Thank you, Kara! I can't say enough good things about the help this veterinarian gave me on Saturday. I was visiting my parents in Portland and they just cleaned out the garage and somehow an old D-con pack still wrapped in plastic had ended up in the middle of the yard in front of the barn. My Husky was eating some things off the ground and I caught the second thing she had in her mouth which was the d-CON pack. Not knowing what the first thing was she ate, we had to take some action. Kara talked me through the whole thing and we clarified that she had not eaten a d-con pack by inducing vomiting. I was so grateful to have Kara's help. What a wonderful Veterinary practice! Thank you for your help and compassion over the phone and via text. "Compassion" should not be listed in the name. After spending a lot of time thinking on making the hardest decision ever, I scheduled an appointment for my 13 year old elderly cat due to the proximity of the office to my home and not wanting to cause him stress in his old age. Upon calling to schedule and telling them that I was thinking it was time to let him go, the receptionist told me they would schedule a "quality of life" appointment and we could go from there. As soon as we got put into a room for our appointment I felt that something was off. My kitty had a history of Feline Herpes that is unfortunately an illness that comes back again and again - The "nurse" immediately also mentioned she "thought" he had a thyroid issue, and I could hear her talking outside the door to the vet telling her what she thought the issue was, which made me extremely uncomfortable. The only thing they did was listen to his heart, breathing, and weigh him. They suggested Antibiotics and to run hundreds of dollars of blood work - all with no guarantee that he would get better or that a solution would be met. I felt extremely judged throughout this entire process and did not feel a lick of compassion from what should have been a professional, caring individual. After telling the vet that we are unfortunately making the hard decision to euthanize, we were told that she would send a nurse in with paperwork for us. After she left the room, the nurse came back in, no paperwork in hand, and informed us that she essentially had to "be the bearer of bad news" in telling us that they do not offer "euthanasia of convenience" because they had "offered us solutions" and that they only do emergency euthanasia. We were then told that if we were to follow through with euthanasia, we would have to go to MSU because they - and I quote - "will basically put anything down, no questions asked". Let me just start by saying that this is in no way true, as I have had many wonderful experiences with MSU emergency in the past and have been treated with nothing but understanding and kindness with every visit there. If these people truly believe that euthanizing a family member after 13 years is "convenient"decision, they are poorly mistaken and I am absolutely heartbroken and disgusted by our visit there. In the midst of one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, I was met with judgement, felt that I was not taken seriously, and turned away due to the fact I did not want to put my animal through more just to make myself feel better. I have had this cat for 13 years and know better than anyone that he was not well, and was ready to stop fighting. I had to make the decision that was right for HIM, not a decision that made these people feel better about attempting to "save" a cat that was clearly ready to go. Just because a cat "could" live to 20, does not always mean that they SHOULD. It is our responsibility as owners and care takers to make the best decision for our babies. I will absolutely never return to this establishment, nor would I ever recommend this establishment to any of my friends or family. I am still angry and heartbroken. I have never received this treatment from a vet in my entire life. I highly encourage the owners of this establishment to update their website to state these claims that were made to us, as I was completely blindsided by everything that happened here. If your furry friend is having a medical emergency or needs care, please consider finding another clinic or making the drive to MSU - I promise you will be met with 10x more compassion than was given to us on this dreadful day. I want to thank Dr. Mary and the staff at Compassion 4 Paws. We set out on a road trip with our four babies from California to Michigan to visit an ailing family member. It started out not so great as our 13 yo had been in decline for a while. By the time we got to Vegas, she couldn't continue so we had to do one of the hardest things pet owners do, and that's to give your pets relief from their pain. We used Yelp to find a vet near where we were (separate post on this) and they helped Apple the Dapple transition. While in MI, our 18yo, Chipotle, who'd also been in decline had to transition as well and we were referred to Compassion 4 Paws. It's a quaint place, but what it lacks in luxury it makes up in compassion and that's what our little boy needed. They were very caring and handled things in a very delicate way and we were so appreciative. Our little boy had a rough start to life. The vet we adopted him from said he was a bait dog used to train other dogs to fight, given the injuries and nerve damage she observed during his surgery when just a little baby. We tried to give him a good life along with our menagerie of pets. I'm glad we had him for so long and found Dr. Mary and her team to help him transition with the care and dignity he deserved. Our cat was very sick. We brought him in for evaluation and were treated with kindness and respect from the receptionist. The vet tech came and got us and took us back to the room. She was a lot. She didn't introduce herself or check that the medical records from our primary vet had been obtained, which the receptionist already did. She started in with a deep dive into all the things that could potentially be wrong with him. We thought she was the doctor because of all the things she was saying. Then Dr. Mary came in. Dr. Mary is the epitome of compassion and caring. She was phenomenal to work with. No speculations, no rabbit holes of what it could be. She listened to the history of his symptoms, then she began her physical exam. Based on exam she gave us options as to how to proceed, either with xray or ultrasound being the recommended options. The news we got from his imaging wasn't what we were expecting at all. Dr. Mary took her time to explain what was going on and what treatment options were. She presented all of the options, and when I asked clarifying questions she was straightforward with the answers but still incredibly kind and caring. We made the decision to euthanize our animal. As we were trying to decide on which urn to get and have personal time, the vet tech, who was not present for any of the discussions with the doctor, came in saying we should take him home and get a second opinion and feed him food that stimulates his appetite, and was just intrusive and pushy as all get out. The doctor had already told us that it was not a good prognosis and that specialty would not likely have a different outcome. When the tech was in the room we were very uncomfortable because everything she said was at odds with what the doctor said. She made us feel like we were making the wrong decision. So we asked to talk to the doctor again. Dr. Mary came back and told us that the food the vet tech recommended was going to directly cause harm to our cat's already failing kidneys, and that while it would get calories in him, it was not a viable solution. I trust Dr. Mary and value how amazing she was with us and our cat. The receptionist was respectful, courteous, and kind. The vet tech is a huge red flag for us. If you want to be pressured and made to feel like you can't do what's best for your animal, she's the one to talk to. read more
