I stopped in about 8 different stores, but nothing was really speaking to my soul. It felt more like shopping in LA than what I thought Montana would be like. "Boz Angeles," as one of my uber drivers called it. I was dejected from not finding anything, and set off to meet the rest of the bachelor party at a steakhouse. It was then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw 2 rustic yellow chairs with a sign that read "Rare Bird Vintage." I entered into the small, highly curated space that is an ideal vintage shop. A healthy mix of clothing, old trinkets, bags, books, postcards, shoes, etc. The tags on everything have handwritten prices and notes on each individual item of when it's made. This attention to detail can only come from passion. I immediately pulled off a denim jacket off the rack and tried it on. The owner, Olivia, ran over and said "That looks so good on you, but I have another deadstock denim jacket from the early 90s that I think would look AMAZING on you." I tried it on and loved it, but it was slightly oversized. I'm really shy and insecure so I asked Olivia's opinion. "It honestly fits you perfect. It reminds me of something that I would see in Shibuya, this is a classic Japanese look." 90% of my personality is my trip to Japan and how much I love Japanese culture, so I had no choice. She and her mom, who also owns the shop, gave me a full rundown on how to wash this deadstock denim and why it is such a unique piece. You could just feel the passion oozing out of them. While checking out for both denim jackets, I found a sweatshirt for my girlfriend, a vintage coffee table book about Florence, and a cool Hokkaido pin. There was a sign that clearly stated the return policy, which I was not incompliance with - But I asked about an exchange anyways. Not only did the gal who helped me bring me other pairs and sizes jeans for me to try on, she did so with a kind heart and understanding beyond what I was deserving of. She took a direct monetary loss simply for my own satisfaction as she will not be able to return or sell the jeans I returned. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You earned a lifelong customer today! In the clothing section, there was a variety of sizes, and the men's clothing although not nearly as plentiful, still had some nice things. The non-clothing items were scattered around the store, and that compels you to look at everything because you might find a gem hidden somewhere. I had the sense Curated Closet was in a mid-season lull -- not quite stocked with spring or summer things, and not fully devoid of fall and winter items, but I expect this will take care of itself as life returns to whatever constitutes normal and people change out their closets. Still, for local crafts and some nice jewelry or fancy dishes, you can't go too far wrong here.

My thoughts- I've stopped into Second Wind a few times over the years in search of gear/clothing for personal use, but have consistently walked away disappointed if not empty-handed because their pricing is exorbitant and stupidly inflated, and I have no shame in using that sort of verbiage. An example from today that caught me so off guard I did some research, subsequently leading me to writing this review- a heavily used & visibly stained/faded Patagonia vest listed at $115, which is $16 less than the retail price on Patagonia's own website ($131). In my opinion and personal experience, this is not an isolated case- a lot of their merchandise is significantly worn, sometimes even dirty, and still priced like it's barely been used. While I did find and purchase a cute pair of pants that were reasonably priced and in good shape today, it unfortunately doesn't negate the general pattern of overpricing. Selling gear in highly used and rough condition for near-retail prices undermines the whole point of secondhand shopping and if we're being honest, many locals have access to outdoor industry discounts that include the benefit of full warranties. Trying to resell deeply used gear at near-retail prices just feels exploitative in that context. Even online secondhand platforms like Depop tend to be far more equitably priced and transparent about quality. I'm all for supporting secondhand and local businesses, but not when it starts to feel greedy and borderline shady. Pricing like this erodes trust and defeats the purpose of resale. There are more transparent, affordable, and community-minded options out there-- please shop around.
