Jeff, First, I'd like to tell you that you and your entire team at Confidence Landscaping did a fantastic job from beginning through the end of our job. The planning, preparation, installation and followup from you and your crew exceeded our expectations. Planning: You were very patient with us as you helped us fully articulate what we really wanted for our backyard and driveway renovation. Jeff, your questions and coaching were tremendously helpful and your expertise and experience were exactly what we needed to design our forever entertainment backyard. Our friends and other guests that have experienced our yard have all been in awe of the architecture of the new deck, overhead structure (for my beloved smoker and BBQ!), and the large granite bar eating space. The attention to detail for our landscape and deck lighting is also frequently praised by our friends for the plant diversity, colors and textures. Preparation: I really believe your company's philosophy of maintaining your own crew of workers (employees by you full-time) is what really made the difference with how our job was executed. The crew always showed up on-time and as scheduled to demolish, grade and get their work done. After each work day they meticulously cleaned up the area and swept the concrete areas to minimize dust. When I was working from home, you could tell the team all really enjoyed working together (laughing, talking, joking around) and their efforts were all aligned in making sure we were satisfied with the job. Installation: Your plan and the coordination between the different areas was well executed. We really appreciate your involvement when we encountered the front of our garage to the driveway grading issue. You provided us with options and the pros and cons that made our decision making very straightforward. The stone work, the deck, bar counter and overhead redwood bar structure came together just as described in our plans. The construction materials you recommended are the highest quality and workmanship and attention to detail can't be understated. Again, everyone coming into our yard now marvels at these items and comment that the design of all the elements fit so well together. Followup: We again really appreciate how you would stop by to check on our project's progress and your foreperson was always keeping us updated on what was coming up and their timelines. Having this level of interaction and communication between your team and us reduced our anxiety of the overall project. Even after our job was done, we appreciate that you and your team, unprompted, came by to check in with us on how things were working out. Sorry this is such a long message, but we just wanted to express our thanks to you and your team for how 'home improvement projects should go'. Unfortunately, I'll speculate that we've all had some problems were a supplier over promises and under delivers. Jeff Sheehan, the owner of Confidence Landscaping, just left after a consult visit, and I feel obligated to report on my experience. I hope that it will be helpful for others trying to decide whether to work with Jeff. I decidedly HAVE NOT, and have no intention of EVER hiring Jeff based on my experience. What a condescending and disrespectful jerk. If you don't have a big project, look elsewhere. Even if you do, beware of this guy's character. We have a small yard that we want to redo for some basic functions: lounging, dining, play, and a small garden. Nothing out of a magazine spread, so to speak, but attractive and functional. They say some landscape designers, architects, and contractors only like to take on big jobs. I'm guessing this company is one of them. Jeff was rude, bordering on insulting, the entire time. Before even setting foot in our yard, he refused to move his giant truck from where it was parked a red zone, refused to come to the front door of the house, and generally let it be known that he did not care about our project. It seems he doesn't care about treating potential clients with basic courtesy either. I was trying to be friendly, and not let him get to me (I mean, some people come off as jerks without intending to, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt). As I tried to explain our vision, he acted visibly bored. Not once did he offer up any ideas or suggestions as several other professionals we are considering have done. When Jeff asked about our budget (which I clearly stated on the phone to him previously), he said it is only possible for them to do what we want with 3x or 4x our budget. Obviously, this surprised me since he knew our budget coming in and other professionals seemed confident in coming in within range. Others offer options and trade-offs to still achieve what you want. Not Confidence landscaping in this case. He basically said we have an impasse, which reflected poorly to me the company's ability to be flexible and problem-solve effectively. My tolerance for his disrespect eventually wore out. I told Jeff he could have his business card back and showed him the exit. I'm surprised Jeff has been "in business for 30 years" with his lack of professionalism. I wish I had seen the very recent review from Brian K. on 7/7/2013 before contacting him. Looks like I'm not the only one who has experienced this side of Jeff. Perhaps I'm feeling his bitterness after losing that lawsuit. I hope you never have to. read more

Overpriced, with super lazy and slow workers. Used them on my back yard landscaping and irrigation in 2007 and the invoice was more than 10% higher than the contracted estimate, plus I'm having to replace all irrigation valves now because they didn't (just used the 30yo ones that were there?). It was much less work and less quality in materials than we contracted for, Confidence was greatly off schedule and greatly off budget. The final touch was coming to me in the final day's and saying they forgot to charge 7k for concrete, and it would cost $700 to make the flowerpot drips they installed be operable! This was a very bad experience and hard lesson in trust. Over 50k was spent on a backyard and the support and follow through were shameful...Jeff says or does whatever he needs to to make more money...it's not about integrity. I just read that they're not insured or bonded, and that's downright scary. read more

I've had Jeff and his team manage my yard work for the past 14 years. Jeff and his son are landscape designers not just mow & blows. He's brought in excellent subcontractors to help with some of the tasks and has allowed me to develop my garden as finances allow. He's also introduced me to some really good tree surgeons, but when I just needed a squirrels nest removed (empty), his guys did it for me on the normal route. I like that they bring their own port-a-potty to construction sites, not leaving it out front to get tipped like some contractors do. Why not 5 stars you say? I know Confidence is a bit on the expensive side... compared to my neighbors I know I'm not going cheap, but Jeff and his team are very good!!! It's a balance between cost, quality, and time. My time and quality requirements do make things cost more. read more

Jeff Sheehan and his team turned our bland, weed filled front yard into a lovely lawn-free relaxing space for us and our dogs. After calling many landscape companies, I soon realized my vision and budget were totally unrealistic. Jeff essentially agreed with the others, but patiently explained different options to help lower the cost, and at my urging, he designed a space far different than what I thought I wanted. Jeff's design is both visually pleasing and practical for our application. Seems the negative reviews about Confidence Landscape involve personality differences with Jeff, while first impressions are very important, I wasn't put off by his straight forward, no nonsense manner. Jeff definitely came through on all agreed work, moreover, he even revised his own design by adding flagstone steps, when he wasn't satisfied he had them done a second time, all at no additional expense to us. The name says it all!!!! Confidence Landscaping is the bomb! As a real estate agent, I work with a lot of vendors. Not all call you back, come to appt. on time, or leave you feeling that you can trust their evaluation of the project.. That was not my experience with Jeff. He was personable and knowledgeable and offered great advice. I felt confident with the tips and advice he gave me and will definitely use him again. Best money I ever spent. Of all the home improvement projects we've undertaken, this has been the most rewarding. The design is beautiful and the work performed is high quality and reliable. Jeff and his team (Eric, Daniel, Raphael, Mark, Dwaine, and many others...) re-landscaped our front and back yards in 2010, and we absolutely love the outcome. ----------------------- Pluses + we asked for a more natural look. Jeff brought in many creative ideas (shape of deck, lawn, pathways, dry creeks, rock walls) that greatly improved our previous design and captured that natural feel we wanted. We were wowed several times as we see our yards take shape. + Jeff is quite meticulous with workmanship. e.g., he redesign and got the crew to tear down and rebuild the front yard's rock retaining wall several times until it looks right.... all on his own. Similar things happened in a couple other places. + The deck subcontractor (Mark from M&M Builders) that Jeff uses is also quite amazing. Not only is the deck (the finish, the bench, the railing) so beautiful, they also are very careful about things we don't see... e.g, The deck's support frame is definitely much stronger than the main house (my wife and I joked about the deck will probably be the only thing left standing after an 8+ earthquake), and they coated/finished all 6 sides of the wood planks to protect them from the elements. + After completion, support work from both Eric and Jeff are quite good. They are also responsive to questions / problems / issues that arise. e.g., Jeff / Eric came out several times on his own to check on which plants survived their first winter. Also, after yesterday's big storm, Jeff came out to check on the drainage. + Because Jeff/Eric being meticulous, I didn't lose sleep during the landscaping process. (In comparison, during home remodeling a year prior, I lost sleep and hairs worrying. e.g., flooding the crawl space area _twice_, sigh). + Our job came ~3% below final contract value. I was pleasantly surprised to get the money back. ----------------------- A couple things to be aware of: * While the paperworks (design/bills..etc.) are very detailed and clear, I often felt rushed and perhaps things happened somewhat disorganized. e.g, sometimes I would get a bill on Monday/Tuesday, and due Friday the same week. * The paver company did a good job with driveway / pathway in terms of look and workmanship. However, as our lot is on a slope, the sloping of finished driveway turned out to be slightly too steep. As a result, if I don't back out the driveway very carefully, my car's tail pipe would slightly scratch the pavement as the back wheels landed on the road. It looks like an extra 0.5" to allow a little bounce would have been perfect. A smaller car or a car with higher suspension (e.g, an SUV or mini-van) would have been fine. ----------------------- Overall, we would gladly use Jeff's company again without reservation. While Jeff's overall bid might be higher than others, the result/quality well justifies the cost, and peace of mind is priceless. read more

We sued Jeff Sheehan, owner of Confidence Landscaping in Campbell, CA, on 3.22.10, in Santa Clara County Superior Court, Small Claims Division, for breach-of-contract relating to a home landscaping job we hired him for in the summer of 2008. The Small Claims Case Number is 7-10-SC-038077. The judge found that Sheehan had both charged us for work he never did, and performed work that did not satisfy the requirements of the Contract to which we agreed and paid. The judgment against Sheehan was $2213.65 (including court costs and interest paid to us). Sheehan did not try to appeal the ruling. If you think, as I was raised to, that a man's character really reveals itself at a time of adversity, consider this. In the courtroom, when it became pretty apparent to all of us that the judge was going to decide against him, Sheehan leaned forward and said, "Look Your Honor, I can fill this courtroom with satisfied customers." The judge responded, "Yes, Mr. Sheehan, but Mr. K. is here today, and he's NOT satisfied." Sheehan promptly turned his back on the judge to face the rear of the courtroom, and threw up his hands like he'd just been personally insulted. This was the kind of dismissive behavior I had already experienced with him, but I was still surprised at his gesturing, as the only person sitting there behind us was Sheehan's college-aged son. As the father to my own 4-year-old son, I get that the example I set for him has effects past the moment -- and that a man shows restraint, if for no other reason than knowing his son is watching him. read more

Mr Sheehan came for an initial meeting and we thought it went well. A couple of days later he sent us his notes from the meeting and indicated he would be by the house the next week to take some measurements and work on a budgetary proposal. At that point all communication ceased........i wrote him asking as to the status of the visit and the budget but well over a month has passed and nothing has been received. He must have had second thoughts about our project, but letting us know that would have been nice. read more

After receiving several exorbitant quotes from several landscapers, we conducted a new round of quotes with design-build landscaper like Confidence. After meeting Jeff and his son Max, I knew we'd found a company that could both achieve our vision and work within our budget. We had a simple but unique project in the foothills of Cupertino with a living roof with native grasses, a decomposed granite path alongside the house with woodland plantings and a custom fire pit designed to utilize some of the onsite materials including several large tree trunks. We are thrilled with the outcome and also super pleased with the amount of care and attention that we've received post-completion. Not only were Jeff, Max and their crews super professional, but they also finished the job on-time and on-budget which is an absolute rarity in the construction boom the area is in right now. We used them starting in spring 2010, trying to get rare plant material, and to install a sideyard patio. They came through with the right plants where many others failed to do so, and followed that with a sophisticated patio design and installation.. Then we had a landscape architect do some very ambitious plans for our front garden, that on balance seemed very difficult to accomplish on the ground. Jeff's team rose to the occasion, and over a four-month period -- on time and on budget -- they performed major league work. Among other things, this involved moving 100,000 pounds of very large boulders into place (15 rocks total), and building a bluestone entry with eight steps and a thousand square feet. The last thing we tackled was a very problematic driveway replacement, and their solution was artful, skillful, and on balance remarkable. We have had them back periodically to do minor tuning (e.g. irrigation patterns), and to admire the result. I will say that this team is expensive by comparison to every other bidder, but we came away convinced that for the quality and the degree of difficulty that the work required, there was no other choice. And all the subs were top rate, too: Brian's Welding for fabulous ironwork, Steve of Precision Construction for top-notch woodwork, Tom Ralston Concrete, etc. I actually found Jeff through Laura Grams, my designer. Both of them worked with me very patiently, accommodating my wishes and coming up with wonderful ideas, plant suggestions, hardscape designs, etc. The whole project was delightfully collaborative and great fun. They both went above and beyond many times! The search for the perfect rocks, helping Brian and Steve create the most wonderful gate ever, making sure the tile artist did what I wanted, getting the color of the concrete terrace just right, tweaking shapes and sizes,finding the perfect way to incorporate the parasoleil panels I wanted, figuring out the lighting, etc., etc. The result is my own bit of Eden. read more
