This place is great it's much better than filling up the turnstiles and definitely more convenient.

Five stars to the lovely and hardworking TSA staff who kept a happy atmosphere and the line moving…read moreduring a significant government shutdown. We were in and out in less than ten minutes, even during a busy spring break season. I truly cannot be more thankful and appreciative.

tl;dr: Don't fly Southwest at this airport…read more The Southwest Terminal (Terminal 1) at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is one of the worst airport terminals I've experienced. The biggest problem is the layout. Once you pass through TSA in Terminal 1, you're essentially stuck there. Unlike many airports where you can walk between concourses after security, Terminal 1 is separated from the newer terminals. If you want access to other dining or amenities, you have to leave the secure area and go through TSA all over again. The food options are also disappointing. There are a couple of sit-down restaurants, such as Reservoir and Page, but most of the terminal consists of food court-style vendors with very limited seating. Finding a place to comfortably sit and eat can be a challenge, especially during busy travel periods. What really makes the experience frustrating is how crowded the terminal becomes when flights are delayed. Since Southwest operates heavily from Terminal 1, delays can quickly turn the gate areas into standing-room-only spaces. The terminal feels undersized for the number of passengers using it, and at times the congestion borders on uncomfortable. It's definitely a fire hazard and panic attack inducing. Part of the issue is that Terminal 1 is the airport's oldest terminal, dating back to the 1940s. While it has some historic character, it was not designed for modern passenger volumes and it shows. The only major advantage of Reagan National is its location. Being just minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. and Arlington is incredibly convenient. If proximity to the city is your top priority, it's hard to beat. But if you're flying Southwest through Terminal 1, be prepared for limited amenities, crowding, and a less-than-ideal airport experience. By the way, if there is any kind of event in D.C. expect the traffic here to be horrendous and good luck getting a Lyft. What a clusterf*ck.
