Just went here today for the first time on the recommendation of someone from the Bayview Opera House as a "great Italian deli." I couldn't believe my ears! An Italian deli in my neighborhood and I never knew of it. I loved it. Like our own little mini Lucca deli, well, ok, not quite, but really good and super cheap AND really funny crew behind the counter. Pretty sure it's a dad and two sons. Dad's been here for 56 years according to one of the sons who claimed to be there for 46 years, followed by adding that he was 46. The sandwiches were made on ciabatta bread by Dad one at a time and were huge. They have choice of breads, mustards (they were out of the "poup" today, but that was ok), cheeses and meats. Very classic and only $3.25 for the basic. Worth it for the entertainment alone, but knowing this pace is right there and was so good will bring me back again and again. I been going to this sandwich in my neighboorhood since the late 80's! I love the mom & pop feel to it and for 4-5 bucks you get a huge sandwich. They are old fasion and don't believe in the media hype. People will come if you make sandwiches with LOVE and that's what EXACTL what they do! One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Five reasons for five stars: 1. Sandwich = Amazing. Massive amounts of turkey with an unbelievable mix of pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and mustard. Plus they offer whole wheat rolls. 2. Price - $2.75. Yep. $2.75. Total came to $3.00 when you add in the pickles. 3. Process - One guy takes the order, yells it to the guy two feet away who makes the order. One at a time. 4. History - According to Leah's article, it's been open since the 1920's. 5. Location - Down in the Bayview, a neighborhood that needs love. Hop on the T and check this place out. Been going to this Lil store forever!!! The sandwiches are what attracted me at first. I use to take my little sister to school in the morning and it was in route. I just recently found out about Constanso's from two retired SFPD friends. The first thing I noticed on my first visit is that there aren't any parking meters on that block. Its a true Family operation inside and the results are fantastic. The sandwiches are made with quality meats and you have your choice of a variety of rolls, white or wheat bread. The best part is the price $4.50 and .25 cents extra each for pickles, peppers and onions. Mayo, tomato and lettuce are included in the price. Win! Great sandwiches at a bargain basement price. No seating and parking can be a bitch. Not even sure if this place is licensed by the Health Department, but it's just sandwiches, so who cares? They load up a roll with lots of meat and veggies. I'm not a small guy but a sandwich from here is hard to finish. You can't go wrong with a premade, or a custom made - although the line for made-to-order can be a bit long. Bunch of characters running the place are always good for a laugh. Wow..... this place is legit! I was recommended here by a guy that works at a crane company here in SF located near Constanso's. This is a REAL deli with REAL big sandwiches like Grandpa used to make... HUGE. They open at 5 AM so I love stopping in here early for sandwiches before: work, a long road trip, fishing trip or picnic. The guys running the joint are sweet and adorable and of course Grandpa makes the sandwiches while his Son and Grandson heckle folks waiting in line which contributes to the whole experience.... fun, friendly, local and delicious!!
