I scheduled an initial exam for my dog and was able to get scheduled the next couple of days (My original vet clinic shut down in LO and moved to a different town). I had to put down a $90 deposit, which I was fine with but seemed excessive. Long story short, I had forgotten about the appointment since I did not receive any confirmation via email or text and the office didn't call to check in if I was running behind (it would have been a 1 min drive to get to the clinic). Instead, they call me 15 mins after my scheduled appointment and informed me that because I was a "no show" I would have to forfeit the $90 deposit. I know it's ultimately my fault for forgetting about the appointment, but not getting any form of appointment confirmation seems unprofessional. Many of us have busy schedules or have things going on in our personal lives that could contribute to being a "no show". Wondering if this is just how they run their business or if this is a one off situation - but overall would say their lack of ease with a potential new client, lack of appt confirmation/ follow up speaks volumes on the type of service they provide. UPDATE: While reporting Dr. Sheets to the Oregon Veterinary Board, I discovered she's currently listed with them as an INTERN, NOT a doctor, tho she practiced completely unsupervised which contributed to my dog's death. -- This review is for Dr. Sheets, and Compass for allowing an unqualified doctor to practice on her own. My dog died partly because Dr. Sheets is so inexperienced and unqualified to practice on her own, that she could not tell the difference between symptoms of a respiratory issue and of a gastrointestinal issue, even when I was literally telling her that there was a respiratory issue that needed urgent treatment. 3 days after seeing Dr. Sheets at Compass, my dog died of pneumonia, which I pointed out to Dr. Sheets, but she repeatedly dismissed my suggestion and the symptoms I clearly pointed out. Dr. Sheets told me that what I was pointing out were symptoms of my dog's Pancreatitis. The day after seeing Dr. Sheets, I spoke to an experienced vet on JustAnswer, who said the symptoms I was describing could not possibly be from a gastrointestinal issue like Pancreatitis, and that my dog had a respiratory infection as I suspected. The day after that, she was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia and died the day after with. She was dancing and full of life just days earlier. Not only did Dr. Sheets never call me back when I called the day after our appointment about my dog not eating the prescribed food for her Pancreatitis, Compass never apologized or refunded me after finding out she died of the illness I told the doctor that she had. This is not a veterinary practice that takes your animal's well being seriously or holds themselves responsible for their vet's actions. Dr. Sheets clearly needs more training and to confer with more experienced doctors. The other senior doctors here have great reviews (Connolly and Porter) which I wish I had seen before making an appointment. So if an animal you love is sick, I'd recommend seeing Connolly or Porter or finding out if they can at least give a second opinion during your visit. Full Story --- I brought my dog in on a Wednesday. She had thrown up, but also she clearly had respiratory issues, which I pointed out. She was choking on her mucus constantly (present at the exam), heavy breathing at night, sneezing and coughing (present at the exam.) I pointed out it seemed like she had something stuck she was trying to get out. Blood tests showed my dog had pancreatitis (hence the throwing up) but it was clear to me she also had a respiratory infection like bronchitis or pneumonia. When I firmly pointed out these symptoms, and my concern for a secondary infection, Dr. Sheets dismissed my concerns with - "no no that's not that, that mucus is from her pancreatitis." When I pointed out what a stark difference there was in her energy in one day she said "oh if you had pancreatitis you'd feel awful too." A qualified vet would have said: "oh you're right, it looks like she may also have a respiratory issue, that could be very dangerous. If we do an X ray we will find out." Instead, she repeatedly dismissed my observations and suggestion of a respiratory infection, and in the end her blanket answer for my clear concern was to say: "Well, if you're still worried you can get more tests" as a shot in the dark, hoping to find the cause. I was literally telling her the cause. The next day I spoke to a vet online (with 50 years experience, via JustAnswer) and he confirmed my dog's mucus and coughing could NOT be from her gastrointestinal issue of pancreatitis, it was respiratory. Those are two different systems. I took my dog into an emergency vet that friday where she was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, both by sight then confirmed by x rays. She died three days after seeing Dr. Sheets. It seems Dr. Sheets relies entirely on reading the results of expensive tests to tell you what's wrong, instead of what a qualified doctor does: looking at the patient, noticing their symptoms, and diagnosing what could be wrong then confirming with the appropriate tests. And in this case, I was literally telling her my dog had a respiratory infection, which she did. But in addition to her lack of expertise, there is a real lack of care, as she really does not listen at all. What someone can notice by living with an animal is a wealth of information over what any doctor can see in a quick exam, especially if they aren't really paying attention as was the case with Dr. Sheets. If your animal is sick, do NOT see Dr. Sheets. I would highly recommend she get more training or apprentice for a more experienced and caring doctor who takes this job seriously before being allowed to see sick patients. Or change careers. An animal is a living feeling being who is someone's family member, their health is not to be taken lightly as Dr. Sheets handled this. I expect a full refund for what was in no shape or form an exam by a qualified doctor. read more

I took my 5.0lb Shihpoo to compass vet in lake Oswego which is two minutes from my house to do an Anal gland expression that i was doing that every four month or so! They used to charge me $20.00 for doing a five minutes job which i was okay with that. I went there again two weeks ago for the same thing and this time they charge me $38.00 which i thought that was outrages!! Last Saturday my poppy had her annual exam and while i was there i told them they just did the Anal gland Expression week ago and it was not done right and they said they will take care of that while she is there! To my surprise they had the audacity to charge me $50.00 again!! i asked them to refund me since i just paid $38.00 for same thing and they refused to do so!! I believe this place since they are located in lake Oswego they think can take advantage of people because we love our pet! I am SO THANKFUL I discovered Compass Vet Clinic when I got my first puppy. I made sure to research and call every veterinary clinic in the Portland area. When I called Compass Vet, I spoke with Penny, who works as a client care specialist. Penny is the whole reason I decided to go to Dr. Connolly. Penny was so knowledgeable talked me through the entire vaccine schedule and neutering procedure for my puppy. From the moment I talked to Penny and met with Dr. Connolly I knew my puppy was in great hands. I also greatly appreciate how much Dr. Connolly cares about the health and wellness of the animals she works with. Last year when we had the horrible snow storm I had an appointment with Dr. Connolly. Although she had to cancel she made sure to call me personally and instruct me on what to do with puppy. I know that there are many positive reviews here and that is one of the main reasons I decided to bring my sweet, beautiful cat here when we relocated to the area. But what happened to her here is so horrific that I have to share it and just hope that maybe it will save a pet and something positive will have come out of this awful situation. I brought her in for a check up and shots about two months ago. After examining her, Dr. Connelly strongly suggested that she have a dental cleaning; she said that she had a loose tooth and that it could become infected and turn into a life-threatening situation. So I booked the first available dental appointment which was about a month and a half later. I was worried because she was an older cat but they assured me it would be fine as she was very healthy and active and her bloodwork was excellent. She had had a dental cleaning with several extractions a few years prior at her previous vet and had come through just fine, so I assumed it would be a similar situation. I brought her for her dental appointment and they called me afterwards to say that she was coming out of the anesthesia fine. They said that they had been mistaken and there was no loose tooth, which annoyed me because I wondered if she actually needed the procedure, but I just felt relief that she had come through it okay. I picked her up and she seemed very out of it but they told me she might be lethargic and might not eat for a while after. I assumed she was just recovering, but the next day she was eating very little and throwing up. The next day, Sunday, she threw up multiple times and started to seem as if she was having trouble breathing. So I called first thing on Monday morning and brought her in. The front desk staff and vet tech all seemed strange when I brought her in, they were very unfriendly and cold. It seemed odd but the doctor did an x-ray and reassured me that she just had really bad gas. The doctor assured me that it was nothing serious and gave me some anti-nausea medicine and an appetite stimulant and sent us home. However, my poor baby just seemed to worsen. She really seemed to have trouble breathing and was making crazy coughing noises and still vomiting. I called back and they told me to take her to Dove Lewis right away. The receptionist said that she would send her records right then so they would have them. When I got to Dove Lewis, they admitted her and told me that they strongly suggested that she be hospitalized. However, they said that Compass had not sent her records, they never received them, so they had to do additional x-rays and did not have a full picture of what was happening. After a couple of days in the hospital with still no answers, Dr. Connelly called me. She said that as soon as they knew what had caused the problem, they would "change our protocols to ensure that this never happened to another pet again." But what about what you did to my pet? After five days in the hospital, Dove Lewis doctors were still not able to figure out how to treat her and she was worsening and unable to breathe. The doctors said that she was in incredible pain and suffering and suggested that she be euthanized. I had to make the incredibly heartwrenching decision to put my sweet baby to sleep, a cat who had been perfectly healthy and happy only a week earlier when I brought her for her dental work. Her bloodwork was still perfect and there was no indication of any condition that would have caused this. Dove Lewis said that they would tell Compass that she had passed away, but one of the worst things about this entire thing is that I have never received a phone call or note from Dr. Connelly or anyone there to express their condolences. I am absolutely devastated at the loss of my precious girl, who was so full of life and personality. She was truly the light of my life and I will never be able to replace her. This vet may have been great in the past but clearly no longer. Not to mention, they seem to have little caring for pets or people; their behavior was heartless. I would urge you not to take your animals there; if this story can save a pet from a similar situation, at least something positive will come out of this. Update after their response: I think the fact that they did not even follow up to find out what had happened to her, their patient, when they knew she was sick and hospitalized at Dove Lewis after a procedure at their clinic, speaks volumes in terms of their caring and empathy. I didn't think this could be any more heartbreaking, but knowing that pretty much pushes it over the edge. read more

Very strange experience. I scheduled an online appt with the highest rated/most mentioned doctor. Showed up at the accepted time (after receiving several confirmation texts and emails), to be told that not only have they switched doctors BUT also booked over my appt. offering me random other times. No apology, no acknowledgement of error. My advice would be that if you're unable to manage an online scheduling system maybe discontinue using it. Very frustrating and stressful for the dog. read more

As professional as the vet was, some of the other staff did not seem very knowledgeable or helpful. We asked if they could show us how to clip our dog's nails and ended up getting charged $25 for less than 5 minutes of nail clipping. When we expressed our surprise and disappointment at the unfair charge for this, they did not offer to waive the fee or help in any way. This was our first time there and we were disappointed that the staff clearly did not value or care about us as a new client. Well...I would give a higher rating but they wanted to charge my card for $100 dollars before holding my appointment. Why do this if we don't even know what the final charge will be?? It took 3 vet clinics to find this wonderful place. They are working on getting the entire staff certified as "Fear-free". It's a great atmosphere and Dr Connolly is very professional. Overall, I've had a really positive experience with this vet clinic and Dr. Connolly in particular. My pup is pretty fearful and hates going to the vet, and he has been treated with patience and understanding. He can get snippy when he's feeling threatened and I have never felt judged by them, but rather treated with compassion and told that I'm doing a great job caring for him. Considering how stressed I am about his behavior and how much time I've put into trying to train him, it's a relief to be acknowledged for that work and not treated like a failed pet parent. It's great for him too because the vet understands that he's gone through so much in his short life that it's amazing he's not worse than he is. My other favorite thing is that I can email the vet directly and she always responds, often within a day. This really saves us from unnecessary stress for my dog, because I don't need to come in to ask a quick question about heartworm meds or whatever else. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because while Dr Connolly is clearly trained in Fear Free methods, I'm not sure the rest of the staff are. We recently had an interaction with a new (to us) vet tech and it was not a great experience. My pup needed a vaccine and she came in and didn't even acknowledge my dog. He was wagging his tail and wanting to say hi but instead of greeting him and letting him get a sniff in, she immediately started preparing the needle. At that point, he backed up into a corner and got scared. She only got close to him when she needed to put the shot in, and even at that point, she didn't say hi to him. I think this made the whole situation more stressful for him because it could've been more positive had she taken a minute or two to get one his level, let him sniff her, etc. I think some training for staff on how to be fear free would really help! read more

I would have never taken my dog here if it weren't for them accepting the humane society coupon to be spayed. Now, getting surgery with a coupon seems very odd to me, but alas, it was a good deal. I have a regular vet, I like them, they are 5 minutes from my house. If compass wasn't 45 minutes away, I would consider a switch. I made several calls about getting my pup spayed, Compass was definitely the nicest on the phone. I made an appointment and offered to get the records from my other vet to them. They said don't worry about it, and they did it for me. They never made me feel bad for coming in on a discount spay. They did the normal stuff, and tried to up-sell me on a few things, they are a business, and i don't mind in the least. They noted that she would be due for some of her shots the following month and some more in a few months, so we went ahead and did the vaccinations at the same time. From Start to finish everybody was very nice, the surgery scar looks great and my dog is happy and healthy. Take your pet here. read more

I've been going to Compass almost 2 years with my new Havanese pup. Everyone is nice and caring and they are mostly efficient with appointment times. However it's not perfect. My little buddy has had weepy eyes ever since I got him and I was told that was common. A year and a half later little dude got poked in the eye and I got some antibiotic ointment. Guess what, weepy eyes totally went away. More recently my pupper had mild GI distress off and on and I had a parasite and infection that was treated that I was afraid I had passed to the dog. The vet said unless the dog had more severe symptoms they wouldn't test or treat. I insisted on the test (it was positive for the infection). He refused to give me antibiotics until I went home to read some research that I agreed to look at. I did, and I still wanted the antibiotics a week later so I called. I was told to come in the following morning. The doctor insisted on taking me into an exam room to repeat everything we had already discussed before he would prescribe the antibiotics. And then I was charged for another exam fee. I protested to no avail. My pup got better (perfect bm's and more playful energy!) and I have no regrets. But I was double dinged on exams to get the antibiotics for a legit infection. Boo. read more

Dr. Connolly is so good with my kitties that we followed her across town when she opened Compass. She makes sure they're comfortable, gets down to their level (they are rarely on the standard examining table, as they tend to be more comfortable on the floor or her lap), and coos at and snuggles them as if they're her own. We had a great experience with Compass Vet. Our dog hadn't been to the vet in a couple years and needed to be spayed. We found Compass through the Oregon Spay/Neuter Fund and they honored our voucher for a discounted spay. Esmeralda was helpful and courteous when we scheduled our exam and they offered us an appointment right away. Dr. Connolly was kind and thorough in explaining all of the prices and made recommendations for services. She wasn't pushy when we declined wanting some of the services. They took great care of our dog and called us with an update as soon as she woke up from surgery. I went here for the first time in early spring when my cat, Ivy, swallowed a foreign body. After my visit with Dr. Connolly I will never go to another vet. Once I found out what was wrong with Ivy, I grew very worried and assumed the worst. Dr. Connolly's calm demeanor and incredible veterinary knowledge made me feel optimistic that Ivy would be okay, and she is! She's sitting next to me right now. Then, a few weeks ago my other cat, Blitz, developed a severe intestinal infection. Again, I was blown away by how amazing this clinic is. When I'm here I feel like they genuinely care for the well being of my animals. Everyone here from the ladies at the front desk to the doctors are so kind, professional, and compassionate. Dr. Connolly is so knowledgeable and gentle with my animals, she is the best vet I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
