjoy this place you have to be looking for an upscale, some might say pretentious, food experience. The Brussel sprout and jerk bison kebab starters were phenomenal. Peach salad was okay. The grilled artichoke hearts were amazing but the flank steak was not something we will order again. Overpriced flank steak that my mom would have done better. The pork was good albeit dry without the small amount of sauce on the plate. To be honest the main course was slightly underwhelming. Now lets talk dessert. My friend ordered the banana tart and we both gagged! It was so strong on over ripe banana, with burnt marshmallow mess on top. There was nothing redeeming about that. However, the butterscotch pudding was so dreamy. It was like a butterbeer dessert with oreo pieces. Loved it! The chamomile honey cake was surprisingly the best part of the experience. I would have liked a moist cake rather than a dry biscuit. But it was very unique and I would definitely go back for dessert. It's all very par and something's were super meh. I'm a huge dessert person and I didn't finish my dessert. We went twice just to see if maybe we ordered the wrong things but it just wasn't hitting the spot. The one thing we did get that was amazing was the stuffed ravioli in a mushroom sauce. Communal makes me feel like I'm the city! Not only is the ambience and vibe incredible, so is the food. We go here often with a small work group since they have wine and it never fails to impress. Last time, they were extra accommodating and provided a birthday candle and dessert for someone in our group as well as a customized menu for someone with an extreme allergy to eggs so she knew exactly what she could eat. I will say it's best experienced with a large group--hence the name--so you can sample lots of bits from the menu. Otherwise, you ring up quite the bill or limit yourself to only one entry or so. read more

I had a reservation through yelp. When my husband and I arrived, we walked through the doors on university, no servers or employees were in sight. Walked through the entire restaurant to the back entrance, still no employees in sight. Decided to sit in the waiting area. Then servers started coming back and forth between the cleaning area. We sat there for 10 minutes and did not get a single acknowledgment. In fact it looked like their servers were intentionally not looking at us. WOW was this food fantastic. My roommate and I stopped in together and split three sides/starters. Right when you get to your table you get a little spiel about the place and how sharing plates is encouraged. The ingredients were fresh and the dishes flavorful, the menu is highly descriptive, and the service was friendly and knowledgeable. The space itself is lovely and comfortable, with windows wrapped around two sides as it's on a corner location. Would absolutely return. read more

The chicken dish was tender and served at the right temp. The flavors exploaded gently in your mouth, sweet citrus, and I think a hint of soy sauce. A friend and I came here about a half hour before close on a Saturday night. Not crowded and got a table immediately. Really creative menu. For starters we chose the pork belly and country fried cauliflower, and the pork belly was PHENOMENAL. My favorite dish here by far. For dinner, we shared the flank steak and also had risotto and broccolini, also well prepared and delicious (the risotto was with farro grain and was excellent). Beware: this could be your next addiction. This is the first time I have had their brunch, so my review will be based on that just FYI before you wonder why I am only talking about brunch.. I decided to plan a little surprise for the hubs with some of his friends. When I made the reservation, it only allowed me to reserve it for 10 people which I thought was kinda specific, but once we got there it made sense. I was expecting to sit at the communal table, but they have a private room parallel to the kitchen that I had never seen before. It was SO nice to be in a private room - which can only seat 10, hence the cap on the number of people. Just in case you wanted to make a large reservation. We decided to go kinda family style and try a bunch of things on the menu. We ordered about half of what they have and everything BLEW me away! I was already expecting the meal to be fantastic since dinner there is unreal. But even with my high expectations, I was still very very satisfied. I am in love with this "farm-to-table" restaurant and think it deserves to be the Best of Provo in my opinion. I can't wait to go back and try everything! This review is for Communal's Saturday brunch, because I go at least every other week. I have tried and love all of the brunch options at Communal, but my favorite are the eggs benedict for a traditional brunch item, the deep fried french toast for my sweet tooth, and the pinestate when I'm extra hungry. I also love the coffee and mimosas offered with brunch. While the menu is enough to keep me coming back, I also love Communal because the staff there are some of the nicest you will ever meet. I would consider this the best restaurant in Provo. I've eaten dinner here many times with groups both small and large. Their seasonal menus never fail to disappoint. We always order family style so we get to taste a little of everything. Service is excellent (for Provo, meaning good elsewhere). Consistently busy, so make reservations in advance or plan to sit at the bar. Yes, the tables are small and close together, and yes, it's inconvenient to slide around to the far side of their large table. But this restaurant would hold its own in any large city, and it stands out in Provo as being one of the only creative and consistently delicious restaurants. read more

When my wife and I were first married (7 years ago) we lived in Provo and decided to treat ourselves one night we somewhat haphazardly decided upon going to Communal (it was election night 2012, of all nights, for some strange reason). It might sound like an exaggeration but it was literally one of the best dining decisions we (or I) have made ever. It still tops the list of the best restaurant experiences I've had. If I recall correctly we had deviled quail's eggs, a 1/2 chicken, and brown trout. Since it was just the two of us and it's served family style, we just shared with each other between the plates. It was all so good. Each bite was a new experience whether it was the first, tenth, or twentieth- the flavors never got boring or monotonous. Each bite was rich with flavor and allowed new discoveries within the palate expressed by the dish. Needless to say, if you have the opportunity to dine at Communal, please avail yourself the opportunity, you will not likely be disappointed. read more
