I visit family from time to time in the area and they really like Conch Cafe. For me, it has always been so-so but with a nice view of the beach but unremarkable food. Basically...forgettable. However my last trip in June 2015 was regrettably not forgettable. I ordered a fish sandwich with mahi. Bottom line, the fish was so dry, mealy, and tasteless that it was completely indistinguishable from the bread it was served on. My brother had the same thing and after a few bites we simply looked at each other in disbelief that anyone could serve that. The others in the party seemed to have no complaints, but no compliments either. I think yelp's "meh" rating is dead on. read more

My family and I dined there during a recent vacation to Surfside Beach. The location is great for those staying at Oceanside Village or surrounding areas. It is a classic beachside restaurant where several diners show up in swim wear and some sand sticking to their bodies. The waitstaff is friendly and the view is wonderful from their outside dining area. The food was very good, perhaps not the best on our trip but the fact that we could stroll in from the beach makes this worth the five star rating. I wouldn't hesitate to come here again. This is one of our favorite spots. The atmosphere is very laid back and you can't beat the oceanfront view. My favorite is their fries. They are battered and crispy. Their daiquiris are great too! Also, the Seafood is always good. We often get the seafood platters. The service is friendly as well. When we went today, the air conditioner could have been a lot cooler and stronger. The staff and customers were getting a little uncomfortable due to the temperature. We'll come back, as we always do but we hope the AC is better when we do. read more

I've always had a good experience at the conch cafe. This time I went and told them that I had a party of 12. The waitress told us it would be a wait even though there was nobody in the restaurant being only 4 something in the afternoon. So we stood there for a few minutes as the two hostesses did absolutely nothing. They didn't try to push tables together or anything. They just stood there talking. Eventually they asked us to sit outside and wait. All they had to do was push two tables together and bam it would've been fine but no they didn't. It was about a 15 minute wait after that. Our server was great! Very nice young man. Only took 15 minutes to get our food. Food was amazing. One thing I did notice was that the waitresses didn't seem dressed well for a sit down restaurant. The hostess had leggings with draw strings and another waitress had an exposed bra and most of the waitresses had very short shorts. It just didn't seem very professional for a sit down restaurant. Came back the following night, as the rest of the family arrived. We put out name in and our number. The wait was 1 hour+. We were called in 30 minutes and we walked across the street. We sat on the deck and it was a very hot evening. Waitress was very pleasant. We had 11 in our party including kids, a toddler, and adults. Took 20 minutes for the food and when it arrived only one set of French fries were cold. The server replaced them with an entire basket at no charge. Our waters were filled with water and ice fairly consistently. Considering the big party, it was a very good experience. I had the po boy this time and it was really good. Too bad they close at 9 during the week, would be a great place to get drinks late night. read more

We eat here every time we come to the beach. Outdoor or indoor seating, and as casual or fancy as you want it to be. It's child friendly, and the breeze helps with the heat during the summer months. The place has impeccable location and a nice looking restaurant but after you get over that, it's nothing special, and I would venture to say it's less than special. 2 beers on tap when we went, Yuengling and Blue Moon. The rest in bottles. I guess I'm a complainer but it's 2016, if you have 2 beers on tap, and neither of them are regular domestic or craft, I guess I don't know who you're trying to please. I mean I guess I'm expected either Bud Light or a local South Carolina beer on tap. Call me crazy. Now the food doesn't really offer anything special either. Most of the stuff is standard. Everything you order has a taste like you bought it at the store and unfroze it. My soup tasted almost gritty. It was good soup, the flavor was right, but the texture didn't taste fresh. A lot of the dinner stuff seems to miss the mark in general. It's close but no cigar. It's food, I give it that much. I see the idea is to drink on the beach for some people. Maybe they should work on that atmosphere a little more. I personally don't find the atmosphere conducive to beach drinking, and I don't find the food good enough to make it worthwhile either. Place is just very blah. Probably needs some energy put towards what they're trying to accomplish. read more

Who could complain about eating decent seafood and drinking a beer on a deck overlooking the ocean? The food is pretty good, not outstanding. Everything is fried. I think I remember though, that if you ask, you can get it blackened or broiled. The food is calabash style, the little tiny scallops and shrimp. But I would recommend the flounder and the oysters. Service is good. I just wish they stayed open year round and that they served breakfast and lunch. Why waste that nice deck and view during the day? With Nibbles gone, we need a good breakfast on the beach place in Surfside. Come on Conch! read more
