Negative stars if it was possible! My friend went here to get her morning coffee over the weekend and ended up facing racism. She's Indian and her name is definitely "hijab." The worst part is how management has responded to her with their non-apology. "Sorry our barista got your name wrong." Seriously?! Also, her name sounds NOTHING like "hijab." Anyone here know someone else named hijab?!?! They didn't even try to acknowledge the underlying issue about how unsettling and offensive seeing that word is as a person of color. Nor did they try to address how they will make sure their staff are trained and educated about racism and racial profiling. Sorry no longer supporting you. Nice space. Good seating area... the drip coffee was third wave but watery. Overall, unremarkable. It was worse than I would make myself with a French press, Aeropress, or Mr. Coffee machine - but not so bad that I would bother reviewing it. But the dirty chai latte is why I am writing. It was weak - I wasn't sure they put a shot in it (I was kinda watching and didn't hear them pull a shot). Worse, the chai was a 'syrup' that came out of a squirt bottle... and it tastes pretty gross. Kinda like fake sugars with a hint of chemicals. I wouldn't sell something that tasted like that if I ran this coffee shop. And - for what it's worth - I did use to run a coffee shop. Compass Coffee has become the Starbucks on DC in the sense that they have one on every corner. The quality of coffee is better than Starbucks and they offer a wide range of drinks from lattes to pour overs to nitro brews. In addition, they sell pastries like muffins (their chocolate chip banana is the best), kolaches, and more. The service is fast and this location is the biggest I've seen! This place is near my job so when I don't feel like walking to the Starbucks I will come here. I have tried a numerous of coffee here and they are more expensive then Starbucks. Bottom Line: A two-story coffee shop just a few steps from the Rosslyn Metro station serving coffee from locally roasted beans. Watch out green mermaid - the Marines are coming through! And by that I mean Compass Coffee, a small, local, Veteran owned coffee shop is taking away market share from the SBUX behemoth which is admirable. The Compass Coffee shop in Arlington (Rosslyn) is just one of about ten locations. What I like about Compass Coffee is the consistency in the friendliness of the employees and the taste of the coffee. I tend to just get a medium or dark roast drip coffee but they have a full menu of espressos, americanos, cold brews, teas and such. They also have some yummy pastries. Although I am not a huge muffin fan I must say that their Choco Banana muffin is excellent! What I like about the Arlington location is that they are just a few steps from the Rosslyn metro station so I can fuel up on my way to meetings. I had to go into the city for a class and Compass Coffee was recommended by a classmate. The next morning, I popped up out of the metro and got here just as they opened. I'm glad I got here early because there was a steady stream of customers after me and the line quickly grew. I ordered a simple Vanilla Latte and it was probably the best I've ever had. Compass Coffee has it's pros and cons. I will start with the Cons. It's unfortunate that they dont have too many hot breakfast items. Also the rewards program is a little complicated. If you want to check your reward status, you either have to be at the shop logged in at the register, or go online to their site via full internet on your phone. There is no company app to make it more convenient. It's hard to read a full internet page on a phone screen. On the flip side. A cozy environment - your classic coffee shop atmosphere with friendly staff. I absolutely love their iced drinks. Generally i'm not one for iced coffees. Hot or cold coffee, I like to sip my drink slowly over time. I dont mind a hot coffee that has gone to room temp. Iced coffee on the other hand, as the ice melts down the coffee waters out and loses its flavor. I've paid $5 + for a watered out coffee. HOWEVER, COMPASS COFFEE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL. I dont know what they put in the cream topping of that cold brew, but something about it keeps the drink nice and creamy for a long time. Even as the ice melts. You might think the drink is watering out, but just give it a little swirl and that cold foam works magic to make the drink nice and creamy again. Its like magic. read more

5 stars on the good days and then 2 stars on the bad. I've been consistently coming here since their soft opening and I haven't stepped foot into the "other" coffee shop across the street so I'm pretty loyal to them. On a good day, there are no lines. I walk up to the friendly staff and my drink is made perfectly. Then I'm out the door in 5 mins. However, on a bad day, the line is wrapped around the entire space. They run out of matcha or get my order wrong, my drink takes forever, or they run out of cups/lids/straws. So given that the cons outweigh the pros, I'm averaging it out to a 3 star rating which I think is fair. Hopefully they work out the kinks, from properly stocking their inventory to getting my "large matcha almond milk latte with 50% syrup extra hot, Karen with a K" right every time. I do like the space here since there are ample seating upstairs to study/work. Service is always very friendly and they have an assembly line down to the T for preparing drinks. So really, there are just small adjustments needed for this place to be great. Also, Compass really needs to have an app or some sort of reward system for loyal customers. Just sayin. read more

I'm quite partial to this Compass location that recently opened in Rosslyn. I often find myself looking for a coffee shop to do remote work when I'm in the area, and this one is reliable. The wifi is free and fast, outlets are accessible, and there are plenty of seating options on the main level and upstairs. To be honest, I don't love Compass coffee beans (I think they're over-roasted and kind of bitter), but I've had success with their specialty drinks. Last time I was there, I ordered a delicious iced matcha with almond milk. It was lightly sweetened, and blended well. I wasn't left with any powdery matcha sludge, as is often the case when I order it. The line is insane - like, stretching out the door insane - as commuters arrive to pick up their morning coffee, so be patient if you arrive around then. Always my favorite afternoon break to take when I've had a long day at work. All the staff are super cheery and personable and helpful. They rotate their menu seasonally and my new favorite to get from them is the nitro chai which has amazing chai spices and is so well made. It's so easy to water down chai but they get it just right. Good espresso-based drinks, friendly service, great interior. Compass is a welcome addition to Rosslyn, which generally lacks good coffee shops. I've been here a number of times, and would say the espresso-based drinks are the best bet here. If you like it strong, the cortado, with just a touch of milk and foam, is a good choice. Cappucinos and lattes are also good, and come with nice, thick caps of properly microfoamed milk. The drip coffee I like less - more like 3 stars for that. I've tried each of their roasts, and have found them decent, but somewhat lacking in depth and complexity when compared to the best drip elsewhere. Service - from a range of different people over various visits - has consistently been friendly and efficient. Finally, the cafe's interior is open and welcoming, definitely part of the appeal. The space is lofted and modern, with large, 2-story windows that let in lots of light. There's plenty of seating, some of it comfy enough to invite you to stay awhile, and different seating configurations that accommodate groups from one to many. read more

This is a minor annoyance - the cup is not sturdy. Coffee leaked a bit from the lid as you drink. There isn't a sleeve, so it can be a little warm holding it. Always great coffee and service from Compass. We've gotten their cans of coffee to brew at home and then you can bring them back and refill them for a discount. Two minor things that I wish they would change is that I wasn't able to tip the staff (I asked if they had a tip jar and they said they can't take tips). Secondly, are the straws. I've gone twice now, and it's been a little underwhelming. First visit I asked about the differences between the coffees with the hopes of perhaps getting some taste descriptions or the very least the origin (Ethiopia, Costa Rican, Alabama???). Nope, I got "the differences is basically different amount of caffeine. Light-low, dark-high"...yeah, not really what I was hoping for when deciding on a coffee to drink. Today, got a large coffee...medium roast. There may have been a sign telling me more about it than last time, but whatever...I've given up on that when coming here. One suggestion, get different coffee cups or tops. The ones you've got are horrible. First, you have to randomly decide which is going to fit your cup when you go to find one. Unless they just randomly had giant tops for some reason? Then, as I walked with my coffee back home...it just kept dripping out the top. Not the sippin'-hole, but just between the top and cup. Literally, 1/5th of my coffee dripped down my arm in two blocks of walking. If you're going to have "custom" cups...get some tops that work with them and don't leak. Positive, I like the dog leash holder by the front door. Also, better than Starbucks I'll try it one more time before giving up, but the cup thing really seems to annoy me. read more

Since it's opening, I've been to Compass Coffee several times with each time being equally satisfied. I'd never had their coffee until they opened right underneath my office. The staff are wonderful at this location! They're pleasant, personable, have already started to remember guests, and still deliver quick service. Since the opening weeks, I've ordered the iced vanilla latte! It's consistently good, despite who makes it. I've seen staff offer for guests to taste test, which is good to know as I may explore other options. I've yet to stay and enjoy my coffee inside, but plenty of seating with a very open feel. I was so hopeful for this place to be my frequent coffee house. The atmosphere is open and clean with a nice vibe. I enjoyed the friendly staff and the cool interior layout which is the only reason I gave it two stars. But I'm looking for a good cup of coffee, not a hip place to hang out. I was utterly disappointed with the over roasted espresso, I actually couldn't even finish my cappuccino, it tasted horrible. It takes a lot for me to throw out a cup of coffee.
